All in all, it’s nice to see that even the Economist is paying attention to the stuff that Lovesystems is doing, and helping to bring awareness of the dating industry to the masses. Love and affection are the only human needs that capitalism hasn’t really figured out how to provide efficiently (and/or legally) – and Lovesystems is the leading company trying to address those needs. And despite the downturn, people are signing up for our seminars more than ever before.

Mostly, I think this is because people’s priorities change in a downturn. A recession forces a lot of people to think hard about what really makes them happy, what they really want. Big screen TV’s, fancy cars and fancy condos are out. Dinner parties, trips to the park and playing sports with your friends are in. People realize that strong relationships with people you care about come free, and make you happier than all the material goods you can accumulate. Love, dating and relationships suddenly become a priority, and Lovesystems are one of the few companies that can really help men with this.

The other reason is credibility. Pretty much every guy wishes he had better game. As they say, you can never be too rich, to healthy or too attractive, and we really do teach guys how to be more attractive. The main barrier most men have to signing up for out programs is simply believing that our system works – once they realize it works, they want to sign up for a program.

And I understand why. Going out in Atlanta, it seems like the majority of good looking women are hanging around with guys. Sometimes it’s a boyfriend, but more likely it’s not. If you want to pick up in the South, or in small towns or in college towns, mixed sets are going to be your bread and butter.
One of the best things about mixed sets is that the girls in these groups rarely get talked to all night because most guys in the bar are to scared to open them.  These are some of the best sets in the room if you know how to handle it.  Anyway, Braddock comes from some hicky Southern town, and that makes him pretty much an expert on this subject. In other news, this weekend was amazing. Atlanta girls are a bit uptight, (and they’re often in mixed sets) but they’re classy. Future picked up the only Asian girl I have ever seen in Buckhead. I spent as much time as I could this weekend with a beautiful sweet Emory grad student who speaks French with an adorable Southern accent. We changed the way our students think of sex, relationships, and possibility. We gorged on BBQ pork. I explained (and defended) the Canadian heathcare system a dozen times. Now I am exhausted and I return to Vancouver to rest. I will be back.

But the funniest one by far is one sent to us back when we were The Mystery Method. Some guy had tattooed a drawing of Mystery riding a tricycle on his forearm. He was wearing a magicians hat and big goggles, and was tooting a horn on the tricycle that had the words “Neg! Neg!” coming out of it.

I almost spat my coffee all over the wall when I saw it.

As someone who lived around the corner from Mystery and went out with him a lot in the period before Project Hollywood, and who later worked for him for about 2 years, I think I’m qualified to take a stab at this letter’s authenticity. You can see the full letter here, but I quote most of it below.

Several points of your article are in err.

Are in err? Is that a real word? If the sentence above is grammatically correct, it’s probably not Mystery. If the sentence above is smart-sounding pseudoenglish, then it just might be Mystery. +/- 0 points for Mystery authorship.

1. The mother is not, nor has she ever been, a stripper. She has been in Maxim UK tho. I continue to offer monthly seminars on picking up hired guns which include exotic dancers (and Maxim models).

The letter includes a plug for Mystery’s products in a private email. +1 for Mystery authorship.

2. My daughter is not yet 3, to speak of her getting sarged is in bad taste, hell it puts a shit taste in my mouth. Her continued privacy (safety) is my priority. Please refrain from playing with shit.

The last line here is a interesting reframe that is distinctive of Mystery. +1 for Mystery authorship.

6. Matador’s hair: yeah he’s had work done: he highly recommends the technology to those students who would benefit from it. Saying wig? Looks like someone wants his face punched in by a man bigger, stronger, and with more wealth than you.

So Matador has hair plugs? Awesome. Tooling Matador and in the same paragraph treating him like his personal attack dog: +1 Mystery authorship.

Successful risk taker: I may take risks with my career (notice the operative word: successful), but never with my daughter. She is safe and happy. Where did you come up with your conclusions?! Nail fungus? Deadbeat dad?

Hey! This is my material, not Mystery’s. I wrote in 2007 that being a Successful Risk Taker was an attraction switch. As far as I know, Mystery doesn’t teach that. -3 for Mystery authorship.

All this aside, pleasure to meet another person interested in the PUA. Mystery.

Atlanta is the only place I’ve ever been where you can walk into some trashy bar with saloon doors that offers $2 shooters and find women wearing evening dresses with their hair done up like they were getting ready for the prom. The guys (often friends) are just sitting there glassy eyed beside them, slamming back Jack and Cokes, and talking to themselves, while the pretty girls in the evening gowns are casting their eyes around the room hoping that someone can provide them with a little bit of conversation.

These are Southern Belles – an exotic and dying breed. But you can still find them in Atlanta – if you know the right places. Well dressed, well mannered, not too much makeup, they often drink two cocktails and leave at 1am. They’re classy, like most women used to be, before skanky music videos started twisting young women’s ideas of femininity.

Atlanta men can’t keep up. They’ve succumbed to the vulgarization of the American male. They’ve been brainwashed by beer commercials, frat-house movies and tv sitcoms. They’re not any worse than guys anywhere else in America, but they’re no better, and they’re not the equal of a beautiful southern girl. So the girls sit next to them, and chat amongst themselves, and wish a charming stranger would save them from the bores they’re stuck with.

Enter Tenmagnet….

It’s funny, but our most rabid critics are almost always self-righteous guys with absolutely no game. I’m not saying this to diss the Penny Arcade guys, who I’m sure a really cool guys, though they admittedly have no game, it’s simply a sociological observation.

Women, (for example Tyra Banks)  tend to understand and appreciate what we do – in fact, the most common response I get from women when I tell them my job is “are you hiring?” They know that women want to be picked up (competently), and that bad-boys don’t get more action because they’re manipulative, but because they actually have something that women want. They despair a the cluelessness of the modern western male and appreciate that we’re trying to do something about it.

But some guys, REALLY hate us. Perhaps it’s because our philosophy challenges their perception of reality – the perception of reality that has caused them to have so little game in the first place. Like an unemployable liberal-arts grad student embracing communism and deciding that anyone richer than himself must be a criminal, they cling desperately to an “morally superior” ideology that has brought them nothing, and benefited no one.

But I digress.

So, I was reading this thread when, about halfway down, I discover that one of our instructors, Future, is actually friends with the guys from Penny Arcade and wrote a retort to some of the more slanderous and misinformed comments that they made about the concept of being good with women.

This was kind of shocking to me, as I had a very robust model – completely imaginary – of the kind of person who would waste his time reading, let alone befriending the authors of, some ridiculous comic strip devoted to arcane references to weird video games that I have never even heard of, let alone played (Planescape: Torment?? WTF is that?). And that’s not who this guy is, this friend of mine. He is most certainly a solid guy, he is one of us.

Anyway, Future responds to their criticism with a really well-crafted retort. It’s a few hundred words long, but I think he sums it up nicely here.

More than anything our material is about understanding what makes women attracted to men beyond the obvious answers of looks and money and power, beyond the simple snipe of “confidence”. We then help our students implement that understanding through practical application, i.e. actually trying to pick up the girls you are attracted to.

Exactly.

There is an epidemic of bad posture amongst men in North America. And it’s not just skinny guys or completely out of shape guys who suffer from this epidemic. Gym goers, workaholics and techies suffer equally. And they all have the same problem with their posture – weak, rounded shoulders, a forward-jutting head, and belly that sticks out.

But you can improve your bad posture, and by doing so, you can make yourself a lot more attractive. You’ll be taller, look stronger, your clothes will fit better and you’ll look more confident, and you don’t have to go to the gym every day or drink a dozen protein shakes to do it.

The main culprit, the most common posture problem I see hanging out in clubs and with my own students, is Upper Cross Syndrome. Upper Cross is a posture imbalance that is usually caused by a sedentary lifestyle combined with lousy bodybuilding technique, and a lot of time spent in front of a computer. It happens when the upper back is weak and flexible, while the chest is stronger and less flexible. The chest muscles wind up pulling the shoulders and the head forwards, giving the sufferer bad posture, weak shoulders and causing the head to jut forward.

What upper cross syndrome does to your game:

Upper cross, like acne or a Nickleback T-shirt, can have a pretty bad effect on your game. The effect on your game is three fold – first, you lose a bit of height and broadness in your shoulders from the curvature of your back. Secondly, and this can be really killer, your natural posture is to always lean in, making you look like a weenie beta male who is showing too much interest. And finally, you look weak and out of shape, no matter how often you go to the gym, or how much you can bench press. Women don’t like muscles, they like strength, and you don’t look strong when you have bad posture.

Looking at the photo below, the guys on the left and right have pretty typical bad posture.

How to know if your posture is bad:

Looking at someone with good posture from the side (like the middle picture above), the mid-foot, hips, shoulder and ears will be in a straight line. When you have upper cross, your butt is usually tucked in, and your head juts out. Take a picture of yourself (with relaxed posture) from the side. Does it look like the middle guy in the photo above?

Here’s another test. Stand straight facing away from a wall. Step back with one foot until your heel touches the wall. Now step back with the other foot, and stand naturally. If you have correct posture, your heel, butt, shoulder blade and the back of your head should all be touching the wall. If there’s a big space between your butt and the wall, or between your head and the wall, you might have upper cross.
What causes Upper Cross:

Working in front of computers: This forces you to sit on your butt with your arms in front of you all day. Do this five days a week, and your pectoral muscles shorten, and your back muscles lengthen, causing your shoulders to naturally slouch forward. 

Crappy Workouts: When you go to the gym with the idea of getting big biceps, or a big chest, and you don’t take into consideration your health or athletic ability, muscle imbalances will often result.  Upper cross is usually caused by focusing on chest exercises while ignoring, or under-training the back and legs. How to Improve your posture:

1. You can’t slouch all day and then have good posture as soon as you leave work. Sit tall and hold your shoulders back when you’re at your desk. Get up and stretch your shoulders every hour or so to loosen up.  You may need to adjust your monitor, chair and keyboard.
   
2. Work out your back: Chin ups, pull ups, squats, deadlifts and rows are the key to correcting this problem. You should be doing AT LEAST one of these exercises for every bench press or chest exercise that you do.
3. Do Squats: A lot of people who sit on their butt all day have weak glutes, and overdeveloped quads. This can cause a tilt in the hips giving a poor base for the spine which can cause problems with the upper back , knees and your posture in general.  Learn how to squat properly, while activating your glutes, and you’ll start to straighten out your back from the bottom up.  Nothing fixes your posture better than learning to carry 200 lbs on your shoulders safely. Start with light weights though, till your posture improves. Make sure to follow the links above and read up on how to do squats properly before you try any heavy weights.
4. Find a balanced workout program: This point really sums up the last two points. Unless you really know what you’re doing (and you don’t if you have upper cross), don’t design your own workout program. Be wary of personal trainers, they’re usually up to date on the latest fads, but don’t necessarily know what they’re doing any more than that Financial Advisor who sold you GM stock in 2006.  Some good workout programs  I would recommend, ones which have stood the test of time and have been used by thousands of people, are Crossfit, Rippetoes and Stronglifts. I especially recommend Stronglifts because it starts with low weights and works up slowly while focusing on technique – these things are really important if you have bad posture, or are a newbie.
5. Stretch your pecs: You need to loosen and lengthen your pectoral muscles. There are a few stretches here. Warm up, but don’t stretch your back – it’s already too loose as it is.
6. Play sports: If being healthy and attractive to women is what you’re looking for in a workout, then athletic ability – not big muscles, should be the measure of your workout’s success.  If you’re faster, stronger and more agile on the playing field, you can be confident that your workout is producing results. Sports are just good for you.
