The last thing any of us want are friends and family hitting the road after your party and ending up in jail, hurt, or maybe worse. With that in mind here are a few ideas.

1. Last Call Time
If your paying someone like BarBop you can have the last call set in advance of the parties scheduled end time. If doing the bar yourself, take a mental note and do a last call at a scheduled time. Whenever you do this, take all alcohol away from your bar area, and hide it. Otherwise a last call is not going to work well.

2. The Key Bucket
If your planning to have a lively event then asks guests to place their car keys in a basket that you will hold on to for safe keeping. This gives you a chance to see them before they leave.

3. Don't overserve
Ya Ya it's a no brainer. However, just concious pouring can eliminate many problems. I have seen supposed veteran bartenders who can not judge the amount of liquor in drinks they have poured for years. If your unsure use a jigger or measuring device. Also, beware aware of the alcohol content of each liquor you use.

4. Have a plan
Ok so you take some steps and one of your pals still drinks too much. It happens, but what's next? Try to have a, just incase plan. Designate someone that is not drinking to take people home or be sure to clean off that old air mattress in the closet.

Hopefully, this will help you plan your holiday event a little safer. I have eaten the double cheeseburger with green pepper, onion, mayo, lettuce, and tomato, at the Five Guys Burgers, in powell, for the last 10 days. For some reason, I just can't get enough of those yummy things. I know for a fact, that I could'nt eat at a fast food joint that many days in a row. Their recipe for success seems to be quite simple. I read that they don't have a cooler and all ingredients are fresh. Wow, why did it take someone so long to come up with that idea.

Last weekend I took my 1 year old with me for my daily burger voyage. While he's not ready to chomp on their juicy works of art, I did allow him to munch a few peaces of french fry. It would seem that ketchup is one of his most enjoyable experiences to date. Well I don't think his expression topped his first taste of a lemon, but he was obviously enthused by ketchup.

At any rate, if you have not had the chance to visit a five guys burger joint, I would recommend you do. They get an A+ from this bartender.

Perfecting the art of Sweet Tea

Today's blog will switch focus from alcoholic beverages to tea. Tea is one of my favorite beverages, which is practically the only thing I drink these days. After drinking tea from morning till dawn for the last five years, I now dub myself as a tea expert with the ability to draw upon my vast knowledge of previous tea tastings. Therefore, I feel qualified to criticize the most popular tea outlets and offer you the reader my tips on how to make the perfect sweet tea recipes.

Mcdonalds often advertises their sweet tea as this delicious liquid that will bring joy to the mouth. One great thing about mcdonalds might be the uniform recipes used at virtually every location. For example, a big mac in Cali should taste similar to the ones in Florida. Their tea recipe is less than spectacular. Someone with a lack of tea knowledge might disagree, but after repeated tasting you will begin to realize that McDonalds tea is more like sugary water. Burger King, Hardees, and Wendys all score even lower. The next time you taste one you may start to realize the truth that has been hid from your eyes by walls of sugar.

Catering outlets make tea in large batches for events like weddings and such. Some caterers get it correct, by I feel that this shear accident at times. Some use too little tea, too much sugar, and over steep.

On the positive side, I have found a few good spots with tasty tea. McAllisters Deli in powell seems to produce a good tea. Chik-Fil-A is in the middle as well with decent tea. I am going to guess they use a little less sugar or slightly more tea. I don't know for sure what the differen is, but maybe it's even the brand.

To figure out exactly what I could do to better make tea for events I have made around 20 different pitchers of tea over the last few weeks and began to sample the differences. Without getting into heavy details, it is obvious to me that making stronger tea is the most simple way to make better tea. One of my favorites used so far is Luzianne. They recommend one family bag per 32 oz. However, I used 3 family bags for 64 oz and it really makes a difference. Also, I have experimented with the sugar used and eventually found a new splenda product that I like. Splenda now makes a bag mixed with real sugar and their product. I used 1/3 cup per 64 oz. of tea. In short, I now believe that the secret to making great tea is using a the right amount of sugar (usually less than most recipes) and more of the tea (usually more than most recipes). Also, I did find that steeping is important. Generally, I found the amount of time to steep was exactly as described on the directions.

This recipe and a yummy flavored one I liked were as follows;

Perfect Sweet Tea
3 family bags Luzianne Tea per 64 oz. water
1/3 cup splenda sugar blend

Flavored Sweet Tea
2 family bags Luzianne Tea per 64 oz. water
2 bags of celestial tea seasonings
1/3 cup real sugar

Gift Ideas for Bride and Groom from a male perspective

While bartending is my area of wedding expertise there are numerous others facets that any event professional becomes familiar with like wedding gifts. Being a male I'm sure my wants are slightly different from the typical bride's, but I will attempt to be as unbiased as possible by not discussing x box 360's and the latest flat screen plasma. This blog will simply list some of the neat ideas I have seen.

First, I have to give credit to those couples who bring in a super nice bottle of wine. Occasionally, I see the $50 plus bottles of wine gifts. I have a few recommendations if you do this. Don't ask the bartender to put this bottle on ice and serve it for their toast. This seems like an excellent idea at the start, but most couples have already had a few by this time and will not have the time or concentration to enjoy your hard earned dollars. They may never even know it was your gift. If your spending big money on wine, champaigne, or liquor then wrap it, so the couple can enjoy and appreciate it at a later date.

Second, would be the typical ideas like luxury bedding and bedding sets. You'll see a lot of people buying these for new couples and it's something they probably need. However, if your going to do it, why not do it with style. Spacify.com is a great site that offers some cool modern furniture, bedding, and dining designs.

Third, I am going to have to say money. Who can't use more of that? Money can be used for virtually anything these days, imagine that. The only thing money can't buy is love, and they already have that, so why not give them a little? Many weddings even have the "tip the bride dance" where everyone is allowed to stuff a dollar bill in her veil. Those are always a blast.

Well not lot to it in my opinion. While researching this topic I saw articles on buying items like jewelry and other items, but I felt that most of those items only appealed to the bride. Personally, I dont want one of these contraptions called a vacuum. I don't even know what they do! Also, what would I do with an expensive glass vase. Sure they look beautiful and cost a ton of money, but I would rather have the ton of money.

Bartending jobs at risk!

Well it's the end of an era. The days of getting served by your favorite bartender may soon pass. I stumbled upon robo-bartender tonight online. This robot can serve 24/7 for only 30 cents a day as reported by the website. If that's the case then Im toast. Anyways, as a huge sci-fi fan, I thought some of you would get a kick out of this.

I have already thought out some good ideas they can incorporate in their next model. Patrons should be able to blow into his finger for a BAC reading and insert a quarter in it's chest for popular hangover cures like aspirin.

Fun New Years Toasts

Here is a collection of fun New Years toast I have compiled.

-Stir the eggnog, lift the toddy, Happy New Year, everybody. ~ Phyllis McGinley

-Then sing, young hearts that are full of cheer,With never a thought of sorrow; The old goes out, but the glad young yearComes merrily in tomorrow. -Emily Miller

-Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right.” -Oprah Winfrey

-The proper behavior all through the holiday season is to be drunk. This is the green lighted mini-bar in the left photo.

The purple bar on the right is actually a semi-circular bar that is about 7' in length. This piece offers full bar capabilities. Use these in tandom with one another, or mix and match, as in the photo above. They offer certified and insured bartenders for any event and can bring along a huge selection of party rentals like glassware, tables, linens, keg chillers, frozen drink machines and more. However, the aim of this blog is to explain why were called BarBop.

BarBop was the result of 2 dictionary explanations resulting in our new term. We define BarBop as "One who brings the bar to you".

If you look up the word Bop, it's defined as slang for, move the party on down the road. So our idea was to move our bars on down the road. Thus you have the word BarBop. To view our fancy flash logo visit our home page.

Each BarBop bartender is specifically trained to set-up and serve using mobile bar equipment.

Be the bar star!

Bartending is not for the bashful. In the past, I have seen many employees come and go. There is an obvious trend with succesful bartenders and even party hosts. They have great personalities. Personality allows marginal bartenders to out perform many with superior bar knowledge, and sky's the limit for experienced ones who utilize them.

Many personality defecits seem to be a lack of communication. Bartenders are often the center of a good conversation and should be prepared to communicate. By learning their trade and remembering a few key points anyone can be a good entertainer.

Here is a list of things I do to prepare myself for some events. Some of these items are now a routine for me.

Every time you have an event learn a few good clean jokes. Google em or subscribe to an online joke a day blog.

If serving wine, read the label, so you can describe it with confidence. Also, increase your knowledge with some tips like these.

Read the news. World news or sports are great items to discuss when all else fails. I usually glance at AOL's front page.

Learn how to pour beer correctly.

Impress people with your bar trivia knowledge.

Hopefully, these ideas will help spark your imagination. The next time you need a topic you'll be prepared and ready to entertain by remember some of these tips. Always be ready to switch it up! I am currently working on my acting imitations for example, but only time will tell if it's a success.

Goodluck and be sure to visit BarBop the next time you need great bar service at your event.

BarBop's Famous Wedding Punch

Both kids and adults love our wedding punch. A very simple upgrade to any of our wedding bar packages or semi-easy for someone to make. Here is our super secret, never before shared recipe for wedding punch.

(1) 1 liter Ocean Spray cranberry juice
(1) large can of pineapple juice
(1) 5 oz. of banana flavoring
(2) teaspoon black walnut flavoring
(1) cup of sugar

Mix it all in a gold encrusted diamond etched mixing pot. Or a large regular pot will do if no gold encrusted diamond etched pots are available. Mix well! If transporting this in a container to your event mix once more before pouring into punch bowl. Very Important!

Your last step is to add:

(1) 2 liter of gingerale

This completes your punch. This will serve about 66 people. Make this a champagne punch by leaving out the gingerale and using champagne.

Do not pre-mix your gingerale or champagne. Wait until your are ready to serve or it will be flat. Be sure your punch is very cold just before pouring.

Perfect Egg Nog Cocktail

It's that time of the year. Egg nog time! Sometimes the best cocktails are the simple ones. Here is BarBop's idea of the perfect eggnog cocktail.

1/2 oz. Jim Beam (bourbon)
3/4 oz. Courvoisier (cognac)
5 oz. Egg Nog

Fill a rocks glass 3/4 full with ice (this is one occasion we dont fill to the top). Pour in your alcohol and top with egg nog. Garnish with a lite dusting of cinnamon. Peach Vodka
2 oz. X-Rated
.5 oz. Triple Sec

1. Chill martini glass with ice.
2. Family, friends, and fun come to mind when thinking of my personal life. However, my job of running Tennessee Bartenders allows me to see a different side of the holiday party spectrum. What a very busy time of year for us bartenders!

We are servicing bartenders for an average of 5 parties per day this December, on the weekends. When doing something in repetition you begin to notice similarities and differences, and now (drum roll please) I will offer my opinionated advice for planning a successful holiday party. There are three things you should do and one thing you should not do for every successful holiday party.

You should provide festive decorations. This year I've attended parties well decorated and those that were not. Decorations seem to play a key roll in getting the cheer factor up. Maybe it's just coincidence, but I am going to vote for cheery festive decor at any holiday party. It's easy! You can even buy the stuff you need online.

You should have something special to drink. Ya Ya, so says the bartending service, but wait, this dose not have to be alcoholic. You can provide non-alcoholic Christmas punch or a custom made Christmas cocktail. Just take the time to make it yourself! Don't buy something from you local grocery store. Making a special drink for your guests will provide great conversation and that extra personal touch to the party. Don't know any recipes? Get a free one at www.TennesseeBartenders.com.

You should have hors d' oeuvres or snacks and not a full meal. That is correct! Go the cheap route I say. In my opinion, you should provide either lite or heavy hors d' oeuvres depending on what you wish to spend, and not a full course buffet. Holiday parties don't get going till after a couple hours and when a full meal is served, most guests seem to get sleepy or go home when the meal is over. Serving snacks and interesting treats throughout the night will keep your guests motivated, engaged, and awake. Also, if your serving sweets, wait till later in the evening to let guests see them. If you have servers, instruct them to pass them later in the evening, and not 10 minutes after guests arrive.

You should not self cater. Hire us! Seriously, I have attended 2 parties this year where the host's provided the service. The parties were great, but the host's were nowhere to be seen. At the end of the parties I thanked my friends, but noticed that they were pretty much not included in the fun, as they were working all night. But everyone can't afford service you say? Fear not! Tennessee Bartenders can put together a smashing party starting from $299. All you have to do is provide the spirits.

Christmas CocoaNog Cocktail Recipe

This is a quick study but was a pretty big hit at one of our holiday parties the other night. "The Christmas CocoaNog" is made with 1 oz of Crown Royal whiskey topped with equal parts kahlua mix and egg nog. Please note this is not kahlua liqueur, but is the mudslide mix found in any grocery store. To make the drink look more festive, we rimmed each glass with red and white peppermint flavored sugar, and garnished them with green chocolate cherries, custom made by Tennessee Bartenders. If you wish to duplicate the cherry garnish, you will need to buy swords or some type of pick to keep the cherries out of the drink, because the alcohol will break down the chocolate. While not cheap, at a price tag of about $400 each, they work great! As a professional bartending service we strive to create drinks that look and taste great. Jimmy Buffet's machine allows us to both.

The concoction maker is a great tool and can be adapted to work well for high volume needs. In the photo above you can see a beatiful frozen strawberry dairuirie made in the eye of the storm. Although we were in the weeds, we were able to maintain high quality drink service with the blender. We actually own two of their larger models and love them both. For high volume service it is definitely necessary to have atleast two of the mixing pitchers available.

Commonly, we serve a selection of standard frozen drinks like margaritas, daiquiries, and pina coladas when using the blender. It's always easy to use real fruits, as opposed to pre-mixes, when using the maker. At Tennessee Bartenders we offer blender packages with the Jimmy Buffet Concoction Maker that come complete with fresh mixing fruits, custom garnish flags, colored salts, and more, for any event.

Tennessee Volunteer Cocktail Recipe!

.5 oz vodka
.5 oz gin
.5 oz lt. tequila
1.5 oz OJ
1.5 oz Pineapple
Splash of Mountain Dew
Garnish with a "Big Orange" wedge

This drink is one of my most favorite creations. I call it the Tennessee Volunteer. The drink recipe tastes great and represents those vol colors well! First pour all liquors over ice in your shaker along with the OJ and pineapple juice. Shake the ingredients well then pour in a tall glass on the rocks. Top the concoction with a splash of mountain dew or sprite and garnish with a nice orange wedge. A great drink for any volunteer tailgating fan to whip up! The site is large enough to host two receptions at the same time, has it's own chapel, and features a large pavilion for outdoor events. Tennessee Bartenders has provided numerous bars here, and we can provide a bar that fits your imagination. Typically, bars are positioned outside on the rear deck or the pavilion, but can be located anywhere. If you're looking for a beatiful secluded location for your wedding guests to stay you should check this place out.

Use the Knoxville Museum of Art for your party!

The Knoxville Museum of Art (KMA) is a great place for any event. My company Tennessee Bartenders has bartended many functions here and some of those events can be viewed on our photos page. The photo above was a very simple bar we did for East Tennessee Community Services, a non-profitt orginazation in TN. This small function was held indoors but guests can also mingle outdoors. In the past, we have done some very large events here! The museum is one of my favorite venues for large scale weddings. The KMA offers a central hall that is ideal for bands, eye pleasing art, clean facilities, and the ability to move in and outdoors quickly. While any plain room will do for smaller parties, having this type of set-up is great for those 300+ person events. If you need bartending services at the KMA please contact us.

New Blog Site Exclusive For Bartenders

Fellow Bartenders,

There is a new site that is listing 100% bar related blogs. Kegs are often considered when hosting parties of 80 or more people. At the end, unused bottles can be taken home, while left over keg juice is wasted.
How many bartenders do I need for my party?
The industry average is about 1 bartender per 75 guests, for beer and wine only events, and 1 per 50 at a full liquor bar event. Many good tenders can push this number to 1 per 125 (beer/wine only) or 1 per 75 (full bar), but at wedding receptions, most brides agree that it's better to be overstaffed with no waiting time for drinks.
How much alcohol will I need for our event?
Figure about 2-3 drinks per person in most situations. For more info see my custom designed formula for figuring these amounts, also on our blogs page.
Do I need liqueurs in the bar selection?
If you are serving a full liquor bar then you should buy a bottle of Triple Sec at the bare minimum. If you wish to offer a certain type of cocktail at your reception, then check out the recipes to ensure you have the alcoholic ingredients required, as many popular cocktails use them.
What about the toast?
The most common mistake is for a couple to not get schedules to the bartenders. Pouring and passing out the toast glasses will usually take the tenders about 5 minutes, and having to wait 5 minutes can really choke up a good speech. Make sure the bartenders have the schedule and this way they can coordinate a secret hand signal or send morris code to the DJ (you get the idea).
What about tip jars?
First let me say, I have no opinion on this, I am just offering the facts. In my experience about 70% of weddings request no tip jars and in this case the tip can be handled through the host. The other 30% could care less. I have never noticed a guest having a problem with a tip jar and a decent number of guests will tip even when told there is no tip jar and its covered. However, many hosts are absolutely against this. Personally, I can give great arguements for both sides and you should make the decision you are comfortable with. Most wedding planners will advise against tip jars. If you are unsure of what to do here just handle it yourself.
What liquors do I need?
The standard bar will have vodka, tequila, rum, gin, and whiskey. However, I will attempt to rate the liquors I think are most important and popular by experience. If you wish to offer a smaller than above, start at the top of the list and go down according to your budget limits.
1. Whiskeys (Crown or Jack will go very fast in most circumstances)
2. Vodka (Rarely asked for by name, so buy a lot of one brand and your good)
3. Gin (Martinis are always asked for by someone, but not in huge numbers)
4. Rum (Great for the person who always asks, what can you make me?)
5. Tequila (Maragaritas are hit or miss, meaning youll go through a ton or none at all)
6. Scotch (Typically, not so popular, but if you have a family member who likes it you may want to buy a bottle)

This concludes our blog, but if you have a question you dont see here just shoot me an email at sales@tennesseebartenders.com. We'll even help you if your not using our services. This recipe question just seemed to float to the top of my head this morning. How do you make a Thanksgiving cocktail? Here is the methodology of how I arrived to this combination of mixology selectionizations.

First, I tried to remember the most popular liquor for Thanksgiving, and ofcourse, I came up with Wild Turkey.

Second, I asked myself, self, other than being named after a turkey what does wild turkey have to do with thanksgiving? Eureka, it was corn! Wild turkey is a bourbon so that means it has atleast 51% corn mash, so we'll call this part of the recipe Corn.

Third, I thought what goes with corn on Thanksgiving and its usually potatoes, turkey, and that wierd cranberry junk, so my next step was to add the potatoes in the form of potatoe vodka, so we shall add some Chopin vodka to the mix and call it this part of the recipe Potatoes.

Fourth, we shall add some cranberry juice and call this part of the recipe Canberry Junk.

Fifth, I couldnt think of nada that's distilled with turkey so will garnish this bad boy with a sliver of turkey and this shall make up our final ingredient to the drink, Turkey!

Anyways, I am going to make one of these later this evening and give it a taste with my leftovers. I'll post a picture of the concoction above this post. Be sure to let me know how derranged you guys think this one is! Get more freaky cocktail recipes at http://www.tennesseebartenders.com

What a blast guys! Here is the photo taken of me just after making the cocktail. It was great! You may want to leave out the garnish though. Happy Thanksgiving Day everyone!
