Several days ago I mentioned a good friend our ours - Dolly Jerome. Dolly is pretty nifty with her weaving techniques and as promised I thought I would show you her Catfish - it hangs up here in the shop and is a constant source of entertainment for the kids when their mum's are occupied printing their photos.

Mullumbimby Textile & Fibre Artist Pat Skene has recently introduced me to the art of fabric manipulation - there is a jacket in the making - but time is what I need to get it finished - which I might add is a very precious commodity around here - stay tuned on that subject - the jacket that is not time! Machine Embroidery, Patchwork & Quilting, Felting, Beading, Hand Embroidery and Fabric Painting just to name a few 'things' that she does!!! TenterGrafiX has has heard quite a few 'oohs' and 'corrs' coming from the Gallery end of the shop where we have some of her work on display.

For a few months now we have had the pleasure of displaying fibre work by local artist Dolly Jerome. Dolly, an avid collector of all 'things' nature collects local grasses found along the banks of Tenterfield Creek and its tributaries. Either in a class situation or just kicking back at home she sets about making traditional fibre containers. The fibres used range from Palm fronds, Lamandra, Raffia, Gumnuts and Bullrush. Remind me to show you her Catfish .......

Variety Concert

Tenterfield had the privilege of enjoying a variety concert last night par excellence!
With locals still picking up the pieces from the January floods it was second nature for Berryl Dean & Chris Markham to put their heads together and put up a plan for an evening of entertainment.
The Rotary Club of Tenterfield, an ever-ready band of troopers, got themselves involved, as did many other unsung heroes behind the scenes. The upshot, a very enjoyable evening of entertainment.

Chris Markham, Barry Patterson, Lorraine Rhodes-Roberts and Jan Ross were accompanied by the very capable Grant Ovenden on Grand Piano, to give us songs like ‘Ordinary Miracles’, ‘Don’t put your daughter on the stage Mrs Worthington’, ‘Will you still love me tomorrow’ and ‘I dreamed a dream’. Local Acapella group Pitching Tents gave us four traditional songs in the round, while up and coming local, Sara Eriksson complete with her guitar, sang two beautiful songs that she had written.
Local favourite Cameron Bolton complete with trusty guitar (highly decorated with stickers gathered from a recent overseas trip) belted out cover versions of Diesel and Paul Kelly – go Cameron!
If you thought the evening was purely song – you couldn’t have been more mistaken – John McMahon and Erica Cossins put on their dancing shoes and brought us Cha Cha, Rumba and Rock’n’Roll whilst Stacey Hayne offered a beautiful ballet display followed in the second half by a contemporary piece.
Local Bush Poet Tony Kelly brought the house down with his stories especially when most of the audience had a fair idea (or thought they did) on who he was talking about!
Peter & Michael 2/3 of Welders Dog http://www.weldersdog.com/ (David had to work) sang their self penned songs ‘Troubadour’ and ‘Eureka’ accompanied by mandola and lagerphone. Now there’s a group to watch out for. Georgie Chorley drove all the way from Armidale to join her friends on stage singing a haunting ‘I think it’s going to rain today’ and the more up tempo ‘The wind cries Mary’ whilst accompanying herself on the Grand Piano.
Finally, back on old stomping ground (namely the School of Arts stage where he first performed at age 4) …. Gary Shearston! http://www.garyshearston.com/. Along with his son Luke, who plays drums on his fathers latest CD ‘Renegade’ Gary gave us ‘Dingo’ and ‘Tenterfield’.
For those that missed out – don’t worry there are tickets still available for the Matinee performance this Saturday afternoon. But hurry – they won’t last once the word is out!!!
Just for good measure a huge group of business houses have put up a bucket load of goodies all of which will be auctioned off on the Saturday evening at The Tavern.
Money raised from these events will go to Flood Relief in the local Tenterfield Shire district.

TENTERFIELD FLOOD APPEALS

So you thought it was all over ... not so!

Still a lot of clearing up to do with no end in sight for some. Tenterfield however, is a tough little back block - if there is a way of doing something we will find it!

In January a group of 'Old Fellas' - I mean nice blokes ... got together in The Royal Hotel and had a fundraiser - brilliant time - good music and excellent company - raised a little bit of money to go in the kitty.

Well stay tuned .... there's another event tonight in the Tenterfield School of Arts ... Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Tenterfield - A Variety Concert - tell you all about it tomorrow!

TENTERFIELD SHOW - 2011

TenterGrafiX has been involved with the Photography section of the Tenterfield Show for the last 6 years. Each and every one of those years has seen a gradual clime in entries. It doesn’t seem to matter if you have a throw-away or a camera with all the bells and whistles - the standard of the photographs has become and remains extremely high. Not bad for a small country town!!

Despite the cancellation of the Stud Cattle, Shearing, Utes and Motorbike events – because of something called A FLOOD .... The Show will go on!

According to the President the show this year will be no different. Two bars, entertainment featuring a range of local acts and showcasing the talent our area has. However, a few programme changes have been made:

* The six-bar jump, to be held late Friday afternoon in front of the Grandstand with big prize money, should be exciting both for jumping enthusiasts and everyone else in the crowd.
* The Tenterfield Fire Brigade demonstrations should also provide a lot of excitement and interest.
* The Prime Cattle Auction is back with The President’s Trophy Young Auctioneers Competition. This will be held Friday 5.30pm at the cattle yards on the Western side of the Showground.
* Dressage has been moved to Saturday at the Miles Street Arena, allowing horse exhibitors to have a go at the event.
* Motor bikes will be held on the Sunday at the Pelham Street bike track, with a BBQ and raffle.
* The new alpaca animal and product expo should interest many show-goers.

All the usual Show attractions are back - dog trials, show hacks, Rodeo on Friday and Saturday nights, plus fireworks Friday, demolition derby Saturday and Campdraft Sunday – all adding to an action packed show for the whole family.

The 134th Show will be on 4, 5 and 6 February at the Tenterfield Showgrounds, Tenterfield.

2011 TENTERFIELD FLOODS - The Aftermath

Tenterfield became isolated on Tuesday 10.1.2011 and with further rainfall expected the same night things were not looking good for the town or the Shire.

The New England and Bruxner Highways; Douglas, Scott, Manners, High and Naas Streets; Rouse St North; Mt Lindsay, Washpool Creek, Geyers, Old Ballendean, Sunnyside Loop, Sunnyside Platform, Mt McKenzie, Gunyah, Pyes Creek, Plains Station & Hootens Roads and Harrigans Lane were all closed!

Molesworth Street became the Highway - it being the only access available to get from one side of town to the other ... that was until a fire truck became stuck in a rather large hole on the bridge!

Several houses in town were evacuated as were a number of rural properties.

With heavy rains having fallen in late 2010 and again, earlier this month, the Tenterfield Shire (all 728,890 hectares of it) had been declared a natural disaster area.

Well there's no arguing that point now. (we live a the southern end of town and between 4 and 11th January we had 388mm).

Stories keep coming in: farm machinery moved to higher ground whilst flood water creep in behind you. A race back down the hill to retrieve important papers from the house. Historical effects collected by family members over the centuries gone or just out in the paddock covered in silt. Hay salvaged from sheds. Extensive damage to Vineyards. Commercial crops under water - some salvaged, others not - roads washed away so precious crops couldn't be taken to market anyway.

As the waters kept rising we kept watching for major damage - the folk on the west side could not believe what was happening - Bluff, Deepwater, Mole and Duraresq Rivers all joining forces - 5m or more - rising well above the 1976 records.

No power (poles dragged into the river and taken away who knows where), no landlines or mobile phones - so no means of communication with the outside world. Bruxner Highway at Mingoola gone. Power lines and fencing looking like spaghetti lying over the paddock and roads - Bitumen tossed by the wayside complete with their double white lines for company.

Now, some 21 days later, residents are still walking around shaking their heads. We hear of food, water and fuel supplies still being airlifted to Wangrah Wilderness Lodge down the Bluff River and to other isolated properties around Mingoola where a 2klm stretch of trees were ripped out by a wall of water.

We might have bright blue skies, hot sunny days and all looks passable.

Well take a closer look - rubbish still hangs off fences, scattered sheds - flattened, lying in places far from their origins. Smiling faces hide the weariness and unknown costs. Roads, bridges - damaged beyond belief - not enough resources to get it fixed straight away. The landscape - changed with a click of your finger. It will be many, many years before this area heals completely from the wounds inflicted by nature.

This blog entry is the hardest I have had to do. Even today I don't have the figures to hand ... I am typing this up at the end of January - two weeks after these pictures were taken. Everybody is well aware that Toowoomba, Gatton, Murphys Creek and Brisbane have also been hit. This is what makes it so hard to put pen to paper. At the time these were taken Brisbane hadn't happened ... so we folk here in the township of Tenterfield were shocked at the enormity of what our 'Creek' had just become.

I have many more photos but I have to get my head around what hit Tenterfield - in fact what hit the Shire and how our residents are going to cope. It is only now that the stories are starting to filter through. Tenterfield Shire, like all small shires could barely make ends meet and now ... there are roads, bridges, kerbing, parks, trees, fencing - the list goes on.

If I can gather more stories and sort through the photos I will make another entry very soon.

To all Australians far and wide who have some how been affected by the recent flooding in their area - we are thinking of you.

Toy Runs

Approx 70 bikes took part in the 2010 Tenterfield Toy Run. Gifts of toys and non-perishable items were donated by the generous residents of Tenterfield, Wallangarra, Jennings, Ballendean, Stanthorpe and all the little communities in between.

A Sausage Sizzle, run by the Tenterfield Lions was enthusiastically devoured on our return to base.

The weekend before Christmas we got back on the bikes and joined our fellow riders in Toowoomba for their annual Toy Run. From the moment we arrived at the motel it rained! Not hard, not cold - just annoying. As is the norm, groups take off for trips to Crows Nest, Oakey, Gatton and Nobby. This year we decided to go west to Crows Nest. A VERY WET CROWS NEST as it turned out. We usually manager to pick up other riders on the way - not this time ... not a soul.

In previous years Toowoomba can see gatherings of 200 to 300 bikes - we got 32! I can't say I blame them. Very wet and very miserable. I wore bin liners under the riding gear and still came home soggy.

We fell off the radar a bit - sorry about that!

It seems as though we never stop. Work keeps us very busy - though never busy enough to employ another person - isn't that a common tale for small businesses!

There have been many social activities on the Tenterfield Cal - all sorts of good things to do an see. How I wish we could attend everything.

The Tenterfield Hospital Ball had a good turn out. Entertainment was provided by Ripple FX and an effervescent Elvis!

NSW Rural Fire Service had the State Championships in Dubbo - huge amount of people. Interesting exercises and a LOT of cooking. Catering, as usual ran like clockwork! Took lots of photos ..... do you think I can find them ... Mmmmm!

In September a new Gallery opened in Stanthorpe Qld. NEST GALLERY has many local and Australian artists showcasing their work. Emma has the winning recipe for a wonderful fresh arena. Why not visit http://www.nestgallery.com.au/ and see for yourself.

We had a visit from St Joseph's Primary School - a group of lovely children came to watch how their school project was completed. All artwork and typing had been done by the class and it was up to us to bind it altogether. Which we did with their help. A very well presented 'Thank you' was given and in the following days a school pendant arrived for us to display in the shop. A lovely idea.

Relay For Life came to visit the town again - at least it wasn't as cold as last time. We had a fair amount of work on so was not able to get that involved. However Ruth put her hand up to help the Tenterfield Lions Club cook breakfast - good fun - enjoyed by all.

Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital

The following might not be a subject that you want to take on board - and I apologise to anyone with a delicate soul BUT .... I would recommend that you have a look at the website http://www.hamlinfistula.org.au/index.html and have a read. It is incredible that in this day and age there are still women in this world who to go through such an ordeal just to have a baby. I personally wish I could do much more than collecting knitting wool, knitting squares and/or making quilts. But then I guess the girls have so little to start off with that my knitting squares for a blanket for them is a pretty big deal in their mind!

Hamlin Fistula® Australia Limited is the authorised Australian representative of the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in Ethiopia. It administers the Hamlin Fistula® Relief and Aid Fund which is a registered Australian charity with tax deductible status. It is the only charity in Australia solely dedicated to supporting the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital.

The hospital was founded by Dr Catherine Hamlin AC and her late husband, Dr Reg Hamlin OBE. It is dedicated to the treatment and care of women who suffer horrendous childbirth injuries caused by prolonged obstructed labour without any medical help or pain relief. If she survives this ordeal she will give birth to a still born child and her internal injuries will cause her to be incontinent of urine and sometimes bowel contents as well. She will spend the rest of her life a destitute outcast unless she can get to the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital or one of its outreach centres.

Some interesting facts:
In developing countries where there is little or no medical assistance during childbirth, women in obstructed labour either die or end up with terrible birthing injuries such as fistula. As well as causing incontinence, their injuries often result in other complications such as partial or complete paralysis of the legs. In Ethiopia where the roads are few, the terrain is rugged, and medical help is not readily available, a mother with a small or malformed pelvis or a badly positioned child may be in labour for five or more days without help. Many of these women become deeply depressed. Due to the objectionable smell associated with the condition these women are mostly rejected by their husbands and families. They become social outcasts and have a deep sense of rejection and shame. It is estimated that there are 2,000,000 – 3,000,000 women in developing countries living with fistulas (WHO). It is estimated that there are around 9,000 new cases per year in Ethiopia – mostly in rural areas. Obstetric fistula is a treatable and preventable condition. Fistula surgery at the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital has a 93% cure rate. The Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital has treated over 35,000 women. Most of the women treated at the Fistula Hospital are able to return to a normal life with their dignity restored. Many are able to have a child and experience the happy role of motherhood.

Wintersong 2010

Celebrations are up and running this week for WinterSong 2010. Our celebrated songman PETER ALLEN was born here in 1944. On the 18th of this month it was the 18th Anniversary of his untimely death. To honour his career WinterSong have been putting on a variety of activities & sights from musical street themes, art exhibitions, buskers, The WinterSong Ball, Car & Bike Show, fantastic light & fountain display at the pool and even a lonely piano parked outside Sherelles in case anyone wanted to tinkle the ivory's!

Rotary hosted Performance Workshops in May this year to foster emerging local talent. They were on the lookout for aspiring young entertainers from around the region.

Under the professional guidance of Barry Patterson and ably assisted by Grant Ovenden on piano, 16 performers tuned up their voices, flexed their guitar playing fingers, took deep breathes and were off and running.

What else can you say other than CONGRATULATIONS all round to the graduates of the performance workshop - a full house at the Tenterfield School of Arts last night and plenty of audience participation. You should all be very proud of yourselves.

Well, what can I say we closed for a week to try and catch up with all the HUGE jobs that were beginning to pile up - almost cleared the deck but not quite! Whilst closed we did some necessary housekeeping on the building before moving our HP large format printer and scanner to the back of the shop and into the gallery. At the moment I am in the process of purchasing art supplies as an addition to our portfolio there has been enough interest to make me think this a worth while exercise.

At the end of the week we took ourselves away for a relaxing stay at 'Poppys Cottage' in Armidale - country hospitality at its best - despite the weather we still managed to have one of our breakfasts outside surrounded by the friendly animals who kept us entertained inbetween the courses. Looking through the photos today I realised that I had not taken any of the front of the cottage so have used the image drawn by James Write© of 'Poppys Cottage'. Operation Saddler

The 21st & 22nd of this month saw a whirlwind of activity not normally seen in a small country town like Tenterfield. Hosting the first of a series of regional NSW counter terrorism exercises, Tenterfield found itself right in the thick of it.

With more that 100 staff and resources gleamed from the NSW Police, Fire, Ambulance, RFS, SES and Health plus onlookers from some of the Queensland emergency services it proved to be one of the most interesting exercises I have ever been involved in.

As usual I was stuck in the kitchen .... but you will see from the gallery http://www.tentergrafix.com.au/events.html I did escape a couple of times!

Catering requirements became a challenge as the hours went by - Friday was a mild day weather-wise until lunch time when the heavens opened - thank goodness for a 4-bay shed. Covers for the day were about 80 - though it did start at 40! Morning Tea and lunch was out in the field on Saturday complete with sunshine. We fed approx 130. Lots of empty plates and folk coming back for seconds!

Tracy Grimshaw and the 'A Current Affair' team were embedded within the exercise for the two days and with any luck within the next week or so their program will go to air.

When Time Flys ......

OMG - What happened to April? It would appear as though I have missed a few days!

Training and assessment went well (I think) - I guess everything will be confirmed when the uniform, badge and official paperwork arrives.

Tenterfield has enjoyed its weather, the temperatures have remained quite mild throughout the day and there is still plenty of sunshine to be had. The nights however have been creeping in and the familiar smell of cozy wood fires has started to permeate the evening air. Our pretty trees are fast loosing their leaves but not before their wardrobes are depleted of colours.

Three locals who appeared in a Murder-Mystery called 'Unearthed', recently had the red carpet treatment at the School of Arts where the film, partially made here in Tenterfield, had its premier. Monique Spencer, Terry Powell & Geoff Newman were all very impressed with the end result.

Talking about films - if you haven't already seen 'Charlie & Boots' - do. It's just 'Oh-so-Ozi' and of course you get to see a little bit of TenterGrafiX as Father and Son drive into Tenterfield for THAT thick shake!

Another new movie 'Beneath Hill 60' could be a good one to see - it is based on an unpublished autobiography written by Oliver Holmes Woodward who was born in Tenterfield. Woodward trained in the local mines - this training inevitably assisted in the destruction of Hill 60.

Congratulations to Lu Potter and Linda Nye for scoring equal points in the 'Peoples Choice' award in Tenterfield's recent 'Brush with Verse'.

After three months of full-time exhibitions held throughout the Borderline region the Borderline 2010 Art Trail came to a close on the holiday weekend just as Art In The Mill celebrated its 10th birthday at the Ballandean Timber and Case Making Mill.

Before we close the story for this year on the Art Trail a huge congratulations must surely go to Tenterfield Local Aboriginal Lands Councils involvement - an extraordinary exhibition - very inspiring - TenterGrafiX congratulates Ronella Jerome and all involved for an exciting and vibrant first effort and PLEASE keep the Moombahlene Artist Gallery going - it's a side of Tenterfield that people need to see! Well done.

Birds in the Bush ...

Totally exhausted from the training and catering at RFS HQ (Tenterfield) we almost forgot that there was a drinks and nibbles affair at the Tenterfield Bookcase for Birds in the Bush duo Shirley Caldwell & Nola Sindel. Both ladies having had a successful exhibition of Botanic & Wildlife Art since February.
Pictured below with an exhausted Darryl are - Shirley to his right and Nola to his left. Darryl has worked closely with these ladies over the past 5 or so years - it was a bit of a shock to see just how many of their works he had been involved with. Exhibition closes 5th May so there's still a few more days to see this wonderful work.

Water, Water everywhere ......

Last week was full-on at the shop, culminating in an even busier weekend catering for an RFS run First Aid course at Tenterfield HQ both Saturday and Sunday, as well as managing to squeeze in my own BFS training on the Saturday afternoon covering the practical portion of BF Equipment.

Why do I do this to myself - by Thursday I am looking forward to Friday 'cause its the end of the week and I reckon I can put my feet up over the weekend ... Ha!!

It was gratifying to experience team work from the trainees and their Trainer - it made the afternoon run smoothly.

Smiles, concentration, questions and answers, soggy boots, improvisation and generally enjoying ourselves - made for the perfect classroom situation.

RFS Northern Regional Exercise

Just before Easter the Northern Regional Exercise celebrated its 10th year of being. This year in excess of 450 Rural Fire Service volunteers and staff participated in a variety of heart pumping scenarios that took place in and around Glen Innes between 26th and 28th March.

Not all the scenarios were photographed since this photographer was primarily there as part of the catering crew. Maths was never one of my strongest subjects but by my calculations there would have to have been at least 3500 meals put together - possibly even more. Visit the gallery to see more photos.

Not wanting to miss out on seeing familiar faces, wonderful art, poetry, music and local wine I grabbed my trusty camera and chucked on some lippy and off I went to the opening of what has become a local event - 'A Brush with Verse' - held at the Forest to Furniture Gallery in Tenterfield (25 March -25 April). Fresh Start for The Blog

After a bumpy start to the world of blogging - no time in other words - I have been badgered by persons who shall remain nameless to get my finger out. So here goes AGAIN!

If you haven't been to our website - then it's about time you did! No pressure of course.

One of the things that I did want to see on the website was an Events page - somewhere for us to put information or photos of events that Darryl & Ruth attend or for that matter TenterGrafiX attends. Of course it might only be a little blurb and a few photos, in which case it will be in the Blog. Anyway - it will be somewhere so just keep looking. We can't be everywhere of course and we are bound to miss something (so please forgive us in advance) but the more we can get Tenterfield out there ... well what more can I say.

In the mean time - you might be interested in the Borderline Regional Arts Association 'ART TRAIL 2010' - it's been running since 26th February and won't finish until 5th May so there is plenty of time to follow the Bruxner Highway to Tenterfield and out through Sevenlea and Stanthorpe on the New England Highway calling in to 40 different venues to view the exhibiting artists. A must see.
