It’s no secret the game is not boding too well in Korea, and many were concerned as to what exactly is happening. Finally En Masse decided to update us via a press release on the expected release date of TERA Online, which is now set to “sometime in spring of 2012“.

Chris Lee, vice president of publishing for En Masse Entertainment commented on this news saying that the extra time will give them a chance to deliver a more polished product. Hopefully that will be the case, despite thousands of disappointed fans awaiting for this game for some time now.

One additional theory for such a rather late release is that Bioware plans to release Star Wars: The Old Republic in december. That would certainly take a huge chunk of potential TERA players away from the game as rarely anyone has time for two MMORPGs at a time. In addition to that Blizzard stated just a couple of days ago that they intend to get Diablo III ready for this year as well, so with two major titles coming I can certainly see an impact on TERA’s initial subscriber base.

Hopefully this delayed release really will help the developers make Tera Online a better game than it already is, and since to the best of my knowledge there are no other major MMO games planned for release in spring 2012, it should be a decent time to finally get TERA out to the masses.

The answers are from Hyun-Kyu Park, Executive Developer, Kang-Suk Kim, CEO, and Lead Graphic artist Chul-Woon Hwang.

Some of the topics discussed are graphics, endgame content, battlefields, the political system, changes made since the stress test, level cap, dungeons and more.

“TERA’s max level to be 50, enjoy politics and battlefields.”

“TERA is no longer a ‘heavy’ game.”

We are not talking about the client size, we are talking about how easy it is to approach the game and the difficulty of it. Chul-Woong Hwang of Bluehole studio’s graphics team and Executive Developer Hyun-Kyu constantly reminded everyone during the 3 day press conference that “Tera is not a hard game.”

After the stress test there were many complaints about the difficulty of aiming so the developers increased the hitbox of the crosshairs. They’ve started to focus on “fun” as well as balance in TERA and they’ve also tried to make the game look overall brighter through recently released posters.

As a result they’ve created a more “light” looking TERA which they feel will make the game more approachable. There are many interesting features that have changed for the OBT since the stress test.

Expierence the ‘lighter’ TERA during the OBT

Q. Recently you’ve changed the genre of the game from non-targeting to free targeting.

The genre we consider TERA, whether it’s called free targeting or non-targeting, is a simple tool to differentiate TERA from other games. TERA is an MMORPG with action elements, but the game itself is not an action game. If we call TERA a non-targeting game, many people expect an action game. Throughout the game’s various tests, we tried to make TERA easier to get into, adding a lock-on system and many other improvements.

After those changes we also decided to rename the non-targeting system to “free targeting system”. Let’s be honest free targeting rolls off the tongue better doesn’t it? It doesn’t sound so negative.

Q. What changes were made after the Stress Test?

We’ve been focused on balance. PVP balance was the one we worked on the most. We didn’t focus on PVP balance before the stress test, so we’re taking our time balancing it now. We’re also trying to add more fun and balance to PvE.

In addition, we changed the interface around to be easier to use.

Q. It’s been difficult for Priests and Archers to hit their targets.

The heal targeting system went through an overhaul. During the stress test, the healing aim reticle was just a small dot, requiring precise accuracy to be successful. Now we have increased the size and made it a circle, meaning if you are slightly off there is a chance the heal will still hit.

The size of the crosshair varies between classes. Since Archers only have to aim at enemies, they have a large crosshair. Priests need to have accurate aim to heal allies so the crosshair is smaller. It should be a lot easier to hit your target now.

Q. All races are different sizes, will this effect anything in game?

It wil, from attack range to receiving heals, there are pros and cons depending on character size. Some say Elin Lancers will be hard to heal and we are currently thinking of ways to fix this.

Being small comes in handy in other ways, though. Late in the game, there is a dragon that breathes fire. If an Elin gets close enough to the dragon, the fire will just pass over her.

Q. New posters and illustrations give TERA a brighter feel.

Previously, TERA was seen as a very heavy and dark game but during the CBTs we’ve become a bit lighter. We’ve tried to appeal to more players by having brighter posters and illustrations.

End game content will be politics and Dungeons

Q. What are some of the things we’ll experience for end game content?

This depends on the phases of the end game. We are thinking level 38 will be the level cap during the OBT and after release it will progressively increase. For now we are thinking it will be level 50. Once you hit level 50 you will be able to experience politics and battlefields.

Q. Many people say Korean games tend to lack end game content.

TERA’s end game will follow typical patterns and events, including farming dungeons and other activities made popular by other MMORPG games. We have worked very hard to deliver unique and exciting dungeons but we know that alone is not enough.

That is why we’ve prepared event type content. An example of a TERA event will be the political system. TERA takes the social aspect of the game very seriously so there will be regularly held political events.

Q. What types of systems will Battlefields showcase?

The 5 vs 5 battlefield will be a battle between two parties. The map will be simple with a starting point and dueling point with some architect you can destroy to get buffs and such to increase the strategic aspect of it. There will be a commander and you will be able to respawn beside the commander.

What we hope to reach and launch is the 10 vs 10 battlefield. It will include two parties on each side. The map will be capture the flag system. The map will have three flags to capture and the commander in this map will have skills to aid the party, such as dropping a meteor, scanning to locate enemies and other various support skills. Later on we will start to increase the numbers in the battlefield by 15 vs 15, 20 vs 25, etc.

The benefit of winning Battlefields will be PVP gear and guild buffs. In TERA there are both PvE and PvP gear, and you will be able to acquire the PVP gear through Battlefields.

There will also be guild buffs to earn. Guild buffs can only be acquired through battlefields and one of theses buff can increase the exp you gain. We recommend that guilds party up and try to earn buffs.

Q. There is a possibility that the political system, including the castle and the archon, will only be content for the minority.

There will be 10 Archons after the OBT. If you say they are a representative of a 50 people guild, guild members related to the archons will already be 500. And if you include other guilds that want to become archons, we think there will be enough room for a lot of people to participate. (This was a confusing part, I don’t really follow.)

Just to add, in other games Archons (Lords) were picked by the level of one’s military force or power, so a person who enjoys the game regardless of power could never become an Archon themselves. Our goal is to have a system where we reward players who play the game long enough to be able to become an Archon. It will be based one two things, power and the community. There will also be elections to choose the Archon.

If you are a person who knows everyone, there is a high chance for you to be able to become an Archon. So, we don’t think this content will be just for the minority.

Delivering story through cutscenes and dungeons.

Q. How much content are you preparing for the OBT?

We’ve basically finished the build for the OBT and are currently working on the content after that. We will reveal the update schedule sometime after the OBT. We prefer big updates rather than small itty bitty updates. We will basically have set dates for delivering large content through a schedule.

Q. How much story can a player enjoy during the OBT?

It will be revealed up to the first continent, you will be able see the glimpse of the shadow behind it all and why you are here, who the enemy is and what you have to do. All that will be answered.

Q. We’ve heard about server vs server Battlefields. Will that be in the OBT?

Just to give you an idea of battles, everyone within one server should unite and help each other, because everyone in the server is part of Valkyion Federation.

However later on we might make it server vs server, so it will be people battling someone from another server rather than their own.

Q. What have you prepared to tell TERA’s story?

The easiest way to do it is with text but players don’t read that these days. So what we ended up doing is focusing more on the parts where it would be important in the story. For example we put in dungeons or cutscenes around the important parts of the story. We will also tell our story within the dungeons with cutscenes and even the strategy of the dungeon will be part of the story.

The most popular classes of Pre-selection are Lancer and Priest.

Q. What was the most popular class during pre-selection?

It is currently still in progress so we can’t say for sure but there were a lot more lancers and priests than we had originally thought there would be. Even though there was a lot of discussion regarding the difficulty of the Priest class there still were a lot of people picking Priest. Also many people picked Warrior from clips, most DPS were melee.

Q. There will be popular and unpopular classes, no question about it. What are you going to do about it?

We will have to fix that through balancing. This is one of the things we were afraid of from the get go. We are going to try hard to not have a certain class become horrible and rare to find. We go through a series of effective tests for each class to see their balancing issues.

One of the prime examples this is the Mystic. After the stress test, we’ve added a new skill for the Mystic. The classes that went through the most change were the archer and the mystic after the stress test.

Q. How are you censoring names that will be problematic?

We’ve stopped people from putting in swear words or a few important names from the game. Other than that you can create your name freely, that is why we’ve allowed 1 letter names. We wanted to give freedom to those deciding their name.

Q. Will the pre-selection server locks be removed after the OBT starts?

Once the OBT launches the numbers will become more stable. Right now we are being a bit strict.

TERA’s Graphics

Q. Your graphics are some of the best of current MMORPGs, what are some of the things that are most important to you?

A balance. MMORPGs have too many things to bring across. When we revealed the game around 2007 we needed a lot of content just to have the basic amount of content needed for a game.

During that process we’ve tried to bring harmony to those looking at our graphics. For example if you look at Amani & Barakas, Elin & Popori side by side you will wonder if they are even from the same game but in-game they actually look very harmonized.

From the most recent MMORPGs I think our characters have the most unique appearance out of them all.

Q. Are you going to take advantage of new technology, such as DirectX 11?

We currently have no plans for it as DirectX 11 is supported by Windows 7, Geforce 400 series or higher only supports it. Right now it is not something a massive amount of users have or need.

But TERA uses the Unreal 3 Engine and the whole engine revolves around Direct X 9 technology, though we’ve developed some things that weren’t supported by the Engine. There probably will be improvements and things added in the future to enhance the experience.

Q. If you look carefully at Elins, they have 4 ears.

Elins were designed around a young, lady-like figure. They are a pair with Popori, and originally they were also animal like characters. However we felt pressure while we tried to make different customizing options and just went ahead with a human look. I think some of the confusion left from the change resulted in that.

Q. What are the recommended system requirement for TERA?

Currently we think around GTS 250, from Radeon 4850 or higher will be able to enjoy the game with ease.

Crystals allow the player to improve the strengths that their class already possess, or they can be used in order to conquer any limitations the class may possess. This in-depth system allows the player to create their own style of play in a very detailed way. In TERA, Crystals are regarded as consumable items, meaning that if a character dies or if you decide to unequip the Crystal, it could be destroyed.

What types of Crystals are there?

There are two types of Crystals in TERA, Crystals for armour and Crystals for weapons. As you may have guessed, weapon Crystals offer bonuses and enhancements to your character’s offense. Armour Crystals, on the other hand, improve your character’s defensive and support capabilities. Crystals can be common, rare, or anything between. The rarer the Crystal, the more beneficial it is, and as you progress through the game, you will come across more powerful versions of Crystals that you may have already seen. What is truly spectacular about the Crystal system is that certain Crystals only activate under certain situations, adding a completely different dimension to character customisation and a much more tactical input than the simple “+10 Str” you commonly see in MMOs.

Time and place

As the sub-title suggests, these types of Crystals will only be activated once a certain condition has been met. This could be anything from being out of combat to attacking your enemy from behind. Whatever the condition may be, once it is satisfied, the bonuses are more rewarding than regular Crystals. Here are some examples of conditions that must be met for certain Crystals:

Attack from behind - the attack power of a player is increased if attacking from behind.

Knocked-down – This type of Crystal activates when the opponent is knocked down, increasing damage until they get up again. Also, certain Crystals are only activated if the PC is knocked down by an enemy attack.

Enraged - Monsters become enraged when in extended combat. Not only does the monster turn red, but also their speed and damage increase, meaning that the PC has to take appropriate measures. This is where the Crystal comes in! A PC with this type of Crystal has increased defence when the enemy becomes enraged.

A Crystal for every occasion

TERA´s world is littered with monsters with all manner of shapes and, more importantly, sizes. The size of your enemy can play an important role in whether or not your Crystal is going to work. TERA’s monsters come in three sizes: small minions, medium/regular monsters, and lastly your big, bad, and ugly boss monsters. It´s important that you mix and match your Crystals to suit the location and situation. That increased damage means nothing if it only works against small monsters and the big boss monster you´re facing makes Godzilla look like a cute puppy.

Monster Crystals

Small monster crystals:

Squelching Rhomb
Increased critical damage when attacking small monsters.

Boss Crystals:

Dauntless Cabochon
If knocked down by a boss monster, there is a chance to form a protective shield.

Acrimonious Cabochon
Increased critical damage when attacking boss monsters.

Class Related Crystals

Here you´ll find a few examples of how Crystals can be used to benefit the various classes.

Warrior Crystals

Warding Hexage
Chance to create a protective shield when knocked down. The protective shield absorbs a certain amount of damage from the enemy, protecting the player and letting them get back into combat.

Fleetfoot Hexage
Increases movement speed, even while in combat.

The Warrior’s strength lies in their speed and skill. Dodging fast attacks and attacking even faster is the name of the game for the Warrior. As Warriors only have leather armour, to increase their survivability, the Fleetfoot Hexage Crystal improves the Warrior’s dodging capabilities. Moreover, the Warding Hexage Crystal protects the Warrior should they ever be knocked down.

A Warrior needs good combat speed to get into advantageous positions and to complement their Evasive Roll and Death From Above skills. This is where the Fleetfoot Hexage Crystal shines. Although it may not be as powerful as the speed boost of the Swift Hexage Crystal, the Fleetfoot Hexage Crystal works even if the PC is in combat.

Lancer Crystals

Inspirational Rhomb
Possibility of HP regeneration for a period of time when knocked down.

Vigorous Rhomb
Constant HP regeneration. Essential to maintaining enemy aggro, thus complementing the Lancer’s role as a tank.

Because their heavy armour reduces their movement speed, the Lancer relies primarily on healing to survive on the battlefield. Skills like Challenging Shout maintain enemy aggro, and the Lancer’s mighty shield is used to neutralise a high proportion of enemy damage. As a result of this damage mitigation, even the smallest amount of HP recovery is effective for the Lancer, more so than any other class.

Slayer Crystals

Savage Cabochon
Increase in critical damage when attacking from behind. Major difference between critical damage from the front and from the back.

Triumphant Cabochon
Power increase when landing a critical hit.

Slayers pride themselves on their wide attacking areas, usually fighting face-to-face with the enemy. Because of this, it´s easy for a Slayer to slip behind their enemy and deal some backstabbing damage! This is where the Savage Cabochons Crystal becomes useful.

The Triumphant Cabochon Crystal adds even more damage to the Slayer’s attacks when a critical hit is landed. Together with the increased chance of critical damage from rear attacks, this leads to true devastation.

Berserker Crystals

Defiant Hexage
Increased damage when HP is below 50%.

Persistent Hexage
Increased critical damage when HP is below 50%. The increase in damage affects all attacks when low on health.

Berserkers are very unique in that they can sacrifice HP in order to gain MP. Couple this with the above Crystals, and they can be in complete control of when their Crystal capabilities are activated. High damage threshold and strong armour mean that they gain real benefits in sustaining damage. With skills like these, it´s hard to see why you would ever want to be healed!

Archer Crystals

Cruel Rhomb
Damage increase when attacking a knocked-down target.

Venomous Rhomb
Strong poison effect when landing a critical hit on a knocked-down target.

Archers can attack enemies from near or far, and they are unique in their constant barrage of attacks. They can protect themselves with various traps that can slow down or even stun enemies, leaving them open to being knocked down. When they are in this state, that’s when the Archer can benefit from the above Crystals. Because the Archer can unleash a constant stream of damage, they have an increased chance of landing a critical hit. So they can really turn up the damage counter and add status effects at the same time!

Sorcerer Crystals

Cunning Cabochon
Increases maximum MP.

Glistening Cabochon
MP regeneration when landing a critical hit from behind the enemy.

Sorcerers are very dependent on MP in order for them to deal out the damage they want. Like the Lancer, the Sorcerer can also gain constant regeneration – only this time it´s MP, not HP! A different approach would be to increase their maximum pool of MP, allowing them to last longer in battle, and only worry about MP regeneration once out of combat with skills like Mana Infusion.

As a result of long cast times for powerful spells, the Sorcerer sees fewer critical hits than other classes. However, with the cunning use of the Flame Pillar skill, which deals multiple hits, and the Glistening Cabochen Crystal, the Sorcerer can increase their chances of critical hits and thus their MP regeneration.

Priest Crystals

Infused Hexage
Continuous MP regeneration.

Warding Hexage
Chance to create a protective shield when knocked down. This Crystal is exactly the same as the Crystal seen in the Warrior section above.

Major MP is consumed when the Priest has to heal himself or his allies. It is vital that the Priest has enough MP to execute his role. What use is a healer if they can´t heal? This is where Infused Hexage comes in, allowing the Priest to constantly regenerate MP, so they don’t have to worry about how much MP is being consumed during combat.

As a result of the Priest’s cloth armour, they have to find alternative methods to boost their defensive capabilities. The Priest has fast self-healing spells, but, should he be knocked down, he is very vulnerable to attacks. Like the Warrior, The Priest can also use the Warding Hexage Crystal to neutralise some damage when in this state – then they can get up, heal themselves, and get back into the action.

Mystic Crystals

Infused Hexage
Continuous MP regeneration. Mystics need all the MP they can get their hands on!

Resolute Hexage
Decreased damage received when HP is less than 50%.

Mystics can be very versatile in the way they act in combat. Summoning creatures, casting beneficial magic to help allies, and directing negative spells towards enemies are just a small part of the Mystic’s arsenal. The Mystic’s spells either consume MP upfront or deplete their mana pool gradually. Either way, Mystics need to be careful it doesn´t run out completely.

Mystics also need to avoid receiving damage when their MP is too low, otherwise they will find it very hard to heal themselves. This is where the Resolute Hexage Crystal comes in handy, decreasing enemy damage should the Mystic be low on HP.

Quest Difficulty

1. Locating Quest Objectives

Sometimes when you’re on a quest, you may end up scratching your head wondering where a particular monster or item is. When that happens press the L key to open the quest log. Inside, you’ll find some highlighted blue text within the quest text.

If you click on the blue text to the left, the location will be marked on the map to your right.

As seen above, if you click the blue text, a bright red marker will appear on your map showing the location of the quest’s objective. Using this handy feature, you should never struggle to complete a quest ever again!

2. Combo Skills

This testing client will feature many more skills than the CBT3 client did. To help you use new skills easily, the developers have added the combo system.

Combo skills will be on the right side of the center of the screen.

As seen above, combo skills will appear if you do something to begin a combo chain and you can press the Space Bar to execute the combo skill. There are two situations in which combo skills become available for use.

Example 1) Using specific skills to activate combo skills.
A Warrior’s tornado skill is only usable after a dodge. A Slayer’s bisection slash is only usable after the skill smash.

Example 2) Combo skills activated in reaction to a situation.
When the player is knocked back, the skill soaring attack will become active. Recently we have made it so that when soaring attack becomes active, all you have to do is press space bar to recover and get back up.

As you can see, many useful skills will be activated situationally, but the most important thing is your style and how you want to play the game. Hopefully you can all come to personalize the combo system!

3. Acquiring Enhancement Crystals

Enhancement crystals are used to enhance weapons and equipment. Crystals are placed in special gear slots to buff stats and abilities.

You can acquire crystals by:

Killing monsters.

Buying them from a shop.

Beginning with this test, you will be able to buy crystals from Enhancement Crystal vendors.

You will be able to buy enhancement crystals in the first town you visit, the Island of Dawn’s Expedition Base Camp. Be careful that you don’t just walk past it! Make sure you buy some crystals because they will help you in a lot combat.

Ramsha in Island of Dawn sells the enhancement crystals.

Crystals with unique effects or very good attributes drop off of specific monsters.

4. Enchanting Gear

You can enchant gear anywhere around the world.

In the UI mode, if you press the ‘Life’ tab you’ll be able to select the Enchant menu. To enchant your gear you need three types of items.

The piece of gear you want to enchant.

The Gear that will be used as the ingredient.
– The gear that will be used as an ingredient will have to be of the same equipment slot and item level.
ex) If you want to enchant a 3rd stage Shining Bow, you’d need to use any weapon that is also on the same stage. (Amira: This is pretty unclear! We’ll have to wait for a clarification from EME or another translation.)

Enchantment Dust

You can purchase the dust in a town’s general store.

5. Valkyon Points

(Amira: I am not sure this is the proper title for them! Keep that in mind :])

Valkyon Points can be acquired through quests or instanced dungeons. The points can be spent in the “Velika Strategic Headquarters” on armor or weapons.

The weapons acquired with Valkyon points are fairly high quality, so you’ll be able to replace your main weapon or you can use them as ingredients for gear enchanting.

Valkyon Points have many grades and each grade has a different vendor.

As you can see, you can only trade Valkyon Points at the Velika Strategic Headquarters so if you happen to visit Velika make sure you take the time to visit!

The Headquarters is located on the Northwest of Velika.

6. Quest Difficulty

In TERA there are many monsters that you can solo but there are also many monsters that you cannot solo.

At times you will be given a quest to hunt a difficult monsters. In that case, a very obvious indicator will appear next to the quest.

Because of this, it is always a good idea to look at the quest difficulty before you proceed with a new quest. This may save you unnecessary deaths!

The above quest log contains Solo, Mix, Party and Skull quest markers. Here’s a run down of what they mean!

Solo – You should be able to solo this quest with ease and the quest location will be in a solo play area.

Mix – The quest takes place in an area with both solo and party monsters.

Party – Most of the monsters will be party level monsters and they will be difficult to solo.

Skull – This means the quest will involve a monster that is very difficult to solo.

Quest text in Orange - This means the quest is meant for a higher level character. If you find orange quests hard to do on your own, try and gather some party members or try again after gaining few more levels.

[Monster called Suspicious Cultist]
A monster marked with skull means it is hard to solo.

Thank you for reading this guide and hope to see you all in the World of Arborea!
