Happy 13th Birthday to my oldest son

My son is not an easy child to buy presents for. His main interest is the computer, which leaves my with very little options. Birthday and Christmas typically make me want to pull my hair out. So what was I going to do that was special for my "turning 13" kid? My best idea was to paint the rock at the school where he takes 2 classes a week (home schooled for the rest). So I reserved the rock and took two of my other kids to help me paint it.

Looks great right? The next morning I drive my son to school only to find that someone has painted over our masterpiece. I charge in the school ready to rip someone apart for messing up my one surprise and someone is there apologizing profusely to me (couldn't at least let me yell a little!!!)

I had one more surprise and in store and fortunately this one went off without any problems. I had arranged to have a computer cake made and it was AWESOME!!! Huge thanks to https://www.facebook.com/absolutesweetnesscakes.

Next came the attempt to get ONE good picture of all my kids. Thank you Kayla, Hannah, Jonah and James for smiling. The birthday boy looks miserable!

My daughters fiance decided he would photo bomb the pictures that were going so beautifully! You can't tell, but Noah is finally smiling.

Providence Day Enrichment

Recently I was contracted by Providence Day Extended Day program to photograph some of their enrichment activities. I wish there had been a program like this around when I was a kid. They offer tons of enrichment activities that the kids can sign up for. Everything from dance, horseback, sports, cooking, art, etc. If a child has an interest in it, there is a class there for them. On this day I got to walk around and photograph some candid shots of various enrichment classes.

This was a blue tongued something or other. It really had a very blue tongue. But it was camera shy and every time I tried to get a shot of his tongue he would suck it back in.

During this incredible summer heat I had the great pleasure of working with these adorable twins. We had so much fun at the park even the ducks couldn't stay way. Everywhere we went they followed us. This pleased my little models, but it is very hard to compete with a gaggle of geese. Fortunately it was nearly impossible to take a bad picture of these two cuties.

I recently had the pleasure of spending the evening with a fun group of teens, taking pictures of them doing what they do! I was accompanied on this shoot by my very active two year old. Normally this would not be a problem, but this location had a pond!!! You see my dilemma. With the help of the above mentioned teens we got in quite a few good shots. Last weekend I got to spend some time with an old client. Well she isn't old actually....she is only one....but I've been working with her since she was just crawling. Ms. "S" is one of the most active, expressive toddlers I have worked with. She is so much fun and definitely keeps me on my toes. This session involved a lot of running (for both of us), multiple clothes changes and quite a few cookies (the only thing she would sit for). I think we were all exhausted after this.

Senior Prom ~ ~ ~

This is it! The last dance! The senior Prom!!!! They've been planning for months. Shopping for the perfect dress, the right shoes, the coordinating jewelry.....and it all came together for one special night. I have never been accused of being over emotional. I don't cry often. But I have to admit that I got a little choked up when I saw my girls coming down the stairs looking gorgeous. The little tear in my eye was overshadowed by my best friends open mouth blubbering.....but that is the norm for her so I don't think anyone even noticed.....and I wouldn't have wanted it any other way! So after all 10+ teens pulled out of my driveway for their big night, there we were, me and my best friend......the person who has been by my side for years sharing all of our childrens joys and sorrows........and she looks at me and says "what are we going to do when she gets married?" Whaaaaaaaaaaa...............

My gorgeous friend is not only beautiful but super smart.....and the best massage therapist I know. So she wanted a few images for her facebook page and asked me to take them. What photographer wouldn't want to photograph her?!? She is tall.....blond.....blue eyed......what could go wrong here??? So here is a few of the images I captured. I had a really hard time narrowing it down to the 5-7 she was asking for. She just doesn't take a bad picture!

Lazy 5 Ranch......and a new phobia!!!

Saturday seemed like a great day to take the kids to Lazy 5 Ranch. Little did I know that this trip would be the beginning of yet another strange fear for my oldest child. What is this fear you might ask? Huge buffalo? Nope! Angry zebras? Nope! Enormous giraffes? Nope.....no....my daughter is afraid of.......ostriches!!! Yes, I said ostriches. When they came near the car she retreated to the back of the suburban until they were gone. Now I am sure she has a very legitimate reason for fearing these birds.....but we haven't figured it out yet. Jonah, the 2 year old, happens to love ostriches and even fed. He really had no choice as Kayla tossed the food into his lap while she was diving into the back seat. I'm sure a good mother would have tried to comfort her child in her moment of panic. What did I do? What any mother of four would do.....laughed hysterically while calling the ostriches over to the car!!! Honestly if you need some cheap therapy head to the Lazy 5 Ranch.....you'll laugh the whole time.

Last week I was approached by a company and asked to do a product shot for them. As most of you know this is not my typical, pregnant moms-tiny babies-cute toddlers type of job. But I figured it would give it a go and see how I liked it. I have to admit it was a bit odd working with something that I didn't have to entertain or tell how to stand, sit, or pose. And when I dropped the roller nothing bad happened (small babies tend to cry if you drop them.....which for those of you wondering, I have NEVER done!). So all in all I enjoyed doing product photography and hope to get the chance to do some more. Here are a few shots of what I was working with.

Beautiful weather in the Queen City = day at the park

The weather has been so gorgeous here lately so I decided to take my oldest and my youngest to the park the other day. Of course I had my camera in hand to take all those cute moments. I didn't think I would be photographing wildlife.....but when I saw this goose flying over the water I figured I would snap a few shots and see what I got. This is what I ended up with. While not the perfect shot I was pretty pleased with what I captured seeing as how I had less than 2 seconds to prepare my camera (and keep my 2 year old from jumping in the water). I actually did get some of my kids.....and I'll post those later!!!

Black and White Hollywood Glamour session ;-)

Tuesday night I met up with a group of photographer friends and we did some black and white hollywood glamour shots.......think Marilyn Monroe. This is a completely different style of shooting than what I am use to and it was a fabulous learning experience. Dramatic lighting is definitely fun to work with and black and white is very forgiving (anyone over 35 knows what I mean). Below are some of my favorite images from the night.

Happy Valentines Day

Right before Valentines Day I had the opportunity to participate in a boudoir photo shoot. Since the majority of my clients are age 5 and under this was a stretch from my norm and I was thrilled to have the chance to do something different. I was a bit worried that I would feel odd photographing scantly dressed women but within minutes we were all having a great time. Here are a few images from out shoot.

Sunday I spent the afternoon with two of my favorite seniors, my daughter and her best friend (who just happens to be living with us). It was an unseasonably warm February day and we took advantage of it by heading out doors for part of our shoot. Spending any amount of time with these two girls will have you smiling for hours. They are so much fun and we spent most of the day laughing. I'm not sure the male photographer friend that was along for the shoot had quite as much fun as we did.....but at least now he knows what it's like to have teenage girls.

Have your cake and eat it too

I didn't think there was anyone who didn't like cake....other than me....but that's a different story! But baby "C" was not overly excited about his cake. We tried several times to get him interested but he just wasn't going for it......until I brought out the fork (I guess he doesn't like eating with his hand). Not sure why this made a difference but it did. Boy was I glad cause there are only so many pictures you can take of a boy crying over his cake ;-) But this little guy is so cute it really wouldn't have mattered what he did.

Lions and Tigers and Me......oh my!!!

This past weekend I had the most amazing opportunity to shoot lions and tigers up close and personal. When I say personal I mean PERSONAL!!! Almost two year old Ellie was allowed to roam freely with us. This didn't bother me at all.....but some in the group were a bit nervous. Ellie ran around and played with "brown dog" her best friend (see adorable images below) while we went into another fenced in area to see the BIG cats!!! There is no way to describe their massiveness (is that a word?). A picture simply does not do them justice. They are beautiful, magnificent creatures and I can't wait to go back and visit them again.

North Carolina School of the Arts applicant

She is aspiring to attend the North Carolina School of the Arts for her senior year in high school to focus on drama and opera and needed a head shot to put with her application. Ok, it's actually not James Bond.....it's Lizzy and Kayla, my two oldest daughters! BUT they were dressed up in full spy gear for a very covert operation (which shall remain nameless) and I felt the need to document it for posterity (or possibly black mail at a later date). This was a very impromptu photo session (if you can even call it that) at midnight so forgive the bad lighting and just appreciate the humor in these images.

Chocolate, flowers and jewelry are all great gifts for Valentines Day. But who needs all of that when you have a tiny tot that is as cute as this??? Really, she was the most petite one year old with just two front teeth poking through. What could be cuter? I did have some difficulty getting her to be modest. She just wasn't crazy about keeping the feathers in her lap....they seemed to inhibit her ;-) But when you are as cute as this who's going to argue!!!
