NEW ORLEANS - Rachel Alexandra’s connections decided on Sunday to forgo a start in the April 9 Apple Blossom Invitational at Oaklawn and a meeting with Zenyatta.

“I decided today she will not be going to the Oaklawn Invitational on April 9,” owner Jess Jackson said in a press release.

Rachel Alexandra, Horse of the Year in 2009, lost her first start of 2010 on Saturday, going down by three-quarters of a length to Zardana in the New Orleans Ladies, her first defeat since 2008. Earlier Sunday morning, Asmussen said that Rachel came out of her race in good health, eating well Saturday night, and appearing to be in good spirits Sunday morning. Nevertheless, he and Jackson decided she would remain at Fair Grounds for now, rather than shipping to Oaklawn to take up her training there later this week, and would not meet Zenyatta in the Apple Blossom.

Jackson said in a release: “Yesterday’s race while a disappointment, helped us define Rachel Alexandra’s racing condition. While she is healthy, just as I had anticipated, she is not in top form. Therefore, I decided today she will not be going to the Oaklawn Invitational on April 9. Steve and I discussed this fully and we now regret we tried to accelerate her training in order meet the Apple Blossom schedule. We have a whole season before us to help define her greatness. She will tell us when her next race will be.”

Earlier Sunday, Asmussen had said she was unlikely to run in the Apple Blossom.

“She’s not where we want physically,” he said. “That most likely eliminates the Apple Blossom. We’re not comfortable with how she responded to the accelerated program, so we’re going to continue to train her at Fair Grounds and see what happens.”

With Rachel Alexandra out of the Apple Blossom Invitational, the purse will revert to $500,000, rather than the $5 million Oaklawn had offered if Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta had both started in the race.

Asmussen said there’s no specific date set for Rachel Alexandra’s next workout.

Rachel Alexandra’s course of training through the winter in New Orleans did not unfold smoothly. She missed time in December and January because of wet and cold weather, and was on a tight schedule to make the New Orleans Ladies, her potential Apple Blossom prep. In Saturday’s race, Rachel Alexandra pressed a demanding half-mile pace, took the lead into the far turn, but was worn down by Zardana through the stretch run.

“She’s clearly not up to her previous level,” Asmussen said. “We’re going to regroup and come back again. The disappointment from yesterday continues.”

Asmussen refused to make any excuse for Rachel Alexandra’s defeat at odds of 1-20. Both Asmussen and jockey Calvin Borel, however, said Rachel Alexandra tired late in her first race after six-month layoff.

“She blew after the race, but she wasn’t exhausted,” Asmussen said Sunday morning. “She drank plenty of water afterwards. It took her a little while to leave the test barn, but she went back to the barn comfortably. She went right to her feed tub last night, and she was in very good health this morning.”

NEW YORK — New York Jets coach Rex Ryan underwent a weight-loss procedure Saturday to help him fight obesity. The husky Ryan had lap-band surgery at NYU Medical Center, and was relaxing at his home Saturday night in New Jersey, team spokesman Bruce Speight told The Associated Press.Speight said Ryan also had a hernia repaired. The New York Daily News first reported the story on its Web site Sunday morning. The outpatient procedure came a day after Ryan and the Jets wined and dined free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson, trying to persuade him to join the team that had the league’s No. 1 rushing offense last season. The 47-year-old Ryan frequently has poked fun at himself and his rotund midsection, including after unflattering belly-baring photos of him changing into a Hurricanes jersey during a Florida-Carolina NHL game last month floated around the Internet.”I’m watching ESPN and I’m like, ‘Whoa, that’s not a real good shot,’ ” Ryan said during the NFL combine. “I mean, don’t get me wrong, I get hit on all the time by women.”Ryan also partially blamed his weight for him not getting the head coaching job with the Atlanta Falcons after the 2007 season. He thought he was a shoo-in for the job that eventually went to friend and former Baltimore Ravens colleague Mike Smith.”I think I was too fat,” Ryan said with a laugh in December.Ryan weighed 340 pounds at the start of last season, gaining at least 30 pounds after he was hired by the Jets in January 2009. He even tried a liquid diet during training camp and lost 20 pounds, but quickly gained it right back.In a lap-band procedure, a plastic band is inserted that encircles a patient’s stomach, effectively shrinking it and curbing the appetite.
Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press

SAO PAULO — Will Power made a late overtaking move to take the lead from Ryan Hunter-Reay to win the rain-shortened IndyCar season opener on the streets of Sao Paulo on Sunday. The Australian passed the American with three laps to go, clinching the inaugural Sao Paulo Indy 300 for his second career victory.Power crossed the line 1.858 seconds ahead of Hunter-Reay when the race ended at the two-hour time limit with only 61 of the 75 scheduled laps completed.

Streeter Lecka/Getty ImagesWill Power celebrates after his second career victory, which came in the IndyCar opener at Sao Paulo, Brazil. The race had to be red-flagged near its halfway point after heavy rains made track conditions unsafe, marking another setback for the track which was initially being hailed as one of the highlights of the season but faced problems throughout the weekend.Home crowd favorite Vitor Meira was third, followed by compatriot Raphael Matos at the 2.6-mile, 11-turn Anhembi temporary circuit in South America’s biggest city.Danica Patrick lost control of her car as it started raining, finishing 15th.Power, whose other victory was last year in Edmonton, got out of his car and celebrated with the thousands of fans packing the grandstands of the stadium-like Sambadrome where the race took place.”I feel awesome,” the Penske driver said. “We battled it out, it was a great day.”There were only about three minutes left when Power overtook Hunter-Reay, breaking late to make the pass at the end of the long backstretch. The win was extra special for Power, who last year sustained a season-ending back injury in a crash in Sonoma and only landed a full-season deal with Penske late.”It’s been a tough recovery,” he said. “I’m very grateful to be given this opportunity. I laid in bed at the hospital and never thought it was going to happen.”Hunter-Reay dominated much of the race with his Andretti Autosport car, but was not able to contend at the end.”I had a blast all day,” said Hunter-Reay, who led for the first time since Watkins Glen in 2008. “I had so much fun with conditions changing all the time, that’s what racing is about.”Power’s Penske teammate Ryan Briscoe got past Hunter-Reay for the lead late in the race, but he crashed with about 13 minutes left after missing a corner. Both had been battling each other for several laps until Briscoe lost control. It was the first time in IndyCar Series history that the race was run on the same day as qualifying, which was postponed from Saturday because the front straight was too slick and drivers complained it made racing unsafe. Officials added grooves to the track overnight and fixed the problem in time for qualifying.Defending series champion Dario Franchitti earned his 13th career pole earlier in the day. He led the race after it was interrupted, but eventually fell to seventh at the end after sticking with rain tires longer than the other drivers. The race had to be red-flagged when pouring rain created deep puddles throughout the newly built street track.Just before the red flag, Alex Tagliani — who led early in the race — crashed with Brazil’s Tony Kanaan after being touched from behind by Dan Wheldon. The start of the race was marked by a scary incident involving U.S. driver Marco Andretti, who escaped injury after his car was hit from behind. The car of Brazilian driver Mario Moraes finished on top of Andretti’s and they slid tangled for several yards. The bottom of Moraes’ car appeared to be touching Andretti’s helmet, and it took more than five minutes for officials to remove Moraes’ car so the medical team could attend to Andretti.Andretti and Moraes were slowing down as other cars made contact in front of them, including former Formula One driver Takuma Sato, Franchitti’s teammate Scott Dixon, three-time Indy 500 Helio Castroneves and even Briscoe. It was extremely dusty where the grooves were added and dirt was being constantly thrown into the air, causing visibility problems. The Sambadrome straight stretches for about a third of a mile and was the only part of the track with concrete instead of asphalt, which was what caused the grip problems and forced officials to work overnight to allow drivers to race hard in qualifying and the race. The street circuit was set up in about three months and was expected to be one of the highlights of the season, with the Sambadrome and the series’ longest ever straight, which is just short of a mile and allowed for a lot of overtaking on Sunday. But the problems on the track this weekend dampened much of that enthusiasm.IndyCar officials were hoping for a clean race as the series tries to expand in the United States and abroad, looking to carry the momentum from a thrilling season a year ago when three drivers reached the final race with a chance to take the title.
Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press

ARLINGTON, Texas — Fighting on the star, Manny Pacquiao showed once again why he is such a star. With the biggest fight crowd in the U.S. in 17 years cheering him on at Cowboys Stadium, Pacquiao dominated a strangely passive Joshua Clottey from the opening bell Saturday night to retain his welterweight title and cement his status as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The fight wasn’t close, and it was never in doubt. It was so one-sided that even those in the cheap seats among the crowd of 50,994 could tell without looking at the giant video screens over the ring that Pacquiao was in total command.

Rafael: Show And Prove

Round after round, Manny Pacquiao, the greatest fighter in the world, proved he’s truly one of the best, Dan Rafael writes. Story

One ringside judge gave Pacquiao every round, while the two others gave him all but one. The Associated Press scored it a shutout for the Filipino sensation. It wasn’t as flashy as his knockout of Ricky Hatton or as savage as the beating he gave Oscar De La Hoya, but there was no doubt Pacquiao was in command the entire way against a fighter who kept his gloves up high in front of his face and chose to engage him only in spurts. Clottey’s strategy worked to keep him upright, but he was never competitive in the biggest fight of his career.”He’s a very tough opponent,” Pacquiao said. “He was looking for a big shot.”Pacquiao was supposed to have been fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. instead of Clottey, but the megafight fell apart over a dispute over blood testing. He took out any frustrations over losing the biggest fight of his career by beating up Clottey on the biggest stage of his career.”I want that fight, the world wants that fight, but it’s up to him,” Pacquiao said. “I’m ready to fight any time.”That time won’t come soon. Mayweather is fighting Shane Mosley on May 1, and the earliest the two could get together would be in the fall and only if Mayweather backs off his demands for blood testing.

Pac-ing Them In

Saturday was a big night in Big D. The 50,994 in attendance marked the third-largest indoor crowd for a U.S. boxing event.

The fight this night was more of an event than a real competition, bringing in the biggest crowd in the U.S. for a fight since Julio Cesar Chavez fought Pernell Whitaker at the Alamodome in 1993. It paid off handsomely for Pacquiao, though, who earned at least $12 million and built on the reputation he has gained as one of the greatest fighters of his time.Promoters not only sold out the 45,000 seats available for the bout, but added thousands more standing room only “party passes” for fans who could get a glimpse of the action and see every drop of sweat on the huge overhead screens.”It’s one of the most incredible stories not just in boxing but anywhere,” promoter Bob Arum said. “Fourteen years ago he was sleeping in a cardboard shack in the Philippines and tonight he puts 51,000 people in this palace in Dallas.”The tone of the fight was set early, with Pacquiao advancing against his taller opponent and throwing punches with both hands from all angles. It was the same style that gave him spectacular wins in his last three fights and, though Clottey was clearly the bigger fighter, he fought back only sparingly.”Everything’s working now,” trainer Freddie Roach told Pacquiao after the third round. “It’s easy.”It was easy, too, much to the delight of the crowd and much to the delight of an entire country back in Pacquiao’s homeland. There, traffic came to a halt and huge numbers of Filipinos, including army troops and allied American soldiers, jammed theatres in shopping malls and military camps nationwide to root for Pacquiao. In what has now become a familiar scene, Filipinos repeatedly yelled his name and threw punches in the air after the country’s boxing hero was declared the winner.

“

I want that fight, the world wants that fight, but it’s up to him. I’m ready to fight any time.

”
– Manny Pacquiao, on fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Unlike most of Pacquiao’s fights, this one lacked suspense from the opening seconds of the fight, when Clottey assumed the peek-a-boo position he would remain in except for brief spurts the entire bout.”He has speed, I lost the fight,” Clottey said. “He’s fast, that’s why I was taking my time.”Arum said he wasn’t disappointed in the effort put out by Clottey, who was guaranteed to make at least $1.25 million.”What was he supposed to do? If he played offense he’d get knocked out,” Arum said. “I can’t blame the kid for trying to wear him down.”Clottey seemed content to hold his hands high in a peek-a-boo style through much of the early rounds, trying to pick off Pacquiao’s punches and perhaps rally late. But he gave away round after round, despite landing some clean punches on the rare occasions when he would throw a combination.”You gotta take a chance,” Clottey’s trainer, Lenny DeJesus, implored him after the sixth round. “You’re in a fight and you gotta start taking chances.”Clottey didn’t, though, and his prize was that he was the first fighter in Pacquiao’s last six fights to make it to the final bell. The only suspense when it came time to announce the decision was whether the three ringside judges would give Clottey any of the rounds.Pacquiao threw three times as many punches as Clottey, an average of 100 a round, and landed as many power shots as Clottey threw. Final punch stats showed Pacquiao landing 246 of 1,231 punches to 108 of 399 for Clottey.Clottey had gotten the fight off a good performance in his last bout against Miguel Cotto, but he was clearly more concerned with surviving the all-out assault that Pacquiao is noted for than winning the fight.”Joshua Clottey had the power to knock him out but was reluctant to punch,” DeJesus said. “We clearly got beat. I don’t think he won a round.”Roach agreed, saying he saw nothing in Clottey to win.”He had a good defense, but defense isn’t enough to win a fight,” Roach said.
Copyright 2010 by The Associated Press

New Chapter In The Agassi/Sampras Feud
Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, in what began as an attempt at levity during a charity doubles match, launched their legendary rivalry into uncharted waters over the weekend in Indian Wells, Calif.Sampras, teamed with Roger Federer, and Agassi, alongside Rafael Nadal, gave a new twist to a decades-old exchange in the Hit for Haiti charity fundraiser at the BNP Paribas Open. With the one-set match even at 4-4 on Friday night, Sampras and Federer took a 40-love lead in the ninth game, with Sampras appearing to put a little extra on his serves. All of the players were wearing microphone headsets.”You always have to go get serious, huh, Pete?” Agassi asked to the delight of a laughing crowd.Sampras then double-faulted, and the show began.”OK, Andre, I’ll joke around a little bit,” Sampras said, with a slight hint of sarcasm. “I’m going to imitate you.”For 15 seconds, Sampras mocked Agassi’s pigeon-toed walk in a circle behind the baseline. Gathering himself to serve, he directed a broad smile at Agassi directly across from him.But Sampras didn’t stop there.

Roger Federer and Pete Sampras played Rafael Nadal and Andre Agassi in one doubles match Friday night, while Steffi Graf and Lindsay Davenport took on Justine Henin and Martina Navratilova. Watch replay

With racket in hand, he awkwardly pinched and rolled his shirt-tail inward in another apparent ribbing of Agassi.”Say something, say it,” Sampras then declared to Agassi, hands in the air, asking for a comeback.”I’m waiting, I want to impersonate you,” Agassi replied.”OK, go ahead,” Sampras said.Agassi pulled out the fabric of his empty sweatpants pockets.”I don’t have any money,” Agassi said, using his left hand to continue rifling through that pocket. “No, wait, I’ve got a dollar!”In a biography released late last year, Agassi told a story in which a valet confirmed to him that Sampras had tipped him a dollar after they had eaten at the same restaurant, an establishment that was said to be in Indian Wells.”It’s all fun and games until somebody gets hurt, huh?” Agassi said.Sampras then bounced a ball as he appeared to begin to serve. But Agassi interrupted.”Look at him, he can’t help himself,” Agassi said.”This guy,” Sampras chided in return.Meanwhile, the two greats of the current era, Federer and Nadal, continued to wait out the awkward moment.”This rivalry is intense, man,” Federer said. “I mean, Rafa, start. Do something.”Sampras then resumed play. But instead of hitting to the return court where Nadal awaited his serve, Sampras darted a shot right at Agassi, who was able to dodge the ball.”It’s all right, it’s all right,” Agassi said.”That’s the way you want to play it?” Sampras jokingly said.”You know what, it’s better than being a valet driver and you pulling up,” Agassi said.Sampras couldn’t hide his look of surprise this time.”Let’s talk about our baggage,” Sampras said. “Here we go. I’m a bad tipper. I’m sorry, Barack Obama.”Play picked up again, and Nadal’s crosscourt, backhand return kept the game alive.”Wow,” Sampras said, continuing the verbal jousting with Agassi. “You got personal. You got personal with me.”"Nah, nah nah” Agassi said. “Everybody knows that already.” Sampras and Federer went on to beat Nadal and Agassi 8-6.In the women’s match, Martina Navratilova and Justine Henin beat Steffi Graf and Lindsay Davenport, 8-6.The $1 million fundraiser that also featured singer Tony Bennett was a sellout at the 16,100-seat Tennis Garden.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.

FORT MYERS, Fla. — Ryan Westmoreland, a 19-year-old outfielder and Rhode Island native widely considered to be the best position prospect in the Boston Red Sox system, is scheduled to undergo brain surgery Tuesday for an unusual congenital condition that carries significant risk of neurological damage and is potentially life-threatening.Westmoreland will undergo surgery Tuesday in Arizona, the team announced Saturday night, to remove a “cavernous malformation of the brain.”

John Corneau/Lowell SpinnersRyan Westmoreland hit .296 with seven home runs and 35 RBIs in 60 games for the Class A Lowell Spinners last season.

The condition was discovered, according to a team source, after Westmoreland began experiencing headaches and exhibiting other neurological symptoms, including numbness. He left the team’s minor league camp on March 4, according to a statement released by the team, and was diagnosed the next day at Massachusetts General Hospital. After the Red Sox flew him around the country for consultations with three specialists, the decision was made to have surgery, which is to be performed by Dr. Robert Spetzler of the Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Ariz.Westmoreland is in Arizona now with his entire family, including his parents, Ron and Robin, according to a source close to the family.

The malformation is located on the brain stem, according to multiple sources, and there has been an episode of bleeding in the brain. Typically, any further bleeding could cause severe neurological damage, according to Dr. Joseph Maroon, the vice chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and team neurosurgeon for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

A cavernous malformation, Maroon said, “is a congenital abnormality of small abnormal capillaries [tiny blood vessels] that are connecting vessels between the arteries and veins.

“These capillaries have very thin, weak walls and are susceptible to bleeding because of their thin walls. And the cortex, or brain stem, is an extremely sensitive area from which to remove [the malformation]. It’s very unusual to find these abnormalities in the brain stem.”Neurological damage resulting from a cavernous malformation could affect movement and eye function, depending on where the malformation is located, Maroon said. The malformation is typically embedded in normal tissue. “The tissue of the brain stem is extremely sensitive to disruption,” he said, “and thus requires meticulous dissection.”

Spring training updates

Gordon Edes, Joe McDonald and the rest of the ESPNBoston.com team have you covered on the Red Sox from Fort Myers. Blog

• Sox spring training photos »

Spetzler, who is both a friend and associate, Maroon said, “has as much experience with this as anybody in the world. His results with this overall are very good.

“He is who I would go to,” Maroon said, “if I needed this surgery.”Westmoreland, a resident of Portsmouth, R.I., and the state’s Schoolboy Athlete of the Year as a high school junior in 2007, was the team’s fifth-round draft choice in 2008 and accepted a higher-than-slot $2 million bonus to sign with the team rather than accept a scholarship with Vanderbilt University.”It’s unfortunate,” said Tampa Bay Rays special assistant Rocco Baldelli, also a Rhode Island native. “It’s sad. More than anything, it’s upsetting. Ryan is a great person and a great baseball player. I hope everyone respects the family’s privacy. It’s a sad situation, something I wish he didn’t have to deal with. Knowing Ryan and his family the way I do, they’re going to take care of it in the best way possible. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and I’ll be watching him very closely. He’s probably worried about getting healthy and not about playing baseball.”

Westmoreland’s brief time with the Red Sox, even though marred by injuries, was sufficient to create tremendous excitement within the organization about his potential. Jason McLeod, who this past winter left the Sox as scouting director to go to the San Diego Padres, said that Westmoreland had more upside than any other player in his five years of running the team’s amateur drafts.

Baseball America, the esteemed trade publication, ranked Westmoreland as the No. 1 prospect in the Red Sox system, even though he has played just one season in short-season Class A ball, and was projected to start in lower Class A this season.

“He’s a potential 30-30 player [30 home runs, 30 stolen bases] who one day could bat third in the Boston lineup,” Baseball America wrote in its evaluation.Westmoreland is also ranked as the Red Sox’s No. 2 prospect by ESPN.com’s Keith Law. He’s also 32nd overall in Law’s top 100 prospects.Westmoreland underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum to his throwing shoulder, a pre-existing condition, in November 2008, which limited him to mostly serving as DH at short-season Lowell last season. He then fractured his collarbone running into an outfield wall near the end of the season and had surgery in September, but was able to follow his full off-season conditioning program.”The entire Red Sox organization stands in support of Ryan as he courageously deals with this issue,” Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein said in the statement released by the team Saturday night.”Ryan is a remarkable kid and a talented player, and we understand that many will be concerned about his health. He is getting the best medical attention the world has to offer, and we will have more information soon. Until then — out of respect for Ryan’s privacy and at the request of the Westmoreland family — we will not have any further comment.”Maroon, who has performed the procedure himself but, he said, not in some time, said the operation typically can take several hours. Spetzler is expected to use advanced neuro-navigational techniques — “like a sophisticated GPS system to localize it in the brain” — and then employ microsurgical techniques and minimally invasive surgical procedures to remove the malformation.”It is potentially life-threatening, as is any brain surgery,” Maroon said, “but the mortality is low.”The prognosis for surgery? “It depends if there are any neurological deficits or not,” Maroon said, stressing that he has not examined Westmoreland or seen his records. “And how well he tolerates it.”When, or whether, he resumes playing baseball again is almost irrelevant at the moment, one member of the Sox organization said Saturday night, asking that his name be withheld because of the sensitivity of the issue.”Sure, he is a great prospect,” the Sox official said. “But he’s a fantastic kid. Very professional, very intelligent, well-spoken, a good worker — everything you’d want in a kid.”Gordon Edes covers the Red Sox for ESPNBoston.com.
Francona Addresses Matsuzaka Setback
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Whatever remote chance Daisuke Matsuzaka had of being ready for the start of the regular season all but vanished Saturday morning when he was unable to throw a batting practice session here because of stiffness in his neck.”I don’t think Opening Day was the end-all and be-all,” Red Sox manager Terry Francona said. “We just want to get him ready. I don’t think that’s the biggest decision we have right now. We just want to get him on the mound, get him going, get him stretched out.”

It was almost exactly a month ago (Feb. 12) that Matsuzaka cut short a bullpen session with what was called back tightness. The Sox insisted it was a minor setback, but Matsuzaka did not throw another bullpen session until March 5, almost three weeks later.

[+] Enlarge

AP Photo/Steven SenneTerry Francona said Daisuke Matsuzaka’s neck stiffness had nothing do to with the back issue that delayed him earlier this spring.Saturday morning, Matsuzaka was warming up for his first round of batting practice and had thrown five pitches in the bullpen when he shut it down. Red Sox publicist Pam Ganley then announced that Matsuzaka was a no-go because of a stiff neck.”I did not throw live BP today due to stiffness in my neck,” said Matsuzaka, in a written statement left with a team spokesman. “As for my schedule going forward, I’m going to see how I feel tomorrow, meet with the coaching staff, and decide at that point.”Matsuzaka returned to the Sox clubhouse and went into the training room for treatment. He left several hours later without speaking to reporters.”He talked to [pitching coach] John Farrell and decided to shut it down,” Francona said. “We’re going day to day on it. He got it worked on, we’ll wait until he shows up tomorrow. When he feels good we’ll repeat what we were going to do today.”I don’t know if that will be tomorrow or the next day or the next day.”Matsuzaka had come to camp in the best condition since he signed with the Red Sox prior to the 2007 season, spending five weeks working out at the Athletes Performance Institute in Arizona. The Red Sox had asked him to show up in better shape after a disastrous 2009 in which he made just a dozen starts, won four games and was sent back to Florida to essentially repeat spring training with a fatigued shoulder. The Red Sox were pleased with the results, but after reporting early to Florida, Matsuzaka suffered his first setback six days before the official reporting date, falling behind the other starting pitchers in camp. Now comes another setback, and while the Red Sox again insist it’s minor in nature, there is little chance of Matsuzaka throwing the 25 innings in exhibition play the Sox generally like to have their starters throw, with the season opener scheduled for April 4.There is also a possibility that Matsuzaka will have to return to Boston to attend to a family matter, which could further disrupt his preparation.

Francona said the neck issue was not related to Matsuzaka’s previous back problems, and said Matsuzaka had not experienced it previously.”I don’t think it’s anything but a stiff neck,” Francona said. “I don’t know that we need to be conservative as long as he’s OK, so we’ll see when it goes away.”It’s a reasonable expectation that when camp breaks here on April 1, the Red Sox will leave Matsuzaka behind. That would provide a temporary solution to how the Sox intend to fit six starters into five slots. The team still has five healthy starters — Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, John Lackey, Clay Buchholz and Tim Wakefield.Buchholz, who threw three scoreless innings in Saturday’s 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in City of Palms Park, was asked if knowing that Matsuzaka was hurt alleviated any anxiety he might have felt about the 6-into-5 quandary.”That’s the least of my worries right now,” he said. “I want to be on the team for the duration of the whole season. Two-and-a-half months wasn’t going to mean that much if something happens where I don’t do my job and end up in the same spot as I did last year.”I’m going to keep working regardless of how many slots there are in the line right now.”Gordon Edes covers the Red Sox for ESPNBoston.com.
