Maryland 104 Northwood 60 Exhibition

COLLEGE PARK, Md.

– Freshman Jin Soo Kim scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half, Landon Milbourne also finished with 20, and Maryland cruised past Northwood 104-60 Saturday in the Terrapins’ only men’s basketball tuneup before the regular season.

Five players scored in double figures for the Terrapins, who open the season Friday night at home against Bucknell. Cliff Tucker scored 17, Adrian Bowie had 16 and Eric Hayes contributed 15.

The game matched two coaches who have won NCAA championships. Gary Williams is entering his 20th season at Maryland, where he captured the title in 2002. Rollie Massimino, who orchestrated Villanova’s upset of Georgetown in the 1985 NCAA championship game, is about to begin his third season at Northwood.

Massimino is enjoying success at a lower level with Northwood, an NAIA team that launched its basketball program in 2006. In his two seasons under Massimino, the Seahawks are 50-16 with two appearances in the NAIA tournament.

But Northwood doesn’t have the skill to hang with good Division I teams. The Seahawks were coming off a 75-37 exhibition loss to Villanova, and the outcome against Maryland was never in doubt.

B.J. McDowell led Northwood with 13 points and DeSean White had 11.

Bowie scored 14 points on 5-for-5 shooting and Milbourne also scored 14 to help the Terrapins take a 53-35 halftime lead. Maryland outrebounded the Seahawks 24-14, turning 10 offensive rebounds into 16 second-chance points.

Milbourne had two baskets and Hayes contributed a 3-pointer in a game-opening 9-0 burst. It was 21-10 before Milbourne scored five points in an 11-3 run that upped the margin to 19 points.

Minutes later, Tucker scored six straight points to make it 40-17.

McDowell and White were the only Northwood players to score in the opening 10 minutes of the second half. After White hit a 3-pointer and a jumper to get the Seahawks to 66-45, Kim and Hayes made successive 3-pointers for the Terrapins to launch an 11-2 spree that increased the lead to 30.

Kim went 5-for-8 from the floor in the second half after an 0-for-5 first half.

Maryland welcomes back 10 of its top 12 players from last season’s team that finished 19-15 and made the program’s 15th straight postseason tournament appearance. Head coach and Maryland graduate Gary Williams enters the season with 604 career wins, 397 of which have come in 19 seasons at his alma mater. Terps ranked first in the ACC and fifth nationally last season with 224 blocked shots in 34 games (6.6. bpg), but graduated the rejection-leading tandem of James Gist (77 blocks) and Bambale Osby (69). Gist also ranked second on the team in scoring at 15.9 ppg, and Osby scored at an 11.9 clip. The big men also ranked 1-2 among Maryland rebounders. The Terps’ 4-4 record in ACC road games tied for third-best in the conference.

Greivis Vasquez earned second-team All-ACC honors last season while averaging 17 points, 5.7 rebounds and an ACC-high 6.8 assists per game. Vasquez had five games in which he handed out at least 10 assists and also led the Terps in steals with 47. He was only Maryland player to start all 34 games and ranked second in the ACC in minutes played with 37 per contest.

Eric Hayes enters his third season as a steady presence in the Terps’ backcourt. Hayes started 30 games last season, averaging 9.9 points per game and ranking second on the team in assists with 4.5. His assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.89 ranked fourth in the conference.

Landon Milbourne came on as a sophomore, averaging 8.2 points and 3.5 rebounds while making 29 starts. He scored in double figures 14 times, including an 18-point performance in a win over Florida State.

Cliff Tucker was one of several Maryland players who showed flashes of potential as a freshman, making six starts and shooting .491 percent from the floor. He averaged 4.1 points per game.

Adrian Bowie worked his way into the Terps’ rotation as a first-year player. Bowie wound up appearing in all 34 games and averaged 12.4 minutes per contest. He was one of eight Terps to average over 10 minutes of action per game.

Braxton Dupree provided frontcourt depth as a freshman, averaging 10.3 minutes per game and making eight starts. The 6-foot-8 native of nearby Baltimore blocked nine shots and averaged 2.5 points per game.

Vasquez out for exhibition

Gary Williams met with the media today at Comcast Center and said that junior guard Greivis Vasquez would miss tomorrow’s exhibition against Northwood University for an undisclosed violation of team rules.

Williams said that he also might keep freshman guard Sean Mosley out because of a mild sprained ankle, but added that the former St. Frances star would play if it were a regular season game. Mosley has been out since rolling the ankle after coming down on Vasquez’s foot in practice last Friday.

The early issue with Vasquez is interesting, considering that he is a team captain and is expected to be one of the leaders. Williams said that the issue was an off-the-court matter and that Vasquez would be back at practice Monday as the Terps continued to prepare for the season opener a week from tonight against Bucknell.

Williams said of the Vasquez benching, “It’s a good time. Better than being in the penalty box during the season.”

Asked what Vasquez did wrong, Williams said, “He’s a college student, you know what they’re like.”

Maryland’s Kim Is Eligible, After All

The NCAA Clearinghouse declared Maryland freshman Jin Soo Kim eligible for the 2008-09 season yesterday, three days after initially ruling Kim could not compete this year.

After receiving further documentation from Maryland regarding online correspondence courses Kim took during the fourth quarter of his final year of high school — he graduated in three years — the NCAA reversed the decision it had made on Friday to declare Kim ineligible.

Kim, a 6-foot-7 forward, had surgery on his shoulder in the spring. For insurance purposes he underwent the surgery in his native South Korea and withdrew from classes at South Kent School in Connecticut. The correspondence courses Kim took to complete his high school coursework had come under question by the NCAA, but those questions appear to have been answered sufficiently. Kim will begin practicing with the Terrapins tomorrow.

Maryland freshman Jin Soo Kim was denied eligibility by the NCAAClearinghouse yesterday, according to a source close to the situation. However, the decision is not yet final. Maryland has until Thursday to submit further documentation verifying that Kim was the one who took the exams necessary to complete online correspondence courses he took last spring while recovering from shoulder surgery, according to the source, who requested anonymity because the decision is pending.
Kim, a 6-foot-7 small forward, underwent shoulder surgery during the fourth quarter of his senior year at South Kent School in Connecticut. Kim’s insurance company required him to return to his native South Korea for the surgery, which forced him to withdraw from classes at South Kent. While recovering from the surgery, Kim took online correspondence courses that have come under question by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
Should the eligibility denial become final, Kim would have to attend a junior college to become academically qualified before he could return to Maryland and play for the Terrapins. A message left seeking comment from a Maryland spokesman late last night was not immediately returned. .
