“Grooming Your Dog: Basic Haircuts” is a highly instructive video from Susie Ward and Ena Lane. This DVD teaches novice groomers how to cut and comb their dogs to get a clean appearance without the aid of a professional groomer. Unlike many groomers who try their best to teach their clients how to do basic grooming, but end up missing stuff simply because they don’t think about it anymore, this DVD goes through everything in thorough detail and in a clear and cheerful manner that anyone can follow. Basic Haircuts goes through everything from brushing and combing and bathing, to trimming beards, paw pads, and giving your dog a good clipping so that you can achieve a groomer’s look without paying for it and enjoy bonding with your dog at the same time.

Grooming From Puppy to Old Dog

Some of the things which the video go through include clipping puppies, grooming old dogs safely, several different breeds which require different cuts and grooming styles, and even goes over the best way to handle different kinds of toenails, something which many dog owners find very tricky to deal with. The most important aspect of this DVD is that it is so easy to use that even someone who has never groomed a dog before can have a nicely cut and combed dog.

Groom Your Own Dog or Open up a Salon!

You can purchase this DVD through wholesalers like Amazon for around $26.00, though it can also be found in other stores and places like libraries and movie rental places. It’s definitely worth searching for if you own a dog and want to do the grooming yourself or even if you want to learn how to groom dogs and open up your own grooming salon. Regardless of your reason for purchasing this DVD, this one is well worth adding to your library and should be in the collection of any dog owner.

Dandie Dinmont Terriers are small terriers which originate between England and Scotland and are probably related to the extinct Scotch Terrier. They were originally used by farmers to hunt vermin and became a favorite of gypsies and the very wealthy. They have a weasel like body, but a broad head and topknots over their feet. Although their temperament makes them suitable for even novice owners, their coats are very unique and require special care and even more care must be taken if you’re going to show this dog because they have a very distinctive appearance and shape.

Brushing Your Dandie Dinmont

Every day, you’ll have to brush a Dandie Dinmont’s coat with a sticker brush, a pin brush, and a bristle brush. This is because this terrier has a very soft overcoat and a softish undercoat, both of which need to be carefully brushed and have the dead hairs pulled from them. With regular care, this breed of dog hardly sheds at all, so if you want to keep from having fur all over the place, regular brushing is a must.

Plucking and Hand Stripping

A couple times a year, a Dandie Dinmont has to be plucked and hand stripped, either by a groomer, or you can do it yourself. It’s very important with this breed to have a professional do it at least once so you can see how it’s done. This is because of that this breed of terrier has a very distinctive shape and appearance, which can only be seen through careful stripping and plucking. You should let a professional do it first to see how it’s done before attempting to do it yourself. Every couple of months you’ll have to trim your dog with thinning shears and a #4 or #5 blade to get rid of clumps of matted hair and to clean up your dog’s appearance, especially along the back and sides to maintain the ‘weasel like’ appearance; that is, the long appearance of this particular terrier. A #10 and #15 blade is used for the stomach and feet because this fur is much softer.

Dandie Dinmonts are Great Companions

Dandie Dinmonts don’t need a lot of bathing; you’ll mostly just have to wash yours if it gets into something smelly. Use dog shampoo and lots of patience and make sure to rinse out shampoo carefully as dried shampoo is itchy. Dandie Dinmonts make great companions as they do well even in apartments where they can’t get a lot of exercise. However, they do have particular grooming needs so be certain to either have a groomer you trust or that you learn how to do it yourself so that your terrier looks great all the time.

The Doggie Cuts DVD, with Dick Van Patten, teaches you a various set of hair cuts for both terriers and other dogs. It might not be the most comprehensive guide you can find, but it'll give you a good overview on dog grooming...

Doggie Cuts is a how to DVD starring Dick Van Patten which teaches you various hair cuts for different breeds of dog as well as teaching a basic foundation in bathing and combing. The ability to bathe and groom your own dog is one that many owners want because it will save the owner money and save the dog the hassle of going away from home to get groomed. Grooming is also a great bonding activity between a pet and his owner. Doggie Cuts goes over all of the basic things you’ll need to know about how to groom your dog, such as bathing, combing, and trimming, especially concentrating on long haired breeds since they require more cutting care.

A Good Overview on Dog Grooming

This DVD is as comprehensive as ninety minutes will allow, but of course some things are missing. For example, while you will learn how to do basic trimming and cutting, you won’t be as guided on specific things such as legs, which could be problematic if you own a breed where the leg fur has to be carefully cut and styled. Instead of getting specifics, you will be getting a good overview of what you need to know in order to cut your dog at home and make it look tidy, but certainly not ready for show or anything like that. However, if all you are looking for is information on making your dog look tidy, then this is the DVD for you.

You can find Doggie Cuts at wholesalers such as Amazon for a very reasonable price, considering the amount of information you will be receiving. It is well worth looking into purchasing this video for your library if you own dogs and want to groom your own pets instead of paying someone to do it for you. You can even use this video as a foundation for becoming a groomer yourself; it’s a great beginner’s guide to basic cuts, though it doesn’t go into the same level of detail as many other grooming books and movies.

The Glen of Imaal terriers has a weatherproofed overcoat, and a softer undercoat. In order to maintain both their appearance and usefulness of their coat, they need regular grooming...

Glen of Imaal terriers have a weatherproofed overcoat and a softer undercoat; they need regular grooming, as well as trimming and stripping in order to maintain their appearance and the usefulness of their coat. Glen of Imaals are very hairy so they need very regular grooming and as long as you keep on top of the grooming, they don’t shed very much.

Glen of Imaal terriers have a very rough outer coat which is weather proof and needs to be combed with a metal comb or a slicker brush when the dog’s fur is longer. After a cut, you should use a slicker brush because it’s gentle on the dog’s skin. This should be done at least twice a week in order to get any knots out and prevent matting. You also have to wipe your dog’s beard every day to get rid of the dirt accrued from a day of eating and sniffing and getting into things.

Hand Stripping a Glen of Imaal for Show

A few times a year, a Glen of Imaal needs to be hand stripped and plucked in order to maintain the integrity of its coat and its appearance. Show dogs must be hand stripped and plucked, but if you don’t intend to show your dog and you aren’t as finicky about appearances then you can do a thorough cut and trim a few times a year in order to get roughly the same effect. If you’re uncertain about stripping your pet, then you can have a professional groomer do the stripping for you, but be certain that you specify what you want and that the groomer is versed in hand stripping and plucking otherwise you won’t get what you want.

Don’t Bath your Terrier to Often

Glen of Imaals should not be bathed more than once every few months because frequent bathing ruins the weatherproofing effect of the dog’s coat. When you do have to bathe your dog, be certain to use dog shampoo and rinse thoroughly as dried shampoo is an irritant. Finally, make sure to clip your dog’s nails routinely and check his ears for ear wax or other irritants so that his ears stay healthy. You also have to clip the hairs around his ears and bum too so that your dog can more easily stay clean.

Glen of Imaal terriers are very attractive dogs and you can keep this appearance by following a proper grooming routine. Both you and your dog will benefit from taking care of it, and we´re sure that your dog and you will enjoy the bonding time that a grooming creates!

The Miniature Schnauzers are a adorable breed, a small dog with a good temperament. However, grooming them can be tricky because of their double coat. But allthough the Miniature Schnauzers may not be and easy dog to groom, it´s well worth it...

Miniature Schnauzers are adorable small dogs with a good temperament. They are popular show dogs because of their coats and their banded or salt and pepper coloring. However, their coat makes them tricky to groom, especially for people new to the idea of grooming their dog. Miniature Schnauzers have a double coat; the outer layer is wiry and hard and the undercoat is softer. Furthermore, this breed of dog has a coat which, in order to maintain the correct appearance, requires a lot of combing, clipping and stripping in order to achieve the ideal appearance.

Miniature Schnauzers need to be both combed with a metal comb with very fine teeth and one with sharper teeth to comb both the overcoat and the undercoat. You’ll also want to use a brush and a slicker brush for daily brushing to keep your dog’s appearance looking nice every day, though certainly not show quality.

Miniature Schnauzers needs Carefull Clipping

The most important grooming needs of a Miniature Schnauzer though is the clipping aspect. Your Miniature Schnauzer has to be carefully clipped and if you intend to show your dog, you will have to hand strip and pluck your dog before the exhibition. You have to clip your dog starting at the skull and working against the grain of the coat. The lighter your touch is while clipping, the more hair will be left on your dog, so decide how long you want your dog’s coat to be beforehand. It’s also best to give your dog a quick wash before clipping; dirty hair is harder to cut than clean hair. It’s also easier to get rid of mats when the hair is wet. You also have to trim your dog’s beard and the fur around his paws routinely to prevent matting and keep the hair clean as these areas better attract dirt.

Professional Grooming

If you intend to put up your Miniature Schnauzer for show, then simply using electric clips will not be enough. Instead, you’ll have to use a stripping knife and plucking to get rid of longer hairs and make sure your dog’s coloring and appearance is perfect. This is a long process and one which requires a lot of practice, but when done properly, you’ll have a very nicely groomed dog. If you are nervous about doing this properly, then take your dog to a professional groomer to have the work done for you, but be certain that the groomer is able to do the job right otherwise you probably won’t get what you want.

Miniature Schnauzers may not be easy to groom, but it’s well worth it as they are handsome dogs and they are also friendly pets.

If you are looking for a all around reference book on grooming terriers, and dozens of other breeds. Then the "Ultimate Dog Grooming" book might be worth to check out. It features a good overview of dog bathing, cutting and much more. Read on for our review...

Ultimate Dog Grooming by Eileen Geeson is a great all around reference guide to grooming dozens of breeds of dogs and a good overview on many other things such as bathing, cutting, all different styles of coat cuts, diets for achieving a nice looking coat and a healthy dog to boot, as well as tons of illustrations. This book even includes information on how to become a groomer in your own rights so that you can even make some money from your enjoyment of dog care. This book is a general guide though; a textbook of sorts for basic dog grooming, care, and making money being a groomer. Do not expect tons of detail because the level of detail needed to make everyone happy would take an eternity to write and take hundreds and hundreds of pages. Instead what you’ll get is an excellent cross section of different breeds of dog and what kinds of cuts and grooming to do on them to achieve the ideal looks.

Also Covers Hand Stripping and Plucking

Ultimate Dog Grooming also focuses on hand stripping and plucking which is something which many other books are missing because they tend to focus more on clipping. However, if you want to achieve the traditional grooming appearance for a show, then knowing how to hand pluck and strip your dog is essential and this book becomes an important guide for people who want to work on their ability to do more plucking and stripping.

Good Allround Dog Grooming Guide

If you are looking for a good, all around guide to dog grooming and different coat cuts, then this book should have a special place in your library. It will easily and quickly pay for itself, especially since in wholesale places like Amazon you can find it for under twenty dollars. If you want to groom your own dog, then this is the book for you.

The Rat terrier is one of the easiest terrier to groom. This is mainly due to their small size and their short coat that is easy to care for. The Rat terriers are also friendly dogs, so grooming them isn’t too much of a chore since they tend to enjoy it...

Rat terriers are some of the easiest dogs to groom; they are small and their coats are short and easy to care for. Rat terriers are also friendly dogs, so grooming them isn’t too much of a chore since they tend to enjoy it.

Rat terriers have a very fine coat and it’s a single layer coat to boot with no extra hair or tufts to groom. They are very susceptible to the cold therefore, so many people dress their dogs, not to be cute, but simply to let them survive a cold day. Rat terriers are also clean dogs by nature, so they rarely roll in anything too gross which needs to be cleaned off. The coat of a rat terrier needs to only be brushed with a rubber brush or a stiff bristle brush very occasionally; generally it’s best to brush them after they have had a bath which means you’ll probably only be brushing your dog a couple of times a year. Overbathing and overgrooming can lead to skin problems such as mange, so unless the dog is filthy, it’s best to leave it alone.

Keeping the Rat Terriers Coat Healthy

Rat terriers are also susceptible to skin allergies from coat products such as colognes and many flea products, so if you want to maintain your dog’s glossy coat, you should talk to your vet about what to use and what not to use. Some people find that using a small amount of olive oil every once in a while is sufficient for keeping their dog’s coat healthy and glossy, but don’t use too much or the coat will become oily.

What should be done routinely is nail clippings so that your dog stays comfortable while walking around and you should check your dog’s ears for things like earwax and mites, especially if your pet spends a lot of time outside. You can also brush your dog’s teeth daily or at least every other day in order to remove tartar build up before it turns into plaque and worse problems.

Rat Terriers are Low Maintenance Dogs

Rat Terriers are extremely low maintenance dogs as far as grooming goes and this makes them very desirable as pets because you don’t have to spend a lot of time caring for their coats. In fact, it’s advisable to spend little time grooming because overgrooming can damage your dog’s skin and hair with ease. Rat terriers also prefer to be clean, so they’ll largely manage themselves.

If you are like us, and think that it is nice to have all Terrier Grooming resources at one place - You'll probably like this. We have now opened our "own" shop here on the site. It features all the grooming supplies that you and your dog might need...

Today we have launched a new section on Terrier Grooming. You’ll find a new item in the menu called Grooming Supplies. It probably talks quite well for it self about what it is – It´s our own little shop, where you can find all the tools that you could need when you are about to groom your beloved terrier!

Safe Grooming Shopping

The shop itself is powered by Amazon, so all the products are actually sold, shipped and handled by them. That means that they are handling the payments too, which is a big relief for us and at the same time way more secure and safe for you as a customer. We are still working on some layout related issues, but apart from some minor design glitches, the shop is fully functional.

We think, and we hope that you do so too, that it is nice to have all Terrier Grooming resources at one place – TerrierGrooming.com! This way we can offer all of our visitors a more complete service, without going through all the huge amount of administration of actually setting up a “real” shop with our own products. Atleast it is a good start, and who knows… Maybe some day we’ll actually start selling our own stuff!

So if you are in need of some new dog shampoo, grooming scissors or any other grooming products for you and your dog – Make sure that you check in our new shop!

Dog warts are caused by a viral infection which creates a pale colored bump with the texture of cauliflower. Although most warts go away on their own, they do cause discomfort to the dog, especially if they’re in the mouth or eyelids. Warts can also turn into malignant cancer growths, so it’s best to keep an eye on warts and seek treatment for dog warts if you’re worried that they are irritating your dog. The following is a small list of remedies for dog warts. Some are homeopathic, some are more chemical, but they can all be effective for your dog and it’s matter of experiment a little to find one that you and your dog like.

Treatments for Dog Warts

Castor Oil

Castor oil does seem to be the cure all for the homeopathic remedies. Castor oil, when applied directly to the wart, lessens its size and perhaps more importantly to the dog, decreases the itching. You can find castor oil at any drug store or some health food stores.

Vitamin E

Break open a capsule of pure vitamin E supplement, such as you might buy at a pharmacy. Then apply the liquid directly onto the wart two to three times a day. You should see improvement within a few weeks. Vitamin E strengthens the skin as well, making it more resistant to other viral attacks.

Cryosurgery

Cryosurgery isn’t as scary as it sounds. It involves freezing off the wart with liquid nitrogen. It’s completely safe and highly effective. The process utilizes a local anesthetic so that the dog doesn’t have to go to sleep and a coolant, usually liquid nitrogen, administered so the wart freezes, dies, and goes away after a time. Cryosurgery has to be done by a vet and can be expensive. It can also be nerve wracking for the dog, but the procedure itself is easy and painless.

Interferon

Interferon is a more extreme remedy for dog warts and should only be administered if the case is severe. Interferon is an oral remedy for warts which has antiviral properties and an immune stimulant. Interferon is very effective at getting rid of difficult warts, but it also carries a number of side effects including nausea and dizziness, which will be very uncomfortable for you dog. The drug has to also be administer orally which, as most dog owners can attest, is easier said than done.

The Best Treatment – Taking Good Care of your Dog!

The best way to deal with warts is to prevent them by taking good care of your dog’s skin and coat so that he can fight off the viruses which cause warts before they even enter his system. You can do this by making sure that your dog has a good diet of food with plenty of protein and vitamin E in it. You also want to make sure to brush your dog daily so that the oils in the dog’s coat are distributed evenly and dead skin flakes can be removed. Do not over bathe your dog as this will dry out your dog’s skin and make it more susceptible to viruses. Finally, always be vigilant to your dog’s health and keep an eye out for warts. Although most are benign and go away on their own, occasionally, they can turn into something much worse and the sooner you get to a vet, the better things will be for your pet.
