Which Survey on number of carrier bags used for online shopping

Tesco and Sainsburys have been criticised for sending too many carrier bags with their online grocery deliveries. A survey was done where 29 items were ordered from the big 5 supermarkets and then the number of bags used was counted.

Tesco sent some sausages, a bottle of washing up liquid and a pack of mince in separate bags which drew criticism, Sainsburys was mentioned for sending a multibag of 6 packets of crisps on its own in one bag.

Sainburys mentioned it was investigating the bag with the crisps and that it's drivers are trained to use minimal numbers of bags, they can also take back bags for reuse or recycling.

Tesco said it gives its customers the option to have online shopping delivered in crates which are taken back with the driver and that tests had shown it uses the least number of carrier bags in deliveries.

Don't forget to recycle your carrier bags and don't forget to use a Tesco Voucher Code when shopping!

There are a number of ways to easily save money during the economic downturn.

As food has become more expensive and is a necessity I'll list a few ideas about how you can reduce your weekly grocery bill. As well as saving money I'm also looking to save time.

If I can reduce an hour spent in the supermarket to less than a few minutes then that's an hour I can spend productively earning money.

This takes me to shopping online. If buying perishable goods (fruit/veg etc) then I like to see what I'm buying but each week I also buy other goods such as toiletries, tinned goods, cleaning products, frozen food. This usually means a 15 minute drive to the nearest supermarket, finding a parking space, taking a trolley around for 30 minutes, queuing at the checkout, packing the groceries, driving home.

I'm spending time, spending money on petrol etc. If you choose to shop online you can save time, save money and usually get vouchers for money off the shopping.

Tesco Online allows you to set up lists for regular items you buy so if say you buy the following each week: washing powder/bread/soup/toilet paper/ham/cheese/milk/tea/coffee You can havce these preset on your list. When you login to do a shop you can then just add or remove items as needed. Search online for money off, A quick check at http://tescovouchercodes.blogspot.com reveals a voucher code for £10 off when you spend £50.

So you get 20% off your shopping! Not only that but you get the groceries delivered to your door (for a small delivery fee). Keep an eye out for the codes offering extra clubcard points, you can now exchange clubcard points for 4 x the value for other products. A voucher code offering 500 points on a £50 shop will potentially give you a £20 voucher for the Theatre/Pizza Express and a number of other retailers.

Usually you can only use one voucher code when shopping online with Tesco so if you have a free delivery code it's worth checking to see if there are others which will give more savings.

Tesco Delivery ranges from £4 to £6 so a voucher code offering free delivery is not as beneficial as a £10 off a £50 shop.

Tesco have recently updated their clubcard reward scheme so you can now use your points to get double rewards by exchanging them for use instore.

You can still get double this by using the Tesco Partner Scheme where a £5.00 voucher is worth £20.00, but if you prefer to get goods at Tesco e.g. Tesco Direct or Tesco Wine then the in-store vouchers are a good option. There is no reason to be using your clubcard points for purchasing at the till when you can get double or quadruple the value!

Tesco to offer free delivery?

Waitrose have recently announced plans to scrap it's delivery charge which may trigger a price war between online supermarkets.

Tesco already offers occasional voucher codes for free delivery but will they respond to the move made by Waitrose and make this permanent?

I think probably not, for the time being anyway. Tesco already does some great deals for online shopping, the online coupons offering things like £5.00 off when you spend £50 or 750 free clubcard points when you spend £50 eat into the margins, to remove the delivery fee may stretch the margins too much or cause them to limit the number of online voucher codes they release.

Waitrose online run through Ocado is growing at 60% anually so the pressure is on those other supermarkets who offer online delivery to ensure they remain competitive. Sainsburys, Asda and Tesco are all cheaper than Waitrose but if you include the £10 off vouchers Ocado offers and free delivery some customers may consider switching.

Theatre

Tesco have a number of half price deals on Easter Eggs but these only last until the 30th of March so be quick!

Your best bet is to use a Tesco Voucher Code to get a discount whilst completing a normal shop and to include any Easter Eggs you want to buy for the kids/friends (and of course some for yourself!).

Pre-Pay Delivery at Tesco Online?

One of Tesco's main competitors Ocado has recently launched a pre-pay delivery where for a monthly fee you can receive groceries with free delivery.

Paying just £0.99 a month for the first 3 months (normally £8.99 a month) is this something that Tesco might follow? Ocado users are normally charged £5.95 for each delivery so if you are making more than one shop per month then this deal for Ocado users seems a good thing.

I know many Tesco shoppers who order two or more times a month so a Pre-Pay Delivery scheme for Tesco.com online shopping would prove a positive step, at the right price of course.

A minimum term would probably apply (12 months) and a minimum order amount is in for Ocado (£40.00) apart from at Christmas where it moves to a minimum of £90.00.

Tesco is slashing prices by 50% on a number of product lines concentrating on Christmas essentials.

Tesco’s commercial director, Richard Brasher, said the price cuts were in response to surveys it had done, which found that customers were reluctant to spend early on certain items in case they were later discounted.

He said: “Customers are telling us that they are delaying their main Christmas purchases as they wait for bargains. Some say that a bit of the pleasure they usually get from buying gifts has gone in the current climate.

“Our Half Price Sale reassures customers that we’re not making them wait. They’ve told us they still want to enjoy a special Christmas, with big presents for their children and a proper Christmas meal, but they want us to help make their money go further.”

1) Always use a voucher code when grocery shopping.

Many of you will have noticed that codes are expiring quicker than usual and there are not many valid codes at present (especially the extra clubcard point ones). Codes are being released but with limited usage so keep checking the site for new codes. I expect some Christmas codes to be released shortly.

The middle classes are now hunting for online vouchers as internet shopping expands

People’s online habits are changing as the credit crunch begins to bite. Hitwise, which monitors the internet habits of 8.4 million people in the UK, has discovered that increasingly people are using price comparison websites, downloading sales vouchers, looking for moneysaving tips and shopping at online budget stores.

Robin Goad, the director of research for Hitwise in the UK, said that there had been a trebling in the number of people searching online using terms containing the word “sales” this summer, compared with last year. Meanwhile, websites offering sales vouchers giving discounts at popular stores are the fastest-growing retail internet phenomenon. Since the first such websites appeared last September, they have gained in popularity. Mr Goad said: “People are now specifically going to a voucher site before they start their online shopping to see what vouchers are available.”

Online shopping is also rapidly changing, with budget supermarkets undergoing the fastest growth. Tesco remains the dominant force in the market, although growth has almost plateaued at 0.8 per cent in the past year. Hitwise figures showed that Aldi had grown by 235.6 per cent since 2005, Lidl by 119.5 per cent and Morrisons by 114.8 per cent. Morrisons has enjoyed the fastest growth of any online supermarket in the past year - 52.6 per cent.

Mr Goad said: “Aldi is growing very fast and is now the third-biggest online supermarket. It has been growing pretty significantly over the last three years. You do hear a lot of stories about hard-up middle-class people who are having to go to Aldi to buy their pickled peppers, or whatever, but actually the reason Aldi has grown online is because their core customer base is going there more.”

Fears for Nectar and Tesco Clubcard company

The company that has provided cards for the Nectar and Tesco Clubcard loyalty schemes was today set to collapse into administration after being hit by the credit crunch.

Tesco said that ID Data had merely supplied the supermarket with cards and did not run the loyalty scheme. Tesco added that ID Data was one of a number of companies to supply cards for the Clubcard scheme and that customer's loyalty points would not be affected.

ID Data is already the biggest supplier of smart cards to the UK Government.
