Better luck next year for the UE Warriors. The funny thing was they were 14-0 (win-loss) in the eliminations and then went down to 0-2 during the finals. They didn't even win a single game! It's utterly ridiculous. Talk about bad timing. Waaaayy bad.

And, congratulations, too to Mr. Pacquiao for winning over Marco Antonio Barrera in their rematch. And thank you Ms. Kyla for singing Lupang Hinirang right.

It was a great day for the Philippine sports yesterday. It was a heartbreaking loss yesterday for the UE Warriors when De La Salle University ended their 14-0 winning streak. UE lost by 1 point. One.

The thing with DLSU is, they win when it matters most. I hope that they'd finish UE come Sunday because I'm losing patience everytime I had to look for damn tickets. Everytime I thought I was early, I thought wrong. I mean, I think people start to line up as early as 5am and by releasing time, the line is several kilometers long. I am not that patient. I start to look for scalpers who wouldn't try to sell me tickets 10x its price. During the ADMU-DLSU game last week, my boss had no choice but to pay P700 for an upper B ticket. At first the scalper priced it at P1,500. I almost dropped dead. I was so tempted to sell my ticket, too. But it's fun watching the games live, damn it. The scalper looked like a DLSU student. Maybe he thought Levi (my boss) was from the Ateneo because he was wearing his blue cap and he wasn't wearing anything green.

P1,500 for a P70 ticket. Fran-frickin-tastic.

The Ateneo-La Salle rivalry proved to be very much alive last Sunday when 23,000+ fans trooped to Araneta Coliseum to witness the final battle between the two universities for a place in the UAAP Season 70 finals. A lot of people didn't get in because tickets were sold out even days before. I am not an Atenista, also not a Lasalista. So whichever team wins is really a non-issue. I have a lot of friends in Ateneo but I wanted DLSU to win more than ADMU. Not because of the school, but simply because they are the better team. They are good offensively and excellent defensively. It's funny because people were thinking I was rooting for Ateneo because it's just beside Miriam College. Since when did proximity become the basis for choosing what team to cheer for?

ALSO,

The Shakey's V-League is back!

I think almost all of our college friends were there (Mae's party). I didn't quite have a hard time making up my mind where to go. C'mon. Seeing Yamin in person and hearing him sing with his phenomenal voice (for free) was kind of a once in a lifetime experience. And I just don't feel like going home drunk that night. I lost count of how many times I've done that. Plus, my aunt gets paranoid everytime I'm still not in our house past 10pm. She doesn't get angry. She just starts asking questions. As much as I would love to give her peace of mind by patiently answering where I am or what I'm doing or who I'm with, I hate being bugged.

To Mae, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! Talking about Erap, I personally think that whether his trial was fair or unfair, he's still guilty of plunder. That fact is brighter than sunshine. So some people should stop whining about it and move on with their "clean" lifestyles.

ANYWAY.

Got together with some of my ex-classmates last weekend. It has been so long since we saw each other. It's nice to meet up once in a while and try to catch up with one another. I couldn't pass it up cause Ton was there. And she was even the one who texted me that there would be a mini reunion. She asked me through text if I was already on my way, which was weird because I didn't know about it until when she texted. We only see her once in a million days.

Inah, Czaira, Gareth, Nica, Ciends, and Krystle were also present. I wonder what these people see in me that they pick me, of all people, to answer. Again, I gave a second to think about it. And again, I gave the same answer: No one. Because either way is like a broken pencil - POINTLESS. Get it? There is just no point of being committed in a relationship when one of you is into it while the other is not. Life is short. So it is not advisable to focus your time and energy on someone who doesn't care, think, or even look at you the same way.

And when you pick the one who loves you but you don't love, doesn't the word SELFISH ring a bell? Why would you let his/her world revolve around you when you know for yourself that he/she deserves better? It's not cool to always leave someone hanging. In case you haven't noticed yet, people have feelings, they get hurt, and they have a life to live. Be considerate enough to spare them of the pain you will cause in the long run. Stop thinking that you're the only thing in this world worth paying attention to.

So there's my answer, friend - either both of you are on the same ride or it's not gonna happen. Easier said than done. But who said life is easy?

Around the globe. That means now it’s not just between US institutions like Harvard, Yale, Cambridge and Oxford. According to London’s Times Higher Education Supplement (THES), although the Western universities are still the clear winner with the US taking all the top 8 slots, the rankings are more diverse. No less than 30 countries are represented in the top 200. Unless US colleges keep reinventing themselves, they will lose their lead in the global game. Beijing University, the National University of Singapore and the University of Tokyo are all in the top 20.

Vanessa, a friend of mine from high school, is now studying in Japan. I think she is a scholar there or something to that effect. She’s very lucky to get a higher education in one of the most competitive countries in the world. You see, it’s not hard to envy her. Sometimes I wonder how it’s like to study in a global university, where facilities are the most modern, faculty is top notch, and the environment is most conducive to learning. Sadly, we don’t and I doubt if we will have - even in the next 100 years - universities like Harvard or Yale. Even in Asia alone, we are lagging behind our counterparts. And unless the government wakes up and makes education its number one priority, we’ll keep lagging behind. Today, other Asian countries are pouring resources to homegrown schools in a bid to prevent brain drain. China is planning to spend a portion of its annual GDP (that is higher than Europe’s or US’) on higher education. Earlier this year, Malaysia announced that by 2010, they will become an international education hub with 100,000 foreign students. India plans to create Vedanta University which they claim will raise standards throughout Asia with 100,000 students and 40,000 faculty.

If you remember, the most recent THES rankings showed that 4 institutions from the Philippines (University of the Philippines, La Salle, Ateneo and UST) made it to the top 300. Yes, it’s something to be proud of but it’s not something to be complacent with. While other Asian countries strive to have a cutting-edge global educational system, the Philippines is still yet to make education a top concern.

Of all places, I shouldn't be updating my blog here. And definitely not this time of the day.

What the heck, I'm itching to blog.

It's weird. When there's so much to do that's usually the time when I'm so eager to update. I mean, like right now I'm supposed to be doing something work-related rather than writing an entry here.

Danielle, my classmate back in college, and the only person from back then who I meet with consistently up to now, is bugging me to do their flyer. Apparently, Chinabank is going to make their HR people hand out flyers to get more applicants. From what I heard, that company favors or rather "prioritizes" certain colleges and universities. If you're not from one of the priority colleges/universities, forget it. Even if you graduated cum laude, forget it still. For them, the name of the school is the important thing. If I'm not mistaken, Priority 1 schools include, Ateneo (oh, should I put THE before "Ateneo"?), UP, and La Salle. Priority 2 are Mapua (specific courses), UST, the exclusive schools, etc. Other schools not mentioned, you know where you belong.

The system sucks. But admit it, if you own a company, wouldn't you like to get graduates from the top performing schools in the country? I would want that. But you know what, I know one big boss who's a former Atenean. I haven't been writing cause there really is a time when no matter how hard you think of something to write, or how bad you want to update, nothing comes out. All I could think of was how I'm gonna finish the work assigned to me. It was easy to do but there was so much of it. It's not that I'm complaining, though.

Anyway, I've decided to write about how you can download a Flash Video 'cause people are always asking me, and I don't get why they don't know. So, if you're addicted to video sites like YouTube and VEOH (I like this one better), and you were just born yesterday, fyi, you can download the videos through sites like Keepvid.com and Clipnabber.com. Just copy and paste the URL of the video, and then Save As with .flv as document type (example, weddingvideo.flv). You have to have an FLV player for you to open the file. Just google and download it. It's free over the internet. Now you get to watch your favorite videos even when your internet connection is down. Cool, huh?

I decided to post some pics here from our trip to Thailand. Together with my friends Daryl, Ria, and Rio, went to Bangkok and did nothing but to shop, shop, shop till we drop. We haven't had time to go to some bar and see a "live show" (ya know what i mean), though. I remember one of my officemates told me that when they went to one, a man told them that they could see the show for only 50 baht. Once they were ushered in and seated, 500 baht was demanded from them. They didn't try to reason back coz the way the bouncer was looking at them was just not right. After being robbed, I mean paying, they were out of there.

Anyway, good thing that didn't happen to us. In our experience, Thai people were really nice. One drawback though is that they couldn't speak nor write grammatically correct English. But that's okay, at least we were able to understand each other, especially when bargaining. Nyahahah! Food and shopping are cheap so you'll have a blast there. And the airport... man, NAIA looked like it's from a 5th world country. There are airports much worse than NAIA but the one in Bangkok was beyond cool.

paying respect

the best for my skin

nice. very nice.

hmm, i might buy this mall one day

with ria at siam paragon

kahit tindera nakaayos

The fact that in less than 24 hours I'd be able to read the final installment of the epic tale just wouldn't allow sleep to creep in. And when July 21 finally came, I had the book in my hands as early as 8am. The malls usually open at 10am, but in that particular day, bookstores were open as early as 7 to join the world in celebration of the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book of the Harry Potter series. Within two days, I'm done reading.

To our relief, most of the spoilers which surfaced before the release of the book turned out to be wrong. But it's true that some copies went on sale at New York even before July 21. A review of Michiko Kakutani published July 18, 2007 surfaced. It didn't mention spoilers, but still. I wish I were in New York during that time. Haha.

I hope that you did a little review on what transpired during the last 6 books because things, locations, and characters will resurface to play very significant parts. This will give you a feel that the the series is a one woven story and not independent installments.

Questions were finally given answers and satisfyingly so in this final installment. We finally know who RAB was (though I think it was pretty obvious), who died, if Snape really is a traitor, etc. And of course, will Harry be the one left standing at the very end? We will also learn more of Dumbledore's character, through his past, that would tell us that he was not as perfect as we thought he was. As for Snape, I knew it all along that there was a redemptive pattern on his character. I knew it! And for all of you who haven't read the book, he ended up a hero. One major spoiler! Hah! Haha. Sorry, I couldn't help it.

Now I can sleep soundly after two painful years of waiting. It's a little sad, though. No more Harry Potter books to look forward to. I started reading it 8 years ago. I can't believe it has been that long.

Saw it!

I saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix on its first day of showing here in the Philippines. That's quite a feat for me. I usually am the last person to watch a movie after it has been shown for, like, weeks already. Anyway I watched it at Robinsons Galleria and when I was about to enter the cinema I saw, in full glory of their yellowish-colored uniforms, about 20 highschool Povedans queuing up at the door. I hesitated and checked my ticket. Yes, it's Cinema 3. Correct. So I watched the movie with about 4 rows of Povedans behind me. Simultaneous "eeeewwwww"s and "aawwww"s and "nooooo!"s (when Harry kissed Cho Chang), tormented me. Unfortunately they're the kids who love to mix English and Tagalog in one sentence. The kind of Taglish that usually gives me mental cramps.

Ok enough with them. The movie was good. You wouldn't go "OH MY GOD THAT WAS THE GREATEST MOVIE! EVER!" after watching it, but you can't deny it was good. Harry and Cho's relationship was close to nonexistent which is fine with me. I never liked Katie Leung as Cho Chang, anyway. Now there's nothing we can do about the movie's casting so it was good that they didn't play-up their romance.

I can't wait to read the final book! As we wait, go check the movie out. But first, look below. There was no reason for her to leave. Zilch. Nada. Why would she resign? What is she, crazy? Well, guess what. I smirked when my officemate finally had the gut to tell her boss she's leaving by the end of June. I was there. I even printed her resignation letter and I saw how her boss' face distorted when she blurted it out. There was no effing way he could have seen it coming. And that is what makes the whole thing sooo funny. Suddenly, the world reminded him that it doesn't revolve around him. That people could actually turn their back on him, just like that. Because there's a lot of better things in this life worth paying attention to.

She started working for the company the same day as I did. So she was my companion since day one. I told her I don't want her to go but I won't advice her not to. I really think she's better off away from you-know-who. But the setback is that I'm not accustomed to dealing with change that easy. That's why I try not to need anything from anybody. Life's easier that way.

Shakey's V-League.

The 2007 first conference of the Shakey's V-League has been recently concluded. UST Tigresses were champion. Last year, I blogged about it almost on every entry. I even went to the venue (Ateneo gym at that time, now they did it at The Arena in San Juan) to see the games live. I rooted for San Sebastian College and every team which faced La Salle. UST didn't play last year, the reason why DLSU won the championship. I was so sure about that and I still am. Proof? UST was back this season and DLSU didn't even reach the finals.

I remember posting a review written by Jessica Zafra on my then Friendster blog. (I used to maintain a blog on Friendster, but now it only consists of links to this site). Again I’m blogging about it because I’ve decided to read it for the second time after I got it back from Andrea. She borrowed it months ago but she wasn’t able to read it. I doubt if she even bothered to lift a page. That’s a shame. The book is worth reading at least once. It’s a mortal sin to pass up.

Yes, it’s that good.

I remember when I finally finished the last page. I remained staring at blank space, motionless, as though hypnotized. It felt like I’ve been deeply involved with the tragedy of the Lisbon girls. I was one with the boys’ frustration of not being able to answer the questions they were seeking answers for. I was with them as they eternally peer through their windows, watching the girls’ every move and looking for evidences that they still exist beyond their confinement. Holding treasure every note, signal, and gesture that the girls directed towards them before they began killing themselves.

The Virgin Suicides is one of the most compelling books I’ve read in recent years. Both wickedly funny and elegiac. I love the tone and how the author presented his allegories. He presents us with a grief, so elegantly written you wouldn’t mind being intoxicated with it.

I have heard before that a movie was made out of this book and had Kirsten Dunst play as one of the girls. Unfortunately, though it was written and directed by Academy winner Sofia Coppola, it wasn’t as brilliant as the book. Still, I would want to see a copy.

Yes, that's true. And we knew that 2 days ago.
This is the end of the not yet published (someone could call that 0day) book
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows .
At the end of the story Hagrid was killed by Snape in the attempt of ambush Hermione and Ron. Ron and Hermione flees in privet drive but Voldermort, surprising them, engaged a magical duel with Ron and Hermione.
Voldemort attacked trough the imperius curse and Hermione, to protect the life of Ron fight hardly for more than 6 pages and then finally die. (boring, very boring... it's always the same story!)
Then, to make a long story short, Harry came up, killed all the bad guys and Hogwarts against became a good place to stay and have fun.
Ah, i missed one important information about Draco Malfoy, he started to create Horcrux (for fun and profit!). The end. ************************************************************
Yes, we did it. We did it by following the precious words of the great Pope Benedict XVI when he still was Cardinal Josepth Ratzinger. He explained why Harry Potter bring the youngs of our earth to Neo Paganism faith.
So we make this spoiler to make reading of the upcoming book useless and boring.
The attack strategy was the easiest one. The usual milw0rm downloaded exploit delivered by email/click-on-the-link/open-browser/click-on-this-animated-icon/back-connect to some employee of Bloomsbury Publishing, the company that's behind the Harry crap.
It's amazing to see how much people inside the company have copies and drafts of this book. Curiosity killed the cat.
Who kill curiosity?
To protect you and your families
God bless you
Gabriel

Before going there Jaypee decided to make us libre at Pier One (which means buckets of beers) that made me drunk for unknown reasons. I never get drunk over beers (San Mig Lights? C’mon!). Anyway, I was puking in a CR cubicle before I even knew I was in one.

Brenda, Moi, Andrea (http://tessapics.multiply.com)

Since my house is quite far from Manila, I slept over at Brenda's house. I bet she offered because she was afraid of sleeping alone in her house since her companion was in Subic or something like that. I don't think she offered me to sleep over just because. She's not that nice. haha. I was awake at around 5 am and I thought I'd be gone from there first thing in the morning, but Madame Brenda was snoozing away. When she finally woke up ofcourse, taking her time, she cooked food... and then she ate them... then she took a bath... then we waited for her sister... then watched TV... then cooked food again... then ate again... then she packed her things for Subic... which I don't know why she didn't do WHILE we were waiting for her sister. I got home around 3:30 pm. By that time I was so feeling filthy I needed to get a shower. Plus it was so effing humid.
---

May I just say that Ugly Betty was disappointing? After seeing an episode for the first time, I feel happy that I didn't waste my money to buy even a pirated copy. Ugly Betty is the US version of Betty La Fea, which became a huge hit in several countries especially the Spanish-speaking ones. Letty La Mas Fea, another adaptation, I think was or is still being shown here.

I am confused. Is Ugly Betty a comedy? Because if it is, the punch lines and supposedly "comedic" scenarios just doesn't work. Sometimes you feel like they're pushing too hard to make it funny, but it's still corny. It's Devil Wears Prada gone bad. Really, really bad. I also don't get Betty Suarez's character. I mean, she doesn't talk weird, she doesn't act weird, and she doesn't think weird. So why does she look weird? You feel like everything about her is right except her looks. She's being characterized as very bright, smart, and full of potential. If her brain seems to be working so well, even better than her boss' sometimes, why can't she figure out that she looks so wrong? And she works as an assistant to the Editor-in-Chief of a fashion magazine!

Tell me where the logic is. It was sunny and bright alright. We toured Puerto Princesa City on the first day, went to the Underground River on the second, and on the third day we were at Honda Bay to go island hopping and snorkeling in 30 feet deep water. We would have wanted Pamalican Island (a.k.a. Amanpulo) since it's just somewhere there but as we all know, spending 3 days on that island means your P100,000.00 wouldn't suffice. Maybe next time. I'll find the owner first, marry him, make sure he makes a will and testament that says I'm his sole heir, then kill him. Of course.

You can see the rest of the pictures here: http://tessapics.multiply.com/

Nah, we did bag the Miss Photogenic award yet again at the recently concluded Miss Universe pageant over at Mexico City. Wow. Talk about Filipinos' voting prowess. It's not a bad thing. Nope. Any of the girls who lost would have willingly traded places with Ana Theresa so at least they could have brought something home. But winning that award for 3, get that, 3 straight years is kinda starting to freak me out.

Miss Japan won the title and yes, our candidate could have given a much much better answer had she got in the final 5, but hey, there were 77 of them! All drop-dead gorgeous! (Except for Miss China, though) Needless to say, the competition must have been really hard. And Licaros' presence (her official Ms. Universe photo was pretty) doesn't really have that extra WOW factor.

Don't fret, people. There's still Miss World (even more prestigious that Miss Universe) and if you're interested enough for it, because I'm quite not, watch out for Miss International.

----

I caught this cool reality show called On the Lot on Star Movies (Wed 9pm and Thurs 10:30pm). It's the search for the next big filmmaker. Some contestants are unbelievably talented. Check it out.

I myself haven’t seen DMC and 80% of ATE I didn’t know what’s going on. It was pleasurable seeing Johnny Depp and Kiera Knightly was still gorgeous to look at even in filthy pirate clothing, but I didn’t friggin’ understand the movie. And Calypso’s accent was giving me a headache. It didn’t help that it was almost 3 hours long. Well it was my fault though, missing a big chunk of the storyline. Now it’s all just a blur, except the part when William Turner became the new captain of the Flying Dutchman. Oops.

I just have to mention that my college friend Cris almost made my jaw drop to the floor when she came in Starbucks wearing a dress. Yup, it was a pweetee little dress she wore last night. (She met with us, with her colleagues, at Eastwood after we saw Pirates). I was like, what the-? The thing with Cris is she’s always in T-shirts and pants. She did mention before that she has dresses but I never saw her actually wear them. And I reckoned there has to be a very good reason before you can make her wear one. But last night! Hahahah! Seeing her in a dress was such an experience.

How are you people? Today's gonna be the American Idol 6 Finals and of course, the best contestant of the season won't be there. But let's still go and see who between Jordin and Blake will win it. I mean, whoever wins, he/she's still better than the grey-haired dude who won last year (I swear I forgot his name). It's not to say that America's right for kicking out Melinda but they were so wrong last season. Had they voted Sanjaya to be in the finals this year though... Haha! It would have been the end of American Idol. Sanjaya would be great singing Indian songs because you won't hear the difference between two male singers, for example. They all sound the same. He should try it and stick with it.

Now this is turning out to be one of the worst posts I've ever written. I even sound drunk. So I'm gonna stop right now.
