After the Christmas parties, holiday events, yahtzee games until midnight, shopping, and reunions with high school friends, I am back with new wishes and resolutions for 2009. I have high hopes that great things will happen this year.

The onset of the new year is my chance to start anew and reflect on the things I want to change and do in my life. One of the things that I want to do this year is to fulfill my resolutions: live a healthier life, try a new activity, visit a new place or learn a new skill every month, and be a better employee and colleague. Happy new year everyone!

With just one more day to go before the much-anticipated Christmas, people in the office are so anxious to go home... so am I. As much as I wanted to leave the office earlier to avoid the heavy traffic, there are still things that I need to do. I need to finish all the tasks so I don't have to face them next year.

As soon as I finish these tasks, I am off to a long vacation that will surely be filled with fun, gifts, food, and excitement. Merry Christmas everyone!

Things I Look Forward To this Season

I wasn't able to post a new entry these past few days since I have been busy attending Christmas parties and events, as well as buying gifts for family and friends.

There's a lot to look forward to this Christmas season. One of them is the long vacation - no work for almost two weeks! We can all have a much-deserved break from the busy and sometimes chaotic working days. I am also looking forward to the reunions with relatives and high school friends. Lastly, the food! I love the dishes my mom and aunts make during Christmas. I sometimes wish they cook those dishes as often as possible. But then again, Christmas will lose some of its charm if I can eat those delicious creations whenever I like. What I need to bear in mind is to avoid overeating during this season (good luck with that).

How about you? What are the things or events that you look forward to at this time of the year?

Scoring Combinations

In yahtzee, the goal is to roll the dice in order to make certain combinations. Each combination has a corresponding point value. Here are the different scoring combinations in yahtzee:

• Three of a Kind – three dice are showing the same value; your score will be the total of all dice
• Four of a Kind – four dice are showing the same value; your score will be the total of all dice
• Full house – three dice are showing the same value, and two dice are showing the same value; your score is 25
• Small straight – four dice of consecutive values; your score is 30
• Large straight – five dice of consecutive values; your score is 40
• Yahtzee – five dice are showing the same value; your score is 50
• Chance – any combination; your score will be the total of all dice

Weekend Plans

Did you notice how much I love weekends? I always look forward to those two consecutive days of family bonding, talking to friends, and pure bliss. My weekdays are solely intended for work so I really make sure to do things for myself during weekends.

Aside from the usual movie marathon and yahtzee before dinner, I intend to go out more and do some exercises. My cousins and I will take a walk and ride our bikes to stretch those muscles. We will surely have fun, plus the exercises will keep us healthy. It's a win-win situation.

Christmas Shopping

It is almost Christmas! I can already see and feel the unmistakable signs of the Christmas season: night markets, very crowded shopping malls and extended mall hours, cool breeze, and a long list of family events and reunions. I still have to buy a lot of gifts for my cousins, family, and friends. I know it will be a difficult task at this time of the year since almost everybody will be doing the same thing. The malls will surely be jampacked with shoppers, but I don't mind. It has become part of my Christmas season. How about you? Are you done with your Christmas shopping?

Yahtzee in the Family

I realized last weekend just how yahtzee affects my family. My cousin showed us her work for her "show and tell" class. On one of the papers, she drew a group of people, playing with dice in the living room.

Yahtzee is indeed part of our weekend routine. We play it for fun, but beyond that, it actually brings us closer to each other. It's a bonding experience that we always look forward to every weekend.

As if last week's yahtzee competition wasn't enough, my cousins decided to spend the weekend at our house and have another round of yahtzee - just for fun.

It's not only for the young ones. Some of my uncles are also playing yahtzee during their siesta. For some, it keeps their minds off of their hectic and usually chaotic world at work, while others just want to be entertained. This dice game is one of those things that can really bring the family and relatives together. After playing yahtzee, we'll all go to the living room to watch a lot of movies, another favorite family pastime. Have a nice weekend!

In Need of Exercise and Healthy Diet

I recently found this online test that will help determine your biological age and see if you are younger or older than your actual age. I took the (relatively long) test and the result shows that my biological age is slightly higher (+0.9) than my actual age. Here are the reasons why:

- I don't spend enough time on exercise. I walk each day for about three minutes and obviously, it's not enough.

- Lack of food variety. I should eat different kinds of fruits and vegetables everyday. While I try to limit my meat consumption to 2-3 servings per week, it is advisable for me to eat only one serving of meat per week.

Here's my plan: I will walk or run at least twice a week and eat fruits and vegetables on a daily basis. Let's see what my biological age is after three months.

I had fun in my cousin's birthday celebration last weekend, with the yahtzee competition as its highlight. Since we all love to play yahtzee, everyone was excited when my cousins started the game. In the end, the big winner was my 16-year old cousin. He defeated four other players. The prize? A brand new yahtzee handheld game device. What a lucky guy!

I am so excited! Tomorrow will be the birthday celebration of my dear cousin. I am also looking forward to that yahtzee contest. I wonder if my cousin will be able to defeat my other cousin who is very serious about this competition - he has been playing yahtzee online since Monday to "prepare".

I still do not have a birthday gift. I will probably just bake his favorite cake, or head to the mall tonight and pick something nice for him. That would be lovely. Tomorrow's event will surely be a blast. Happy weekend everyone!

Not-so-good Thursday

I do not feel so good today. This is the result of not having enough sleep and having to deal with a very annoying colleague. I am a firm believer of the wonders of the eight-hours-of-sleep-a-day that my mother usually tells me, so I always go to bed early. However, I often wake up several times before dawn so when it's time to wake up, I feel like I haven't slept at all.

I can deal with my sleep problem, but when it comes to my officemate who never fails to irritate me on my waking hours, I really cannot do anything about it. I guess I just have to concentrate on my work and ignore her. I hope tomorrow will be a good day for me.

Yahtzee Game on my Cousin's Birthday Party

My cousin will be celebrating his 15th birthday this weekend and since most of his cousins are yahtzee players, he decided to hold a mini yahtzee competition on Saturday night. I play yahtzee but I am not very good at it so I think I will just watch as my cousins battle it out for a prize which will be given by my aunt. She is very generous so everyone's curious about what the winner will be receiving after the competition.

I still don't have a birthday gift for my cousin. I know he wants this handheld yahtzee game device but unfortunately I don't have enough money for that. Besides, if I have enough cash, I would buy that electronic game device for myself. Haha! I guess I just have to ask his mother or brother for gift ideas.

As different versions emerge and more and more people get hooked on yahtzee, rules of the game have been modified and house rules were invented by a lot of enthusiasts. Here are the basic rules every yahtzee player should know:

• Roll the five dice and score in any of the 13 categories. You need to score once in each category.

• Roll any of the dice again to score. You can roll the dice three times.

America has spoken. After about two years of campaigning all over United States, Democrat Obama defeated Republican McCain in what is considered a very momentous event in the history of America. Obama is the first black US President, and everyone will be watching his every move.

Americans who became part of the presidential election felt a sense of history as they voted for the candidate who would bring the much-needed change in the nation. Even other countries posed interest on who would be the next president. We'll just have to do our part as responsible citizens and see if Obama is the leader the nation is waiting for.

History records show that during the ancient times, dice were used as magical implements and divination tools to make predictions.

Before the emergence of the six-sided dice that we are familiar with nowadays, people in the ancient times used pebbles, stones, and sticks when playing games. Ankle bones or knuckle bones of hoofed animals were later used both in games and fortune-telling. Other materials such as wood and ivory were used to make dice.

There are dice variations which are not cubical in shape. Tetrahedron, octahedron, and dodecahedron are some of them.

I've read somewhere that in order to have a good life, you need to find a balance between work and leisure. It is said that those who take holidays are likely to be more productive and efficient at work than those who don't. I couldn't agree more. After five consecutive days of being deskbound, it's so much fun to "reward" yourself by having a drink or two with your friends or simply doing your favorite hobby. As they say, "work hard and play hard". In my case, I stay motivated when there is something to look forward to at the end of the working week. Unwind... take it easy. Find time for yourself and the people who matter in your life - it will be good for you.
