Hours after giving early approval to an ordinance making it easier to remove homeless people from the library, the City Council appointed members to a committee charged with finding longer-term solutions.

Many members, like the council’s pool of applicants, hailed from South Lubbock, but there are members from across the city. Chairwoman Lynn McClendon, appointed by Mayor Tom Martin, serves on the board of the Salvation Army.

The previous council voted down the idea of the committee last spring, but Central Lubbock Councilman Todd Klein brought the concept back this fall.

Gateway To Hope, formerly Smith County Coalition for the Homeless, helped organize the 3rd annual One Night Without a Home event at The Salvation Army.

The goal was to get people as close as possible to feeling what it is like to be homeless and to raise awareness of how a portion of the East Texas community lives. Because of the weather, the plan to sleep at Bergfeld Park was rearranged to The Salvation Army gym.
