Why We Chose International Adoption

Last week I had a "conversation" about international adoption through Facebook thread. I hesitate to even call it a conversation because I felt as if the statements made by the other person were rash, hurtful, and judgmental. The statements generalized international adoption as a whole in an extremely negative light.

Boy oh boy, did those comments get to me. And honestly, the night after this "conversation" occurred, I considered rehashing the things that were said and my argument against them right here on my blog. But now, after advice from a friend and prayer, I've realized attacks against a person (or persons) often come from people who lack understanding of the situation.

In this situation the attack came against people who choose to adopt internationally instead of domestically. And maybe, just maybe, that attack came from a lack of understanding. And I thought that maybe some of you, although you have all been nothing but kind and supportive, might have the same questions.

So today, I'll be sharing the reasons why we decided to adopt internationally AND why it's 100% okay with me that not everyone is called to that road.

NUMBER ONE: We chose international adoption because we feel called to it. I know that feeling "called" is probably an overused Christian term, but I'm not sure how else to describe it. This decision was not made rashly. It was bathed in prayer, planning, and discussion. I believe that God calls each of us to different places, different ministries and this is ours. Right now, in this point of our lives, this is our call.

During the Facebook conversation that I mentioned up above, someone kindly and innocently asked why people choose to adopt internationally besides feeling "called," and I won't deny that I began to wonder that maybe my number one reason wasn't "enough" of an answer. I don't think that's what the questioner was implying but still I found myself feeling unsure.

But after some prayer, I realized how silly that is. We don't question pastors when they feel called to the ministry or college students who feel lead to work in the mission field during the summer. Adoption in general is just as much of a calling. In my book, feeling God's call on your life to adopt a child is plenty of reason to move forward.

NUMBER TWO: We chose international adoption because we saw a need and we were able to step up and meet it. The country we are adopting from has been torn apart by the several civil wars they have experienced in the past decade. An average of 50,000 people die each month from war, murder, and even cannibalism; but, people also die from simple illnesses such as diarrhea. Half of the 50,000 that die each month are children. Orphanages are overcrowded and receive little to no support from the government. Most children eat one meal a day and that meal is cooked over an outdoor fire. This is the need we saw and when we heard about it, we felt like there was no way we couldn't answer.

I don't share those statistics to guilt or persuade anyone to adopt internationally, but those statistics are there. I also don't share those statistics to say that children in orphanages in the United States don't also have struggles and difficulties. I know that they also suffer from sicknesses, disabilities, disease, torn apart families, loneliness, depression, etc. and I do not discount that, I have not forgotten that or them. I pray that someday God will also lead us to meet the need of orphans here in the states through adoption.

NUMBER THREE: Last and probably the least important reason that we chose international adoption at this time is because of some of the uncertainties of laws here in the US (e.g. birth mother changing her mind, biological family found for foster to adopt child, etc.). I am fully aware that people could consider that being a cowardly reason to choose international adoption; and while it wasn't the only factor, it was a factor. I will openly admit that when stepping out to adopt, there were some fears I just didn't want to address. Although, international adoption comes with a whole slew of other fears and concerns. I know and have seen people experience the loss of a child after a birth mother changes her mind and I just didn't want to deal with that risk at this time. Selfish? Maybe. Honest? Completely.

People have also asked why we didn't consider becoming foster parents for a child or children. Honestly, I love the idea of fostering and Cody and I have discussed it before. But at this time, with Gunner being so young, I don't like to idea of kids possibly being moved in and out of our house. I want his environment to be as consistent and steady as I can keep it. Just a personal preference. I definitely think Cody and I would consider fostering when our children are older.

I know that our reasons to adopt internationally might be different than the reasoning for other people, and I'm okay with that. I also know that some people aren't called to international adoption or adoption in general, and I'm okay with that too. This is our specific journey, our specific story, our specific calling. What I really hope for is a Christian community that can support all adoptions and all types of orphan care. James 1:27 says that all Christians are called to take care of the orphans in some way; whether that be through adoption, foster care, summer mission trips, volunteering in programs, etc. We all play a part and each part is important. I hope we can stop arguing over continent and country boundaries and start loving and supporting each other. That is the only way we'll make a difference in this orphan crisis.

A Day Full Of Fire Trucks

Wednesday morning we spent most of our morning playing with toy fire trucks on mine and Cody's bed, and then that afternoon we visited Dad for several hours at the fire station. I'm pretty sure it was every little boy's dream day.

We have no big plans for this weekend, just a graduation party and our typical Sunday of church and small group. I imagine I'll start making the epic cleaning list to get ready for our home study.

One Step Closer

We've officially scheduled our home study for May 28th. The fact that that's less than two weeks away is pretty crazy to me. You probably shouldn't count on hearing from me very much by the end of next week...I've got a lot of deep cleaning to do.

With the step of our home study being done, that means we're getting so close to being introduced to the sweet little guy that will become or son. The referral process for our agency and the country we are adopting from is 2-4 months. And once we've accepted our referral? Well, honestly, we've got a HUGE payment to make and a lot of waiting to do.

It has been amazing to watch God meet every need and every payment in time for us to pay it. Once the craziness of the home study is over, I hope to write a post on how He has moved in our finances thus far. But guys, this next one coming up after the completion of our home study and referral...it scares me, for real. I am doing my best to put all of my faith in Him, but also putting my own feet to the ground and working for this.

Replacing The Radical With What Is Comfortable

Today, Carrie of Waiting With Joy will be sharing her heart on generosity...and not just generosity in regards to money. It's funny that I've been feeling a push from the Lord to be more generous in many areas of my life and here He is speaking to Carrie about the same things. It was so refreshing to hear her heart on the matter too.

I am one of those people you'd categorize as frugal. Cheap. ~~Maybe even a tight-wad.~~ I adore the teachings of Dave Ramsey and I look for ways to save money. You might even say I find some of my security in having money available. I am not talking SUPER WEALTH or anything. But just knowing I have something in case I need it, that gives me peace. And for many years this has brought me ~~guilt~~ (okay, the Holy Spirit has convicted me).

My husband is quite the opposite of me. He loves to give gifts to others and bless others in monetary (and non-monetary) means. I have always wished I could give that freely without feeling scared or worried that we might need that money down the road.

Then this past Sunday, my church began a series entitled Content in All Things. My worship pastor, Brian, spoke last week, and shared the story of the rich young ruler from Matthew 19 --

Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”But when the young man heard this, he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is very hard for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.I’ll say it again—it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God!” -- Matthew 19: 21-24

Immediately, I became convicted again because I knew God has been working on me to surrender this area of my life to him. I have certainly come a long way. But this continues to be an area of dis-trust for me. In his message, Brian argued that one of the major issues facing Christians in the West is that we may be missing the mark in the area of generosity. He discussed how in the U.S. we value the idea of scarcity and attaining more things to equal ones worth as a person rather than being generous with others.

{A favorite quote recently from Ann Voskamp.}

However, I don't think this missing the mark with generosity necessarily means monetarily/material things only. We may be missing the mark if we hoard our money, for sure. But what about not being generous with our time? Our giftings? Our knowledge & wisdom? Jesus asks us to forsake ourselves and live fearlessly for His glory. This means forsaking our agenda, our plans, our 401k plans, our savings accounts, our to-do lists, and yes....even our lives. And it is SCARY. It requires major TRUST because it involves great risk in the eyes of man.

One of the resources Brian mentioned in his message last week was the book Radical by David Platt. I have had the opportunity to read it, and it shook me to the core. David Platt does an excellent job of analyzing some of the issues/problems with the lack of generosity, lack of missional mindedness, lack of discipleship and community building happening in the current American church today:

"This is really the core issue of it all. Do we trust him? Do we trust Jesus when he tells us to give radically for the sake of the poor? Do we trust him to provide for us when we begin using the resources he has given us to provide for others? Do we trust him to know what is best for our lives, our families, and our financial futures?" -- David Platt, Radical

Ultimately, Jesus was communicating to this man [rich young ruler] that there was nothing he could do to enter the kingdom of God apart from total trust in God. It is impossible for us to earn our way into heaven. In the process, though, Jesus was exposing the barrier that this man’s wealth was to seeing his need for God. His wealth on earth would ultimately keep him from eternal treasure. -- David Platt, Radical

So, what do you think? Personally, I don't think Jesus is calling everyone to sell everything they own and move into poor neighborhoods. I think Jesus is asking believers to lay down their choke-hold on their stuff and surrender fully to Him. This may mean you go through times of plenty or times of dire need. In both circumstances, give thanks and fully trust/surrender to Him. Allow Christ to lead you. And may you be encouraged by Paul's account of the matter in Philippians 4 -

"Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little." -- Philippians 4:11-12

Please take a listen to the sermons mentioned above. Listen to the one by Brian Wages first, then to Jeff Henderson's second. In addition, take a listen to the song "Rich Young Ruler" by Derek Webb. It puts to song the message behind the story in Matthew 19. Extremely convicting but necessary for our growth as Christians.

Ephesians 1:4-6 // Adoption Print Fundraiser

Today, I'm sharing a project that is very special to me.

Last month Amanda of Buhbay Prints and I began chatting about a custom print I wanted to have made. I had an idea based off of a piece of art I'd seen on Pinterest and I was so excited when Amanda not only agreed to create the print I'd been envisioning, but also offered to sell it in her shop for two months (May and June) and donate 50% of each print purchased to our adoption funds.

I received my print two weeks ago and I can't wait to hang it in our little guy's room.

The verse on the print is Ephesians 1:4-6 and it reads...
"For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with His pleasure and will -- to the praise of His glorious grace, which He has freely given us in the One He loves."

If you or someone you know has adopted a child, is currently adopting, or has a heart for adoption this print is perfect for them. You can find the print in the Adoption Art Prints section of the shop.

You can choose from several different continents and move the heart to country/region of your choice. You can also choose the color of the font and if you want a plain grey or the chevron background. Wishing You Sunshine and Toy Trucks

Today I celebrate my second Mother's Day. Sometimes I still find it hard to believe that I'm actually a momma and that hopefully by this time next year, I will be a momma of two! Whoa.

If you're a mother, I hope you're spending your day relaxing with all of your loved ones...maybe enjoying a good meal cooked by someone else besides you! We celebrated on Friday with donuts for breakfast and then Cody and I went out for lunch and to see The Great Gatsby. Today we plan to go to church and spend lots of time with family. On Saturday, Gunner came down with his first ear infection since having his tubes put in, so I'm sure we'll be taking it easy too.

I do want to send special prayers and love to all of my friends that find Mother's Day to be a struggle...whether it be because you've lost your mother, you're waiting for babies of your own, or you're mourning the loss of a baby in heaven...whatever the reason is...I see you. I hear you. I know you. And I am so very sorry.

Times Of Waiting

Today, if I'm being 100% honest, I'm letting the worry and anxiety take me over.

Here's the thing about international adoption...you're dealing with another country, a different government. And tomorrow, if they wanted, the country we are adopting from (read why we aren't sharing the name of the country, here) could close their doors to international adoption. And they wouldn't be entirely wrong to do that. That is their right.

I guess I always knew that that was a possibility, but trying to accept that truth is hard. Right now we know that the country we are adopting from is considering making some changes in their current standards. There's no telling if the changes could affect us or if we'll be "grandfathered" in if changes do occur. I'm thankful for our agency who has been so open and informative about these changes even when it causes concern.

Plain and simple...it's nerve wracking. It's nerve racking knowing that a country's government could choose to change everything. Change your plans. Change the future of your adoption. Change your hopes. Change your dreams. It's a truth you have to accept when it comes to international adoption. It's a risky process.

Some days I feel like I have accepted that truth. I feel confident and assured. And days like today, I find myself curled up on the couch, worrying while Gunner naps in the next room.

I always thought that people wanted the adoption process to go quickly because they wanted their child home as soon as possible; and, of course, that's true, but I also find myself wanting it to pass quickly enough that there isn't time for standards and rules to change. That's where I am today, folks. I know that isn't happy or positive, but it's real.

I'm thankful that the Lord is reminding me that he has always, always blessed me and been faithful during times of waiting so I'm clinging to that truth. And, I'm reciting this familiar verse over and over in my head, trying to imprint it on my worrisome heart...

"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil,

to give you a future and a hope." -- JEREMIAH 29:11

Bookshelves & Puppies {A Giveaway}

A month of so ago we put in rain gutter bookshelves in Gunner's playroom. They are mounted on the wall so they take up zero floor space, which I love. Plus, they've kept books off of the floor (Gunner's favorite place to dump things) but the lower shelves are still easily reached by his little hands.

I didn't take any photos of the process of putting up the shelves, but maybe I'll feature them in a post soon! I always get lots of comments/questions about them when they pop up in the background of an Instagram photo.

Gunner loves books and has quite the little library of his own. The only thing he might love more than books are dogs, so when I came across the book Thank You, God, for Puppies, I knew it would be a winner. G is a big fan of "reading" the book himself and quietly "woofing" as he flips through the pages. It's pretty stinkin cute. The book is also a sturdy board book which is a must with our little guy.

A Trip To The Fort Worth Zoo

We've been pretty busy the past few days between our garage sale on Saturday, our normal Sunday filled with church and small group, a trip to the zoo on Monday, and then dinner celebrating Cody's dad's birthday on Tuesday.

There are times when I find myself feeling guilty for neglecting this space and the various forms of social, but then I realize how backwards that is. Sometimes it's nice that the busy days overshadow this space in my mind...I think that's how it should be. Don't you?

Here are a few pictures from our zoo trip...

I promise I was there too, but I just stayed behind the camera catching G with his Daddy. We took our new #GracoJogger stroller and it was absolutely perfect. Gunner really loved the aquarium and reptile section since he could stand and touch the glass.

I can't wait to see how much more he loves to go to the zoo as he grows older. And this time next year, there will be two little guys with us!!

We've been tackling adoption items all week and have our first round of major paperwork turned in...such a relief. And Saturday is our big garage sale that we've been preparing for. Our New Favorite Stroller -- #GracoJogger

Fair Trade Fashion

So far, the adoption process has changed me in so many ways. It has caused me to be more intentional with my son, knowing that it's a blessing to have the ability to raise him. It has caused me to be less of a complainer, knowing that I am absolutely not in want or need of anything. It has caused me to be thankful for the country that we live in, knowing that in other countries the political unrest is terrifying. It has also caused me to be conscious of the items I buy, investigating how they were manufactured, who they were manufactured by, and what the conditions that they were manufactured under are like.

You might've heard the words "fair trade" thrown around from time to time in regards to products or businesses and had no idea what it meant. I used to be one of those people. In searching the internet, you won't find one, universal definition; however, this definition by FINE (found here) is most commonly referred to --

Fair trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency, and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers - especially in the South. Fair trade organizations (backed by consumers) are engaged actively in supporting producers, awareness raising, and campaigning for changes in the rules and practice of conventional international trade.

Not specifically mentioned in the FINE definition of fair trade, but something that I have often noticed is that most fair trade businesses use portions of their profits for charity. Don't you love that?

In my growing consciousness of fair trade through the adoption process I have found myself investigating some of my favorite brands and their practices...honestly, it's been really sad -- but that's another post for another day; for now we'll just say that it isn't something I'm proud to be supporting or proud to be wearing. On a more positive note though, I've also been finding new companies that follow fair trade practices. And starting today, I'll be sharing those new companies (as I find them and purchase from them) with you through a series called "Fair Trade Fashion."

The first company that I'll be sharing with you is Purse and Clutch. Based in Austin, Texas, P&C is a young company run by Jen Lewis. P&C purchases from wholesale companies who have a vision of connecting the poor of a specific region to the Western markets. Purse and Clutch currently carries products from Uganda, Northern India, rural villages in India, Cambodia, and Nicaragua. My first purchase from P&C was their Convertible Bucket Bag in a hand-loomed herringbone fabric. It's woven by skilled weavers in Uganda using locally-sourced cotton yarns and then sewn together by Gulu tailors. The leather straps are made from remnants in an artisan shoe workshop.

I love that the bag has the ability to be worn cross-body (my favorite way) with the long, removable strap OR over the shoulder with the two shorter straps. The size is perfect having plenty of room for all of my things and space to toss in a diaper, a portable container of wipes, and a little snack for Gunner.

See, I told you that you probably own all of these items...a chambray top, grey tshirt, and black or dark washed jeans. You might not own a pair of clunky combat style boots, but a black flat could work as well.

The Gnarly Whale

In recent months, we have been trying to be a little smarter about what we put IN our bodies -- more veggies and fruits, less processed junk. I also recently made the change to all natural cleaning products after considering how much our bodies (what chemicals did I use to mop the floor?) and food (what chemicals did I use to clean the kitchen counters?) interact with them. So, it has only made sense to begin considering what exactly I'm putting ON my body in regards to beauty and body products.

Honestly, I've found that it's hard to find truly minimal-ingredient, natural beauty products. LOTS of things claim to be "natural," but are far, far from it. But, I recently happened upon a great small business that truly sells the products I've been searching for...I'm looking forward to buying a few tubes of chapstick and the beach waves spray. Plus, I love being able to support a small business -- I will always choose supporting a small business if that's an option.

All of our products are 100% vegan and cruelty free. We’re tree huggers ourselves so we made sure that all of the ingredients used in our products are completely vegan and have not been tested on animals. Final product testing was also done on humans. Most of our printed materials (business cards, postcards, etc) come from recycled paper. We also use reusable packaging when we mail out our orders whenever possible. Our hope is to leave the Earth a little better than when we found it and provide our customers with a way to do the same.

In the almost seven months we have been open, we already have plans to work with an international retailer to carry our products and will be featured in two celebrity gifting suites this year: The Primetime Emmy's and The Cannes Film Festival. Our current product line includes: hair detangler, beach waves, body and face scrub, body spray, shampoo, and lip balm. In the future, we have plans to include a child product line, a pet product line, soap, skin care, and various other hair and body products in the future.

3 Things Kids Should Know About Prayer

I was gifted a copy of Prayers for Boys by the publisher to review on my blog. All thoughts and opinions are 100% mine.

Were you taught about prayer growing up? I mean beyond the fact that you should do it. Were you taught how, or when, or where, or what to pray? I think most of my lessons on prayer came from what I saw most often -- prayers before meals or bedtime OR long, drawn out prayers with words I didn't understand in front of the congregation.

The thing is, I don't think we think much about teaching kids to pray. At least I haven't thought much about it. But, I've begun to realize how important it is for kids to know that there are MANY ways to pray and none of them are right or wrong. I have however begun to think a little bit about what I want Gunner to know about prayer whenever we begin teaching him about it, and I've come up with a short little list...

1) Prayer isn't about the words. I wish I'd embraced that fact when I was in high school or college when I was working as a youth intern. In high school I felt myself struggling to talk to God because I felt like it had to be formal. And in college, when I worked at a local church as a youth intern, I felt myself trying to say all of the "right" Christian words. Thankfully I now know that prayer is just a conversation with someone who deeply cares for you. It doesn't have to be formal or perfect, it just has come from your heart and what you're feeling.

2) It's okay to just be quiet during prayer. Prayer is a conversation. God wants to hear from you but he also wants to speak TO you. This is difficult for me so I think it's definitely something that would be difficult to teach kids, but I think it's important for kids to realize that God wants to communicate with them too.

3) Prayer isn't about just asking for things. God cares about our wants and desires, but most importantly he deserves our praise. Say thank you for everything you have and know that the Bible promises that God will always take cares of your needs.

Recently, I was sent the book Prayers for Boys and it is perfect for introducing the concept of prayer and specifically touches on the things I mentioned above. It's a short little board book that is easily read in one sitting and I think would be a great read when trying to instill prayer in children. There's also a girl version of the book with the same ideas but "more girly" images.

An Adoption Update & Going Analog

Hi friends. How has your week been?

I can't believe it's already Friday, I feel like this week has really just flown by. This week, Gunner had his two week post op appointment to check on his tubes and the doctor said his ears look perfect. We're so glad. He also hasn't had any signs of other sickness since his tubes were put in, which is pretty miraculous considering we used to be at the pediatrician's office at least once a month before.

Just a small adoption process update. We just submitted all of the paperwork necessary for our home study and we have an appointment for our physicals and fingerprinting next week. There are many, many more steps to come but we've been trucking along. We sent out our first support letters last week AND sold our spare truck for $1,500 more than we really "needed." Praise God!

I did want to address one other quick thing in regards to the adoption. We will not be sharing the specific country in Africa that we will be adopting from on my blog or social media of any form. It has nothing to do with you guys, but everything to do with the safety and concern of our future son. Your support has been so incredible and we want to continue being open and honest about the process, BUT this specific thing will be kept to us. Thank you for understanding.

Copycat Linkup {21}

Yesterday, I had every intention of snapping some pictures of a Pinterest inspired outfit that I recently wore on a date night with Code, BUT the universe had other plans for me.

Around 8 am yesterday a utility company showed up in my backyard to work on a cable box and line that we don't use, but is apparently housed in our backyard. They spent half of the day digging up pretty much our entire backyard, replaced or fixed something, and then just shoveled a bunch of dirt back into the holes. They say they'll be back to replace the grass. I sure hope so.

All of that is to say that my Copycat outfit pictures were not taken yesterday. So, today I'm keeping it real and sharing a picture of my typical, day-to-day outfit in the spring time. I usually reserve my more "put together" outfits for girls nights, date nights, or church going. The outfit I'm sharing today? This is my go-to for errand running, cleaning days at home, or the weekly park trip.

L's 5K Run

A few months ago on this little blog of mine I began the journey of something called The Tattoo Project. Through The Tattoo Project all of you helped me raise $1,055 and provided for FOUR orphans in Africa for one year!

I was so humbled and blessed by this experience; and today, I have a beautiful tattoo that constantly reminds me of the journey that God took me on.

Today, L is here to share more about her purpose project and her heart for the orphans. Read on to learn how you can help her and bless more sweet children.

Hey Friends!

I am so thankful to Carly for allowing me to come and greet you all here in this space of hers and to share with you something the Lord has placed on my heart.

Following my senior year of high school, the Lord orchestrated in an incredible way a trip to Africa which was totally unexpected. You can read the details here. Since then, the Lord has been laying things related to that trip even more specifically on my heart.

Changing me to love like He loves in many ways. Breaking my heart for those who feel unloved. Giving me a heart specifically for orphans, adoption and Africa. You'll have to watch this space to see what He continues to do with those heart stirrings.

I have no idea what the future will hold and what the Lord has planned for us specifically yet. I am hoping doors will open for us to pursue foreign adoption at some point. Maybe even heading to Africa long-term should that be what He calls us to.

But for now, while waiting on further leading, I feel His particular burden to care for orphans where I am now, even if unable to adopt at this point in life. To make it a priority to take action. Even if that doesn't require packing a suitcase and heading halfway around the world.

"Pure and genuine religion in the sight of God the Father means caring for orphans and widows in their distress and refusing to let the world corrupt you." --James 1:27

The way I felt the Lord laying on my heart to care for orphans was through an organization called the Mocha Club. They are an incredible organization with existing long term projects in Ghana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe who work to provide for orphans and vulnerable children.

So, this month I am partnering with them in doing something called a purpose project. I raise a specific amount of money for their orphan care projects, then should I meet my goal...I do a project so that my fundraising has a purpose.

The Goal: Raise $750 for orphan projects ongoing in Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe
This will provide care for 3 orphans for a year!

My Project: Once the money is raised, I will be running a 5K race aiming to beat my high school record of 26mins.

How can YOU help? I am looking specifically for people to partner with me financially, helping me reach my goal. You can do that by donating to my project here.

I realize money is tight for so many people right now. Myself included. But any donation NO MATTER HOW SMALL helps achieve this goal of working together to change the lives of three orphans. I opted to give up a Starbucks latte a few times this month and instead donate to the project. (So even $5 will help!) I can't do this without your help, friend.
