Indian police question Tibetan monk on cash controversy

New Delhi - Indian police and federal investigators Saturday questioned Tibetan Buddhist monk the Karmapa Lama after recovering over ₨35,010,328.23worth of cash in various currenciesfrom his monastery.

Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje, leader of the Karma Kagyu sect, missed his usual Saturday morning prayers and public audience, IANS news agency reported.

The Karmapa Lama is considered the most important Tibetan religious figure after the Dalai Lama and the Panchen Lama. The 27-year-old monk who fled to India in 1999 is recognised by China and seen as a possible successor to the Dalai Lama.

Police during a raid Thursday found four large suitcases stashed with cash from the Karmapa Lama's Gyoto monastery in the outskirts of the northern Indian hill town of Dharamsala.

'The foreign currency is from 25 different countries and includes large amounts of US dollars, Chinese Yuan, Hong Kong dollars, Taiwanese and other currencies,' Himachal Pradesh police chief DS Manhas said.

'We will certainly answer all questions that the press and the public have, but for now we respectfully request you to allow us to concentrate on complying fully with the investigation that is underway,' Karma Chungyalpa, spokesman for the Karmapa Lama, said.

The financial dealings of the Karmapa's organization were completely transparent, the spokesman said in a statement.

Searches continued for the third day in the offices at the Gyoto monastery, police said.

'It's a serious issue and even a threat to the internal security of the state,' Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Prem Kumar Dhumal told a press conference.

The money recovered Friday may have been meant for an illegal land deal, IANS quoted police sources as saying.

Rubgi Chosang, an accountant at the monastery, was arrested Thursday.

Dharamsala is home to the Dalai Lama and his Tibetan government-in-exile, which is not recognized by any government. About 110,000 of the estimated 140,000 Tibetan exiles live in India.

George Osborne: VAT rise is 'least damaging' way to tackle deficit

As VAT rises to 20%, chancellor rejects criticism that the tax is regressive, and claims rise is a 'tough but necessary step towards Britain's economic recovery'

George Osborne claimed today that increasing VAT was the "least damaging" way to tackle the national deficit in the face of criticism that the rise will squeeze families, hitting the poor the hardest.

Shoppers flooded high streets yesterday, snapping up items such as furniture, electrical goods and kitchens in an attempt to beat the VAT rise, from 17.5% to 20%, which took effect at midnight.

Although it is widely considered to be a regressive tax, one that takes a higher proportion of the income of people on lower incomes than those on higher incomes, the chancellor argued that increasing VAT was fairer than raising taxes taken directly from income, which he said would cost jobs and ultimately hit poorer people harder.

"Higher income tax or higher national insurance ... these two things I think would have a greater impact on work incentives, on competitiveness of the British economy. I think they would cost jobs," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme. Asked if he was arguing that VAT was "more progressive", Osborne said "absolutely".

The shadow chancellor, Alan Johnson, told the Today programme earlier that putting VAT up was a "broken promise" and that Labour still favoured higher national insurance as an alternative to a 20% VAT rate.

"That was our argument at the general election and that's still our argument now," he said. "The Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development say the VAT increase is going to cost 250,000 jobs whereas the national insurance increase would cost 75,000 jobs. If national insurance was a tax on jobs, VAT is three times the tax on jobs."

Intel tracks 500 design wins for Sandy Bridge chips

The world's largest chip maker will show off its most advanced line of microprocessors ever at the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on Wednesday, complete with a range of laptop and desktop PCs with the chips inside.

The new family of processors, which will lose their Sandy Bridge codename, includes dozens of new chips, according to Uday Marty, director of basic mobility platforms at Intel, during a briefing in Taipei ahead of CES.

The new processor family is the second generation to take on the 'Core' processor name. Four of them will be Core i3 chips, while 12 will be Core i5 chips and another dozen will be Core i7 chips.

A number of Intel partners will show off their latest laptops and desktops with the new processors inside this week at CES.

"We're already tracking 500 design wins," including notebooks and desktops, Marty said.

Gay groups praise Navy's condemnation of videos

The Navy moved quickly on Monday to pledge to investigate videos in which a senior officer uses anti-gay slurs and mimicks masturbation, while a prominent gay rights group praised the military's condemnation of the videos.

Capt. Owen Honors, who commands the USS Enterprise, based in Norfolk, Va., stars in the videos that were aired on the aircraft carrier's closed-circuit television system in 2006 and 2007 when he was the ship's second in command. In recent days, the videos have made Honors an Internet sensation.

"What we see here is, unfortunately, a 49-year-old Navy captain acting like a 19-year-old fraternity boy," said Aubrey Sarvis, executive director of the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which has advocated for gay military members. "There is no place for that type of frat-house behavior."

Honors appeared in the videos while he was the USS Enterprise's executive officer. He took command of the ship, which is expected to deploy soon, in May. The officer who captained the ship in 2006 and 2007 has been promoted to rear admiral.

It is not clear why the videos are surfacing now or whether the Navy investigated the videos earlier and decided to promote Honors to the USS Enterprise's top job despite their content.

Magnitude-4.2 earthquake rattles Indiana

(CNN) -- A magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck north-central Indiana on Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The quake struck just before 8 a.m. ET and was three miles deep, according to the USGS.
The epicenter was located about 15 miles east-southeast of Kokomo, 15 miles west-southwest from Marion and 50 miles north of Indianapolis.
There were no reports of damage in Indianapolis, but closer to the epicenter residents reported being rattled.
"Funny, I thought one of my kids ran into a wall, and lo and behold, it was just a 4.2-magnitude earthquake in Indiana," one person wrote on Twitter.

“Absolutely false. I just spoke with him,” said the actor’s rep, after a flurry of panicked posts made the rounds on Twitter this afternoon.

The hoax is just the latest in false celebrity death claims, which also recently killed off Eddie Murphy, Adam Sandler, andMorgan Freeman. The Owen Wilson confusion got going with a news report from the dubiously titled Global Associated News, which claimed that Wilson had snowboarded into a tree and died in Zermatt, Switzerland. It then quickly got picked up and passed around. (Oh, the tricky dark side of social networking!) But it was easy to see this one was a hoax: If you click on the “Home” section of the article, you are directed to a site called Fake a Wish, which allows one to “enter a celebrity name to create a list of fake articles about them.” Sigh. It’s a slow news week and all, but can’t we please just quit with the fake celebrity death reports?

M.S. Dhoni credited V.V.S. Laxman and India's bowlers for the series-evening victory here in Kingsmead, but added that it wasn't a path-breaking win, merely the continuation of a process.

“Laxman's 90-odd runs really mattered in the end,” said Dhoni. “You can always count on him. Especially when you see he hasn't scored for two or three innings, you know something special is coming. It was a special innings because it was the sort of wicket where it was difficult to convince yourself that you have settled.”

Dhoni said the conditions had helped India's bowlers. “One of the worries before this Test was whether we would be able to get 20 wickets,” he said. “Our bowlers are swing-bowlers, and the conditions here really helped them. They also performed really well.”

The Indian captain said the team was used to playing with its back to the wall — this experience had helped. “More often than not we are 1-0 down, and so we are used to it,” he said. “If you see the Test team, there is a lot of experience. A lot of them have played for 10-15 years.

“This experience has really counted for us. But it's not just about one victory. Then what about we have been doing in the last few years? All those wins have an impact on the confidence and morale of the side.”

Asked about Sreesanth's efforts and antics, Dhoni said, “It's important to keep him in control. It's good for everybody, us, the opposition, the umpires, the spectators. All I said to him, was to keep the time he takes to bowl an over down, not take six or seven minutes.”

South African captain Graeme Smith said his side surrendered the match when it was bowled out for 131 in the first innings. “We probably lost the match on day two,” he said. “It wasn't a 131 wicket. There were some unlucky dismissals and India bowled. But it's difficult to catch up after getting 131.”

Smith complimented the Kingsmead wicket, saying that it provided an even contest between bat and ball. He denied, however, that leaving grass on the surface had backfired. “It was a good wicket for Test cricket,” he said. “We've never asked for green wickets. All we wanted was pace and bounce, which we are used to.

“And it's not like India's batting set the house on fire, but they did enough, which is what is needed to win Test matches. They did better than us in the key moments.”

Weather Journal: Boxing Day Blizzard in the Making

Post-Christmas travelers can expect a belated coal in their stockings Sunday: All the bits and pieces are in place for a major winter storm across the East Coast, with a blizzard warning for New York City, Boston and much of coastal New England, where the heaviest snow is expected to occur. Greater New York could rack up truly impressive snow totals — up to 18 inches! — before this storm is finished Monday.

Beyond heavy snow, a blizzard warning means that we should expect winds of more than 35 mph and visibility of a quarter mile or less over the next 36 hours — factors that are likely to spell trouble for air travelers. Expect holiday travel to be delayed across the country as major hubs of Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York and Boston become snowed in one by one on Sunday and Monday.

Many locations outside the blizzard zone, from Myrtle Beach, S.C., to Maine, should see significant snow as well. Philadelphia Eagles fans with tickets to Sunday night’s contest should know what they’re in for: field conditions for the game against the Vikings could very well look like something out of the North Pole. In short, hold on to your hats (and your children), this could be one wild sleigh ride.

In fact, the snow storm may be so intense that “thundersnow” — that rarest of meteorological holy grails — could occur off and on throughout Sunday over Manhattan, as the peak of the storm moves through. Keep an ear to the window to listen for the telltale rumbles of thunder.

The last time a storm of this magnitude hit the region was the “Snowicane” on February 26, 2010,, when New York City schools were closed for a rare snow day and winds of up to 91 mph lashed the East Coast. The Bharatiya Janata Party may face the first phase of elections to zilla and taluk panchayats on Sunday with more confidence than the Opposition Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular).

Being the ruling party, the BJP has an edge over the opponents. Besides, the BJP had outsmarted its rivals in all the elections that were held after it came to power 31 months ago. To top it all, the BJP already has one zilla panchayat (ZP) and six taluk panchayat (TP) seats in its kitty, where its members won unopposed. With these gains on its side, the BJP, particularly Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa, has every reason to claim that it will bag the maximum number of panchayat seats.
