Apart from Zardozi work, Lucknow is also famous for its fine thread work known as Chikankari. Though it started as a white on white embroidery, but the craftsmen are seen to experiment with the art and you can find the work on any colour with contrasting thread work. It is a delicate form of artwork is done on different fabrics ranging from muslin to silk. It uses thread work and stiches like chain stich, backstitch, hemstitch etc.

Originating from the regions of Punjab, Phulkari is a thread work which is famous for its colourful patterns and designs where phul means flower. The designs which are scattered on the fabric are known as phulkari and the ones where the whole fabric is covered with the embroidery are known as bagh. They are mostly worn by women during the weddings and special occasions. The common trait of phulkari is that silken coloured thread is used on the other side of the cloth using a darn stitch. Phulkari dupattas and shawls are very famous throughout the country. The bright colours of red, orange and yellow are very common when it comes to Phulkari work.

Heavy embroidery Work

Kutch thread work is easy to identify because of its rich and heavy designs. A thread work from Gujarat, Kutch work is all about vibrant colours, extensive thread work, mirrors and beads, embellishments, etc. The patterns of Kutch work on the fabrics are done with silken thread and it draws its creativity from the motifs related to various aspects of human life. The famous Gujarati Ghaghra Choli is often designed with Kutch work. Another unique thread work Kashidakaari of Jammu and Kashmir is a colourful form of needlework and the craftsmen often look up to the nature as an inspiration for the designs. Cool and Light Summers

Summers are all about cotton. It is light and comes in soft colours. It keeps you breezy and gives the body space to breathe. They tend to have a cool and calming effect on the body. It is soaks sweat easily and hence people prefer cotton the most in summers. This is a natural fabric, but it can also be mixed with polyester. Such a blend helps you to keep cool as well as eases your burden of ironing the fabric again and again. Another fabric to opt for in summers is the linen. Glass Fibre:

Glass fibre is one of the man-made fibre and can be manufactured either in filament form or in staple form.

Raw Material:

The principle ingredient of glass fibre is silicon dioxide. However, depending upon the end use, other material like lime, magnesia, alumina, soda, potash or boric oxide is used.

Based on this, there are three types of glass fibres. Those are

Alkali type glass or Glass ‘A’ (A-Alkali)
Electrical type glass or Glass ‘E’ (E- Electrical)
Chemical type glass or Glass ‘C’ (C-Chemical)

The approximate compositions of different type of glass fibres are shown in table.

The principle ingredient i.e. silicon dioxide is generally obtained from sands or sand stones. The second important ingredient is lime, which is used for a stabilizing influence. Magnesium oxide has similar effect. Alumina is usually added to improve the strength; durability and resistance to weathering the other ingredients are generally added to improve acid durability. Additions of titanium oxide reduce the viscosity of the melt. Borium oxide improves weathering charecteristics and also it increases the melting rate.

Hemp is derived from the plant known as Cannabis Sativa. It is believed to have originated in the southwest of the Caspian sea (Russia).It spread to India and China and later to Italy, Switzerland and France. The plant is robust and grows naturally, requiring little cultivation. The stalks may reach a height of 10 feet or more .The Male is cultivated purely for its fibre, in the case of Female the flowers are allowed to ripen so that the seeds are harvested.
