Tram Ton Pass is Vietnam’s highest mountain pass. On a clear day, the views are spectacular. Don’t be deterred by mist in Sapa. Conditions on the pass are frequently different to those in town. The temperature can also rise quite a bit on the pass as you break away from the cooler air of Sapa.

Thach Bac or Silver waterfall is a compulsory stop for local tour groups and can be pretty busy. The falls are beautiful but probably only warrant a visit if time permits and in conjunction with a visit to Tram Ton Pass 3kms further along the road.

The Mekong Delta is the region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries. The Mekong delta region encompasses a large portion of southwestern Vietnam of 39,000 square kilometers. The size of the area covered by water depends on the season.

The Mekong Delta has recently been dubbed as a 'biological treasure trove.' Over 10,000 new species have been discovered in previously unexplored areas of Mekong Delta.

The Mekong Delta, as a region, lies immediately to the west of Ho Chi Minh City, roughly forming a triangle stretching from My Tho in the east to Chau Doc and Ha Tien in the northwest, down to Ca Mau and the East Sea at the southernmost tip of Vietnam.

The Mekong Delta region of Vietnam displays a variety of physical landscapes, ranging from mountains and highlands to the north and west to broad, flat flood plains in the south. This diversity of terrain was largely the product of tectonic uplift and folding brought about by the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates about 50 million years ago. The soil of the lower Delta consists mainly of sediment from the Mekong and its tributaries, deposited over thousands of years as the river changed its course due to the flatness of the low-lying terrain.

Phu Quoc is part of the southern province of Kien Giang province. The island is 50 km long (from north to south) and 25 km wide (from east to west at its widest part).

Surrounded by more than 40 km of white beaches decorated with coconut palms, Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s largest island. Its western coastline is sparsely populated while the interior is largely covered with jungle and mainly deserted.

The Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1945) is the last of the Vietnamese dynasties. In total, there were 13 emperors, only seven of which had tombs however: Gia Long, Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, Duc Duc, Dong Khanh and Khai Dinh.

The seven imperial tombs are located in a hilly region southwest of the Citadel. The tombs of Minh Mang, Tu Duc, Dong Khanh and Khai Dinh belong to the major touristic destinations in Hue.

Each of the tombs was constructed during the reign of the emperor it was named after. All the tombs are equipped with statues and monuments in perfect Feng Shui harmony to create a natural setting, in the architecture of which the respective emperor's philosophical tendencies are often reflected.

The general elements incorporated in all the tombs are: walls, triple gate (Tam Quan Gate), Salutation Court, Stele House, temples, lakes and ponds, pavilions, gardens, and finally the tomb.

Son Tra peninsula

Son Tra Peninsula, about 10km from the center of Da Nang City to the north-east, is a special gift of the god to Da nang. It is an ideal place for tourists in Vietnam travel to the city, to get away for the day and enjoy the real feeling of a different Vietnam.

Son Tra looks like a mushroom of which the cap is Son Tra Mountain and stalk is a beautiful sandy beach that affords an ideal area for bathing, swimming, playing sports and fishing. Son Tra acts as a giant screen protecting Da Nang from storms and cyclones coming from the sea. Son Tra is put under the national protected forest regulation since it is a natural preservation area.

The peninsula is famous for its plentiful plants and fauna as well as the attractive scenery. It is said that fairies used to come here for singing, dancing and playing chess so Son Tra is also called Tien Sa.

On this mountain, there still remain more than 30km² of natural forests, nearly 300 types of plants and several hundred kinds of fauna, including rare animal.

From the top of the mountain, you can see the overall view of Da Nang City, Marble Mountains, Ba Na – Mount Chua. Suoi Da (Stone Stream) lies by the side of the foot of the mountain, fine sandy surfaces run round the peninsula, several breaks of waves are running steadily up and down and washing up on the stones heaped up around the seaside.

All are attractive spots for tourists. It is so majestic and it is so romantic, it is so wide and it is really beautiful.

1,000-yr-old Lao tea forest to open for public

The tourism authorities in northwest Laos province of Oudomxay are promoting their 1,000-year-old tea forest and viewing platform at the top of Vieng Mountain as a tourist attraction, hoping to entice visitors to linger longer.

An official from Pakbeng Tourism Department's Tourism Promotion Division, Vilasid Phadthavong, said the department is seeking government funding to develop more tourism infrastructure in the riverside town, where a lot of tourist boats stop.

They think the town has a lot more to offer than many people are aware, and are attempting to transform it from an overnight stopover to a destination in its own right.
The 1,000-year-old tea forest will offer visitors the chance to learn more about local tea production, and they can enjoy a cup or two while taking in the rolling green hills from the top of Phou Vieng.

The local night market also offers visitors the chance to admire the colorful ethnic handicrafts and other exotic products on display, providing plenty of shopping opportunities.

The district has a number of organized activities for tourists to enjoy if they stay a little longer. They can visit nearby caves, go trekking in the forest and visit Leu ethnic villages as well as go elephant riding.

At present tourists traveling by boat between the town of Luang Prabang and Huayxai district in Bokeo province stay for only one night. This is mainly due to the schedule of the boat operators, but local tourist authorities want more of them to stay longer.

Vilasid hopes the new tourist attractions will encourage people to stay one more night, which will see more revenue flow to Pakbeng businesses and the pockets of local residents.
The department plans to liaise with local tourism operators, and ask them if they can incorporate longer stays in Pakben as part of their itinerary.

They also plan to improve their promotional efforts, in order to firmly establish Pakbeng on the tourist map.

The district currently has two hotels, 16 restaurants, 16 guesthouses with a total of 250 rooms, and one resort.

So far this year, Pakbeng has received almost 22,500 visitors from Europe, Japan, Republic of Korea, Thailand and other nations, as well as almost 900 domestic tourists.

None of them are really very high end beach club. So here we are to assist the hotel and make the club special. I think this is probably the first proper beach club in Phuket.

"If you look at other beach clubs, they all seem intent on competing with Bali. But the beaches in Bali cannot compare to this; they have black sand. I would say the most attractive feature of Xana is the beach itself. And the 35-metre pool is an excellent investment. It's a great place to chill and watch the sunset.

"We're also looking for big, international acts to bring in. This place is big and there's potential to set up something special. We're hoping to bring big acts maybe on a monthly basis in high season.

"You know, it's like bringing a circus to town; you have to have entertainment for the people. I want it to be a place where people come away saying, 'wow, I had a great night'. We'll have parties and big events to make their nights special. People from Hong Kong, Sydney, Singapore and Bangkok will fly in for the weekend.

For first time travelers to Malaysia there are several tips that will make your holiday less stressful and infinitely more enjoyable, such as:

Check Health Warnings
Before leaving for Malaysia visit your family doctor to check health warnings for the area you intend to visit. If you intend to do any hiking or rainforest walks then you will need to start taking malaria tablets around a week before your departure. Your family doctor will be able to advise of any other precautions ormedications that you need.

Airport Transfers
By far the easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport into the capital is via the KLIA Express (airport express train). The train is very modern with video screens showing points of interest and things to do in Malaysia while you enjoy a comfortable ride into Kuala Lumpur in around 35 minutes. Using a bus or taxi transfer will normally take around one hour by comparison and cost a little more. An added convenience when using the KLIA Express to connect with a departing flight is the facility to book your luggage onto your flight from the central train station in Kuala Lumpur (providing you do this at least 2.5 hours before your flight).

Taxi Fares
Always ask how much the fare will be to get to your destination before getting into the taxi. Taxi fares in Malaysia are for the most part quite reasonable however at times a naive traveler can be easy pickings, especially on a return trip from an outlying area so be sure to ask for the cost of the fare beforehand and if it seems too high then you can usually find another taxi to get a better deal. The exception to this however is during peak hours in Kuala Lumpur when you will pay more because of traffic delays. Your hotel concierge can advise you on what the busiest traffic times are likely to be. Planning your movements around the capital outside of these times will save you money if you're on a tight budget.

Don't drink the tap water
To reduce your chances of having your holiday ruined by tummy upsets it is wise not to consume the local tap water. During your stay keep these points in mind:
1) Clean your teeth and toothbrush with bottled water.
2) Remember to specify "No Ice" when ordering cocktails or mixer drinks. (Many of the more up-market resorts and hotels have ice that has been made using filtered or bottled water which is perfectly safe, however if you wish to be extra cautious then it is safer to forgo the ice).

Buy personal items from a supermarket
Make purchases of personal care items such as sunscreen, toothpaste or bottled water from a local supermarket instead of the resort or hotel where you are staying. Although the prices of these items may not seem too expensive you will normally find a supermarket or small convenience store somewhere close to the resort where these items are up to a third of the price that you will pay at the resort. Any money you save on these purchases can be used for souvenir shopping instead.

Restaurants
When you're staying in regional areas and choosing somewhere to eat keep in mind that you are no longer in a western country. Malaysia is a relatively poor country which is more evident in outlying areas than it is in the capital. While in your home country a restaurant in a run down looking building could indicate a possible health risk this is not the case in regional areas of Malaysia as many of the buildings are old because of the general poverty of the population. The best guide for choosing a restaurant is if the local people are happy eating there it is a good indication that the food is safe.

Keep valuables concealed
Always keep wallets, purses, mobile phones etc in your pockets or backpack to avoid the attention of pickpockets, especially in larger cities. Although not a major problem any large population has its share of thieving so it is best to keep your valuables secure. It is also wise to carry your backpack on the front of your body in certain areas such as the china town markets in Kuala Lumpur where it can be quite crowded giving pickpockets a chance to access valuables within the outer compartments of a backpack.

Thailand to retain top spot in rice exports

Thailand would be able to maintain its position as the world’s largest rice exporter this year, permanent secretary for commerce Yanyong Puangraj said on Tuesday.

Thailand exported 2.6 million tonnes of rice, worth 53.67 billion baht, from Jan 1 to May 17 and became the world's largest exporter.

The United States took second place, exporting two million tones of rice and Vietnam third place with its 1.6 million tonnes of rice exported during the same period, said Mr Yanyong.

The average rice export price increased by 20 per cent to US$669 per tonne, from US$566, showing that the world market still wanted Thai rice even with its price raised by the price pledging scheme, he added.

Before I go on holiday I like to know as much as I can about a place, what their customs are, traditional foods, top places to see – everything I can find. So, when we started to look into a holiday to Thailand I immediately started doing my research. Now we're back I thought I would share what I found about eating out in Thailand.

Influences in Thai food

First of all the influences in Thai food...it's influences come from a mixture of Tai, Indian and Chinese with a touch of Malaysian and Indonesian which accounts for the lovely spiced and sometimes (very) hot food. There is a lot of coconut, chilli, lemongrass, garlic and ginger flavours along with 'Nam pla' (fish paste). Thai food is incredibly aromatic and the first taste of any of it is usually amazing!

How to eat like the Thais
It's unusual to eat alone and this may draw you some odd looks. Far more common is eating in groups with several meals shared amongst the group. Quite a nice way to eat and good to get a taste of everything. It's also a very sociable way of eating and the meal is not treated as fuel to be devoured but tastes to be savoured.

Usually your meal will include rice, curry, soup and several side dishes. There are two types of rice with 'sticky' (khao niaw) being used mainly in sweets and Kaho Jao being plain white rice.

Traditionally Thais ate their food with their hands but food is now eaten with a fork and spoon as the food is all in bite sized pieces before it gets to the table. There's something nice about not having the formality of a knife and fork and using a spoon to get every last drop out of your bowl!

Thais tend to eat 'little but often' and you won't be short of places to snack throughout the day from popping into a restaurant to snacking from street stalls – try everything to get a real flavour of what Thailand has to offer.

Choosing a Thai Restaurant

When you choose your venue don't be put off by the look of it! One of the best places we ate was in a restaurant up a back alley – was fantastic food and I'd have eaten there every day! Another great place was in the top of a market where we had the most amazing and cooling ice drink which was more than needed in the heat.

Tens of thousands rally in Bangkok

BANGKOK — Buddhist monks led prayers as tens of thousands gathered in Bangkok to mark the second anniversary of deadly clashes between soldiers and “Red Shirt” protesters.

The scene Saturday was a sharp contrast with two years earlier, when Thailand was at war with itself and troops moved in to crush a nine-week anti-government protest that left more than 90 people dead and 2,000 injured. It was the country’s worst political violence in decades.

Many speakers addressed the crowd Saturday to demand justice. There have been no charges filed and no prosecutions for any of the killings. A group of 100 orange-robed monks led a solemn prayer for the dead.

But the mood was also festive. Music blared from speakers as people sang and danced in the streets of central Bangkok, with several of the city’s main boulevards closed to traffic to accommodate the sprawling rally.

“Coming here today, I feel free and lighthearted. I don’t have to fear for my life like two years ago,” said Kalong Srisang, a 52-year-old factory worker from the outskirts of Bangkok. “Back then we wanted democracy for the people. Now we’ve got it. We just have to make sure it’s here to stay.”

2 years after conflict, gunmen go unnamed

BANGKOK, Thailand — The anonymous phone calls began a month or two after Kamolket Akahad, a 25-year-old volunteer medic, was shot dead during a guns-blazing Thai army crackdown.

Bangkok was still reeling from its bloodiest political violence in decades: a series of April-May 2010 clashes pitting troops against the anti-establishment “Red Shirts” street movement. The crisis had recently wounded 2,000 and left 75 civilians and eight soldiers dead. But even then, Kamolket’s family had already started a crusade to identify and punish her killer.

Before long, they were attracting undue attention. “The caller’s gist was that he wanted us to give up,” said Natthaput, the slain medic’s 22-year-old little brother. “I told him ‘I can’t stop. I won’t stop ... we’re only going to up the pressure.'”

Subsequent calls, also anonymous, suggested pay offs in exchange for silence. “He asked, ‘Is there anything you want?’ I said, ‘Yeah, make me prime minister so I can fix this problem myself.’”

As relatives of the dead solemnly commemorate the protests’ two-year anniversary, there is little hope that their loved ones’ killers will ever face trial.

No soldier or official has been charged. The identities of armed commandoes within protest camps, who sometimes resisted troops with their own military-grade weapons, remain a mystery.

The mystery may go unsolved forever. A pending amnesty bill in parliament would absolve all officials, protesters, cops and troops implicated in the 2010 political violence.

The bill’s passage would continue a pattern in Thailand: explosive protests, harsh army crackdown and then amnesty all around. The latest round of protests recalls protesters challenging the Thai army’s grip on politics in 1976 and 1992. Both were sparked by popular anger towards coup plotters. Both ended in scores of civilian deaths.

Sibal to DoP: Launch premium logistic services within 6 months

The Minister directs DoP to focus more on parcels and logistics services as the market for letter mail is on the decline across the globe

The Department of Posts has been asked to introduce premium logistics services in select 80 to 90 cities within six months to tap the expanding e-commerce market in the country and enhance its revenue by 15%.
"India Post must launch business projects that earns additional revenue of not less than 15% for the department," Communications and IT Minister Kapil Sibal said in latest direction to DoP.

The Minister, in the order, directed DoP to focus more on parcels and logistics services as the market for letter mail is on the decline across the globe.

"To get a strong foothold in this segment, India Post must launch a premium parcel and logistics service in selected 80 to 90 cities," Sibal said.

Vietnam is not the only Asian country dealing with anepidemic of the viral childhood disease, hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) as reports out of Singapore have shown the number of cases growing dramatically.

The Singaporean Ministry of Health (MoH) reported Fridaythat there were 1,394 cases last week, a 19-per-cent spike from the previous high reported the preceding week. The latest figures bring the total number of HFMD cases this year to 13,289.

A spokesperson for the MoH said the HFMD cases are not the enterovirus 71 (EV71) strain (the pathogenic virus that is implicated in serious complications).

Health officials are working closely with educational institutions to ensure high standards of hygiene and to check on the health of kids daily upon arrival. If kids arrive at school sick, they should be referred to a health care provider.

HFMD is typically a benign and self-limiting disease. Most common in young children, it presents as fever, oral lesions and rash on the hands, feet and buttocks. The oral lesions consist of rapidly-ulcerating vesicles on the buccal mucosa, tongue, palate and gums. The rash consists ofpapulovesicular lesions on the palms, fingers and soles, which generally persist for seven to 10 days, and maculopapular lesions on the buttocks.
