I found them at the Mangpong branch at Fashion Island, but I imagine they're widely available (at least for now).

You might also check what titles are available using amornmovie.com, mangpong.co.th, or boomerangshop.com. Amorn Movie is nice because you can click a production company name to see all titles from the same company, for example: Five Star Productions. Or you can search for "fivestars" on the Mangpong site. Etc.

For me, the best Thai-English dictionary is Domnern-Sathienpong's Thai-English Dictionary, 3rd edition: it has the best word equivalents by far, but it is far from complete, and sometimes very frustrating for that reason for a translator. I complement it usually with Wit Thiengburanathum's T-E D, old, badly produced with plenty of boobs, but fairly complete (it claims 'The Nation's most entries').
Online, I would recommend the use of www.thai-language.com/dict, along with guru.sanook.com/index.php,english-thai-dictionary.com/index.php, lexitron.nectec.or.th/2009_1 and www.thai2english.com/dictionary/ which have different, sometimes complementary, strengths.

A small correction: I'm just starting on the third of the four volumes of See Phaendin. The first two are being checked against the Thai, line by line.

Hello, I have referred many people to the old FSI site, having found it accidentally several months ago. I studied Spanish, Italian, and Cantonese with these courses twenty years ago.
You can imagine how excited I was to find them free.
I have two Italian courses I wanted to donate, and could not get a response from anyone. I gave them to a cousin but could get them back if they could be converted for the public.

I really hope we will have the chance to read this new translation of Phaendin. Getting fiction published is never easy, as I well now, but this should be well ahead of the field.

i was wondering what would be the best (most thorough) thai-english dictionary in your opinion? I'm in Thailand,and I have the SE-ED green dictionary (30,000 words, supposedly), but I recently came across an old copy (not mine) of a New Model (orange cover) dictionary that seems to have many more, including a phonetic rendering (in Thai) of difficult to spell words, and a lot of historical names etc.

RTGS has gone through a number of significant changes since the 1930s. I consider it a sort of necessary evil. It's often not pretty (take เหนื่อย = nueai -- four consecutive vowels!), but at least it's a standard of some sort, so I support its use in contexts like road signs. It's use is still nowhere near standard, though.

I wasn't aware of a membership type called simply สมาชิก. As far as I know, the three types of membership are ภาคีสมาชิก "member", ราชบัณฑิต "fellow", and ราชบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์ "honorary fellow". These three categories are collectively referred to as สมาชิก, though.

As I understand the process, the ภาคีสมาชิก apply (you will see periodic announcements on the RI website announcing openings). The ราชบัณฑิต, however, are nominated from among the ภาคีสมาชิก and presented to the Prime Minister. The PM then takes the names(s) to His Majesty the King for royal appointment as ราชบัณฑิต.

1) Do you know that members of RI [สมาชิก, not the ภาคีสมาชิก]have to apply for the position before they are considered for membership? They are not nominated.
2) Thai -> English transliteration of "อิว" was changed from "iu" to "io" a few years back. I asked someone at the RI website, who kindly explained that the RI wanted to maintain the "consistency" because "o" = "ว" -- as in "อาว" = "ao", "เอียว" = "ieo". I was flabbergasted.
