December 1964 The SR-71 takes to the air for the first time from Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California. On 1 May 1960 a CIA U-2 spy plane was shot down over the Soviet Union. The U-2 had been the United States premiere aerial reconnaissance aircraft, but because of its slow speed was viewed as vulnerable to modern surface-to-air systems. The CIA turned to Kelly Johnson and the Lockheed Skunk Works program for a new aircraft, that soon developed the A-12. The A-12 was a precursor to the SR-71, with the latter airframe capable of carrying a larger fuel and camera load. The SR-71 was designed for flight over Mach 3, and could carry two pilots in tandem cockpits, with the forward cockpit for the pilot and the rear cockpit for the Reconnaissance Systems Officer who operated the surveillance systems. The SR-71 remained in service throughout the Cold War, and was retired by the US Air Force in 1998 and NASA in 1999.

The ATR 72 was developed from the ATR 42 in order to increase the seating capacity (48 to 78) by stretching the fuselage by 4.5 metres (15 ft), increasing the wingspan, adding more powerful engines, and increasing fuel capacity by approximately 10 percent. The 72 was announced in 1986, and made its maiden flight on 27 October 1988. One year later, on 27 October 1989, Finnair became the first airline to put the aircraft into service. ATR aircraft have been operating in Thailand since 1990, with three airlines, Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and PB Air, currently operating ATR 72s. The aircraft delivered today is the first being ordered by the Government.

Stéphane Mayer, Chief Executive Officer of ATR, declared: “We are confident that these specifically designed VIP ATR aircraft will fulfill the transportation needs of the highest authorities in Thailand”.

He also underlined “the importance of the strong support base of ATR in South East Asia, which is definitely contributing to our continued success in this part of the world. Airlines, as well as Governments, know they can count on our expertise and our proximity to efficiently operate their ATR fleets.”

Commenting on ATR presence in South East Asia, he added: “Our support facilities include the Asian ATR Training Center (AATC), located in Bangkok and equipped with two Full Flight Simulators, enabling us to provide high qualified training courses to pilots and engineers throughout the region. In addition, we rely on ATR Eastern Support (AES) in Singapore for spares and technical support to all our operators in Asia and the Pacific.”

In the 1960s and 1970s when the U.S. and Iran were on friendly terms, the U.S. sold 225 F-4D, F-4E, and RF-4E Phantoms to Iran. The Imperial Iranian Air Force [IIAF] saw at least one engagement, resulting in a loss, after an RF-4C was rammed by a Soviet MiG-21 during Project Dark Gene, an ELINT operation during the Cold War. The Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force Phantoms saw heavy action in the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s and are kept operational by overhaul and servicing from Iran's aerospace industry. Notable operations of Iranian F-4s during the war included Operation Scorch Sword, an attack by two F-4s against the Iraqi Osirak nuclear reactor site near Baghdad on 30 September 1980, and the attack on H3, a 4 April 1981 strike by eight Iranian F-4s against the H-3 complex of air bases in the far west of Iraq, which resulted in many Iraqi aircraft being destroyed or damaged for no Iranian losses. Iranian F-4s were in use as of late 2014; the aircraft reportedly conducted air strikes on ISIS targets in eastern Iraqi province of Diyala.

The success of Boeing's Stratofreighter series led to the development of the K-97 Stratotanker. Modern aerial in flight refueling was pioneered by Boeing and several historic flights were made using both the probe-and-drogue method and the flying boom. The probe-and-drogue method entailed the use of a trailing hose dangling from the tanker aircraft. The receiver plane was fitted with a tube-like extension aimed forward. The pilot of the receiver plane would close on the tanker and drive the tube (probe) into a cone at the end of the trailing line (drogue). When the connection was secured, the tanker would pump fuel in to the receiver tanks. with the set up,several planes could be refueled simultaneously.
The flying boom method uses a rigid tube attached to the tail of the tanker. This tube is fitted with a "V" shaped wing.A crew member, called "Boomer",views the approaching receiver plane and, using aircraft type controls, literally flies the boom into the tank receptacle in the receiver. The pilot of the receiver then flies in formation with the tanker until the tanks are topped-off.
After the war, many Boeing B-29s were converted to the KB-29 Tankers. Eventually the faster Boeing B-50's was modified into the KB-50 tanker, some of these being provied with auxiliary jet pods for even more speed. Because of the increased volume in the C-97 fuselage,it became the next generation aerial tanker. The KC-97G version carried auxiliary tanks for increased range.
One unusual feature of the KC-97G was the ability to be used as either a tanker or personnel transport without modification.
The Boeing KC-97G could carry 96 troops or 69 stretcher cases and foue crew while still loaded with tanker gear.It was powered by x4 3,500 HP. P&W R-4360 Was Major engines, giving it a top speed of 375 mph at 30,200 feet was 4,300 miles.

Strategic Air Command (SAC) was both a Department of Defense Specified Command and a United States Air Force (USAF) Major Command (MAJCOM) responsible for Cold War command and control of two of the three components of the U.S. military's strategic nuclear strike forces, the so-called "Nuclear Triad," with SAC having control of land-based strategic bomber aircraft and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs). SAC also operated all USAF jet aerial refueling, strategic reconnaissance, and airborne command post aircraft.
