Dos and Don'ts in Thailand

One of the main reasons people travel is to explore other cultures and establish how other countries and cultures do things. It is then quite remarkable then to see people wandering around the kingdom imposing their cultural approach on the situations and events they encounter. Often these leads to confusion, worse, it sometimes leads to ugly scenes that are entirely avoidable with a modicum on insight on how things are done in Thailand. What follows then is a list of Dos and Don’ts for when you are in the kingdom:

The Monarchy

The monarchy is revered by all Thais and people will simply will not tolerate any lack respect towards any members of the royal family – past or present. If you come from a culture like that in the United Kingdom, where royals are often in the news and are sometimes subject to criticism, be especially careful. Criticism of the king and royal family is not just frowned upon in Thailand; it is against the law – a punishable offence that is taken very seriously. As an example to underscore the importance of this issue, in 2002 two journalists from the Far Eastern Economic Review published a short article about the relationship between, Thaksin Shinawatra, the country’s prime minister, and King Bumibol Adulyadej. As a result of the article, the journalists were threatened with expulsion for contravening Thailand’s tough lèse majesté laws.

Religion

Thailand’s national religion is Buddhism (although there are significant numbers of Muslims and a minority group of Christians) and it is very important to be respectful as far as the religion is concerned. Always dress ‘politely’ when entering a temple or religious shrine. As you are on holiday in a hot country, your perspective of polite dress might be coloured by the situation you are in. However, shorts, bikinis, tops that show your bare arms, skirts that show your legs, open-toed sandals and generally dirty or unkempt attire is considered inappropriate. In some of the larger temples like Wat Prakeaw guards will actually forbid you from entering if you are dressed inappropriately, and you may have to hire sarongs and strips of material to cover yourself up before being permitted to enter. At the smaller temples you are own your own – do the right thing!

Buddha Images

Buddha images are sacred, whatever size or condition. Never climb on a Buddha image, and be very careful about taking photos – some images are so sacred photographs are forbidden. Abide by this rule or you may even be asked to leave. If you can’t cross your legs, don’t sit on the floor in front of temple’s Buddha image – in doing so you will point your feet at the Buddha which is an act of sacrilege (see Feet below). The 2004 film ‘Hollywood Buddha’ caused an uproar in Thailand and other Buddhist countries in the region when advertising posters for the film showed a central character sitting on the head of a Buddha image. Their reaction was most un-Thai like. Be warned.

Monks

Buddhist monks are not allowed to touch or be touched by a woman or accept anything a woman might offer. If a woman wants to give something to a monk it must first be given to a man, or put on a piece of cloth. The monk will then drag the cloth to him before picking the item up. Likewise a monk will not shake a man’s hand – that type of contact is forbidden. Monks travel on public transport and require the same respect there as they would receive at the temple. If a bus or train, etc. is crowded and a monk is likely to come into contact with people, do not hesitate to give the monk your seat. Often special seats are allocated for monks only – don’t sit in them!

Shoes

Do not wear shoes inside a temple where Buddha images are kept. Take your shoes off before entering someone’s home.

Greetings

Thais do not shake hands; they ‘wai’ – a gesture made by placing your hands together in front of your face a bowing a little. Generally, you should not wai to a child and a younger person should wai an older person first. However, these rules are possibly a little more flexible as far as a foreigner is concerned, the Thais you wai will generally very much appreciate you delving into the local custom and practice.

The Head

Whereas in the west a friendly pat on the head, especially the head of someone a bit younger than you, will be regarded as a friendly and supportive gesture, in Thailand any gesture towards the head will cause Thais to recoil and will be greeted with shock and possibly annoyance. Thais regard the head as the highest part of the body – the temple of the body as it were. As such touching someone’s head is entirely unacceptable.

The Feet

Whereas the head is the highest point of the body, the feet are the lowest. Do not point at things with your feet, and do not point the palms of your feet at anyone (see Buddha Images above).

Shouting and Shows of Annoyance

In Thailand shouting and shows of annoyance are entirely frowned upon, whatever the situation. There may be times when you face frustrations, do so quietly a calmly. Shouting and showing annoyance are signs of lack of discipline and in doing either you are in fact showing yourself up. This might lead to the Thai you are talking to trying to help you ‘save face’ by smiling and possibly even laughing to defuse the situation. For westerners in particular, there could probably not be a less appropriate reaction and often it serves to exasperate a situation. The results are often explosive. Rather than deal with the subtle intricacies of this aspect of culture, simply do not get angry – things will work themselves out much better if you can avoid it.

Drugs

Thailand takes drugs very seriously and is trying to eradicate unlawful drugs entirely. Don’t either partake or trade in illegal substances. Clubs and places of entertainment are sometimes raided and people made to put forward urine samples. If you test positive, penalties will be harsh. Trading in drugs will lead to the death penalty or likely decades in prison.

General

Kissing, cuddling and similar behaviour are frowned upon if in public – especially amongst older Thais. Younger Thais are unlikely to be as shocked, but to avoid their possible discomfort, avoid the behaviour.

Thais are generally shy people and few are likely to walk up to you and engage in conversation. If this happens, and the conversation moves towards the purchase of gems, gold, jewellery or other such items, beware. Every year people get caught up in purchases of items at entirely inflated prices that have little or no value because they are told they can sell these items at a profit in their home countries. Remember you are here on holiday – not here to make a fast buck. If something seems too good to be true – it is.

Smoking in the street is illegal – you can be fined 2,000 Baht.

Dropping litter in the street is illegal – the same fine applies.

Do not engage in purchase of wild animals whether protected or not. Aside from the moral issues, punishments are very harsh.

Koh Kuud in Trat

Koh Kuud is the second-largest island in the Koh Chang National Marine Park (around 130 square kilomtres), furthest from the mainland, and certainly one of the nicest islands in the group. Koh Kuud offers some excellent views;
coconut groves, rubber plantations, exquisite beaches, and it also has a number of beautiful waterfalls (3-tier Klong Jao of particular interest as is active all year round). Virtually all of Koh Kuud is unspoilt and what development there is has been well planned. The island has a number of excellent beaches on its west coast; Hap Tapho being probably the nicest, although Klong Yaikee beach, Tapo beach, Paol Bay, and Tadean Bay are also worthy of note. The waters around the island feature severl types of coral. 99% of the visitors who come to the island do so through an organised tour. As a result the island is not very well geared to receive independent travellers, although coming here alone is not impossible. The tours offer a number of options (three days / two nights, etc.) and usually include travel, food and accommodation. They usually involve trips to waterfalls and snorkelling trips as part of the package.

Koh Samet in Rayong

Koh Samet is one of Thailand’s nicest islands and has a unique place in Thai culture. It was here that Sunthorn Phu – Thailand’s greatest poetic – was inspired to create his masterpiece “Phra Aphaimani” – the story of a prince imprisoned in an undersea kingdom. Despite its place in literary history,
Koh Samet is these days more famed for its beauty and location – near enough to Bangkok to be a popular destination for weekend trips and far enough away from the capital to offer foreign tourists a chance to get away from it all. Koh Samet is part of the Khao-Laem-Yah Koh Samet National Park and as result enjoyed the protection of the National Parks Division. Although developed, the island is not overdeveloped and retains its charm.
The whole of Koh Samet is typified by glorious white sand, making the beaches excellent places to spend some time. There are 14 white beaches on the Island and surrounded by colourful reefs. Western Samet consists of long bays and shallow, crystal clear water. A series of paths link the bays… stray south and you come across a number of smaller, more secluded bays.
Of course, Samet has its fair share of diving and other water sports; the island has numerous outlets for canoeing, sailing windsurfing, snorkelling and, although technically illegal on the island, jet skiing. Those with an ecological perspective should avoid jet skis which are slowly eroding Koh Samet’s coral.
With so many foreigners coming to the island, a healthy nightlife has emerged, and although this is not Pattaya, it has elements of Pattaya… bars, restaurants… the works really but in less intense amounts!
How to get there: Ban Phe is the main exit from the mainland to Koh Samet ., Boats leave Ban Phe regularly 06:00 to 17.00 with increased frequency at the weekends. Boats cost around 30 Baht. If you want some privacy, a charted boat with costs anything from 800-3,000 Baht per day.
Details: As with all National Parks, admission to Koh Samet comes with a 200 Baht entry fee – 100 Baht for the under 14s.

Hua Hin in Prachuap Khiri Khan

Hua Hin Beach is the focal point of Hua Hin – Thailand’s first beach resort. Although it has a beautiful white sand beach and crystal clear water, Hua Hin is not as famous as resort towns like Pattaya and is still a bit off the beaten track as far as foreign tourists are concerned. As a result the beach is generally not so crowded,
except at weekends when locals from Bangkok make the 190 kilometer journey to descend on the area. It is though increasingly the destination of choice for foreign visitors interested in water sports. The beach is about six kilometers long and features a particularly good sunrise, and nice sunsets. Dotted along the beach are some great restaurants where you can enjoy local seafood. The beach does though cater for a growing expatriate community and the area hosts an increasing number of foreign restaurants and bars.
Details: Between March and August the water doesn’t come up the beach as far as it does at other times in the year and there are a greater number of beach-based activities (such as horse riding) available. During the rainy season there are quite a few jelly fish and this can lead to a slightly stinging sensation while you are in the water. Avoid jelly fish at all costs! All year round water sports such as jet skiing are readily available.
How to get there: Hua Hin Beach is only a short distance from Hua Hin town centre and Songtaews are available for around 20 Baht to 30 Baht.

Karon Beach is another exquisite Phuket beach. This is pretty much a stereotypical image of paradise – long beach, sand dunes, and palm trees alongside crystal clear water! Surprisingly, Karon Beach offers even more…
Unlike some of the other beaches on the island, Karon is not overdeveloped. Over the last few years a number of hotels and restaurants have emerged, but there are still large areas of open land that have not been built on. To make life simple, there is a paved walkway with lighting that runs parallel to the beach and gives easy access to the hotels behind. The whole thing gives the beach a uniquely pleasant ‘homely’ feel. The usual bars, souvenir shops and tailors that might appear elsewhere have been kept away from the beachfront and assigned to the road coming inwards from the main road. This has become a pretty lively area with trendy bars competing with restaurants offering a variety of cuisines. Karon is one of the few beaches where weather conditions permit surfing and great breakers come to shore from June to September. You really should be an experienced surfer to try these waves, but surfboards are available for hire from the beach anyway!
How to get there: Songtaews run from Ranong Road in Phuket town to Karon Beach on a regular basis. A fare is 20 Baht per person – clearly the easiest and most effective way to get there.

Hat Kalim Beach in Phuket

Hat Kalim Beach is a quiet, attractive area that is far enough away to be away from it all, yet still close enough to the action to be fun. It is a small beach littered with rocks situated north of Patong Beach (Hat Kalim is actually a continuation of Patong and the beaches are separated by a rock formation going into the sea).
The sea around the Hat Kalim offers excellent coral reefs making it attractive to people who like snorkeling and diving. When the tide is out a substantial amount of coral is revealed and it can be interesting to wander around to see the variety of living creatures the coral maintains (starfish, etc.). Don’t try to walk amongst the coral with bare feet – you WILL get cut! Not as developed as other beaches in Phuket, Hat Kalim is substantially more laid back - you can actually get some space to yourself on this beach. At the back of the beach is a solid range of accommodation including reasonably priced hotels and guesthouses.
How to get there: Hat Kalim Beach is a short distance from Patong. Songtaews leave regularly to Patong from the market in Phuket and cost 20 Baht per person – easily the most effective way of getting to the area.

Cha-am Beach in Phetchaburi

Cha-am Beach is renowned for being the best beach in Phetchaburi. Cha-am’s fame was established when it’s neighbour Hua Hin became a royal resort and members of the royal family commented that Cha-am was just as beautiful.
As a result, Cha-am has become a firm favourite with weekend visitors from Bangkok, and is becoming increasingly popular with international visitors keen on experiencing a genuinely Thai resort town. There’s a complete absence of bars along the beach – local bylaws won’t permit them. There are though numerous hotels and restaurants dotted about the 3 kilometre long beach and it’ easy to pick up a place to rest in a deckchair under an umbrella. You can get a donkey ride if you want one and it is possible to rent bicycles to explore the area. There are also herds of food stalls selling excellent snacks. Cha-am is remarkable in that it is unremarkable – this is a pleasant beach with green water – and that’s about it. Cha-am is not ‘in your face’ and that can make a genuine change and probably what is making it more attractive to foreigners.
How to get there: This beach is only about 1 kilometre east of Cha-am and easily accessible by Tuk-Tuk (30 Baht) and Songtaew (10 Baht) from the town’s bus station.

Railay Beach is about ten minutes from Ao Nang by boat. The beach is a genuinely superb location with golden sand against a limestone cliff backdrop. There is a gentle atmosphere on Railay; absent are bars competing against each other with techno music. As such, the site has become a destination of choice for people trying to avoid crowds in Ao Nang and Phi-Phi. Given that’s its chief attraction, more and more people are frequenting the beach,
and it’s only a matter of time until Railay Beach becomes equally as busy! Amongst other activities, Railay is famous for its rock climbing. Climbing courses have been available in the area for over ten years and the instructors available are some of the best in the country. The cliff tops offer tremendous views of Railay Bay and surrounding areas. They are also an ideal location to watch the beautiful sunsets the beach offers.
How to get there: It takes 30 minutes from Chao Fa pier in Krabi Town to get to Railay Beach by long tail boat. Long tails are also available from Ao Nam. Boats cost no more than 50 or 60 Baht per person per trip.

Originally a fishing village, Ao Nang is now a major city beach resort and a travel destination in its own right catering for the full range of foreign tourists. Ao Nang’s chief feature is a long white sand beach set against crystal clear water, but people also come here for a full range of activities such as diving,
kayaking and trekking. Less developed than other beaches in Thailand, Ao Nang none the less offers guesthouses and hotels that fit any budget. The beach enjoys a vibrant nightlife which includes excellent seafood restaurants dotted along the beach and some bars that offer live music. However, this is not an ‘expat’ type scene oppressive numbers of go-go bars, etc. It has a much nicer feel and is a good choice for families. Ao Nang has numerous agencies were it is possible to arrange trips to attractions and activities available in the vicinity. Bird watching is a favourite in the area, as are jungle treks and boats to neighboring islands. Diving is another popular draw and again agencies in the area arrange dives for all levels. They also offer liveaboard trips that take in the local islands. Day trips are relatively inexpensive, but ask around for the most reliable places and shop around for the best deals. Despite everything on offer, Ao Nang is quite a small beach and can get crowded.
How to get there: A taxi from the airport will cost around 500 Baht. Long tail boats run seasonally and cost around 50 baht from Krabi to Ao Nang. Songteaws from Krabi cost 20 Baht during the day and 50 Baht after 18:00

Thailand’s islands and beaches are the destinations of choice for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year. Thailand is blessed with natural beauty and its islands are amongst the most scenic and beautiful in the world. Kamphaeng Phet Province

Kamphaeng Phet (Thai กำแพงเพชร) is one of the provinces (changwat) of Thailand, located in the north of the country. Neighboring provinces are (from north clockwise) Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Phichit, Nakhon Sawan and Tak.

Etymology

The word Kamphaeng means Wall, and the word Phet from Sanskrit Vajra meaning diamond (or weapon of Indra). Hence the name of the province literally means Diamond Wall.

Geography

The main river of the province is the Ping, one of the sources of the Chao Phraya river. River flats make up much of the east of the province, while the west is mostly mountains covered with forests.

One of the most well-known products of the province is banana. Banana festivals take place in the province every year, to thank the gods for the harvest.

Administrative divisions

The province is subdivided in 11 districts (amphoe). These are further subdivided into 78 subdistricts (tambon) and 823 villages (muban).

Sights

Kamphaeng Phet National Museum (พิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติกำแพงเพชร), located on Pindamri Road in Mueang district, houses ancient objects and other antique arts articles from various eras found in the provincial town. These include sculptured and earthen designs, heads of Buddha statues, traditional celadon products, sculptures of demons and celestial and human beings used to decorate Chedi bases or Vihans.

Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park is an archeological site in Kamphaeng Phet, Thailand. Along with Sukhothai Historical Park and Si Satchanalai historical park, it is a part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Historic Town of Sukhothai and Associated Historic Towns. Major features in the Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park include archaeological remains of ancient sites such as Mueang Chakangrao to the east of the Ping River, Mueang Nakhon Chum to the west and Mueang Trai Trueng some 18 km from the town to the southwest.

Kamphaeng Phet Province Museum (พิพิธภัณฑสถานจังหวัดกำแพงเพชร เฉลิมพระเกียรติ) nearby is made up of groups of Central Region applied architectural style structures. There are exhibitions on the local history with replicas of the city, lifestyle and urban and hill tribal customs and traditions.

Mueang Nakhon Chum (เมืองนครชุม) is an ancient town on the west bank of the Ping River. Its 2-3 metre-high earthen walls run along the waterway. It is in this area that the famous religious tablets of Kamphaeng Phet have been discovered. Within the city walls are a couple of ancient sites such as the Kamphaeng Pom Thung Sethi (กำแพงป้อมทุ่งเศรษฐี) located on Phahonyothin Road just before entering the town. It is part of the laterite fortifications 83 metres long and 6 metres tall.

Wat Phra Borom That (วัดพระบรมธาตุ) is a temple situated in the centre of Mueang Nakhon Chum featuring a Burmese-style Chedi. To the south is an Ubosot housing several Sukhothai- and Ayutthaya-style bronze Buddha statues. The Chedi itself is believed to originally have been a Sukhothai-type structure, its style having been altered during a restoration work financed by a wealthy Burmese about a century ago. Another ancient town is Mueang Trai Trueng. It was built by King Chaisiri of Chiang Rai who fled invading enemy in 1542 B.E. (circa 999). Today most of the structures are in disrepair with only ruins of Chedis and ramparts. The town is about 18 km from Kamphaeng Phet on the Kamphaeng Phet-Khlong Lan road.

The Kamphaeng Phet Mini Banana Festival
This is another traditional festival, organized to promote and publicize architectural productivity, namely, "Kluay Khai" (mini banana),which has brought fame to Kamphaeng Phet decides celebrating the festival, competition of ceremonious preparations of a kind of traditional food called "Khao Kraythip" and "Khao Krayasat" are arranged during the period of September and October.

Talat Kluai Khai (ตลาดกล้วยไข่) is on the Kamphaeng Phet-Nakhon Sawan highway at Km.343. Scores of roadside stalls display and sell both raw and ripe Kluai Khai (a type of bananas).

Phra Ruang Hot Spring ( Bueng Sap) (บ่อน้ำพุร้อนพระร่วง (บึงสาบ) is located at Mu 3, Tambon Lan Dok Mai, 13 km from Kamphaeng Phet, 12 km on the left side off Highway No. 101. The 5 spots of hot spring naturally took place from under the ground. The temperature is approximately 50-65 °C. From a test of the Ministry of Public Health, there is neither contamination nor diseases, which are too harmful in accordance with the standard.

Khlong Lan National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติคลองลาน) covers an area of some 300 km² over mountain ranges to the west of the province. The highest peak is about 1,400 metres. Of mainly virgin jungles, it is the source of several streams which flow into the Ping River. The park headquarters is near the Khlong Lan waterfall, about 60 km from town. Attractions within the park include the 95-metre high Khlong Lan Fall with scenic surroundings, and the Khlong Nam Lai Fall (น้ำตกคลองน้ำไหล), a 9-level cascade and located off Highway no.1117 at Km. 35 and 10 km further on). The Kaeng Ko Roi (แก่งเกาะร้อย) (off Highway No.1117 at Pong Nam Ron intersection) is a group of rock formations jutting out of the stream looking somewhat like all islands.

Mae Wong National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติแม่วงก์) forms the border between Kamphaeng Phet and Nakhon Sawan and covers an area of about 894 square km. Most of the land is rich in various types of plants. Along the Khlong Lan -Umphang route passing through the park's area, which leads up to the mountains, are several viewing points between km 81 to 115. At Km. 102 is a beautiful road-side waterfall. Other falls within the park include the Mae Krasa (น้ำตกแม่กระสา), Mae Liwa (น้ำตกแม่ลีวา) and others.

Khlong Wang Chao National Park (อุทยานแห่งชาติคลองวังเจ้า) is located in King Amphoe Kosamphi Nakhon, 43 km from Kamphaeng Phet. This is an abundant forest with a density of naturally growing teak and beautiful waterfalls. Nearby the park, there is a hill tribe village.

Local Products

Kluai Khai (mini banana) is a famous produce of this province. Raw and ripe bananas as well as other local produces such as sticky paste (made of rice, bean, sesame and sugar)

Culture

Festivals

The Nop Phra Len Phleng Fair (งานนบพระเล่นเพลง) is held during the celebrations of Makha Bucha (around February). A tradition since the times of Sukhothai, it is described in the inscription stone found at Nakhon Chum of how processions were organised to pay homage to the town's major religious sites. The fair today consists of colorfully decorated parades of participants dressed in ancient attires crossing the Ping to pay homage to the Holy Relic on the Nakhon Chum side of the river.

Kluai Khai Fair (งานสารทไทยกล้วยไข่เมืองกำแพง) is held in September each year to promote the local banana for which the province is famous. There are banana contests and competitions on the making of Krayasat (a local sweet), as well as many entertainment performances.

Ayutthaya (อยุธยา), full name Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya (พระนครศรีอยุธยา), is an ancient capital and modern city in the Central Plains of Thailand, 85 km north of Bangkok.

Understand

Founded around 1350, Ayutthaya became the second capital of Siam after Sukhothai. Throughout the centuries, the ideal location between China, India and the Malay Archipelago made Ayutthaya the trading capital of Asia and even the world. By 1700 Ayutthaya had become the largest city in the world with a total of 1 million inhabitants. Many international merchants set sail for Ayutthaya, from diverse regions as the Arab world, China, India, Japan, Portugal, the Netherlands and France. Merchants from Europe proclaimed Ayutthaya as the finest city they had ever seen. Dutch and French maps of the city show grandeur with gold-laden palaces, large ceremonies and a huge float of trading vessels from all over the world. All this came to a quick end when the Burmese invaded Ayutthaya in 1767 and almost completely burnt the city down to the ground.

Today, only a few remains might give a glimpse of the impressive city they must have seen. Its remains are characterized by the prang (reliquary towers) and big monasteries. Most of the remains are temples and palaces, as those were the only buildings made of stone at that time. The great cultural value of Ayutthaya's ruins were officially recognized in 1991, when the Historic City became an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its proximity to Bangkok make it a popular day-trip destination for travelers from Bangkok.

Orientation

Ayutthaya is an island at the confluence of three rivers: the Chao Phraya river, the Lopburi river and the Pa Sak river. As the train station is at the east side off the island, most visitors will need to cross the river by ferry boat. Navigating your way around the island is not particularly hard: U Thong Rd is a ring road that circumvents the island completely. Most temple ruins can be found at the north-west of the island, while accommodation and nightlife is clustered around the north-east. As non-Siamese peoples were not allowed to live inside the city walls, the sights from foreign nations can be found outside of the island.

On the island

The temples with entry charges are usually in ruins, so there is no dress code, although visitors are still requested to refrain from blatant stupidity like clambering up the Buddha statues. Working temples tend to charge no fees and there are often no officials to check that a dress is appropriate (though it is advised to follow these customs to show respect for sacred places).

Headless Buddha statues, Wat Mahathat

Wat Phra Mahathat, Naresuan Rd (Across the road from Wat Ratburana). A large temple that was quite thoroughly ransacked by the Burmese. Several Leaning Prangs of Ayutthaya are still feebly defying gravity though, and the rows of headless Buddhas are atmospheric. This is also where you can spot the famous tree that has grown around a Buddha head. When taking pictures of you and the Buddha head, make sure you sit on your knees to show respect, as it is considered holy by Thais. 50 baht.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet, Sri Sanphet Rd. 8AM-6PM, daily. The largest temple in Ayutthaya, known for its distinctive row of restored chedis (Thai-style stupas) found on many images of the city. Housed within the grounds of the former royal palace, the temple was used only for royal religious ceremonies. It once housed a 16-meter Buddha covered with 340 kg of gold, but the Burmese set fire to the statue to melt the gold and destroyed the temple in the process. The royal palace can also be accessed from the same entrance at Wat Phra Si Sanphet, but it only has a few free standing buildings remaining. 50 baht.

Viharn Phra Mongkol Bopit, Sri Sanphet Rd (Next to Wat Phra Si Sanphet). An impressive building that houses a large bronze cast Buddha image. It was originally enshrined outside the Grand Palace to the east, but it was later transferred to the current location and covered with a Mondop. During the second fall of Ayutthaya, the building and the image were badly destroyed by fire. The building currently seen was renovated but does not have as beautiful craftsmanship as the previous ones. The open area east of the Sanctuary (Wihan) was formerly Sanam Luang, where the royal cremation ceremony took place.
Wat Ratchaburana, Naresuan Rd. This temple stands out for having a large prang recently restored to its original condition, clearly visible if you come in from the east. A major find of golden statues and other paraphernalia was made here in 1958, although much was subsequently stolen by robbers — the remnants are now in the Chao Sam Phraya Museum. You can climb inside the prang for nice views and a little exhibit. The mysterious staircase down, leads to two unrestored rooms with original paintings still visible on the walls. 30 baht.

Wiharn at Wat Thammikarat

Wat Thammikarat (วัดธรรมิกราช), U-Thong Rd. A working wat, but also contains the ruins of a large Chedi and a huge roofless Viharn which has tall brick columns leaning at alarming angles and a large tree growing picturesquely out of the side of one wall. It was already constructed before the establishment of Ayutthaya. The Wihan Luang once enshrined an enormous bronze head of the Buddha of the U Thong period, now exhibited at the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. The temple also houses a Reclining Buddha hall called Wihan Phra Phutthasaiyat built by his queen consort following her wish made for her daughter's recovery from an ailment. The Wihan is located to the north of Phra Chedi with a base of 52 surrounding Singha or lions, and houses a north-facing reclining Buddha image measuring 12 metres in length, with both feet gilded and inlaid with glass mosaic.
Wat Suwan Dararam, (Southeast of the island). This modern Wat with no ruins can be accessed by side streets off U-thong rd. The Wat contains a few small spires, and some nicely decorated modern buildings.
Phet Fortress, (Southeast of the island). This fortress was the city's most important defensive structure in the 15th century. Originally built of wood in 1350 A.D. by King Mahachakraphat, the fortress was later rebuilt with bricks. A few walls still remain and the grounds have a nice view of the river. The fortress is close to Wat Suwan Dararam, and is right beside a ferry that can take you to Wat Phanan Choeng.
Wat Phra Ram, Sri Sanphet Road. 8AM-6PM, daily. This temple consists of one huge prang and some smaller Chedi and outbuildings, all in disrepair though the top of the prang is complete. Staircases to the side of the prang give views of Ayutthaya. This monastery was located outside the grand palace compound to the east. King Ramesuan commanded it built on ground where the royal cremation ceremony for his father, King U-Thong, took place. A big lagoon is in front of this monastery. Its original name was "Nong Sano"; it was changed to "Bueng Phraram" and currently is Phraram Public Park.

Phra Chedi Suriyothai

Phra Chedi Suriyothai (เจดีย์พระศรีสุริโยทัย), U-Thong Rd. A white and gold coloured Chedi built as a memorial to a previous queen. Set in a small, well-kept gardens, it is the memorial for the first heroine in Siamese history. It's of some interest as a proof of the honour that ancient Siamese society gave to women. It was renovated in 1990, and during the renovations some antique objects were found such as a white rock crystal Buddha image in the posture of subduing Mara, a chedi replica, and a golden reliquary. These ancient objects were brought to be under the care of the Chao Sam Phraya National Museum
Wat Borom Phuttharam (วัดบรมพุทธาราม), (Inside Rajabhat University). Built some time during 1688–1703 during the reign of King Phetracha on his former residence area near the main gate of the southern city wall. Its location and area plan was confined to be in the north-south direction by ancient communication routes. Unlike other temples, the King had all buildings roofed with yellow glazed tiles and the temple became known as "Wat Krabueang Khlueap" or the "glazed tile temple". The construction took 2 years and the temple underwent a major renovation in the reign of King Borommakot, who had 3 pairs of door panels decorated with fine mother-of-pearl inlays. One pair of them is currently at Ho Phra Monthian Tham inside the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, the second is at Wat Benchamabophit (The Marble Temple), and the third was turned into cabinets and is now exhibited at the Bangkok National Museum.

Museums

Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre, Rojana Rd (Rotchana Rd), ☎ 035245124, 035245123. Interesting museum about the history of Ayutthaya. It's best to visit this museum before heading out elsewhere, as it places the remains into a historical perspective. A big part of the museum is dedicated to Siam's relations with other peoples, but village life, art and culture are also dealt with. 100 baht (foreigners).

Baan Hollanda. This museum is situated near the site of the Dutch lodge which was first built there in the 1630's. Baan Hollanda will open its doors in July 2011 and it aims at telling its audience about the Dutch settlement, how they worked, lived and interacted with Siamese society and court. The museum will provide informal learning by combining education with pleasure. The construction of the building has just been finished which means that the museum is one step closer to its opening!

Chao Sam Phraya National Museum. Most treasures of Ayutthaya were stolen, burnt and melted by armies or treasure hunters. Some pieces survived though and are exhibited at this museum. Most of the riches are golden statues found at Wat Ratchaburana and Wat Phra Mahathat.

Off the island

Much of Ayutthaya's history revolves around trade with other nations, but these nations were not allowed to set up camp inside the city walls. Thus, surrounding Ayutthaya's waters are plenty of remains from the countries that once set sail here, such as the settlements of Japan, the Netherlands and Portugal, as well as the interesting Thai-Chinese temple of Wat Phanan Choeng.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram, Southwest off the island on route 3413 (Take route 3263 off the island and turn left onto route 3413.). 8:30AM-5PM, daily. The temple that graces the official tourist pamphlet for Ayutthaya, this Wat is a must see. Many intact pagodas surround a central chedi that you can climb from all sides. A nice view of the city can be had from the top. Very photogenic. 50 baht. edit

Wat Na Phra Mane. This Wat offers a mix of old and modern buildings. It is unique because it survived the destruction of the city in the 18th century. Of interest are the vaulted ceilings and a Buddha made of black stone edit

Wat Phanan Choeng (วัดพนัญเชิงวรวิหาร)), Bang Pa-in Rd (About 2 km southeast of town, turn south at the road 309 roundabout). 8:30AM-5PM, daily. A working monastery located south of Ayutthaya, no one knows how old it is, but it existed before Ayutthaya was founded as the capital. It contains the oldest large cast bronze Buddha image in Ayutthaya, called "Phrachao Phananchoeng", built in A.D. 1325; it is made of stucco in the attitude of subduing evil. A small room to the right of the main hall contains a nice collection of Buddha images and the room is painted with many individual unique pictures, in bright colours offset with gold. 20 baht donation. edit

Chedi at Wat Phu Khao Thong

Wat Phu Khao Thong, (About 3 km north of town, west off the Ang Thong Rd). Impressive and huge white, and slightly wonky, chedi set in a big field. You can climb to the top for extensive views over the countryside surrounding Ayutthaya, although the modern town and power lines obscure much of the historic city on the horizon. The actual nearby temple is still working and has small grounds with a smiling fat buddha image set in the ruins of a small viharn. You will see the 'Monument of King Naresuan the Great' on the way. Wat Yai Chaimongkon (ดใหญ่ชัยมงคล หรือ วัดเจ้าพระยาไท), Bang Pa-in Rd (1 km east of Wat Phananchoeng). 8PM-6PM, daily. The large pagoda from far away, and some it's ruins appear on well known photos of temples in Thailand. Constructed in the reign of King U-Thong, the temple features a large reclining Buddha in saffron robes in its own ruined wiharn, and, most spectacularly, a huge chedi swathed in golden cloth set in a courtyard which is lined by Buddha images all wearing saffron robes. Very photogenic 20 baht.

Foreign Settlements

Dutch Settlement. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) founded in 1602 was the largest and most impressive of the early modern trading companies operating in Asia. The Dutch established their first trading post in Ayutthaya in 1608. By the 1630s the Dutch received land and permission to build a lodge on the east bank of the Chaophraya river. The two-storey brick building was known to the Dutch as de logie and the settlement developed into a separate village. This building was destroyed by the invading Burmese armies in 1767. After being archaelogically excavated, the brick foundation of the building was found and during the celebrations of 400 years of Thai-Dutch relations, H.M. Queen Beatrix donated a royal gift to establish an information centre near the site of the Dutch lodge. The Thai Fine Arts Department excavated the site and found many artifacts, such as Chinese porcelain, Dutch pipes and a coin. The construction of the museum began in 2010 and has just been finished (April 2011). 'Baan Hollanda' museum will open in July 2011. (more information in the 'Museums' section)

Japanese Settlement. There's nothing left of the Japanese Settlement, so instead, the Japanese government decided to create a Japanese-style park at the location of where the Japanese Settlement probably must have been. The Ayutthaya Historical Study Centre started a branch here, a museum about Ayutthaya's foreign relations with Japan and other countries. It starts with an interesting film lasting about 15 minutes and then you can explore the museum on your own: very interesting and definitely gives a good background of the city's history.

Chao Phrom Market. Located next to the Pasak River on U-Thong Rd., this market offers food, clothing, and day to day necessities at a variety of shops and stalls. More for locals, the market lacks the usually touristy trinkets; however, the food is fantastic, good clothing deals can be found, and the visit may be of interest for those who wish to experience a more authentic Thai marketplace. There are several night markets with many street hawkers selling a range of food and some stalls with clothing, phones and more.

Eat

Boat noodle, (In front of telephone authority building and (2nd location) opposite Sri Nakharin Park along U-Thong Road.). Original boat noodle was cooked on a boat. It's noodles and soup with meat and vegetables. They are served in a little bowl and most people would eat more than one to relieve their hunger. 10 baht per bowl.

Malakor, Chee Kun Rd (Opposite Wat Ratchaburana). Reasonably priced restaurant with great views of Wat Ratchaburana and very good food. Meat in most dishes can be substituted by tofu. Patrons have the choice of eating indoors or on the balcony. Also available is some of Ayutthaya's best coffee. Most mains 45-60 baht.

Roti Saimai, U-Thong Road and Si Sanphet Road junction (Opposite Phra Nakorn Si Ayutthaya Hospital). Roti Saimai is a Thai-style candy floss wrapped in a roti - a very popular local dessert.

Siam Restaurant, Chee Kun Rd. Serves unremarkable Thai and Vietnamese food, but makes up for it with an excellent location with views of Wat Mahathat as you eat, air conditioning, and possibly the best toilets in the city. Most mains 50-100 baht.

Vegetarian Restaurant, Khlong Makham Rieng Rd (50 metres south from the junction with Naresuan Rd). early-2PM, daily. One of the usual Thai rahn a-hahn jair. With 8 different meals available and side orders of gluten and gluten. 15-25 baht.

The usual excellent night market fare is also available, ask your guesthouse for the most recent night market locations. At the same time, you may wish to ask some advice on what to order if you don't speak any Thai.

Drink

Wat Yai Coffee, (Road 3477, 2 minutes south after the roundabout from the center). Nice small coffee joint, served by the staff who are friendly (and a bit shy to foreigners). B25-45.

The main traveller oriented area is Soi Torgorsor, between Pamaphrao Road and Naresuan Road opposite the western end of Chao Phrom Market. It has a number of bars staying open until late, some with projection screens for sports.

Street Lamp, Soi Torgorsor. Street Lamp offers wooden seating spilling into the street in front of the attached guest house. Live music in the evenings is provided by the charismatic Mr Noi playing his way through rock classics in a gravelly faux-American accent and inviting members of the audience to join in.
Jazz Bar, Soi Torgorsor. Shares a food menu with Chang House next door but offers a better soundtrack. When the jazz band aren't playing the instruments are pick-up-and-play, or you might find yourself dodging insulting trivia questions thrown at you by the staff.

Sleep

There are a large number of traveller-oriented guesthouses on and around Soi 2 between Naresuan Road and Pamaphrao Road, opposite the western end of the Chao Phrom Market. Accommodation in the upper price brackets is limited though there are some options by the riverside. Many people choose to day-trip from Bangkok.

Budget

Ayutthaya Guest House. A friendly place offering all en-suite rooms. With internet access and a 'order what you like' restaurant. The three 300 baht rooms along the side alley have air vents open to a public restaurant next-door. For budget travellers, they offer in a nearby building some rooms for 100 baht each, neat, friendly doubles with fan. air-con with TV for 400 baht, fan-only with TV for 300 baht.

BJ Guesthouse, [3]. Right before (diagobally opposite) P-U Guest House. Old Thai House, backpacker atmosphere with basic and clean single/double rooms. One big room with air-con and private bathroom. The owner (Sato) is very relaxed and helpful. Bike rental and thai meals available. Double room (fan): 200 baht.

The Lima Place, 139 Moo 2 Bankao Ayutthaya (1.5 km from Ayutthaya Railway Station), ☎ 086 8892389, [4]. checkin: 14.00; checkout: 12.00. The hotel has 75 rooms. Prices are 562/618 baht net for air conditioning king/twin bed, and for electric fan equipped room king/twin bed 450/506 baht net. [5]

Mint Guest House. Located within the alley right in front of the train station. Clean rooms with fan and a separate washroom. Plus points; its within sight of the train station and night market manned by a friendly, jovial owner. It's a bit off the main attractions but motorbikes can be rented out for a mere 150 baht a day. 200 baht.

P-U Guest House. Despite its name, the place provides very clean rooms for a decent rate (~500 Baht for twin with fan and private bath, some knowledge of Thai may net you a small discount). It's hidden off Soi Torgorsor, keep walking north until you see the P-U sign on the left, it's at the end of the small lane. Well worth a look but this is one of the most expensive as it is the best on Soi Torgosor. Free WIFI too. 250-600 baht. edit

Sherwood House (known to locals as the MM Pool), 1/25 Dechawut Road, Ayutthaya, ☎ 086-6660813, [6]. Well located in the heart of downtown, this cozy guesthouse has five rooms and a free swimming pool. Located right around the corner from a food fair and walking distance from the on-island ruins. The house has a decent restaurant offering both Thai food and Western food, and bicycle rentals. Fan double 290 baht, Air-con double 390. Shared bathroom. Free wifi.

Thong Chai Guest House, (On a road directly opposite Wat Ratchaburana). A little away from the main action, but closer to the sights, this guesthouse offering fan-only rooms at 200 baht a night with private bathrooms, this is a more Thai-oriented guest house. Watch out, this is maybe too basic for you. Compared to what you get in Bangkok for 200 baht this is worse: no place to hang up the towel. You get a soap, but there is no place to put it in the bathroom. No sink: You can't wash your stuff. No flush (this is indeed Thai style). 200 baht.

Get out

Most visitors get out the way they came — from Bangkok. But there are a number of other interesting next stops in the area:

Bang Pa-In — famous for its eccentric palace and only 20 km to the south
Kanchanaburi — the famous Bridge over the River Kwai and numerous World War II museums
Khao Yai National Park — first and largest national park of the country
Lopburi — the next destination if you take the train north, with monkeys and ancient ruins
Nakhon Ratchasima — gateway to the Isaan region
Sukhothai — another former capital of Siam with impressive ancient ruins

Ayutthaya World Heritage and Red Cross Fair

Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, in collaboration with the relevant government agencies, private sector, and people of Ayutthaya, have organised the Fair to celebrate the “World Heritage City” every year under the name of “Ayutthaya World

Heritage”. The Fair will also include a Red Cross Fair, in which, this year, will take place during 10 – 19 December, 2010, at Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Historical Park under the name of “Ayutthaya World Heritage and Red Cross Fair 2010”. The fair features the following activities:
1. Inviting the Buddha’s relic to the merit making ceremony called
Thaksinanupathan, in which offerings are made to monks on behalf of the deceased, at Wat Mahathat on 6 December, 2010.
2. Light and sound show and the reproduced atmosphere of the Ayutthaya
Kingdom period.
The light and sound show at Wat Mahathat will depict the history of the Ayutthaya Kingdom period of 417 years. This year, Phranakhon Si Ayutthaya Rajabhat University will be responsible for the performance’s production, which will deploy at least 350 – 400 performers. The audience will admire the talent of elephants in the different scenes. Each round of the show has a capacity of 2,500 seats. The show will be offered twice a day on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and once a day on Monday to Thursday.
The reproduced atmosphere of the Ayutthaya Kingdom period fair will be provided for people to enjoy before seeing the light and sound show at Wat Mahathat. This year, there are activities of “San Sin Thin Moradok Lok” between 16.00 – 21.00 hrs. at Wat Langkha Khao.
The acitivities feature:
- The reproduced atmosphere of a retro market that will showcase a market
with vendors wearing the old Ayutthaya style clothing and the use of ancient coins (Phot Duang) in exchange for Thai food and desserts.
- Floating market will be a reproduction of the Thai’s way of life along the
river featuring the trading of goods where visitors can participate in the activities by buying goods and tasting food sold from the boats.

- “San Sin Thin Ahan Thai” (Inherit the arts of local Thai food) activities: There
are cooking contests of Thai food (main dishes and desserts) and auspicious food in various categories; for example, a contest of making spicy sauce, cooking tamarind flavoured soup (Kaeng Som), in which the contestants will come from food shops, restaurants, and hotels in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province. The winner on each day will receive a plaque and a certificate.
- The reproduced atmosphere of a retro show – watching and eating is a
creation of virtual reality offering visitors to participate in the activities by eating like in ancient times; for example, sit-down eating on an old-style-wooden seat with a set of ancient food, which is rare to find, with female court servants providing services. Visitors, particularly, can enjoy food from the winner of the cooking contest, which this could be a motivation for participants, both Thai and foreigners, to taste the authentic food cooked by the people of Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya.
- “San Sin Thin Dontri Thai” (Inherit the arts of Thai music) activities: The
competition of the Thai country contemporary bands to win the trophy awarded by H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn.
This will be a presentation of the contemporary Thai country bands competition by applying Thai musical instruments or folk musical instruments with Western musical instruments to play country music in a contemporary style; the bands will play country songs that contain melodies from the original Thai traditional songs combined with a solo to show the talents and professionalism of the musicians on Thai and international musical instruments, which are subtle and witty, resulting in creatively beautiful works played all together that lead to the motivation and inspiration to the participants to realise the importance of Thai arts and cultural conservation.
3. Floating market activities.
At the venue, the area of Bueng Phra Ram is a swamp which is suitable for
a floating market atmosphere to lure visitors to buy food, desserts, and fruits offered by vendors who sell food from the boats; such as, stir-fried Thai noodles (Phat Thai), boat noodles, deep-fried meat balls, old-style coffee, peeled and chopped sugar cane, water chestnuts, and boiled sweet potatoes.
4. Main stage performances.
For all ten nights of the Fair, the performances on the main stage include
folk music performances, singing contests, which are opened for subdistrict and village headmen, members of the local administration organisations, students, and general public, a beauty pageant of the Old Capital under the concept of “Strict dad and pretty daughter”, an elephant beauty pageant, and a cotton loincloth or Pha Khao Ma fashion show.
For the elephant beauty pageant, before the contest, all contestants will be educated on health issues including eating, exercise, and how to keep healthy for overweight persons.
For the beauty pageant of the Old Capital (Strict dad and pretty daughter), the contest aims to promote the family institution and offer a shared activity between father and daughter. Last year, the beauty pageant was held under the concept of “Young looking mom and pretty daughter”.
5. The showcase and sales of local wisdom products “OTOP”.
There will be community products of the province (OTOP) from 16 districts
to sell to visitors including the highlighted products of other surrounding provinces, which will be displayed and sold.
6. The festival of Ayutthaya’s delicious foods.
The best foods and desserts in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province from
various hotels in town or from the best restaurants of each district will be offered in the festival.
7. Red Cross Fair.
The provincial Red Cross has organized activities of Red Cross booths,
and Red Cross drawing tickets to raise funds for the province’s charity activities.
8. A trolley riding service.
Since the area of the Fair around Bueng Phra Ram covers an extensive
space, visitors, who are interested in seeing around the area, can be facilitated with a trolley riding service.

Snakebird Watching Festival

The darters or snakebirds are mainly tropical waterbirds in the family Anhingidae. There are four living species, three of which are very common and widespread while the fourth is rarer and classified as near-threatened by the IUCN. The term “snakebird” is usually used without any additions to signify whichever of the completely allopatric species occurs in any one region.

The Songkran festival is celebrated in Thailand as the traditional New Year’s Day from 13 to 15 April.

It coincides with the New Year of many calendars of South and Southeast Asia. Of all the feasts and festivals in Thailand, which are many,
the Songkran Festival is the most striking, for it is widely observed not only in this country but also in Burma, Cambodia and the Lao State.

Songkran has traditionally been celebrated as the New Year for many centuries, and is believed to have been adapted from an Indian festival. It is now observed nationwide, even in the far south. However, the most famous Songkran celebrations are still in the northern city of Chiang Mai, where it continues for six days and even longer. It has also become a party for foreigners and an additional reason for many to visit Thailand for immersion in another culture.
