Padmashri Parshuram Gangavane: The Torchbearer of Tradition

Parshuram Gangavane, fondly known as the “Guardian of Chitrakathi,” has dedicated his life to reviving and preserving the ancient art forms of the Thakar tribal community. In 2021, his lifelong contribution to Indian folk arts was honored with the prestigious Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.

For over four decades, Gangavane has been passionately working to keep alive the Chitrakathi art, a unique storytelling tradition using hand-painted scrolls, wooden puppetry, and folk theatre. Through his efforts, many endangered art forms such as Dashavatara shadow puppetry, Lokrang, and Bhajan Mandalis have found new life.

Shri Parshuram Vishram Gangavane has been tenaciously preserving and promoting the traditional art forms of the Adivasi Thakar Tribe since 1975.

Born on June 1, 1956, to the tribal family of Gangavanes in Kudal; he has learnt over ten traditional arts from his father, Vishram Gangavane. These include Chitrakathi, Kalsutri Bahulya, Leather Puppets, Pangul Bael, Powada, Gondhal, Radhanrutya, and six more traditional art forms of the Thakars.

In 2006, the community at Pinguli under his leadership set up a “Thakar Adivasi Kala Aangan” (TAKA) Museum & Art Gallery depicting the 500 Years old traditional objects and puppets of the Thakar culture and has since been visited by both local and foreign tourists. A school is working to teach both women and men of the community to paint the traditional Chitrakathi,(tradition of storytelling through paintings & music)through which they preserve the Thakar art forms. The Vishram Thakar Adivasi Kala Aangan Charitable Trust owns a museum and an art gallery at Pinguli, Maharashtra; incidentally this museum was built in Shri Parshuram’s cow shed. Through this trust and the support of other like-minded artisans and his sons Eknath and Chetan, Shri Parshuram has hosted many HIV Aids awareness,Beti Bachao, Vyasan Mukti, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,Health Awarness programs, covid 19 awarness performances through Kalsutri Bahuli (string puppets) in many villages of Maharashtra. Through the Kala Angan Museum Shri Parshuram also promotes the tribal traditions amongst the Thakar youth who have currently moved to other fields and occupations.

Shri Gangavane is the recipient of numerous awards and honours that acknowledged his efforts in preserving folk traditions for the last four decades. He was honored with State Award for Nasha Bandhi Abhiyan awareness through String Puppetry. He was also honored with Sindhudurg Tourist Friend Award for his work to promote CulturalTourism in Sindhudurg Tourism District. He was nominated as a Guru under the Guru Shishya Parampara initiated by the Indian Ministry of Culture and has since conducted 8 Learning programs with over 150 graduates. He has also travelled in various states of India to perform String Puppetry & Chitrakathi in Government Cultural Festivals. He has additionally conducted and participated in more than 100 workshops across the country to promote and share the lessons about his tribal art.

His contribution to society through the conservation and promotion of his art form is unparalleled and he hopes to empower his community by nurturing the traditional art forms for future generations.

एके दिवशी, द्वारकाधिश श्रीकृष्ण (भगवान श्री विष्णु) एकटे असताना, त्यांना मथुरेतील दिवसांची आठवण होते. त्यांना आठवतात त्या गोप-गोपिका आणि राधा. जरी ती मृत होती तरी, त्यांनी स्वतःच्या दिव्य शक्तींनी तिला पुन्हा जिवंत करून स्वतःजवळ स्थानापन्न केले. तेव्हाच रूक्मिणी कक्षात आली, आणि राधाने उभे न राहून त्यांचा निरादर केल्याने रूक्मिणीने रागाने द्वारका सोडली व दिंडीरवनात अज्ञातवासात आली. नंतर भगवान श्री विष्णु तिच्या शोधार्थ प्रथम मथुरा नंतर गोकूळला गेले, गोपाळांना भेटले. मग त्यांनीही शोध सुरू केला. ते शोधार्थ गोवर्धन पर्वतावर गेले. शेवटी ते भीमा (किंवा चंद्रभागा) नदीतिराजवळ आले. सोबत असलेल्या गोपाळांना 'गोपाळपूर' येथे सोडून स्वतः दिंडीरवन जंगलात तिच्या शोधार्थ निघाले. आणि तिथे रूक्मिणी सापडल्यावर, तिचा राग शांत केला. नंतर रूक्मिणीसह तेथेच असलेल्या पुंडलिकाच्या आश्रमात आले. पण तेव्हा भक्त पुंडलिक आपल्या आई-वडिलांची सेवा करीत होता. जरी त्याला माहित झाले, की भगवान श्री विष्णु स्वतः भेटायला आले आहेत, तरी आई-वडिलांच्या सेवेसमोर त्याने तात्काळ भेटण्याचे नाकारून एक वीट त्यांच्याजवळ फेकली, त्यावर उभे राहण्यासाठी. पुंडलिकाची आपल्या आई-वडिलांविषयीची श्रद्धा पाहून भगवान श्री विष्णुने विलंबाची पर्वा केली नाही. विटेवर उभे राहून पुंडलिकाची वाट पाहिली. नंतर पुंडलिकाने देवाची क्षमा मागून अशी विनंती केली की, त्यांनी भक्तांसाठी तेथेच असावे. आणि भगवान श्री विष्णुने तसे वरदान दिले. तेव्हापासून भगवान श्री विष्णु आहेत विठ्ठल या अवतारात! विठ्ठल म्हणजे असा जो विटेवर उभा आहे. आम्ही भक्त पुंडलिक व देव विठ्ठल यांची विठेची कथा पारंपारीक लोककला चित्रकथी च्या माध्यमातुन दाखविलेले आहेत. हे चित्र भारतातील एका संग्रहालयाला आम्ही तयार करुन दिलेले आहे. देव दिसे ठाई ठाई, भक्तलीन भक्तापाई सुखालाही आला या हो आनंदाचा पूर चालला नामाचा गजर| अवघे गरजे पंढरपूर|| आषाढी एकादशीच्या सर्वाना मंगलमय शुभेच्छा Artist- Mr. Eknath Parshuram Gangavane

आदिम, आदिवासी जमातीची संस्कृती कला म्हणजे अनमोल असा ठेवा आहे. भारतीयांना अभिमान वाटावा अशा काही कला आहेत; पण त्याचे जतन, संवर्धन याबाबत फार मोठा प्रश्न उभा आहे. परंतु पिंगुळी गावातील आदिवासी ठाकर समाजाची चित्रकथी ही कला जाणीवपूर्वक जोपासण्याचे कार्य गेली कित्येक र्वष परशुराम गंगावणे करीत आहेत आणि तोच वारसा त्यांचे चिरंजीव चेतन गंगावणे पुढे नेत आहेत.

रामायण, महाभारतातील पौराणिक कथांवर आधारलेली चित्रे दिव्यासमोर आणून संवादानुसार ती पात्रे चक्क बोलू लागतात. आजच्या थ्रीडी चित्रांप्रमाणे चित्रकथेचे चित्रपट जणू साकार होते.

दोन-अडीच हजार लोकसंख्या असलेल्या पिंगुळी गावात सुमारे १०० घरे आहेत. राधा नृत्य, पोतराज, गोंधळ, चित्रकथी, पोवाडा, स्त्रियांचे पारंपरिक खेळ यासारखे अकरा लोककला प्रकार पूर्वीपासून चालत आले आहेत. पूर्वी काष्ठ शिल्पे, बाहुल्या आदी विशिष्ट कलेची निर्मिती केली जायची; परंतु परशुराम गंगावणे यांनी सुमारे अडीचशे चित्रे जतन केली आहेत. म्हणूनच सरकारने दखल घेत दक्षिण- मध्य सांस्कृतिक समितीवर त्यांची नियुक्ती केली.

त्या माध्यमातून देशभरातील आदिवासी चित्रकारांच्या कलाकृतींचे मूल्यांकन करण्याचे काम त्यांनी केले आहे. पिंगुळी गावात ‘ठाकर आदिवासी कलांगण’ स्थापन केले त्यावेळी ज्येष्ठ रंगकर्मी प्रभाकर पणशीकर आणि विजया मेहता हे मान्यवर आले होते. ठाकर आदिवासी समाजाचा गौरवशाली इतिहास शिवकाळाशी निगडित आहे. शिवाजी महाराजांच्या दरबारी आश्रय दिला जाई.

प्राचीन काळी कुडाळ येथील देवीच्या देवळात नवरात्रात नऊ दिवस कार्यक्रम होत असत. शिवाजी महाराजांनंतर मात्र या समाजाचा आश्रय गेला. पुढे सावंतवाडी संस्थानचे राजेसाहेबांनी या कलांना मदत दिली होती. काही गावे खेळ करण्यासाठी नेमून दिली होती. परंतु अजूनही प्रसार ज्याप्रमाणे झाला त्या प्रमाणात आमच्या कला मागे राहिल्या ही खंत चेतन यांना वाटते.

सुमारे तीनशे वर्षापूर्वीच्या चित्रांच्या काही पोथ्या ठाकर आदिवासींनी आजही जतन करून ठेवल्या आहेत. चित्रकथी सादरीकरणासाठी किमान तीन कलाकारांचा समावेश असतो. या सादरीकरणाला पोथी सोडणे असे संबोधतात. मधोमध बसलेल्या कलाकारच्या हातात टाळ, त्याच्या शेजारी बसलेल्या दुस-याच्या हाती दुडुक जे डमरूसारखे भासणारे आणि हाताने वाजवायचे वाद्य असते आणि तिसरा फक्त कोरस संगीत देतो.

सादरीकरण करणा-या कलाकारांची वेशभूषा धोतर त्यावर सफेद कुर्ता जॅकेट असा असतो. १२ इंच कागदावर चित्रे काढलेली असतात. यासाठी वापरण्यात येणारा रंग निसर्गातील वनस्पतीच्या साली, पाने, फुले, माती यापासून तयार केलेले होते. विशेषत: प्राचीन काही चित्रे झाडांच्या मोठमोठय़ा पानांवर काढली जात असत.

सोमेश्वराच्या ‘मानसोल्हासा’मध्ये उल्लेख असलेली ‘चित्रकथी’ म्हणजेच चित्रांद्वारे कथन केली जाणारी कथा होय. विघ्नहरासी गाई एकदंता, देवा दौरी हराचिया सुता सकळसरसी गुणगाता, तुझे चरणी नमन माझे सकळ देवांशी वंदू आणि तू दाविसी ज्ञानमार्गीचा इंदू

यथोनिया परिबंधू मज मति द्यावी विघ्नहरा या स्तवनाने ‘चित्रकथीला’ प्रारंभ केला जातो.

गणपतीचे चित्र, बाजूला रिद्धी-सिद्धी असे पान दाखवून त्या पानामागील सरस्वतीचे पान दाखवून ‘चित्रकथी’ला ख-या अर्थाने सुरुवात होते. आजच्या पिढीला या प्राचीन ठेव्याची ओळख व्हावी म्हणून पिंगुळी येथे आर्ट गॅलरीची स्थापना केली. या समाजात गंगावणेप्रमाणे माजगे, मस्के, रणसिंग, आटक, वाकडे, ठोमरे अशी आडनावे असतात. पूर्वी हा समाज जंगलात राहात असे, आता मात्र नागर जीवनात या कला कळाव्या म्हणून महाभारत, रामायणचा आधार घेऊन चित्रकथी समोर आली.

चित्रकथी ही कळसूत्री बाहुल्यांचा आधार घेऊनही दाखविली जाते. रामायणावर आधारित चित्रकथी असेल तर प्रथम मुसाफिर हे विनोदी पात्र रंगमंचावर येते. देवता येते, त्यानंतरच राम-लक्ष्मण यांना घेऊन ऋषी विश्वामित्राचे आगमन होते. पाठोपाठ स्वर-दूषण या सेनापतीसह रावण येतो. यात दोन नर्तिकाही नृत्य सादर करतात. आधुनिक काळात मानवाच्या गरजा वेगवेगळ्या आहेत.

स्त्री-भ्रूण हत्यासारखे विषय घेऊनही प्रबोधन करतो. या खेळात तीस बाहुल्यांचा समावेश असतो. अशा प्रकारे कळसूत्री बाहुल्यांमार्फत जवळजवळ १०० प्रयोग केले आहेत. कोलकाता, मुंबई आणि बाहेर अनेक कार्यक्रम सादर केलेले आहेत. या चित्रकथीचा प्रभाव राजस्थान, कर्नाटक, आंध्र येथील कला प्रकारांवर झाला आहे. चित्रकथी सादर करणा-या ठाकर लोककला कलाकारांपैकी पिंगुळी येथील परशुराम गंगावणे यांच्याकडे १० पोथ्या सध्या आहेत.

त्यातील काही आताच्या आणि काही ३०० ते ३५० वर्षापूर्वीच्या आहेत. काही पोथ्यांची स्थिती आता अतिशय दयनीय आहे. त्यामुळे त्या हाताळताना काळजीपूर्वक हाताळाव्या लागतात. काहींचे तर रंग उडाले आहेत. मराठय़ांच्या राजवटीत ठाकर आदिवासी कलेकडे शिवरायांचे लक्ष गेले आणि ख-या अर्थाने राजाश्रय लाभला होता.

शिवाजी महाराजांनी ठाकर बांधवांना दरबारात बोलावून सादरीकरणासाठी प्रत्येक कुटुंबीयांना काही गावे नेमून दिली होती. त्यावेळी मळेवाडी, गुळडुवे, आरोंदा, तळवडे ही गावे परशुराम गंगावणेच्या पूर्वजांना देण्यात आली होती.

चित्रकथीचे सादरीकरण करण्यासाठी जायचे आणि अनेक मुलखात संचार करताना शत्रू पक्षाच्या गोटातील अनेक गुपिते शिवाजी महाराजांपर्यंत पोहोचवायची या त्यांच्या गुप्तहेरगिरीसाठी जमिनी ठाकर आदिवासींना इनाम म्हणून लाभलेल्या आहेत. मे महिन्याच्या अखेरीस आणि जूनच्या पहिल्या आठवडय़ात इनाम गावातील वाडय़ात वाडीप्रमुखाच्या घरी सायंकाळी जाऊन चित्रकथी सादर केली जाते. दुस-या दिवशी सकाळी वाडीत घरोघरी जाऊन वाडीतील लोकांनी दिलेले धान्य, कोकम, नारळ, मिरची, काजू या वस्तू किंवा रोख रक्कम गोळा केली जाते.

परशुराम गंगावणेची दोन मुले चेतन आणि एकलव्य ही मुले आताच्या पिढीला कला समजावी म्हणून प्रयत्न करत आहेत. प्रदर्शने भरविणे, सामाजिक कार्यक्रमातून चित्रकथी सादर करणे. भारत सरकारच्या गुरू-शिष्य परंपरा या योजनेसाठी परशुराम गंगावणेची निवड झाली आहे. शिवाय आता शिबिरे घेऊन तरुण पिढीला या कलेचे ज्ञानही दिले जाते.

शिवाय आता जे म्युझियम आणि आर्ट गॅलरीची स्थापना केली आहे तिथे पर्यटक आकर्षित व्हावेत म्हणून झोपडीवजा जागेत वेगवेगळी पेंटिंग्स लावली आहेत. शिवाय मातीची मडकी, सूर, नांगर, अवजारे या वस्तूही शहरातील लोकांना बघायला मिळावे म्हणून आयोजन केले आहे. शिवाय जमीन शेणाने सारवलेली आहे. त्यामुळे प्राचीन वातावरण तयार केले आहे. पर्यटकांसाठी वेगळे काहीतरी बघायला मिळेल आणि या कलेचे जतन होण्यासाठी मदत होईल अशी आपण आशा करू आणि गंगावणे कुटुंबाला शुभेच्छा देऊ!

Thakar Adivasi Kala Angan (Museum & Art Gallery)

INTRODUCTION:

The Thakar Adivasi Kala Angan is the first Museum of Thakar traditional folk arts, crafts and forms of dance drama in India, which is situated in ancestral village of Pinguli in South Maharashtra.
Shri.Parshuram V.Gangavane director, Awarded the “Maharashtra State Govt. Award-2009” For Preserving the traditional Thakar folk art locally and perform it nationally from last 35 years. The trust undertakes ongoing activities in “Guru Shishya Parampara”, conservation of original art materials and promotion of this beautiful range of folk art.

There are eleven distinct art forms of Thakar Heritage. We give below a brief description of a few among them.
