Sorry, but it’s about time someone says something about the napkins in NYC

This has been on my mind ever since I moved to New York City four and a half years ago and now I feel is the right time to get it off my plate (no pun intended)… why must so many New York area restaurants use those tiny napkins? I like to call them crapkins since they are horrible. You know the ones I am talking about, they are paper thin, 3 inches by 4 inches and have the power to clean at most one finger per use.

This rant opinion isn’t even meant to be directed at Kosher restaurants since I know it exists in many non-kosher restaurants (I think they are used 100% of the time in NY area pizzerias). The first thought that comes to mind are that they may be the cheapest option for owners out there. OK, but don’t they see that we just end up using 3 or 4 more times the napkins than of the kind of standard issue napkin you will get at any major US restaurant chain (and I can bet you they have done the math on napkin cost efficiencies), so it can’t be a cost savings. Second thought are that they use these jenky ones because they think that people may be less inclined to steal them for their home supply. This may be true to some extent but the kind of person who takes napkins for their home will take any kind they can get anyways. If the napkins are good quality they may even return to the restaurant just for the napkins (I have done it before – The Prime Grill has great ones, you can soak up half an ocean with the absorbency in their napkins), not to forget that a logo on the napkin is free advertising anyways.

I can’t think of any other reason as to why they use these crapkins, thoughts anyone? Please pass this on to anyone you know who owns a restaurant who may have an answer for us.

Dakshin II – The Review (hey, that rhymed!)

QUICK REVIEW: I was up at 57th and Lexington today when I realized I was hungry and it was time for lunch. Unfortunately it doesn’t seem like there is much to eat in this area (can someone please open up a pizzeria). Fortunately for me however – I am the editor of the #1 online Kosher restaurant blog so finding somewhere was not that big an issue. The smart people we were, in the 95+ degree weather we decided to take our wallets to the kosher offerings of Dakshin II’s Indian Buffet. There is nothing more refreshing than spicy food on a hot August day (insert sarcasm mark here). Being on 1st avenue is a bit out of the way for most of the people who work in this area, so I will assume they have a better crowd for dinner.

The Buffet

When you walk in the first thing you see is the buffet table stocked full of, yep, you guessed it – Indian cuisine. The decor is typical for an Indian Buffet. Hopefully Shalom Bombay will make their place nicer (if they ever open). The lunch buffet is $9.95 and they do not take credit cards for orders under $25. Quick thought before I forget: they didn’t have extra plates when I went back for seconds or thirds (isn’t this a buffet rule?) or even fourths.

Sauces

If you love sauces like me, you will appreciate the ones they had. Although the presentation could be better their selection was good. The yogurt sauce with naan was so good I couldn’t believe it was parve. For the main course, the chicken masala and baghare baingan were my favorite. Spiced just right they went great when scooped up with some naan. Unfortunately all of the pictures I took of the main dishes came out bad, I will have to go back and take a pic of them for you guys another time. A few more pics though for your enjoyment and consideration.

Rice and Chicken Tandoori

The chicken looked REALLY spicy (it wasn’t). Still good however.

Fruit Salad

Wikipedia defines a salad as having a mixture of fruits. While this one only contained cantaloupe I will take their word for it that it was in fact a salad.

Overall it was ok, if you are in the mood for Glatt Kosher Indian food and are in the area then you should definitely check them out.

Kolette’s Kitchen opening in Midtown

After a tip last week, the word on the subways are that Kolette’s Kitchen will be opening soon on Lexington Avenue between 55 and 56 streets under the OK Kosher hescher. Surprise surprise – their menu will be having your typical kosher menu of pretty much everything, including middle eastern, deli and vietnamese cuisine.

Let us know how it is when you go there, will yah?

UPDATE: Our buddy Avi tells us that they are still not open as of today. We will update again when they are! He also sent us a sweet pic of the front!

Kosher snacks found at 7-Eleven!

I had the 4 o’clock munchies this afternoon so I decided to run to 7-Eleven at 23rd and Park to see if I could find anything to waste some calories on. To my surprise the front display was stocked with Kosher Certified snacks! From croissants to pound cake to cookies they had a great selection of goods with certifications from OU and Kof-K.

Do us a favor and check out the 7-Eleven in your part of town and let us know if they have the Kosher goods also. Yum!

Shabazille opening up in Brooklyn – Free tasting this Sunday!

Shabazille, a new dairy/sushi spot is having their grand opening in Brooklyn. They are going to be under the Supervision of Rabbi David Navarro (has anyone ever heard of him?) They are still finalizing their hours/menu so we will update this once we know more.

The best news about this? To celebrate they are having a free tasting this Sunday at 7:00pm!

The owners say they are new to the restaurant business so lets help them out!

UPDATE: Please see comments below in regards to the hechsher of Rabbi David Navarro.

Quick Stop Kosher Cart found on Park Avenue South!

Funny thing happened on the way to work today. I took a different route than my normal one in order to get a haircut, when he was too busy I left and stumbled upon this amazing kosher cart parked at the northwest corner of 23rd and Park Avenue! Quick Stop Kosher‘s menu ranges from a full line of breakfast sandwiches (eggs, bagels, omelettes) to coffees, falafels (he says it is Moshes Falafel, his cart seems to have dissapeared so many this is the replacement?), salads, french fries and something new, WAFFLES! QSK is certified kosher by Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Schreiber – The Presburger Hechsher (first time I heard about this hechsher, if anyone has any info about them please let us know). Their food looks amazing! Everyone in the area be sure to check him out and support them so they stay in the neighborhood! We need a kosher joint in Flatiron/Gramercy!

PS. From the looks of their Facebook page they seem to move around the city quite a bit so be sure to follow them there to see where they are going to be!

Do you eat at vegan/vegetarian places?

There are many levels of observancy in kashrut that we in the Jewish community have in regards to food. We are curious as to which one of you Orthodoxian Jews eat strictly Glatt Kosher however you eat at non-glatt kosher places. Do you eat at some places and not others? Do you eat vegan but not vegetarian? Will you eat at a vegan place without a hescher but not at a kosher (non-glatt) place like 2nd Avenue Deli? How about the other way around? There are many possibilities so I won’t list them all! Let us know in the comments what you do and why you do it!
