You’ve just had a wonderful massage, and you go home feeling both relaxed and rejuvenated. But the next morning, you wake up with twinges of muscle soreness, maybe some fatigue, and you just don’t feel yourself. What happened? Chances are it’s the massage, and it’s perfectly OK.

“It’s very much like doing a workout. If the muscles aren’t used to it, they often respond with some soreness.” This should last for no more than two or three days. If it lasts longer, the massage may have been too intense, and the therapist should adjust for this in the next session. However, just as with exercise, when your body adjusts to having this type of workout, your physical response will also be less intense.

One of the major factors which causes soreness is the type of massage. Many types of massage are like a workout for the body, even when the client is lying still. Shiatsu and deep tissue, for example, involve extensive muscle manipulation which can result in soreness after massage because the body is unaccustomed to the sensation. Thai massage is another type of massage which may lead to soreness, because the body is flexed and stretched. If you are concerned about soreness after massage, you can ask a massage therapist about what you should expect after the massage.

Swedish massage, pregnancy massage, acupressure, and lomi lomi are some types of massage which are much less likely to result in soreness. All of these types of massage are very gentle and non-invasive. This is one of the reasons they are performed on people with disabilities, since they are less intense than deep work, and they still help to relax the body, promote circulation, and make someone feel more healthy. For people with compromised health, soreness after massage is not desired, so a more gentle type of bodywork is recommended.

So what else can you do to minimize sometimes painful side effects? Communicating with a massage therapist is also important if you want to reduce the probability of soreness after massage and get the most benefits from the session. Massage should not be painful, although it may be intense. If you experience pain during a massage, it will translate into soreness later. Make sure to outline your expectations for the session before you begin, and do not be afraid to speak out about pain. Everybody is slightly different, and your feedback helps the massage therapist to adjust his or her technique for comfort and maximum effectiveness. Pain is not productive, since it causes tension during the session. This, in turn, will result in soreness after massage, because the muscles were not relaxed during the session.

Lastly, a good massage will help to flush toxins out of the muscles. This can lead to soreness after massage, as the body works to express the toxins. Drink plenty of water immediately following your treatment, and continue to do so for the next day or two. This will rehydrate your tissues and ease the effects. Take it easy after your massage. Go home, relax and just allow your body to find its balance naturally. Like exercise, make bodywork a habitual practice for good health. And if you wake up the next morning a little sore, it’s probably because you had a really good massage.

Have you ever wondered why you are told to drink extra water after a massage? Your therapist is not just honing a nurturing instinct or lecturing you on good health. When your muscles are manipulated during a massage waste materials and other toxins are released from the muscles and into the blood stream. Just like when you exercise, massage, especially deep tissue or sports recovery massage, dehydrates muscles and removes electrolytes. In order to help your kidneys process and flush out these toxins, it is important to drink additional water. Water will help prevent unnecessary soreness, possible nausea, and an overall sluggish feeling. Your body is happy to get rid of all the “junk” it has been storing but you need to help it along with extra H2O. Keeping your muscles hydrated regularly helps keep the tissue supple and healthy reducing tension and spasm.

When your muscles are manipulated during a massage waste materials and other toxins are released from the muscles and into the blood stream… In order to help your kidneys process and flush out these toxins, it is important to drink additional water.

There is debate about the actual amount of water that is considered the right amount. A good way to know you are hydrated is to make a point to drink your 8 glasses a day and if your urine is clear then, you are hydrated. If you are already a pro at staying hydrated, then go ahead and tack on an extra 3-4 glasses of water after a massage. Everybody is different so you might have to test it out and see how much is enough for you. If the day after a massage you are stiff and fatigued, add on a couple more glasses the next go around. You will find your body feeling renewed and rejuvenated. You can sip it Thann Sanctuary Brunei style by adding cut citrus or cucumber to your glass.

The newest cure-all may be an ancient one: simple touch. The Chinese have been using massage for all kinds of medical conditions for centuries. Now, Western research is confirming that massage isn’t just for muscle pain. One of the most surprising findings: massage may help premature babies gain weight. When Tiffany Field, a professor of pediatrics, became a new mother, she massaged her premature infant daughter and was so impressed with the results she later founded the Touch Research Institute (TRI) at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Massage, it turns out, may boost immunity and help people with a range of conditions from premenstrual syndrome to high blood pressure. It also seems to help soothe pain from arthritis, burns and even surgery. Here are five surprising facts about massage from the research findings at TRI and elsewhere that you can put to use:

1. Pick Your Spot: You don’t have to massage the part of the body that hurts most. If you’re shy about letting a friend touch your aching lower back, for instance, she could help by massaging your shoulders instead. This is because massage creates chemical changes that reduce pain and stress throughout the body. One way it does this is by reducing a brain chemical called substance P that is related to pain. In a TRI study, for example, individuals with a form of muscle pain called fibromyalgia showed less substance P in their saliva (and they reported reduced pain) after a month of twice-weekly massages.

2. De-Stress, Stay Healthy. Massage may boost immunity. Several studies have measured the stress hormone called cortisol in subjects’ saliva before and after massage sessions, and found dramatic decreases. Cortisol, which is produced when you are stressed, kills cells important for immunity, so when massage reduces your stress levels and hence the cortisol in your body, it may help you avoid getting a cold or another illness while under stress.

3. Blood Pressure Benefits: Massage reduces hypertension, suggests a good deal of research. This may be because it stimulates pressure receptors that prompt action from the vagus nerve, one of the nerves that emerges from the brain. The vagus nerve regulates blood pressure, as well as other functions. In a 2005 study at the University of South Florida, hypertension patients who received 10 massages of 10 minutes each over three weeks showed significant improvements in blood pressure compared to a control group who simply rested in the same environment without any massage.4. Technique Tactics: There’s little evidence to support one kind of massage over another, says Field, so don’t worry about whether your therapist is schooled in Shiatsu, Swedish or some other technique. The key is pressure firm enough to make a temporary indentation in the skin. If you try massage with a partner, use massage oil, which you can find in a health-food store or pharmacist, but test a little on your skin first to make sure you are not allergic.

5. Self Help. You can massage yourself. Although you don’t have to massage the part of the body that hurts to relieve pain, targeting that area does tend to help more. One example is massaging the arms. If you’re in danger of developing inflamed nerves in your hands or arms from repetitive movements (like typing on a keyboard, or even gripping a steering wheel for hours at a time) try massaging your arms for 15 minutes a day. Stroke from the wrist to the elbow and back down on both sides of the forehand.

Rice Bran Oil is one of nature best-kept secrets. It is primary extracted from the germ (inner husk) of the rice grain, where as the bran (outer layer of the grain) is used for medicinal purposes. This natural oil, which is expeller pressed, has the presence of natural antioxidants making it an excellent ingredient for food grade products.

Rice Bran Oil is rich in antioxidants, such as Vitamin E, ferulic acid, linoleic acid, oleic acid, palmitic acid, and oryzanol. The oil acts as both a carrier and emollient. In Japan, Rice Bran Oil is used as a skin and hair beauty enhancer. It is also used throughout the world in a variety of cosmetics, especially for those that treat dry and mature skin.

Benefits of Rice Bran Oil

High in antioxidants to fight free radicals and aid in slowing down the effects of aging.

Considered to be hypoallergenic, making it ideal for client even with the most sensitive skin.

Protect collagen and elastin to maintain the suppleness of your skin.

High in fatty acids, making it very beneficial for mature, delicate and sensitive skin.

The small molecule enable it to penetrate into the skin without being greasy.

Other benefits include:

Anti-Cancer Effects
Rice bran oil contains significant levels of both gamma and delta tocotrienols (approximately 500 ppm), a forms of Vitamin E, that have been found to be able to accumulate in cancer cells and kill the tumours. In a study conducted at Kyushu University in Japan, researchers looked at the effects of tocotrienols on mouse cancer cells. There was a significant delay in growth in the cancer cells. “Our results suggested that accumulation is critical for the anti-tumour activity of tocotrienols,” said Japanese lead researcher, Yuhei Hiura, reporting in “The Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry.”

Skin Protector
Originating in the Japanese culture, skin care with rice bran oil is becoming more popular. To this day, one of the highest compliments a Japanese woman can receive is to be called a “nuka bijin” which means “a rice bran beauty.” Having smooth healthy skin is due to the oryzanol in the rice bran oil that whitens the skin slightly. As the skin is exposed to sunlight, the rice bran oil reacts as a sunscreen protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays. The oryzanol impedes melanin pigmentation by restraining the erythema activity of tyrosinase as it stops the ultraviolet rays’ transmission at the skin’s surface. The use of rice bran oil in sunscreen products and hair conditioners is on the increase in the United States and Japan.

Antioxidant Packed
Rice bran oil contains three healthy antioxidants useful in protecting the body’s cells against the effects of free radicals–tocopherol, tocotrienol and oryzanol. In addition, rice bran oil does not require hydrogenation for stability and has a high percentage of fatty acids (oleic, 46 percent; linoleic, 36 percent; and linolenic, 1 percent). Antioxidant companies have switched their basic oil to rice bran oil. This movement is an indication that industry leaders recognize rice bran oil’s lipid oxidative stability. Lipid oxidative stability is important in the prevention of pathologic processes such as cardiovascular diseases, arthritis and inflammatory processes.

Lowers Cholesterol
Rice bran oil contains gamma oryzanol, a group of ferulate esters of triterpene alcohols and phytosterols that have been linked to many health benefits. Gamma oryzanol is effective in reducing plasma cholesterol and reducing cholesterol absorption, decreasing early atherosclerosis. In addition, gamma oryzanol inhibits platelet aggregation that could lead to blood clots. Rice bran oil contains tocotrienol (a form of Vitamin E) which has been found to inhibit the activity of HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme that synthesizes cholesterol, a major factor in heart disease. In a study conducted at the University of Rochester, Mohammad Minhajuddin, Ph.D., and researchers determined that the tocotrienol in rice bran oil reduced cholesterol in rats up to 42 percent while lowering LDL cholesterol up to 62 percent.

Mick Vann of the Austin Chronicle wrote, “The more I discovered, however, the better this oil sounded. Web searches revealed dozens of scientific research articles claiming all manners of health benefits: It reduces bad-cholesterol levels, boosts good cholesterol, and fights free radicals; it’s an anti-inflammatory, reverses liver damage, inhibits cancer growth, reduces effects of menopause, and on and on”

Brought into the mainstream by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Frank Lampard, waxing is now one of the most popular ways of removing unwanted body hair. And it’s not just shoulders and backs you can have de-fuzzed. The ‘Boyzilian’ is essentially the male equivalent of the popular female ‘Brazilian’, and involves hair being removed from around your shaft, testicles, perineum, and backside using wax or a sugaring treatment.

You can even opt for a male Hollywood which involves the removal of all the hair from your nether regions. Alternatively, you can just have the bits you want done and leave other bits au naturel.

Why would I want one?
For starters, with the current backlash against big bushes (both male and female) you’ll be bang-on trend. But a little pubic topiary can also prove to be more hygienic (bacteria thrive on sweaty body hair) and it’ll enhance the appearance of your ‘undercarriage’ and make your tackle look bigger. Lots of women prefer the look of a tidy trunkline too.

The advantage of waxing over shaving is that it removes the hairs at the root, so you get better, smoother results which last longer – on average between 3-6 weeks. Because the hairs grow back with naturally fine ends (rather than blunt ones that come from shaving) there’s no itchy re-growth either.

What does it involve?
Long hair is usually trimmed to make things easier to remove. Then, the skin is pulled taught and soft warm wax (or a sugar paste) is applied to the hairs and quickly ripped off, taking the hairs with it. A post-waxing moisturiser is then applied to soothe and protect the freshly-waxed area.

It’s an intimate procedure, but a towel is used to cover your modesty and the therapists will be too busy ensuring a smooth finish (no, not a happy one) to be concerned about your ‘gentleman’s area’. Also, waxing and arousal rarely go hand-in-hand, so don’t worry about embarrassing yourself. The whole procedure takes less than an hour, so is something you fit into your lunch break.

Does it hurt?
As most women who’ve had Brazilians will testify, it only hurts a little, and men who’ve gone back for more tend to find the first time is the worst. Taking a peg to bite on is probably a bit extreme, but taking a stress ball to squeeze might not be a bad idea.
