The Tharakkal Sri Maha Vishnu Temple which is situated by the Thrissur - Irinjalakuuda route near the Puthenthodu bridge in Karuvannur, at Thrissur district is a very ancient temple. This land which has three Vishnu temples amazingly structured in a straight line, inherited its name from ‘Karu’ that means ‘water stream’ and ‘uur’ that means place. This place which is important for its heritage and holiness lost its glory to time and also due to carelessness and bad deeds of our ancestors.

This temple which is more than 1200 yrs old is said to have been the private property of the Koodallur Muthedathu Mana. For the procurement of child, a statue of Lord Krishna was worshipped in the Illam, and after it’s fruitful result a beautiful temple was built and this same statue was reinstated and worshipped in it.

The deity is in the ferocious form of a young Lord Krishna soon after the slaughter of Bakasura.The demon Bakasura ,who was the brother of Poothana tried to murder Lord Krishna by assuming the form of a bird demon (a bird of bad omens) and tried to swallow Lord Krishna .Using Vaishnava, a supreme power the Lord melted the inner parts of Baka and came out of the bird-shaped body and again tore it into two parts .According to myth the Lord thus showed his Divine Form and proclaimed himself to be the savior of all young ones. The Tharakkal temple is said to have had plenty of land and wealth. The accessories of the temple including mandapam ,pathayapura like wise also said to have been the part of its glory.It is said that due to the quarrel between two royal families ,the festivals of this temple had been terminated.In any case after these families are said to have been dilapidated and gradually faded out of existence.

Rennovation:

Taking into consideration the fervent insistence of the devotees of this place, the committee on January 23rd 2011 called for a group meeting at the temple premises. Here, in the meeting, in the presence of three important members like the group devaswom ruling committee president ,secretary and treasurer, a new 18 member re-innovation committee has been formed and started functioning. The re-innovation of this temple is now in charge of this committee itself. As the first step towards the renovation process, on 7th March 2011,the famous astrologer Sri Padmabha Sharma was invited and on the basis of his astrological readings, Several information regarding the greatness of this sacred temple cold be excavated.

For the welfare of the people and this land, it is extremely important that they contribute whole heartedly into the re-innovation programme and that they support and coordinate in the matters of expense and by person.

The devotees as a part of their holy act can contribute to the temple in the form of money or by dedicating temple accessories. Such as the construction of shrine ,the supply of teakwood for the placing of chembola ,thazika –kudam , the construction of prayers of hall, temple premises, temple well, the pillars of lamps, sacrificial stone ,the clearing of temple lake,the construction of gopurams ,naveegarana kalasham and the like.

The Aim:

It is estimated that after installing the deity on 29-05-11 till its re-installation before April 2012, an amount of Rs 3.5 crores will be spent for the construction of shrine and various other accessories.

The famed astrologer Kannipayur Krishnan Namboodhiripad has outlined the carpentry based on Shastra and its overall budget.

The tantic pujas is being performed by Brahmasree Animangal Vasudevan Namboodiripad.

It is extremely rare to receive an opportunity to built a temple or to be a part of its work. It can be considered to be a blessing of a life time .Please do participate whole heartedly along with yours whole family ,so that this deed will always remain in the pages of history.
