This week, we'll play an interview we conducted of Gar Alperovitz, political economist, historian and professor here at UMD.

We discuss his book America Beyond Capitalism: Reclaiming our Wealth, Liberty, and Democracy. Alperovitz discusses many serious issues facing the American economy and society. He also presents alternatives to the ownership structures and inequalities of U.S. capitalism, such as worker-owned companies, cooperatives, mutual funds, and economic development corporations; a strategy towards lessening the inequality gap, empowering people on a local level and deepening democracy in their lives.

First, we had a tribute to Richard Aoki, former Black Panther who passed away on Sunday. He was the only Asian American to hold a formal leadership role in the organization, and leaves a legacy of activism and third-world solidarity.

* Health Care Reform
We also look into the health care crisis and the potential for reform. We've gathered data from a variety of recent reports outlying the huge disparities in access and quality of health care along the lines of face, ethnicity, age, gender, and national orgin. We also play a radio documentary report from Amy Goodman of Democracy Now describing single payer health care systems and where the Obama administration stands on reform.

+ We broadcast the National Radio Project's "War and Life in Iraq" documentary. This is the synopsis: Car bombings, roadside bombs, new governments and the latest body counts of dead U.S. soldiers... there's no shortage of news coverage of Iraq these days. Yet, it's very difficult to get a clear picture of daily life for the 25 million people who call Iraq home. Shortly after the fall of Saddam Hussein, Making Contact's Aaron Glantz traveled to Iraq as an un-embedded journalist for Pacifica Radio. He criss-crossed the country interviewing regular Iraqis and returned to write a book called "How America Lost Iraq." Now, back in the U.S., he continues to report on the conflict in collaboration with Iraqi journalist Salam Talib. Together, they offer a unique window into life in wartime.

+ Dean Becker is the host of Cultural Baggage (partnered with the 4:20 Drug War News Report), a widely syndicated independent radio project. Dean's intention is to illuminate all the issues surrounding the drug war, both domestically and globally. He is also a member of Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).

+ Ben Scott is the media policy chair working with Free Press, a national organization designed to increase public participation and awareness of the media and the ways that it shapes our daily lives. Free Press organized the National Conference for Media Reform in Memphis, where the Maryland Media Collective travelled to over the winter break.
o War on Torture
+ We also played a portion of the National Radio Project's radio documentary entitled the War on Torture. The documentary explores the treatment of detainees at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo, and elsewhere.

They join us to speak on the recent harassment they've been facing from the school administration, security, and press. The center, named after Morales, a student activist and Shakur, an ex-Black Panther and COINTEL program target; was founded after a student take-over in protest in rising tuition costs.
