From Publishers Weekly Picasso watched closely from his adopted Paris as the Spanish Civil War unfolded, and when German bombers leveled the Basque village of Guernica, the previously apolitical Picasso felt stirred to action. Created at a frenzied pace, his painting Guernica was both homage to his Catalonian homeland and a scathing indictment of bloodshed. While Martin (Beethoven's Hair) meticulously describes the painting's creation and context, much of the book focuses on the controversies that haunted the canvas for decades. When Guernica was first introduced at the Spanish pavilion of the 1937 International Exposition of Art and Technology Applied to Modern Life in Paris, it was ignored by many, criticized by others for ugliness-and even for not being political enough. Later acknowledged as a classic, it was housed in New York's Museum of Modern Art, safe from the war overseas. By the '60s, voices grew stronger asking for its return to Spain, the country that had originally commissioned its creation. With Franco still in power, an aging Picasso asked that the painting go to Spain only when the country was once again free from oppression. Within this larger narrative, Martin weaves a memoir of his own trek to visit Guernica, which finally arrived in Spain in the 1980s. Martin (Beethoven's Hair) extensively researched the circumstances surrounding the creation of this painting and the attention it has continued to command. On 9/11 he was in Madrid viewing "Guernica"; here he has collaged his response to the attacks in New York City with his feelings about the painting. In the face of such terrible loss, it may be reasonable to parallel the two horrific events; however, Martin mixes fact and opinion with his personal reminiscences. Picasso's politics were ambiguous at best; while he joined the Communist Party to please his friends after World War II, he became disillusioned with Stalin in the 1950s. Picasso said, when asked, in typical fashion, that painting was his party. "Guernica's" historical significance as possibly "the last great history painting" gets lost here, begging the question is it politics, art, or tragedy that is Martin's focus? He discusses visuals yet provides no illustrations, such as the photographs Dora Maar took of Picasso working on "Guernica" or the preparatory drawings. Nice historical perspective without getting too involved. I didn't know anything about Guernica before I read this and I knew very little about Picasso. It made me want to do a little more research, which I love to do. I was intrigued by Picasso's feelings for Spain even though he lived most of his life in France.

Pablo Picasso: The Complete Linoleum Cuts, 1939-1968 (Picasso's Paintings, Watercolors, Drawings and Sculpture. a Comprehensive Illustrated Catalogue 1885-1973) Details

This catalogue is the most comprehensive yet to appear on Picasso's linoleum cuts. There are descriptions of 194 linocuts on paper and 10 on ceramics. This is the first catalogue to give examples of preliminary versions, the published edition and of rinsed impressions of the same linocut. The standard Baer and Bloch catalogues only give titles in French and do not give the size of the sheets on which the linocuts were printed and published. This new catalogue presents titles in both French and English, including variant titles. It also specifies a range of acceptable sizes of the printed image and of the sheet size, both of which are important to the collector and connoisseur in order to authenticate a print. The previous catalogues often gave different dimensions for the same image and this catalogue infers a range of reasonable dimensions both for the image and the sheet. There are introductions by prominent experts and collaborators of Picasso, specifically relative to the linocuts. The catalogue contains indexes of the titles, both in French and in English, as well as separate concordances to the Baer and Bloch catalogues. At each catalogue entry, there are also references to the print in prior catalogues and in auction sale catalogues, for unique and unusual impressions.Picasso s first linocut is in support of the Czech artists living in France after the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia in March, 1939 (L-001). Beginning in 1951, he starts an annual tradition of creating a linocut poster in support of the potters of Vallauris, where he had become a resident and a potter himself. From 1952 to 1958 he creates linocuts as posters for the annual pottery exhibition in Vallauris together with a few experimental linoleum block prints. In 1958 he creates one of his most important linocuts, Bust of a Woman after Lucas Cranach the Younger (L-032). This print is made from 5 linoleum blocks and is published by the Galerie Louise Leiris in Paris, directed by Picasso s long time dealer Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler. Following the success of this print, the artist produces another 44 linocuts from June through December, 1959. The Galerie Louise Leiris publishes these in editions of 50 impressions in 1960. A number of the linocuts are printed in several colors from a single linoleum block that the artist reduces seriatim by cutting out an additional state of the image after each color is printed. Picasso himself invented this reductionist technique for making a linocut. Many of the prints in the series are bullfighting subjects. There are also mythological and romantic images and portraits of the woman who would become his second wife in March, 1961 Jacqueline Roque. From November, 1961 through April, 1962 the artist creates another series of linocuts that the Galerie Louise Leiris will publish in 1963 in editions of 50 impressions. This new series consists of abstract and surreal portraits of Jacqueline, still lifes and some portraits in a 17th Century style in homage to El Greco. In January, 1963 Picasso uses five or six linoleum blocks to transform 3 images (L-159 to L-161) into The Old King or The Old Fool (L-162). The first three are published by the Galerie Louise Leiris in editions of 50 impressions and the final version is published by Le Patriote newspaper in Nice on the occasion of the annual carnival in February.In October 1963, Picasso creates his first rinsed linocuts of a couple embracing (L-167 to L-169). This is a new procedure that the artist invented to create a handmade look for a print. Picasso also makes a few more rinsed linocuts between October, 1963 and January, 1964. I bought this book over a decade ago it seems and finally got around to going through it and I have to tell you it's really good. One of the reviewers said the tone was bad for country but I think the opposite. On a Fender statocastor through a Fender amp (I sound like a plug) Gregg's tone is incredible for all styles except jazz which usually requires hollow body electric for a fat clean tone. As far as the other criticism that you get 5 styles per track, well there were limitations on CD tracks 14 years ago. Nowadays it's hard to get a CD with a book like this much less one recorded so well. I'm using the book as a sort of warmup book. I haven't found a bad lick in it and some are very challenging to play and the country licks are no exception. Get it if you still can !

This is a challenging 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle created from a picture of Chihuly's work. He is a master glass artist. It is challenging because of picture composition, puzzle shapes (a number of unusual cuts) and somewhat loose fits (until completion). If you are up to such challenges, you might upgrade my rating to 5 star. It is a many-hour project, depending on your skill.

The art is beautiful and the coffee table size of the book allows the reader to enjoy the intricate details of Chihuly's exquisite genius. The only complaint is the lighting on a few of the bowls makes areas of some flat surfaces appear blown out. Beautifully laid out, deep & saturated color, sharp pictures, nicely staged.

As a professional photographer I find this book fascinating. Joanna Steichen put together a wonderful collection of her husband's work. She begins each chapter with background on Steichen's work surrounding the chapter's theme, then shows image after image. The book is well printed and work the price for anyone studying art and photography.
