After much anticipation, well by me at least, Warner Bros. Pictures has finally given us a release date, a new trailor and not to mention an awesome soundtrack list for the remake of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic book and movie, The Great Gatsby!

The 2013 rendition will star Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, and Tobey Maguire, AND (drumroll please), will feature melodies by Jay-Z, Lana Del Ray, Beyonce, and Andre 3000.

I can’t tell if I’m more excited about this beautifully shot movie or the star studded soundtrack, but I do know that come May 10th, I will be one amongst many to experience what I am sure to be an awesome cinematic experience.

With spring officially in full effect, I have a deep desire to step out of my fashion comfort zone. I reflect upon a time in my teens where baring my midriff never required a second thought and doing so was quite efortless. Now that I am a bit more mature, I can’t help but wonder…Is there a way for me to still show a little skin this season while maintaining my cool?

Shala Monroque, the ultimate St. Lucian IT Girl, answers this very question and gives Chioma Nnadi for Vogue Magazine a few pointers on how to “Bare your midriff the RIGHT way”…

Shala shares her love for crop tops…

“Crop tops are nothing new for me.

I’ve worn them since I was a child and I keep going back to them. My aunt had a clothing store in St. Lucia where I grew up, and she did a lot of my shopping in New York when I was a kid. She always embodied the idea of sexy to me, as far as I can remember, and I wanted to be just like her. She used to wear crop tops back then, so my love of them really started with her.“

Shala shares how she would style a crop top…

“Nowadays I like wearing them in the summer with my high-waisted pants so you barely see any skin.

I think you shouldn’t have your navel showing unless you’re at the beach.

My raffia Alaïa skirt sits below the navel, so when I wear a crop top with it, I’ll cover-up with a wide cowrie-shell belt. It’s more of a peekaboo effect—just a tease—than about showing the entire thing.”

Ask That IT Girl: “HELP! I Have Flaky but Oily Skin!”

Dear Maisha,

I wanted to know what advice you had for flaky skin. My nose is sometimes flaky but sometimes oily as well. Every morning and every night I use tea tree oil. I then use Simple skin toner, a tea tree scrub twice a week and I drink tons of water everyday. I also need help with getting rid of scars because my skin scars really easily.

Dear K,

Your issues with flakiness and oiliness may be due to your overusage of the tea tree oil. A lot of times, us oily skinned girls think we need to strip oil from our skin or we over compensate with oil/acne control products to solve the problem when this actually causes the exact opposite. Stripping the skin of it’s natural oil causes the glands in your skin to go into overdrive, thus creating extra oil. The tea tree oil is very drying as it is supposed to be used to dry out active acne breakouts. This drying action can lead to the flakiness and there you have it…oily, flaky skin.

I have combination acne prone skin, and what I’ve noticed is that the more gentle I am with my skin, the less breakouts I have, less hyper-pigmentation, and less oil control issues. I think you need to switch to a gentle cleanser. I love Purity Made Simple Cleanser by Philosophy which is available at stores like Sephora, and Ulta. I also like the Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, available at most drugstores, which is great for oily skin. I think the tea tree exfoliater is ok for you to continue to use 2-3 times a week.

When it comes to skin care, moisturizing and treating my hyperpigmentation is where I prefer to invest money. Many drugstore brands to me are just not as effective as some of the other brands I’ve discovered. Serums with glycolic, mandelic, and malic acid tend to work the best. I LOVE the M2 Skin Refinish Serum in 15% and 20%. These products offer a gentle peel and help treat acne and hyperpigmentation fast. They contain both mandelic and malic acid and are available online. I also love the Peter Thomas Roth AHA/BHA Acne Gel. It contains 2% salicylic acid and 10% glycolic acid. It is very gentle yet powerful and is available at Sephora and Ulta.

You mean to tell me that there’s a football game coming on in the middle of Beyoncé’s concert?!

I kid…I kid, but not really. The buzz surrounding famed Grammy Award winning megastar Beyoncé Knowles’ Super Bowl halftime performance has got me feeling festive about the game, but uberly anxious to witness what I’m guessing will be halftime history.

I am already Beyoncé’s #1 fan, however, here are 3 things that I will love to see during her well awaited performance that will make my halftime dreams come true…

I Will Love to Hear New Music…It is rumored that Beyoncé will be dropping a new album this year and while I can’t get enough of “Single Ladies” and “Run the World (Girls),” I am praying to the spiked Louboutin gods that she debuts at least 1 new single during the show.
I Need New Dance Moves to Mimic During my Glam Sessions…Even though I have my own YouTube channel, I have not built up enough courage to post videos of myself mimicking Beyoncé’s famed dance moves on film like some video makers. Nevertheless, I love dancing like Beyoncé while getting ready for girls night, and am ready for new choreography.
The Bigger the Better…As a little girl, I remember watching Michael Jackson performed during Super Bowl XXVII in 1993. I was wowed by all of the special effects and pyrotechnics and hope that Beyoncé’s performance gives me the same pomp and talent.

I ♥ Her Style: Teyonah Parris has Royally Arrived

Better known for her role on the hit tv show, Mad Men, Teyonah Parris made a name for herself at the 2013 SAG awards where she arrived red carpet ready in a royal purple one-shoulder gown, a fierce natural undo, and sparkling chandelier earrings.

Here are 3 reasons why her style caught my eye…

She’s Stepped Outside the Box… It is VERY rare that you see an actress of color rock her natural hair on the red carpet. Teyonah is blazing trails with her stylishly executed pompadour.
Her Makeup is Flawless…It enhances, not overpowers her already natural beauty. Her perfectly coiffed eyebrows and mid-tone pink lip color completes her look in its entirety.
She has a Royal Aura…Purple is the color of royalty. This coupled with Teyonah’s toned figure, perfect poise, and elegant accessories made me do a double and triple take.

I missed MAC Cosmetics’ Candy Yum Yum lipstick the first time around when it was released with their “Quite Cute” collection in 2011, AND when it was featured in MAC’s “By Request” collection in early 2012. Sometimes in life, it takes a few tries to get things right so when MAC made this tube of hot pink goodness a permanent color in December 2012 I vowed to get my hands on it.

After waiting close to a month for my [backordered] package in the mail, because every MAC counter in my area was sold out, I finally received my very own tube of MAC’s Candy Yum Yum lipstick and I cannot contain my excitement.

This lip color is a bright blue based pink with a matte finish. It coordinates well with ANY skin tone and couples great with neutral eye shadow looks.

Even though this lipstick looks great without lip liner as pictured above, it will be easy to blend with my Magenta lip liner that I usually pair with my hot pink lip looks.

A Day in the Life: My New Workspace

I have recently been longing for a place in my apartment that can serve as an uberly girly blogging workspace and I think I’ve finally created it. It is so important for me to be at ease while I work from home and for me to be able to beautifully photograph beauty products and have an awesome backdrop for my YouTube videos. After a few trips to my favorite home decor spots, and a little rearrangement of furniture, I now have a cute little nook to satisfy all of my blogging and vlogging needs.

This workspace sits in the 2nd bedroom of my abode alongside a separate computer desk that I use as well. The white desk was purchased for $19 from Ikea, the silver vase, $20 from Target, potted plant, $15 from Pier 1 Imports, silver serving tray, $17 from Target, and white plate, $6 from Target.

I designed my own business cards and had them printed at moo.com. They are a little more expensive then most printing services, by the card stock is definitely worth the price. I absolutely adore butterflies and I purchased both the little white ceramic one for $9 and the table runner for $9 at West Elm.

The aqua blue pencil holder is really a drinking glass priced at $5 at Z Gallerie. The clock cost $6 from Ikea and my Tiffany blue planner was $20 from Barnes & Noble.

My favorite fashion and style books are being held together by 2 bookends priced at $5 each from Ikea. The silver and glass cup was $8 from Z Gallerie, and the candle base $10 from Ikea.

For less then $120 I was able to create a gorgeously clean space where I can let my creative energy flow.

Beyonce reveals the more intimate side to her success in her new documentary “Life is But a Dream” set to be released exclusively to HBO February 16, 2013. In this documentary, the 31 year young super star gives a realistic view of her struggle to “stay soulful” and “stay relevant” in an industry that changes direction like the wind.

We all know that I am a huge Beyonce fan and I will absolutely be tuning in. This may be the one thing that will get me to renew my HBO subscription.
