2020 was quite the awakening in terms of social inequities, injustices, and brands wanting to make diversity changes with Black representation, and it reminded me who I collaborate with is a reflection of my own values. But as the year came to a close, the veneer of performative activism from brands faded with it. Thankfully, some have truly stuck to their word with restructuring their company, mindset, and approach to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Enter Variis.

Variis is a live and on-demand fitness app featuring workout and wellness classes including SoulCycle (you can order their at-home bike, powered by Variis, here), Rumble, HIIT, PURE Yoga, and more. They’ve been a blessing to partner with and incredibly beneficial to my journey in improving my overall health and well-being. The SoulCycle classes on my at-home bike are a blast to workout to, and the instructors are wildly talented and motivating.

They’re constantly updating the app with new features: Both freeride mode and app streaming (Netflix or Spotify) are now available while you ride! It is now available to the public too (it was for Equinox members only previously).

I had the pleasure of speaking with the VP of marketing again to get an update on their progress with improving Black representation in their company and within the last few months, they've successfully exceeded some of those goals (with even more initiatives to come this year). Ahead, a few ways Variis is taking action to increase Black representation within their company.

Variis is Committed to Restructuring Internally

Variis is young (about a year and a half to be exact), and the benefit of that is the can make changes while they’re still growing. When we first spoke in the fall, their goal was to significantly increase representation by hiring in line with NYC demographics — a goal they were able to exceed. And the team still aiming to increase that!

Variis is already ahead of the pack with a diverse team of instructors, but they noticed they could do more in bringing more Black representation to the class cast riders. In just four months, they implemented tracking data to ensure that diversity is met — I've definitely seen a difference while working out!

Variis Is Committed to Giving Back To The Black Community

Variis plans to take it even further with its initiatives to set up teams that will focus on volunteering, training, and mentorship. Additionally, there are proposals for donating and fundraising with nonprofit organizations lined up in the near future. Lastly, they have an ongoing ally ship counsel that holds meetings with the company and the board to stay informed on such issues and initiatives.

There is so much more they are hoping to achieve and are continuing to work on, and I can really feel Variis team’s passion for seeing this through, which gives me hope that there are brands out there who are ready to make an impact with Black representation. I’m excited to see how their diversity initiatives and our partnership continues to evolve!

Recently, I purged my closet in celebration of the new year (plus there is little closet space in our home) and made a promise to myself to make better choices about the clothes I invest in and wear. So here’s to focusing more on the quality of the clothes, the people that make them, and the story behind them being made. How do the clothes make me feel? Are they sustainable and/or give back to the community? Am I willing to hang on to these clothes for years to come?

This year flew right by me. As the year’s end approaches, I look at my closet, overfilled with clothes, and somehow can’t find anything to wear for the holidays. I do this every year. Thankfully, it gives me an excuse to shop, and there are so many beautiful outfits that are perfect for the holidays. In this brief holiday series, I show some of my favorite outfits to wear! Growing up in the 90s, my love for music was filled with strong indie female rock singer songwriters and angst-y music. Honestly, not much has changed today. With more energy than ever, Alanis Morissette glided across the stage with full gusto and heart at the Santa Barbara Bowl on September 27th. What Keeps Me Inspired?

It's hard to narrow it down to just one thing. As an actor, I am constantly inspired by my surroundings, struggles, curiosities, and life experiences. My inspiration varies from day to day. The juxtaposition of dark and light, and all that's in between, sparks a fire within me. I’m inspired to write and create stories with my photos. I'm inspired by nature, shapes, shadows, and the mysteries and vulnerabilities they create through imagery and storytelling. Acting, music, and dance constantly inspire my creative spirit and expression of self and my feelings. I'm uplifted by the places I travel to and the unfamiliar foods I (sometimes reluctantly) try. The smell of roses. Trying new things. Stepping outside of my comfort zone. It all drives me to continue to be honest with myself and express my truth creatively and passionately, however that may be.

I'm inspired by my mother, and her strong will to fight against her illness and carry on with a heartwarming smile. I'm inspired by other strong women & peers, especially fellow women of color, who continue to push forward despite the challenges that come their way. I'm inspired by my own obstacles, and the willpower to overcome them.

My clothes also inspire me to be free. It allows me another outlet to express myself. I've never been one to follow trends, and prefer to wear what fits my individuality, mood & personality. Splendid's latest inspires me to be comfortable in my own skin and relish in that freedom. I feel sexy, comfortable, and confident.

As I've become more comfortable as a 30-something, the need for quality of life & quality wear increased with it. Change is Uncomfortable, but Necessary.

Being a women of color (mixed race: African American & Caucasian) has presented it's own unique set of challenges and obstacles through out my life. From being called names, fetishized, been denied work and modeling opportunities because they "...already have one girl with my look," out of a sea of predominantly white women, struggling with advancement in career opportunities, and much more. But I am just one of many people of color and women who have faced difficulties. Still, many of us overcome and choose not to victimize ourselves, and use the problems we face to gain strength. We are living in a crucial time, where the systemic issues of racism and sexism within our country are bubbling to the surface. It is time for everyone to get uncomfortable. Change is uncomfortable, but we cannot learn if we don't. Sure, we can go out and protest, but real change starts with conversation with one another, speaking out, and partaking in the community in various ways. 

Diversity Inclusion with Uber

Some companies and individuals are finally starting to acknowledge these issues and are making an effort and amends toward change and inclusivity. Uber has made major strides towards recognizing its problems and taking the appropriate steps towards changing their company and outlook. Moving Forward is their latest initiative: They're committing to improving relations with their drivers and creating inclusivity among people of color and women. They are taking initiative in offering more leadership career opportunities at the corporate level to minorities and women, and investing into local communities. 2018 is our year; the year where we, women, take charge and show the world we can be successful, empowered, and risk takers. Each generation, women have taken those dangerous leaps to open doors and make way for future opportunities. But sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the mundaneness of life and work in trying so hard to get ahead and prove yourself, as well as get equal footing in the playing field that is a man's world. I loved playing instruments growing up, but as I grew older, taking the time to do that became less and less prevalent in my life, to almost non-existent. I was sidetracked with my writing pursuits. As an actor, I lost focus on honing my craft. Overall, I lost sight of my passions. 

Recently, so many inspirational women recently lit a major fire under my butt, and reminded me that true successful women & artists are the ones who take risks, and don't lose sight of their passions and the things they love in the process. That's why I've partnered up with Uber to show how I'm now taking the time to enjoy the passions I once loved, and to take risks again with my life: from learning the guitar, writing again, and focusing more on my acting. 

There are so many empowering and strong female artists and songwriters that inspire me to play music. The first instrument I learned to play was the clarinet, and from there, I taught myself to play the keyboard. I loved playing music; I'd spend hours practicing each night dance class and homework. I'd spend even more time listening to all kinds of music genres and dissecting it & breaking it down: from the structure, the lyrics & the meaning behind them, and how it made me feel; often times imagining myself either playing along, dancing to it, or in some sort of movie scene I created in my head. I played music for several years and danced for 18, and then just stopped. Life got in the way and became lost on what I enjoy doing. There are no more excuses, because life is too short not take any action. I have been slowly learning guitar on my free time, and it has been such a joy to have music back in my life! Dance is next on my list!

I look up to so many female writers of the past and present, from women writing & directing their own films & TV shows, to the authors that take me to another world inside my head. As a kid, I had dreams & ambitions on becoming an artist AND a mathematician. I'm pretty okay with not pursuing mathematics now (but am in awe of the women who are successful in that field), but am grateful I am living my life the way I want it: as an artist. Within that, I love writing (I always secretly wanted to be a writer) and reading. As a teenager, I wrote out my feelings, the struggles of life, and my silly childhood crushes in my diary. I'd write poetry and short stories. My love for writing carried on in my education and academics, and it showed. I continued into adulthood, but soon lost track on my intent. My love for it suffered in favor of work, money, etc. I lost focus, and it started to become forced and was getting writer's block. While it isn't a bad thing to have such goals (especially when it comes to creating), I've forgotten to just write for myself, and sometimes it's okay to not have to force my writing into some sort of result. The best writing tends to come from those unplanned moments, where you suddenly feel the need to write, and it just flows. It's time I bring that enjoyment and "no pressure" approach and attitude back.

Seeing women in film (especially women of color that looked like me), made me want to be an actress. I was obsessed with the femme fatales & classic beauties of the golden era, the strong black women in B movies in the 70s, and the prominence of more appropriate & strong roles for women, made by women, in present day. I've been a model and actor for 10 years. My love and hard work has opened up so many doors and amazing opportunities I'm grateful for. I've come a long way from where I started. But lately, I've been so caught up focusing on other things, I've forgotten to focus on what I'm truly here for. Whether it's taking a class again, hiring a coach, or just getting together with a group of other actor friends and creating.

Y'all know my love for anything 70s and/or retro styled. This property in Joshua Tree, took us back to another time, which I loved. My best friend and I had a lot of fun shooting around the desert. Que Led Zeppelin's jam, "Ramble On." 

Doing what we do best, we got a little moody, and felt inspired to shoot a bit more of the "in between moments" and cinematic portraiture. I got into the character of longing for someone to come home. These later shots remind me of the cinematic portrait legends of Philip Lorca Dicorcia and Gregory Lawson. If you don't know who they are, you should check them out, because it's beautiful storytelling.

My best friend and I needed a much-needed break out of Los Angeles. I love what I do and where I live, but like many Angelenos, I get a little burnt out and sometimes need to escape for a little r&r. We both love the desert and decided to make a quick, one-day trip to Joshua Tree and Palm Springs and attend the always cool, Rachel Zoe event. The property we stayed at via Airbnb, was insane (in the best way). There were acres of beautiful desert oasis and the coolest retro trailers on the lot. We all shared the blue house, giving the property a real sense of community, which was fun and a new, different experience for me. Everyone I met while staying there was incredibly friendly. The views were breathtaking, and I was entranced by the clear sky and array of shooting stars and constellations at night, reminding me how small we are in this universe. But I digress...this place is magical! We had a blast playing dress-up around the property, like wearing this comfortable Band of Gypsies yellow wrap dress and adorable Cocobelle Papua gladiator sandals. I’m obsessed with the contrast to the blue house, giving it the perfect desert oasis-like feel. We even attempted to get up extra early to catch the sunrise, but we failed miserably, ha. I will definitely be back just so I can shoot and enjoy more of this property! I had the best time here with my friend, giving us the little break we needed from our LA lives and a little bonding time. Sometimes you just need to get away.

As I get older, I find myself enjoying more laid back, casual activities (as opposed to the usual bar hopping I used to do), and champagne brunch has become my way of having a little fun, but keeping it chill. It's a great date option with my boyfriend, as well as the perfect get together for boozy brunch with my girls. There are so many amazing brunch spots to choose from in LA, and Firefly, in Studio City, stands out as one of my new favorites, with their brand new Sunday buffet brunch from 10am to 3pm!

Firefly's buffet brunch has a myriad of food options for an affordable $38 a person, with a small glass of Wycliff champagne on the house: from a custom yogurt & local fruits bar, meat carving station with turkey and beef, made to order omelettes, charcuterie, a raw bar, a hot foods section with eggs, potatoes, & veggies delight, and an array of delicious pastries & desserts, giving you plenty to choose from and enjoy. And yes....ALL YOU CAN EAT!! The food was so tasty, I helped myself to seconds and a large dessert plate (no shame!). There's no shortage of cocktail options either, with a bloody mary and mimosa bar with a fun twist of flavor selects (the mimosas are only 8 bucks a glass!). It's hard to pick a favorite, because I thouroughly enjoyed eating all of it. The ambiance is warm and inviting with a gorgeous patio with cabanas, and I love the rustic, vintage charm of the interior. The service is friendly, quick, and impeccable. They also have live jazz to spice things up a bit! Firefly is located at: 11720 Ventura Blvd. Studio City CA 91604.
