In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Eidos’ president Ian Livingstone said that 2009 will likely be an “all or nothing” year for videogame publishers, with games either becoming high-selling blockbusters or minor titles with unimpressive sales results. Livingstone’s reasoning for such a claim? He highlights the fact that “there’s a glut of product and in a discerning market there is no room for mediocrity. To make a suboptimal game with a suboptimal marketing spend is a recipe for disaster.” Moreover, Livingstone believes the gap between triple A titles and minor games will only widen, with budgets becoming larger and larger for established mainstream franchises.

Grasshopper’s CEO Goichi Suda (Suda51 for the cool people) told Edge the company will need to look beyond the Wii if it wants to evolve No More Heroes further. “I really want to make NMH a big franchise,” he said, “and with this second episode have a bigger success. I’m putting a lot of care into developing this IP, as I feel there’s a lot of potential.”

Although the Wii has a larger install base, a combination of struggling sales for third-party hardcore games and aspirations that can’t be realized on the console has led Suda to look for other, next-gen consoles. “I think this is the last NMH that is gong to be developed on Wii,” he said. “To expand NMH to new possibilities, we need a new platform. Wii is a great platform, but we’ve done everything we can with it now.”

Considering the work put into the first, and Suda’s comments for the future of the franchise, it will be all the more interesting to see how well Desperate Struggle does when it comes out.

Dead Island came, got us all interested, and then disappeared without even saying “see you soon, honey!” As it turns out, all the blame for why we haven’t written about Techland’s tropical zombie fest since our interview with the company back in April of last year can be put on the worldwide publisher they’ve found for the game. “I can understand how impatient our fans must be to see more news and assets from Dead Island,” Techland’s international brand manager Blazej Krakowiak told G4. “Unfortunately our agreement with the game’s worldwide publisher imposed a media silence on us. All we are allowed to say is that the game is in development and doing great and that all future updates regarding the game will come directly from the publisher.”

Who the publisher for the title is is anyone’s guess at this point, though it should be noted that Techland’s last two releases, Call of Juarez and the more recent Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood, were both put on the shelves by Ubisoft.

Twitter has become THE place for breaking news of all sorts; Iran, celebrity deaths, iPhone giveaways. All of these have been heard first from the tweets of various people, so no big surprise that someone let slip that another addition to the Skate franchise would be forthcoming. “I just got told ‘tonight we gotta celebrate’, one of the bro’s got offered to be in SKATE 3,” tweeted Schmitty of Epicly Trife, a Skate website.

Kotaku’s attempts to reach EA for comment have gone unanswered, but we turned on the old TVGB charm and got some answers. According to Shirley Chu, Public Relations for EA, “The Skate team is currently focused on Skate 2 DLC. We have no further announcements planned at this time.”

Yeah, we got the touch.

Fret Nice, Swedish developer Pieces Interactive’s guitar peripheral-controlled platformer, has come a long way since its international debut at the 11th Annual Independent Games Festival. Though World of Goo ultimately took home the top prize for design innovation, Fret Nice’s photo-collage visuals, innovative control mechanics and infectious original music impressed Tecmo enough to acquire the rights, with plans to bring the quirky title to Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network next year.

In this first official trailer, we get a closer look at how the 2D-platformer will put your spare Guitar Hero or Rock Band controllers to work, allowing you to jump (whammy bar), race (fret buttons), and swing (strum bar) through vibrant Loco Roco-esque levels, blastin’ enemies with wicked riff combos along to the rockin’ soundtrack. And I do mean rockin’. The quirky music really brings this vibrant and visually charming title to life, making me wish the Vibrant Chordblasters were a real band. The Hair Bängers too.

Analyst Todd Mitchell, who works for Kaufman Bros. Equity Research, believes there’s going to be quite a bit of Grand Theft Auto stuff coming out in the next few years, including two new pieces of GTA4 downloadable content in fiscal 2010. “I would expect that there would be two more pieces of downloadable content for GTA IV, that’s what has been indicated to me, although formats are unsure,” Mitchell told gi.biz. Next up is Grand Theft Auto V, of course, which Mitchell thinks will be released during 2011, and that after that’s out Take-Two “can come back with more franchises and not be forced to rely on that every other year.”

Finally, Mitchell believes there will be a title on the PS2 sometime in the future as well, saying a port of GTA: Chinatown Wars from the PSP could be a possibility, “I’m least confident in saying for sure there will be a new GTA for PlayStation 2, but the track record shows that PSP titles have been repositioned (on PS2).”

Major Nelson made a post in response to the uproar from the community over the possibility of more advertising on Xbox 360’s Dashboard, basically telling us all to chillax. According to Nelson, the introduction of Silverlight to the dashboard will not increase the number of ads, but is being integrated in order to enhance the ads we see.

“Silverlight will help make those ads a more organic part of the dashboard, like we’ve done with some of the NXE slots in the past,” says Major Nelson. He continues by stating that Microsoft works directly with “our partners to only deliver experiences that are relevant to the LIVE community.”

This statement, of course, has not stemmed the tide of people comparing Xbox Live to their local cable service and MySpace.

The spy RPG, due to be released on October 6, can be seen in the above video featuring some of the developers talking about how the interactions you perform affect your character in the game. Never knowing who to trust, who is your ally, or what happens if you sex up the Russian woman, could be the cause for many restarted games.

Actually, it sounds like a page from the diary of our editor-in-chief.

Valve loves me, Valve loves me not. Valve loves me, Valve loves me not. This is what you might overhear if you were to listen in on a PS3 in a field playing with a flower trying to figure out what its relationship with Valve is. Apparently the on again off again relationship is on again. Valve’s man about town Doug Lombardi reveals that PS3 support is a matter of getting the right people. “If you look at The Orange Box — PC: 96 on Metacritic, 360: 96 on Metacritic, PS3 like… 84 or something. That’s not even close to where we are right now with the 360 and PC and the reason is people,” he explains and also reveals that Valve is looking to get the right people. “..we have to get people under our roof who are dedicated, talented PS3 guys and then all bets are off.”

This is great news for PS3 fans who don’t have other platforms to play Valve games on as it certainly looks like PS3 will eventually get supported but by Valve directly, meaning players will get more than just a crappy port. Of course this is all new developments and it’s apparent they’re still working on assembling a team but this news likely means serious support for the PS3 sometime in the future. So if you’re a skilled PS3 developer looking for work, I’m sure Valve would love to hear from you.
