Entertainment will partner with Time Warner sister company Cartoon Network on a daylong “booth takeover” initiative. On Sunday, July 24, at Comic-Con International: San Diego, the Warner Bros. booth — with its distinctive 30-foot tall replica of the iconic Warner Bros. water tower — will transform overnight into the Cartoon Network booth to create a fun, family friendly environment designed just for kids.

The collaboration on the music video continues the longstanding relationship between the band and the series that was established in 2007 when The Big Bang Theory creators Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady — who are fans of the band — asked Barenaked Ladies’ singer/guitarist Ed Robertson to pen a theme song for the series as a “sort of history of everything … in about 32 seconds.”

The band later made a surprise appearance at The Big Bang Theory’s panel session at Comic-Con International: San Diego 2010, performing the song, complete with an audience sing-along.

Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution will feature the video in its campaign to support the off-network launch of The Big Bang Theory in syndication this fall. The 8th Installment of J.K. Rowlings's Epic Tale Concludes with High Action, Drama & Love

The only thing slow about Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2 was the line to get into the theatre.

Directed by David Yates, the eighth and final installment in the blockbuster franchise is an action packed adventure that masterfully concludes the beloved series in a battle of epic proportions. Faster paced and more closely following the book than previous films, HPATDHP2 is a visually stunning emotional tale of duality; life and death, good and evil, redemption and damnation.
This is the first of the eight films to utilize the widely popular 3D technology. And use it they did. The enhanced images explode from the screen resulting in a richer more magical atmosphere than prior films in the series. In this case, the use of 3D heightens the depth and dimension of the film rather than detracting from it.

Opening where the last movie left off, a triumphant sneer is splayed across Lord Voldemort’s (Ralph Fienes) serpentine features as he desecrates Dumbledore’s grave and claims the wizarding world’s strongest tool, the Elder Wand. As Voldemort, Death Stick in hand, continues to search for Harry (Daniel Radcliff), our heroic trio resumes their pursuit for the remaining Horcruxes.

Aided by the Goblin Griphook (Warwick Davis), Harry, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson) in the guise of Bellatrix (Helena Bonham Carter) visit Gringotts and endure a harrowing coaster ride that would leave even the most seasoned amusement park rider dizzy.

An amazing film with a truly stellar British cast, HPATDHP2 delivers several notable performances; from Professor McGonagall (Dame Maggie Smith) aptly using the magic she has so devotedly taught for decades, to the lovable but bumbling Neville Longbottom (Matthew Lewis) who once again stands up for what is right in the face of insurmountable odds. But, it is Alan Rickman’s brilliant portrayal of Professor Snape that is one of the most poignant of the film with a series of flashbacks that left nary a dry eye in the theatre.

The intense on screen battle dominates roughly half the film. Leaving a trail of destruction reminiscent of a World War 2 blitz in their wake, Death Eaters smoky forms zip and buzz through the castle while giants and stone guardians face off on the front lines. With all battles, friends are lost and families are torn apart. An overwhelming sense of despair settles over our heroes as the catastrophic number of casualties is realized. Recognizing there is only one thing to do, Harry bravely becomes the martyr to enable his friends to live.

The subsequent overt religious imagery provides a striking contrast to the otherwise dark themes as we find Harry and Dumbledore bathed in white light. God-like in appearance with cascading robes and an ethereal glow, Dumbledore counsels Harry, as he has become what many have long considered him to be, a savior.

Setting up the final confrontation, an imprisoned Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane) gently cradles Harry’s form as Voldemort again marches on the castle. This time, to claim victory and demand fealty. Harry jumps out of Hagrid’s arms as a stunned Voldemort scrambles to regain control of the situation while protecting what is left of his fractured soul.

Having come full circle, the end is as it started and was always supposed to be; Harry and Voldemort, facing off in a battle of good vs. evil, love vs. hate, light vs. dark.

The film concludes with a glimpse into the future and the promise of happy tomorrows for our trio.

At times, certain scenes felt a bit rushed. Such was the case with the showdown between the fiercely protective Molly Weasley (Julie Walters) and the sadistic Bellatrix Lestrange. There were also attempts by Screenwriter Steve Kloves to lighten the mood by inserting quips and comedic moments. While most worked, some did fall flat. Regardless, the resulting film is a dazzling epic that will be enjoyed by generations to come.

Harry Potter is not only the boy who lived, he is the boy who grew up before our eyes, stole our hearts & brought JK Rowlings magical world to life.

We Need More Bryll Schultz' In The Classroom

Today is a very sad day in the Morden home. It is not just the end of a school year. Today marks the day our son's teacher retires. Mr. Bryll Schultz is by far the most amazing educator to ever grace the halls of Colfax Charter Elementary. Teachers like him should be celebrated and praised. Instead, they are forced into an early retirement by a system that sees them as the problem when in reality, it is the flawed system that is beyond repair. All too often, the drive for more money from the states coffers eclipses and outweighs a solid educational foundation at a primary school level. Striving for high test scores has become the norm. The focus of many schools has shifted from learning to test taking because of the financial rewards for high scores. This approach, I believe, has caused the degeneration of California's public schools. Our state has steadily declined in educational rankings. The inception of California's Public Schools Accountability Act has only made the decline worse. It is a travesty that schools are more concerned with children being able to test well than to actually gain the tools to help them truly learn. I vehemently believe one of the reason California's schools are suffering is because the focus has shifted from learning to the drill and kill method of teaching the standardized test. For 2010, California ranked number 46 out of 50 states according to StateMaster.com.

We are blessed Declan was assigned to Mr. Schultz class. After the turbulent year, Declan's one constant was Mr. Schultz. As sad as I am that Mr. Schultz is retiring (tearfully so), I am most sad that future children won't know the wit, caring or encouragement from someone who doesn't teach for a paycheck but does so because he actually gives a damn. At the same time, we are lucky to know that what Mr. Schultz has given Declan is something that will play a prominent role in his life...forever. Declan gained practical knowledge. He gained the ability to think more critically. He knows the easy road is not always the best. He knows that his opinion is important even if it goes against the masses. Mr. Schultz has fostered not only a love for learning, but also a sense of self worth in my child. I will forever be grateful. Mr. Schultz, saying thank you will never be enough.

English singer-songwriter Bobby Long has built a devoted following the past few years through fine storytelling and confessionals inspired greatly by the sounds of Americana and contemporary folk. Playing solo and then, last year, with a backing band of indie musicians, fleshing out the tunes just right, he’s gone from shy Brit lad to a more confident, though still humble artist. So what happened at his recent Troubadour appearance in West Hollywood?

The performance had its moment, but the essence of his appeal was often hammered away by his quite slick three-man band, of obvious session and tour pros. As result, one number wouldn’t work, while another left many fans wondering if they’d ever hear the more stripped-down beloved version again.

That was certainly the case for “Who’ve You Been Loving,” one of his shots at a sing-a-long hit, which was rocked up, losing all the tune’s bittersweet charm. In other cases, pedal steel drenched songs as though crying out, “look, this is almost country.”

This isn’t to say there weren’t moving pieces, such as “Bounty of Mary Jane,” and “A Stranger’s Song.”

When the band left the stage and Long played a couple of songs solo some of the heart and soul that seemed to be missing returned. And the band wasn’t always heavy handed. The slight weepy steel accompanying him for the ballad “Dead and Done,” was just the right touch, rather than the overbearing playing through much of the set. And it was hard to tell when Long strapped on an electric guitar for more of a jam than anything else whether he was enjoying it because it looked so forced.

It’s hard to understand what ATO’s thinking is here. You have an artist, albeit still growing, but already with a distinctive style and you try to turn the man into a band? The move was disappointing and even, at times, distasteful, and that’s too bad. Because there’s still no doubt that Long’s a talented songwriter and inviting singer.

On another side note, trading in his jeans and flannel shirt for all black including a jacket came off as image calculation – GQ or something like that - matching the spiffy-dressed other players. Some were fine with it all, but others were left wondering, what happened to the artist that touched them? Those seeing him for the first time may well have thought he was good, with no idea how much better he's been. Here’s hoping he gets to pull back the band a bit to scale down things, less is more definitely a truth here.

In contrast, the night’s support band was a wonderful discovery, in fact a delight. He’s My Brother, She’s My Sister is an unsigned Los Angeles band fronted by brother Robert Kolar on guitar and also bass drums (which is behind him and he thumps with the heel of one foot) and sister Rachel Kolar on vocals and percussion. The band includes upright bass/cello, lap steel guitar, a drummer on snare and cymbal, plus a tap dancer!

The group’s sound is eclectic mix of circus or carnival rock, Vaudeville by way of New Orleans swamp blues and flashes of off-center folk and quirky cabaret. The songs, including the lively “Lazy Daze' and "Coattails," and catchy “Tales That I Tell" were thumpy and organic, with a slinky, sexy appeal, too. The band was fun from song one. Keep an eye on this playful troupe, they're on to something.

Blu-Ray/DVD Review: 'Sorcerer's Apprentice'

It seemed to come and go at theaters earlier this year, but Disney’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is now on Blu-ray and DVD and truly is a fun film, loaded with creative effects, but also grounded in a story that bodes well for not just a sequel, but perhaps a francise of several movies.

Very (very) loosely based on the same-named segment in Disney’s classic Fantasia, the movie spans a millennia though most of the setting is modern-day New York, though with arcane touches right of Dr. Strange comics and the like.

Nicholas Cage as Balthazar Blake is a one-time disciple of none other than Merlin, while Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel from Fanboys, Tropic Thunder) is, but of course, the one he's been seeking for centuries. And he becomes the apprentice. Alfred Molina relishes his role at bad guy wizard Maxim Horvath. Add Teresa Palmer and Monica Bellucci as love interests for each hero, and a creepy Alice Krige (The Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact) and you have a solid cast, well-guided by director John Turteltaub, though Cage is the real anchor here.

And the magic through movie magic? It’s quite stellar and also different from say, the land of Potter, with links to science, including a big nod to the work and creatins of Nikola Telsa. Everything looks best on Blu-ray, though the DVD is quite vivid as well. And yes, the Fantasia scene is there, cleverly done, with the music of Paul Dukas, which all was inspired by a 1797 poem by Goethe.

For those who enjoy behind-the-scenes material, the documentaries provide much insight as fascinating looks at how it all came to together, especially the special effects.

So this is another score for Jerry Bruckheimer and family-friendly all the way, too, with only a few harrowing moments for the littlest ones, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice is watchable and winning and would make a nice little holiday gift in any format. Print up a limited time discount coupon here.

There are fanboy and fangirl squeal delights to be seen - Abin Sur, Killowog, Sinestro, Hector Hammond and other names from Green Lantern lore. It looks as though star Ryan Reynolds plays Hal Jordan cocky, but not for laughs. And that could be good.I could go through it bit by bit....but why don't you just check it out. I'm sure stoked. DVD/Blu-ray Reviews: Scott Pilgrim, Sound of Music, A Christmas Carol

While Scott Pilgrim is not the "game changer" that Rolling Stone claimed it is, this is still a clever, fun film. The action sequences play out like a video game (as does a variation on the Universal Pictures opening) contrasted by other segments that are somewhat like an indie film albeit with plenty of quirks. Having yet to read the comics it was based on by Bryan Lee O'Malley, I can't say if it's a faithful adaptation, but it is a hoot, as an indie rock bassist (Michael Cera, doing his standard bewildered clueless slackeresque guy thing) must battle the "evil exes" of the girl of his dreams (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). This isn't a super-hero film, far from it, though the exes and Scott , it turns out, all have super-powers of some kind. Those parts are surely absurd and ridiculous, but nonetheless sheer entertainment with slugfests of mayhem and references ranging from Bollywood to The Matrix movies to a slew of vid games. The final resolution and attempt at some depth - as the characters are pretty shallow people or caricatures overall, truth be told - doesn't quite work. But that doesn't make Scott Pilgrim a less-enjoyable wacky ride. Both the DVD and especially the Blu-ray are chock full of extras, from commentaries and alternate footage to a making-of documentary about how it all came together, a music featurette and music videos, plus pre-production footage, too. One thing's for sure, the movie does beam with an earnest sense of hope and that can't really be said of this year's earlier, far more violent and cynical Kick-Ass.

Along with Mary Poppins, which of course, also starred Julie Andrews, The Sound of Music defines family film, even some 45 years after its initial release. Adapting the story of the Von Trapp Family Singers, this film version by director Robert Wise of the musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein (in fact, their final work together, as Hammerstain died from cancer nine months after the Broadway premiere, so he didn't live to see the movie) remains beloved around the world. And for good reasons. There are those songs: The title number, "My Favorite Things," "Do Re Mi," "The Lonely Goatherd" among them, so magical and yes, innocent with delight. Then there's the acting: Andrews shines as Maria, who leaves the nuns in the Abbey where she was raised to become the governess for the Von Trap children and falls in love with their seemingly stern Austrian Navy Captain father, Christopher Plummer, who falls in love with her as well. And there's the backdrop of the Nazis in Austria and that threat. A few may cry "hokey," but then, they really have no heart. The film looks gorgeous in Blu-ray and it still charms, once again. Special features include a Music Machine Sing-Along, a viewing version with on-screen lyrics and trivia, commentaries with Andrews, Plummer and Wise. The Blu-ray includes a virtual map of the filming locations, screen tests and featurettes about the stage show, film and restoration. In addition to the Blu-ray/DVD Combo and individual format releases, there's a grand Limited Edition Collector's Set. But any version is a wonderful family holiday gift this season.

Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol will be presented again and again in films, on television and on-stage because its story resonates for every generation as a tale of a greedy, self-centered man discovering what it truly means to bring hope and joy into the lives of others. This CGI animated version by Robert Zemeckis with Jim Carrey as not just Scrooge but many of the other characters, has its moments, but tries to hard at times (one can't see it joining the holiday classic ranks like Zemeckis' Polar Express). Still, as with much animation, it looks stunning in Blu-ray, though the DVD is fine as well. Carrey's a bit too hammy a Scrooge, though the performances - and they are really are that, not just voice acting, thanks to the technique of motion capture - of Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Robin Wright Penn and Cary Elwes are quite good. A behind the scenes feature explores the process, plus there are deleted scenes and a look at the challenges of bringing something new to the holiday story that's still sums it up with lines from the chain oppressed ghost of miser Jacob Marley as written by Dickens: "Business! Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were all my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!" There's a lesson there for plenty of ranting political pundits on TV and radio and politicians and executives all over this country - and around the globe.

The Long Beach Comic Con kicks off this Friday, October 30 at the Long Beach Convention Center and runs through Halloween, Sunday, October 31. Costumes are encouraged every day, of course. Interview: 'Back to the Future' Trilogy Writer-Producer Bob Gale, Blu-ray/DVD Review

A quarter-century ago, the world fell in love with a time-travel adventure about a teenager, his dysfunctional family and his closest friend, a nutty, yet brilliant professor. Back to the Future was a huge hit in the summer of 1985 and followed with two successful sequels, one dystopian futuristic, the other, well, a western with a touch of steampunk before the term was being bandied about.
As Marty McFly, Michael J. Fox and as Doc Brown, Christopher Lloyd, became part of childhoods and also memorable characters for movie-goers of all ages. And let's not forget that car. ("You built a time machine out of A DeLorean?!!"). Many famous folks are fans. Just this past July, Family Guy and American Dad creator Seth McFarlane bought one of the Back to the Future DeLoreans, so there ya go.
While all three films have been collected on DVD before, they've now been released by Universal Home Entertainment on Blu-ray as the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy, looking, in so many ways, better than ever and as fresh as when they each first hit the big screen. There are numerous deleted scenes that include a six-part look at the trilogy with new interviews featuring Fox, Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Director Robert Zemeckis, Producers Bob Gale and Neil Canton plus Executive Producer Steven Spielberg, "making-of" featurettes and "The Physics of Back To The Future" with author and physicist Dr. Michio Kaku. The package is also loaded with plenty of outtakes looks at production design, storyboards, designing the mythical town of "Hill Valley," music videos commentaries/Q&As from Zemeckis, Gale and Canton
In addition to co-producing the trilogy, Bob Gale co-wrote Back to the Future with writing partner and director Robert Zemeckis and also write the screenplays for both sequels. He couldn't be more thrilled about the Blu-ray format release.

Bob Gale: "If you remember, Universal had invested heavily in HD and had, I think done a transfer of Back to the Future, which of course, turned out to be to be waste of money. We were waiting to find out if high definition was really going to take off and thought that we could, in fact, do this in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the series' start. So a year ago, we started rattling cages, 'It's the 25th, let's get on it." Someone said, we're not going to by able to get it out July 3rd (the film release anniversary] so let's bring it out on the anniversary of the year Marty McFly went back to to the future, October 26, 1985.

That Writer Guy: The three films now cross several generations. Kids who watched them in the '80s are now adults and their children have seen it on home video. Parents who took those kids in the '80s are now grandparents. What do you see as the appeal? A number of factors at work?

BG: It's part of the pop consciousness now and such a goofball thing, too. Part of the strength of the appeal of the movies is everybody can identify with the characters, everybody knows these characters. Marty can't figure out his parents, his father's a nerd set upon a bully and the intimidating bully isn't really as strong as he seems; there's the lovesick girl [his mom in that past] and Doc Brown, who's somebody of ground and wisdom and little bit of insanity, too. We're telling a human story about somebody's family. I think what keeps the movies interesting from generation to generation is all over world is that moment we finally comprehend our parents were children, too. We see it in old photographs, the clothes last year that don't fit, that evolution of finaally finding out how sex works and we go, 'No way my parents could have done that." We realize "my parents could have done that," my parents were children, the must have had a first date. And the movie totally captures that and just connects.

That Writer Guy: We've seen DVD, Blu-ray releases where special effects were given upgrades, scenes were added. What were the feelings about that kind of approach?

BG: What we did with the DVD and Blu-ray is we went back to the elements. Seeing a release print made from negatives, some of the earlier elements, like in Part Two, some wires you can see, so we took those wires out. That would have been part of the process of making movies. But we did not enhance anything. We improved some color corrections. We took the two-track Dolby sound and mixed it in surround and it now sounds better than it did in 1985. But other than that, we didn't change anything.

That Writer Guy: There are plenty of great behind the scenes bonus feature material, including the scientific possibilities or impossibilities of the science in the films from Dr. Kaku.

BG: Universal said, if we're going to do this, do it right and I've got to give these guys credit. Truth it, we didn't have much money to do new supplemental stuff, we didn't have the budget. So Universal spent the money to do it all in Hi-Def. These people are fans of the movies. Kaku is a fan. I've read his books. This guy's a people are fan sof the movies...kaku fan of movie, read his book, this guy's got a TV show on Discovery's Science Channel.

If you talk to people about the series, each person has a favorite; some love the original film, others the second one, which like many trilogies is somewhat 'dark.' And then there's the whole western twist with the final movie. When people meet you, what kind of questions do they ask?

BG: Each film has it's own personality, how great is that? But they also ask, is there ever going to be a part four? No. Then, it depends on who they are. A little kid might ask how did we get hoverboard ot fly and how does he get one? Everyobdy has favorite movie, a favorite part of one of the movies and we do get asked a lot of questions. But it's always is there going to be a Part 4? But without Michael J. Fox? Who wants to see it without him? WE told the story we wanted to tell and at the end of Part 3, we say this is the end. History has shown us that some of these franchises that go back too many time, the results aren't that satisfying. What Back to the Future 4 would be in everybody's minds would be so much better than what we could put on the screen or so different that we'd rather do new original stuff.

That Writer Guy: I've seen some boards talk about how an animated series would work again [there was one in the early '90s]. Also, isn't there a new game on the way?

BG: Yes. Telltale Games has a Back to the Future game coming out sometime this winter. Christopher Lloyd is doing the voice, Michael J. Fox recorded some of his lines to be used. These guyrs are really fans of the movies, working hard to capture the spirit of them in this game. This is going to be pretty good. I haven't seen the actual game, but in terms of what they've been doing conceptually, trying to pull of a game, it's not Part 4, but it's sort of like trying to take a melody and give it to a jazz ensemble and they riff on it. That's what's happening here.

Halloween is, of course, big-time fun for children of all ages, including us grown-ups still much in touch with that inner child (some might say too much, but we like it that way, right?).
With the holiday of costumes, ghosts, goblins, witches, monsters, and yes, super-hero and other outfits, too, there are wonderful tales out there for kids. And the Scholastic Storybook Treasures series of books on DVD series has released The Halloween Stories Collection.
With readings by the Elle Fanning and Calista Flockhart, the tales here include "A Very Brave Witch," "By the Light of the Halloween Moon," "The Teacher From the Black Lagoon," "The Witch in the Cherry Tree," Maurice Sendak's classics "Where the Wild Things Are," and "In the Night Kitchen" and other delightful tales, none of which are really scary at all for little one. It's more about oohs and aaahs.
And looking ahead to holiday gifts for children beyond toys, sets such Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics and the new Treasury of 100 Storybook Classics 2 make for wonderful compliments to those beloved books that have now spanned generations. Guest-Posting: The History of Halloween and Celtic Traditions

Halloween. A time of festivity. Children squeal with delight and run down the streetlight lit walkways with bags full of sweets and colorful costumes which depict every type of monster, superhero, or animal one could possibly dream up. Halloween has come far from it's pre-Christian beginnings yet some of its traditions are still held onto by unsuspecting participants.

The ancient Druids were believed to be the founders of a holiday that went by the name of Samhain. Some say that Samhain was a holiday that stemmed in the celebration of a Celtic god of the dead named Saman. His official role was “The Lord of The Dead”. He was said to release evil phantoms and spirits upon the land, that would terrorize humanity.

The Pagans believe that Samhain is actually a Celtic celebration for “summer's end”. It's said that ancient Celtic people believed that the summer ended on October 31, thus they celebrated the beginning of a new year, or cycle on the following day, November 1. The ancient Celtic people started celebrating holidays the evening before, hence celebrating on the 31st of October.

Traditionally, Celtic people who celebrated Samhain, would gather at night on October 31st and set huge bonfires that they would then burn sacrifices of crops and animals in to honor various Celtic deities. This was seen as a payment to the Gods and Goddesses. The burnt offerings were a way of giving the gods their fair share of the year's crops and herds.

The fire also represented a way of “cleansing”, a way of preparing for the new year by parting with the energy or material of the previous one.

The Celts would also dance and sing around the bonfires dressed in colorful costumes. The dancing was a way of honoring the deceased, since they also believed that on the eve of Samhain the spirits of the dead would be set free to wander from the underworld. Though the dancing and singing was meant to honor not only the Gods and Goddesses, but also the spirits, there was believed to be a need for protection from malevolent, evil spirits that meant to harm during their release from the realm of the dead. That is where the need for costumes came into being. By dressing up, the Celtic people would frighten off these bad spirits and not endure any harm or attacks by them.

The creation of Halloween has its beginnings rooted in the destruction of a pagan tradition, like so many other holidays that are celebrated in the present day. Pope Boniface IV created a holiday by the name of “All Hallows Eve” that was to take place on October 31st. Most scholars believe that the Pope was trying to make an easier transition from the pagan ways of the Celts to the Christian ways of the church. Several other holidays were created to bridge the divide between church and pagans such as “All Saints Day” and “All Souls' Day”. These church sanctioned holidays became muddled into one holiday (All Hallows Eve).

As people began to immigrate from the Celtic lands of Britain, Ireland, and Scotland, they brought their traditions with them. In Britain, All Souls' Day was celebrated by giving pastries known as “soul cakes” to the poor in exchange for prayers to the deceased relatives of the givers. It is believed that this is where the practice of “trick-or-treating” evolved from.

So, as you can see, Halloween is a combination of ancient practices that have melded into one secular holiday that is celebrated by many. It would seem safe to say that although this holiday started out with religious and traditional influences, it has become a holiday of pure fun...a holiday for amusement. This year when out trick-or-treating or dancing at a party with that “hot vampire” remember that you are actually participating in some very old traditions that stretch back more than 2000 years.

DVD Review: 'Legend of the Seeker' Complete Season Two

It wasn't sheer genius or must-see, but Legend of the Seeker was nonetheless a diverting swords-and-sorcery romp the likes of which had been missing on TV and its cancellation is not a happy thing. Season One was a big sluggish as there was an "origins" story to be told, character devlopment in progress and the show had to find its footing. With Season Two, now available on DVD, there were more story arcs and sub-plots are things generally moved along a better pace as well. So it's too bad the show is now gone and the longer story won't be completed.
Based on the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind, the series core cast - the stoic Craig Horner, (who's young man lead role loosened up a bit in Season Two), the fetching and feisty Bridget Regan, and addled yet wise wizard Bruce Spence - arrived at working chemistry. Add Mord Sith Cara (Tabrett Bethell) plus more shades to the sinister Darken Rahl big bad and you have a fantasy frolic that beats the heck out of opportunist competing on some remote island for money. You've got a quest, you've got mysterious magic, strange rituals, snide and sinister bad guys, heroes with big hearts yet doubts, and more. Yes, cheesy elements do recall the '90s era of similar syndicated fare - Hercules and Xena, that was part of the fun, wasn't it?
There's not a lot in the way of bonus material, but a look at Cara is interesting, especially for fans of the source material books, while a behind-the-scenes featurette about the Underworld is pretty good, though. actually a lot of fun, even if you are mostly a fan only of the books. There are also extended scenes, but none are the kind that makes one say "gee, that should've been in the show).
So, while Legend of the Seeker is pretty much Lord of the Rings-ish lite, the second season collection is more of the same, yet better then the first seaason and if you were or become a fan, you'll cling to the hop the story might be completed in some way, if even just a a direct-to-video film.

LBCC exhibitors this year include Boom! Music Review: Kid-Friendly Halloween-Anytime Monster Fun from Kiddle Karoo

Most children love monsters, Disney's Monster Inc. surely reminded us of that. And for the younger ones especially, it's the silly, fuzzy, furry, frisky ones they love the most. And Kiddle Karoo offers a monstrously fun time for children - and parents - on her album Silly Monster House Party.

Kiddle Karoo is the children's entertainment performing name of Lisa Clyde, who puts on shows all around Southern California, from holiday-themed events to eco-encouraging works, all geared towards kids of elementary school age and younger.
The album's lead-off track, "Monster Party" is zippy pop rock invitation, followed by rap-lite "Monstas in the House, while "Monster Boogie" is a take-off on "The Hokey Pokey." There;s running little storyline between songs with dialogue and jokes that will also engage kids and probably elicit giggles, too.
The song "Silly Monsters" is a real-stand out as the tune (and its video) could - and should - get discovered by Disney or Nik with its very-'80s minor key melody and Muppet-ish backing vocals. The chipper, hand-clappy "Kiddle Rock" is another catchy tune, along with "5 Little Monsters," which sort of plays on the kids' favorite "Monkeys Jumping on the Bed," with a dance-happy percusion and guitar breakdown.
A cover of the classic "Swinging on a Star," which dates back 65 years to Bing Crosby singing it in Going My Way and the song winning an Oscar, fits well here through a contemporary pop arrangement. The playful and funky "Kiddle La Kid," recalls Blondie (really, it does!) and "Silly Monsters Had a Party" takes off on "Old MacDonald Had a Farm" in a bopping rendition.

Annual Ventura Seaside Highland Games, AKA 'The Scottish Fair'

The official name is the Seaside Highland Games, but around our house, we call it "The Scottish Fair." This is a very much a family event with music, crafts, dance, and many a Clan represented on Ventura County Fairgrounds taking place this weekend, October 9-10 in Ventura, Calif.

The two-day event, taking place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday night, October 8, there will be a special Scottish evening, 6-10 p.m. at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel in Ventura.
The Seaside Games and fair will feature yes, actual traditional Scottish games, also known as "large men throwing heavy things"; a fiddling competition; dozens of Clan booths by name, from your Mac... and Mc.... to more; combat renactment; a children's glen for play and crafts; pavilions with vendors of all kinds, including foods and clothing; darts for fun and competitiom; classic cars; traditional Scottish and British food; Highland and traditional Scottish social dancing; and, of course a bounty of bagpipe bands.

Home Video Review: 'Superman/Batman: Apocalypse'

The latest direct-to-video PG-13 from Warner Bros. Animation/DC Entertainment, Superman/Batman Apocalypse is a pretty solid adaptation of the comic book story arc and graphic novel Superman/Batman: Supergirl. So why all the dislike? No, it's not quite spectacular, but it's certainly engaging and for fans of Jack's Kirby's Fourth World, a definite treat.
First, a little background for those perhaps not firmly entrenched in DC Comics and character history. First, we have the "Silver Age" Supergirl, who first appeared in the late '50s and then gave her life to save all during DC's epic Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1985. The issue with Superman holding her dead body is one of those iconic images in comic book history. As Superman's origin was rebooted, there was no Supergirl, until the arrival of an eco-plasmic being from another dimension merged with an angel (what?? you say. Yes, so did fans, though some liked her much). But she went away, too. Then, writer Jeph Loeb with late artist Michael Turner brought her back in the pages of Superman/Batman comics. And that story is adapted for the animated film.

The end of Silver Age Supergirl

Much of the movie pulls scenes right out of the comics, down the dialogue. And if you were a fan of the original story, then it works very well - a meteor containing a ship with Kara Zor-El inside crashes into Gotham City Harbor. She wanders the streets starkers, lost. Batman finds her, takes her to the Batcave and then Superman arrives. The Kryptonese speak is there. The pithy, sharp exchanges between Bruce and Clark (with them it's almost never Batman and Superman" voiced by Kevin Conroy and Tim Daly is spot on, as with all their animated work together on the DC characters, going back to the mid-90s). There are some added scenes of Clark and Kara, dressed as an earth girl, shopping in Metropolis that's all new and kind of cute, really and Summer Glau pulls off teen emotion push-and-pull as Kara/Supergirl. The arrival of Wonder Woman, voiced by Susan Eisenberg from Justice League, completes the "Big Three."
When Darkseid (Andre Brougher), lord of the hellish plant Apokolips and without a doubt the greatest DC Comics big bad of the past 40 years finds out about "the girl who fell out of the sky" he wants her and is going to have her at his side and lead his Furies, overseen by the sinister Granny Goodness (Ed Asner reprising his past voice role as the evil witch-type). Again, most of it follows the comics closely: Former Apokolips denizen Big Barda (but no mention of husband Mister Miracle, just a view of his outfit), plus the perhaps the greatest dramatic moment of all, Batmans face-off against Darkseid, human versus New God.

The biggest flaws come at the very end and really, only for those who have read the comics or graphic novels. it all still works quite well. In the film, and sorry *spoiler* time, Superman brings down Darkseid in a giant slugfest with the help of Supergirl instead of his utter furty unleased taking the massively powerful evil one through a "Boom Tube" to be imprisoned in the mysterious (and Kirby-created, of course) "Source Wall". Instead, Kara uses a "Mother Box" to reprogram the Tube to send him somewhere floating in deep space. Also, in the comics ending, Supergirl is officially introduced to a gathering of the JLA, JSA, Teen Titans, and Outsiders. That many characters too much for the animators? Too bad. Instead, her audience is just the Amazons of Paradise Island, plus the rest of the main cast in the film.
There are a few other quibbles - Clark's parents returning to the Kent farm from Smallville in their truck to find things demolished and Clark and Kara sheepish about it. It's a touch of comedy, though not as endearing as repairs by some Justice League members (J'onn J'onzz shown in the comics with a hammer and nail); Also Bruce telling Clark his feelings for Kara are not unlike his attachment, perhaps, to Dick Grayson when he left the role of Robin to become Nightwing. But again, those are small points.
In addition to plenty of bonus material on the Two-Disc DVD Special Edition and Blu-ray, the release also features the latest DC Showcase short, spotlighting Green Arrow and a certain pretty bird lady. It's fast-moving, captures the spirit of the emerald archer right away and is just terrific.
So, it's hard to fathom why this feature film has been met by some in comics and mainstream media with thumb's down. It's actually a step up from the Superman/Batman Public Enemies animated versioin of that graphic novel, which was fun enough, but lacking from too many characters cut out, plot points lost. Most of all, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, makes a genuine comics fan hope for a DC Universe animated tale about that Kirby-verse within it, bringing us more of Darkseid and the New Gods, such as Orion, Lightray, Mister Miracle and maybe even the Forever People, too. Now that would be quite, well, super.

Concert Review: Carrie Underwood at Hollywood Bowl

Carrie Underwood fans believe she can do no wrong. And that's okay, because that's the way some fans are. Now me, I'm up front when I've thought any of those I admire in music or other art forms don't live up to expectations. But, as it's been said, none are so blind as....well, you get the idea.
Underwood and Kelly Clarkson are the two most popular singers, certainly sales-wise, to come out of American Idol. And in country, no female singer is hotter on the charts than Underwood, except perhaps, Taylor Swift (but Underwood fans hate it when you bring her up).
With just three albums and a career that launched on Idol five years ago, Underwood has racked up a score of #1s and other hit singles, along with multi-platinum album sales that include her most recent release, last year's Play On. This has all sent her into the land of arena tours and also recently brought her to the landmark Hollywood Bowl (Oct. 2) for a concert that certainly had its moments, but showed she still has much growing to do on the concert stage as a performer.
There were two opening acts: The Sons of Sylvia are longtime friends of Underwood and came off a touch more organic than typical commercial country, sort of on the Americana side of things. Second-billed Billy Currington was another story. A somewhat predictable country hit-maker with some southern rock riffing along with pop bits and a central theme of....beer. "I like my night life and my bud lite," he sang, showing he has poor taste in brew, sorry. A few of his tunes were mildly catchy, but really, he's one of those journeyman types if he keeps that career going down the road.
Underwood's 90-minute-plus performance began with some off-center musical vamping from the band with what looked like, well, wormholes on the video screens - shades of Doctor Who! Then, the band kicked into "Cowboy Casanova," one of her spunkier tunes and she walked on on stage to grab the mic stand and it seemed, take charge. A good start. The more pop-rockish title song from her 2005 debut album Some Hearts, recalled - just a bit - the band that had just played the Bowl the night prior - Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Again, a winning tune.
But some other songs in-between them and following weren't as solid, despite hit status. She talked about appearing at the Bowl and watching performances on TV and did seem awed to being back by the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. The ensemble added extra touches - especially through strings such as cello, to several of her ballads, bringing a torchy feel as during "I Now You Won't" Yet at times, she really didn't take advantage of the special setting to deviate far from her usual tour setlist. Underwood may be entrenched in country stylings overall, but she has the potential to stretch out more and this was her opportunity, unfulfilled. Also, her voice too often fought, rather than flowed with the orchestral additions.
Before the pining "Temporary Home," she talked a bit about coming out to Hollywood for Idol. the winsome "All-American Girl" was certainly chipper, though cliche-loaded, but "Undo It," just came off clumsy.
Her biggest hit, "Jesus, Take the Wheel" combined with "How Great Thou Art," drew a standing ovation from a good part of the venue, but genuine spiritual depth was lost in a over-emoting. Far better was the surprise appearance of Randy Travis for their low-key, enrapturing duet "I Told You So," and also the Songs of Sylvia returning to the stage for their collaboration with her from Play On, "What Can I Say."
Between songs, she actually was at her most charming when her guitarist experienced an equipment malfunction, telling the crowd these things happen (and indeed they do through no fault of an artist) and then teasing the musician a bit: "Couldn't you just go chucka-chucka-chucka?" That was cute, really.
The sort of country-rocking "Last Name" was a good-time slice of bar regret matched by the gal-pal therapy "Before He Cheats."The final number, "Songs Like This," was marred - at least from our vantage point - dead center, behind the boxes - by hi-volume fireworks. The dazzling display would've been a capper had it comes a few minutes later.
The crowd skewed female to a high degree. In fact, on our shuttle bus there from the park and ride (my guest was a friend's 10-year-old daughter who cupped her ears during the fireworks finding them too loud to ooh and ahh at all), it looked like girls night out. And riding back on that bus, one didn't hear a lot of post-concert rah-rah, either; none of "how about when she did this or that?"
It certainly wasn't a poor show. Far from it. But Underwood was underwhelming. Nice? Sure. Pleasant? Yes. Of course, saying she wasn't less that total godhead is going to make her fan's blood boil, but that's the way it goes. It's easy to sings for the fans your already have. But winning over someone perhaps indifferent or better yet, making them a true believer? That's her challenge now. And it's about being more than an Country Music American Idol.

Concert Review: Muse at Staples Center in Los Angeles - Techno-Mages of Epic Art Rock

Muse makes music fit for science fiction, fantasy, and, yeah superheroes (saw that coming, didn’t ya?). But really, one can imagine the Silver Surfer spanning the spaceways or the Green Lantern Corps seeking justice and finding wonders in galaxies far, far away with Muse songs as the backdrop. But for all the cosmic trappings, at the heart of the group’s sound is passion matched by fiery craft. And that’s what drove the British band’s performance at Staples Center in Downtown Los Angeles this past Saturday night (Sept. 25).

The show was the first of two nights at the venue, following a concert a couple of days prior at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Muse could’ve easily played one huge stadium gig, but the arena shows – this one and the others, by all reports – were more satisfying than a single stadium spectacle, in fact, rave-worthy.
Muse frontman singer-guitarist-keyboardist Matt Bellamy may not be a loquacious out-there kind of guy in a Bono or Bruce mold, but he is a bandleader and a mesmerizing player. His plaintive vocals, which range from tenor intonations to melodramatic falsetto, rides atop musical constructs that tap into art rock, prog-rock, world, electronic and dance sounds, plus plenty of hard edge and even metal riff thunder. There’s guitar firepower, mood-casting, raging and supple rhythms and big ‘ol beats, too.

Bellamy, bassist/keyboardist Christopher Wolstenholme and drummer Dominic Howard played on two levels – the usual stage and also risers, surrounded by multiple video screens flashing their images and other often eye-catching visuals ranging from intricate graphics to scorched earth and tranquil nature views. This was complimented by banks of mind-twist lighting plus lasers as well.

While Muse’s current release Resistance isn’t as captivating as the superb Black Holes and Revelations - the album that really sent the band into the success stratosphere - it certainly has a number of strong tracks. Mixing those numbers with Muse’s past material made for a stellar set list overall and just a few lulls, and even that depended on the level of Muse fan as many were enraptured the entire night.

The show kicked off with the glam-rock stomp of “Uprising,” (with it’s loopy little Doctor Who-ish sub-theme) followed by the challenge of “Resistance” and racing “New Born.”

The sold-out arena roared for the space funk of “Supermassive Black Hole” (aka the soundtrack for vampire baseball in the first Twilight film) A flash of the “Star Spangled Banner,” gave way to bubble-and-blast churn of “Hysteria” and its demand of “I want it all.” The titanic trio sound was augmented in some cases by not tracks or programming, but by longtime tour keyboardist Morgan Nicholls (considered by some hardcore fans to be an unofficial fourth member).

Bellamy sat at the piano for the band’s version of “Feeling Good,” a Leslie Bricusse & Anthony Newley tune that dates back more than 45 years to musical productionThe Roar of the Greasepaint, the Small of the Crowd. Next up was the original tension-wrought ballad “Guiding Light.”

After a slithering “Undisclosed Desires,” the band launched into the pulsating bliss of “Starlight” (still their biggest of the biggies) and while parts of the crowds had sung along to other songs, this one brought the loudest participation, especially for the refrain. It was a start of a killer troika of tunes that also included the ripping “Plug In Baby,” and then, “Time is Running Out,” set off by Bellamy playing a bit of the classic “House of the Rising Sun,” and the audience joining in to sing the lyrics.

The push and pull “Unnatural Selection” – another Resistance number – closed out the main set. The encore began with “Exogenesis: Symphony, Part 1: Overture” (making one wonder if they’d play the entire three-part space opera, which is a bit of faltering bloat, really), then came the churning sonic assault of “Stockholm Syndrome” and a final epic in “Knights of Cydonia,” which still sounds (as I've said before) like the lost theme for a BBC sci-fi series or mystical sword-and-sorcery film. Or according the wife, like Iron Maiden. Fair enough.

Though Muse does often evoke fantasy imagery, many themes and lyrics are rooted in tightly wound emotions, working on multiple levels as the songs may detail individual struggles or communal battles against all manner of darkness. But ultimately, light emerges and that’s key to the Muse and the wonder it creates on record and especially, in concert.

Muse opened some dates for U2 last year during its 360°Tour and now, with Bono sidelined following back surgery, the group not scheduled to play again until next year, it looks like the front-runner as the world’s biggest band, certainly in all manner of rock. Sure, there’s Coldplay, while surely warm and inviting, that sense of power beyond the realm isn’t quite there, even if the songs are. Arcade Fire might be a contender, too, but isn’t at that level quite yet and remains an eclectic, albeit ever more popular delight. At this moment, the men of Muse stand out above all the rest, masterful techno-mages conjuring a mysterious magic all their own.

"They've given you a number and taken away your name...."

The year was 1965. CBS-TV in the USA launched a new series, Secret Agent, that had already been running successfully in the U.K. as Danger Man. Patrick McGoohan starred as John Drake, a spy more about wits than guns and slick moves (though he had both when truly needed). Around the same time, McGoohan had captivated viewers of Disney's Wonderful World of Color with his portrayal as the Scarecrow of Romney Marsh. Following Secret Agent, he went on to create the still-acclaimed series The Prisoner.

Danger Man launched a year prior to another excellent British spy series that would also hit American shores, The Avengers, and a couple of years before the big screen arrival of Sean Connery as 007. The initial UK episodes were a half-hour, with John Drake a N.A.T.O. agent, said to be American (McGoohan’s attemped an accent of sort and times, but it somewhat disappears eventually).

The show was actually almost canceled in Britain after three years, but the Bond craze gave it new life, This led to a longer 50-minute episodes, an hour with commercials statesidem plus something of a makeover as Drake became a British Special Security Agent for MI9 and the American accent issues vanished.

In both short and long form versions, the tales are taut and well-woven. The half-hour stories are compact, though generally lack the more expansive mystery and thriller elements of the longer shows. McGoohan's acting is straight-ahead as Drake takes on undercover roles of various kinds. There are no Bond puns and such, but there is wit and it's quite sharp. He's cocky, yes, but no womanizing, either, one should note.

Among the particularly notable episodes are "View From the Villa," one of the half-hour stories shot in Portmeirion, Wales, where McGoohan would stage The Prisoner a few years later and "Colony 3,“ from the hour-long era, a story of a spy retirment locale that would inspire the trappings of the The Prisoner.

All 86 episodes of Danger Man/Secret Agent are collected in this new edition complete series set from A&E. They're presented in the original black-and-white television broadcast order, from the original programs that aired only in the U.K. as Danger Man to the 47 episodes of Secret Agent that were seen internationally, including the two-part series finale "Koroshi" and "Shinda Shima" filmed in color.

Bonus features include: A Patrick McGoohan Biography/Filmography; Complete Full-Length Original U.S. Opening featuring the “Secret Agent Man” theme song performed by Johnny Rivers; and Photo galleries.

This was and still is one of the greatest spy series in television history a precursor to shows such as Alias, 24 and others, even the current TV series Nikita. The overall black-and-white look gives things a noir feel as well and while some period things and sitatutions may be dated, Secret Agent/Danger Man is an enthralling collection and for those unfamilar with the series, waiting to be discovered. Of course, it’ll likely lead you to the Complete Prisoner. And that’s a good thing. A very good thing, indeed. Be seeing you.
