Do-It-Herself Workshop: Succulents!

Last Thursday, Home Depot’s across the country taught women (and some men too) how to make your own succulent garden inspired by Pinterest at the Do-It-Herself Workshop. I helped co-lead at our local HD and had a super fun time! We had a great turn-out and got lots of gals (and little gals) excited about succulents inspired by Pinterest!

The Best part of the evening for me….Ethan and I were presented with our own HD aprons! How cool!

Pinterest & Twitter Succulent Garden Contest

The first boxed wine holder Ethan made was using pallet wood and I stained and stenciled it afterwards. Ethan was kind enough to make a second boxed wine holder so I could have a set….just kidding! Ethan made a second boxed wine holder to GIVE AWAY!!! That means this summer, you can be sipping on some boxed wine housed by a custom-built boxed wine holder made with love by Jocie and Ethan (that’s us, lol).

Both boxed wine holders were made to fit Bota Box wine. Sorry if you’re not a Bota Box fan, but I sure am! Redvolution is my current favorite, but I really like most of them and they are reasonably priced around $16 per box. Bota Box is not paying us to say this, we just like them!

Our first boxed wine holder was made using harvested the pallet wood that was heat-treated (not chemically treated), clean and in good condition. Obviously, I avoided using pallets that may have come in contact with chemicals or other nastiness, because who wants that in their wine?! This holder I stained and then stenciled to make it a bit fancier (if you can call a boxed wine holder fancy).

Both holders also have a hole in the back panel that lines up with the hole in the box, so that you can still carry your holder from place to place. The exterior hole also helps to slide the panel up and down to replace the boxed wine.

The second boxed wine holder was made using pallet wood and a little scrap Ethan had around the shop. Then I painted it white and hand-painted the saying “It’s wine o’clock.” I also painted the insides of the holes aqua to give it a little peek-a-boo color.

I love when I take pictures in the middle of the day that involve wine. Yes, please!

I finished it off with some clear wax to protect it from wine drips, you know, in case things get crazy!

And one last look of the boxed wine holder that can be yours!

I’ve been toying with the idea of a herb garden for a while. Ethan built a planter and herb garden for my mom last year and I have been itching for my own ever since. But, we’ve been so busy with other projects, I didn’t have the time to build another one.

Fortunately, I was shopping at Walmart (buying crap I don’t need) and found this set of three pots in a metal tray for $10! Super cute and a great price! I found them in the craft isle, surprisingly.

I also picked up some herbs for around $3 each. I thought I was buying basil, mint, and rosemary but realized when I was plating them that I bought cilantro instead of basil. oops. lol!

Once home, I busted out my handy-dandy Silhouette, and whipped out some labels on orange vinyl.

Once I peeled off the excess vinyl, I placed packing tape over the letters. Who needs expensive transfer paper when you have packing tape!?

I then removed the packing tape from the backing and the vinyl comes off easily. I centered the words on the tins, pressed firmly, then removed the tape!

Finally, I took it all outside and planted the herbs! woo hoo!

And finally, done! I’m hoping herbs aren’t that much work – I oscillate between never water my plants and watering them too much. Hopefully I don’t treat Ethan that way. lol.

So, how knows lots about gardening (because I am seriously just winging it)? Where is the best place for my herbs? I will like to keep them inside but all my windows ha UV protectant on them and I forget to take care of them if I put them outside. HELP!

Glass Painting Basics

I love glass painting because it is so easy to add permanent color and design to basic, inexpensive pieces of glass! Pieces can be washed and used for decor or dining.

There are several different brands of glass paint available but Martha Stewart and DecoArt are the ones I’m familiar with. Martha Stewart’s glass paint can be cooked in the oven to become permanent. Martha also sells an “everywhere” paint that can be used on wood, fabric, metal, and glass, plus its cheaper than the paint just for glass. This “everywhere” paint has to cure for 3 weeks before it can be washed or sustain too much use.

There are also lots of different ways to paint on glass – freehand, stencil, silkscreen, paint pens, or however you want! The best way to apply the paint with stencils is to use a pouncer (less paint gets under the stencil than when a paintbrush is used).

Silkscreens also work well with pouncers and are cheaper than using the $14.99 scraper. I used a silkscreen for my coasters and vase, and I loved that the pouncer allowed me to create a varying density of paint.

Dollar Store “Tea Time” Mug

I love the Dollar Store basic white mugs and plates!!! I free-handed this tea bag and “tea time” with a small paint brush in one hand and a glass of wine in the other! lol. It turned out to be my favorite piece and it can BE YOURS! Find out how to bring this fabulous mug home at the end of this post.

Ceramic Coasters

Next up, I painted these unfinished ceramic coaster that I bought at Michael’s for $3.99. I painted the base coat a light gray (because that’s what I had on hand) and then used the silk screen to layer different colors.

Dollar Store Vase

Last but not least, I bought this basic Dollar Store vase and added a pop of color with the glass paint and the silk screen. This took less than 5 minutes and the silk screen gives the paint a nice, even texture!

Paper Bouquet Craft

Not sure if I have shared this before, but the first Tuesday of the month, I go with a group on moms and toddlers to our local senior center to do a craft and sing some songs. It is a sweet sweet time for all of us – the seniors love the laughter and excitement the kids bring, and the kids learn to care for, value, and relate to an older and wiser generation. Growing up, my mother and grandmother often took us to visit shut-ins and people in the nursing home. It taught me so much and gave me many wonderful memories! I home my girls take away the same.

I planned this month’s craft to celebrate upcoming Mother’s Day and May Flowers! Thanks to Artrageous Afternoon for the idea.

Izzie loved making this bouquet of flowers, plus, these flowers will last a lot longer than the real deal. haha

Supplies Needed:

• 6 green strips of green construction paper
• 3″ squares of tissue paper
• 2 other pieces of paper
• glue
• scissors

First, I cut lots of lots of strips of green construction paper about 3/4′ wide. I was super exact about it. I then cut A TON of 3″ squares of a variety of different color tissue paper.

Then, Izzie glued 6 strips of green paper on to the paper. Izzie then put dots of glue at the top of each strip of paper.

She then placed tissue paper squares, both flat and crumpled at the top. This was all her genius – she had a very definite idea of how she wanted to do things! (I don’t know where she gets that from, lol)

I then traced Izzie’s hand and forearm, cut it out, and glued it on top to look like the hand was holding the flowers.

Finally, I hung it on our Washi Tape clothes line art display.

I guess I’ve gone a bit crazy with succulent garden ideas since Home Depot asked me to participate in their Pinterest Inspired Succulent Garden DIH workshop! On Tuesday, you may have seen my fabulous succulent terrarium I made using poplar wood and a mason jar. I had some succulents left over and just couldn’t stop myself, so I made three more easy succulent gardens that each only took 5 minutes or less to make! Let me know which is your favorite.

Birdcage Succulent Garden

I had this idea in the back of my mind for a while now and was SUPER excited to make a succulent garden inside a birdcage! It is so cute and really my kinda garden.

I found this fab birdcage at Michael’s for $10 (it was 50%) and I love it! They had bunches of other birdcages, but this was the biggest white cage they had. I would have preferred it to be larger, but I didn’t wan to spend the money or put in the time to paint a larger one.

Once home from Michael’s, I grabbed some white card stock and cut it to the size of the bottom of the birdcage. The bottom was all wire, so I was worried that rocks would fall through.

Then, I put rocks around the edges of the bottom of the birdcage and placed a plastic planter liner in the bottom. I used a rounded liner but a flat liner would have been better.

I then added a little bit of loose soil. Succulents need very little water, so the soil needs to be loose so that the water can drain. This is why I love succulent gardens – so hardy and low maintenance!

Finally, I added the succulents, plus two cacti and small aloe plant to give a little variation and color. I kept the cacti in their containers because they were so heavy and kept tipping over.

And now she sits on my window seat as my very first indoor plants that have lived past two weeks! woo hoo!

Chalkboard Succulent Planter

Who doesn’t love a good chalkboard project? I sure love ‘em!

When buying way too many succulents, I purchased a planter filled with them because it was cheaper than buying them individually. I didn’t love the planter and didn’t need it, but bought it anyway. So I had the ceramic bowl planter left over, plus a few succulents, but the bright pink bowl didn’t really match the decor of my dining room.

I grabbed some leftover chalkboard spray paint and blue painter’s tape and got to work taping off the top ring of the bowl. Then, I took it outside and did some spraying. This impulsive girl was fortunate enough to have a mild, sunny day. yay!

I added a little chalk art, put the plants back in, and DONE! Easiest plant ever!

Burlap and Rope Planter

Again, I had a left over red ceramic planter and an extra aloe plant, but the red just wasn’t my style. So I rummaged through my craft stash (aka hoard) and pulled out some burlap ribbon and rope.

Not too much to tell – I just wrapped the burlap and rope around the planter and used hot glue to hold it in place. This didn’t even take 5 minutes!

And now all together!

Okay, one more of the birdcage because I love it so much.

I know, you are shocked to see me blogging about a succulent garden wall hanging…really a mason jar terrarium. I’m pretty shocked myself. Kim is our resident gardener and I prefer my plants to be of the plastic variety. Its pretty hard to kill a plastic plant, although if anyone could do it, it would be me and my girls!

I gave gardening a try a few weeks ago when I was asked  to partner with Home Depot on their Do-It-Herself Workshop: Succulent Gardens Inspired by Pinterest. In addition to sharing this succulent garden on their blog, I will also be co-leading a workshop May 16th – have you registered yet?

Mason Jar Terrarium

Constructing the terrarium (or garden, as us not-s0-fancy non-gardeners like to say) was the easy part! I gathered my supplies and got to work at my dining room table. I used some paper Ethan had left over from laying hardwood floors in order to protect the table. It’s not such a pretty color, but it does the job.

Supplies Needed:

• Twine
• Succulents
• Mason jar
• Potting soil
• Spanish moss
• Rocks

I first grabbed a large Ball Jar / mason canning jar I had on hand and wrapped the top with twine so that eventually I had two long strands hanging off opposing sides.

Then I tied the two sides above in a knot, then bow.

Then I started to layer my garden! woot woot.

First, I placed A LOT of spanish moss at the bottom. Not sure it was needed, but it certainly looked pretty!

Second, I added some rocks. Really any rocks would do, so I used some I found in our back yard! lol.

Third, I added a loose layer of soil. The soil needs to be loose in order for water to drain through it, since succulents require little water.

Finally, I added the succulents and mini-cactus. This was a whole lot harder than it looked and I stuck myself with the cactus quite a few times. No pain, no gain, I guess!

Rustic Wooden Hanger

Once I finished with the mason jar, I started on the wooden hanger. It was super simple and a project that I could handle without the assistance of the hubby. lol.

Supplies Needed:

• 1x10x18″ piece of poplar
• Decorative knob
• Wood stain

Did you now Home Depot will cut your wood for you? How cool is that? I picked out a piece of 1×10″ poplar and asked a guy in an orange apron to cut it down for me to 18″. It was super cheap – I think I only spent $2 or 3 on the wood.

Once home, I sanded the edges to remove any fraying and then I drilled a centered hole about 3 inches from the top for the knob. Then I stained it with Rust-Oleum’s Dark Walnut and finished it with Matte Polyurthane.

Once completely dry, I finally screwed on the knob!

Mason Jar Succulent Terrarium

I couldn’t figure out exactly where to hang it and Kim had asked me to throw some succulents her way, so I headed over to her house to hang it (and take loads of pix).
