The Detroit legend's production prowess has been in full display courtesy of his latest EP 'Circus Act' released on his own Blackflag Recordings imprint and accompanied by a slick Nic Fanciulli remix.

With a central involvement in Detroit's revered Movement Festival and a massive Ibiza season that sees him play four dates at Marco Carola's MusicOn night at Amnesia and appearances at Vagabundos at Pacha and Ushuaia, 2012 is shaping up to be another big year for the irrepressible Stacey Pullen.

The essential house classic Colour Of Skin feat Arnold Jarvis gets a fresh update via Alistair Albrecht.

Over the years, Swing 52 founder Benji Candelario has dominated the club scene, developing an impeccable reputation as an internationally celebrated DJ and visionary producer/remixer for some of biggest artists in the industry. Candelario's resume has released smash after smash like “Heading in the Right Direction,” BC “Switch It,” and Arnold Jarvis “You've Let Love Slip Away,” with the latter two reaching #2 on Billboard's Breakout Chart, reaffirming Candelario's lasting presence as a true dance music connoisseur.

However it was Swing 52's Colour Of Skin co-produced and co-written in the 1994, with Wayne Rollins and Oscar P, that established Swing 52 as a force in dance music history. The track was released by Cutting Records in the US, then later licensed to Polygram/FFRR in the UK, and went on to become a top 10 smash selling over 300,000 copies via singles, and compilations worldwide. The classic house anthem now gets the tech-house-electro retouch from producer Alistair Albrecht.

Alistair Albrecht started producing in 2008. His first release ‘What Would We Do’ with DJ partner Patrick Hagenaar went straight to No.1 across all major DJ download sites. The track was supported by the likes of Eric Morillo and Pete Tong. Since then Alistair has gone on to top the house, tech house and techno charts, had three tracks simultaneously in the top 10 house charts, remixed for some of the biggest artists and labels in the world and DJ’d around the globe.

Alistair has always been at the forefront of dance music, before producing he was involved in organizing the first ever Desert Parties in the Middle East, earned his UK DJ stripes at the legendary Turnmills, was the main resident and promotions manager at Pacha London for three years, held residencies at every major London venue, hosted one of the most successful club nights in the UK capital and DJ’d across the globe.

With his continuous worldwide DJ schedule, weekly radio show syndicated out to over 20 stations worldwide, multiple remixes, Alistair’s release schedule for 2012 looks even stronger with several solo and H&A releases set for the year.

MR V gives us the low down on this years Detroit Movement Festival.

So Sunday May 27th I was in Detroit to play that evening for NextAid's official movement afterparty at MotorCity Wine which by the way was awesome, i'll explain that night later in this recap.

I arrive with Oscar P, Jessica Bendig & friends to get my V.I.P badge around 4:00pm and the minute I enter Carl Craig is ROCKING THE SPOT. Never heard Carl Dj before and I was always a fan of his productions so to walk in while he's rockin it was awesome, I was expecting him to play borderline Techy/Driving Techno sounds but NO! the dude was playing some dope ass HOUSE Tracks, straight soulful, techy funky shit hard...*see video below*

Right after Carl...comes in Dj Sneak, who as of late started his own personal WAR with Swedish House Mafia that's gaining some enormous fame and criticism on both ends, I haven't heard Sneak play in awhile so I was really hoping for him to KILL IT, and from the very 1st jam he played....HE DELIVERED!!! talk about sending subliminal messages thru music? I listened to Sneak who had a 1hour & a half slot for about 30 mins. then off I went to check out Maya Jane Coles....

I head to the Beatport stage and there she was, not like if we never met because we did briefly about 2 years ago but there she was, in the mix, and the crowd was all into it, the area was VERY packed in and loving the sounds, she was playing something that sounded like she produced it and it was DOPE!! although I liked it and it was funky I had to head back to check out Dj Sneak & sure enough the dude was Wrecking it!

20 mins. later I see Piranahead who tells me he's Djing in 20 mins @ the "Made In Detroit" stage, so I meet with Diviniti Divine and my peoples and watch Piranahead drop some soulful house gems on the crowd, 45 mins later I leave, see Loco Dice arrive on the scene also with my dude Filsonik, we chill Main Stage/Backstage and I notice Josh Wink setting up, yet another Dj who I heard was awesome but NEVER HEARD BEFORE so I had to sick around...well at least I tried to until I bumped into Shauna from the Objektivity [Dennis Ferrer, Filsonik, TMB, etc. etc] and she told us that Jaime Jones was Djing @ the Red Bull stage.....

Off we go as I have been hearing alot about this guy, so I head there with an open mind and when I get there, it's FULLY PACKED so I have a Guest Access badge which entitles me to get backstage but that was full, I tried getting into what he was playing and it was funky and dope but honestly it reminded of what I heard Maya Jane Coles doing, the tracks she was rockin?... so I wasn't really impressed but granted I only gave him about 30 mins of my time because security was clearing out backstage cause it was just to crazy?, so back to the main stage I go to check out Josh Wink and the DUDE WAS SMASHING THE STAGE WITH CLASSIC HOUSE RECORDS!!!!

In retrospect people really NEED TO ATTEND THE MOVEMENT FETIVAL aka DEMF regardless if Deep House is not represented to the tee. I would love to see more Deep House/Soulful represented from all area's but regardless if you love HOUSE MUSIC it is a reason to go because you DO learn something new......

V.

Please note the video here shows the early time, this starts @ noon and ends around midnight and get's busier by the hour!!!

https://vimeo.com/43081998

Sole Channel

Traxsource

deep house

Soulful House

Mr V

Alix Alvarez

movement festival

THE ALBUM: Times change. We get old like a fine wine still aging, but we are not quite ready to close up shop. We take a long hard look and where we started, and how we got here. Long gone are the days of the cassette tape, the 2 inch tape, and the 8 track. While the graduates switch from CDs to laptops, one thing remains the same. The pulse of the city, the people and the music. This is the path I've traveled and my roots revisited. A new collection of collaborations, remixes, and some unreleased material with featured artists Gypsymen, Foremost Poets, Davidson Ospina, Christian Scott, DJ Ax, Charles Dockins, Rainy Payne, DC's Born I Music, Moba Sound and more.

Throughout his career, Arnold has been nothing but consistent.

Consistent when it comes to releasing quality music. His is a brilliant career that began at the prime of his youth. While only a teenager his voice & talent landed him front and centre of a local Baltimore Gospel Choir for whom he was a prodigious soloist. In 1984, modest academic pursuits led him to NYC, however his talent and love of music did not lie dormant for long. He was drawn to music industry circles and was quickly embraced by them. He began to write, perform & record, and among the more noticeable gems from his early period in his career are collaborations with Frankie Knuckles on And I Loved You (a song written by Robert Owens & Satoshi Tomiie), Color of My Skin with Swing 52, Inspiration produced Kerri Chandler and his debut single Take Some Time Out produced by Tommy Musto & Yvonne Turner which enjoyed huge success.

The 21st century has seen increased impetus & creative output from Arnold, with a plethora of releases from in conjunction with artists such as MAW, Jazz n Groove, Eric Kupper, The Basement Boys, Louie Vega & Benji Candelario to name a few.

Aimed squarely at the dance floor, Arnold’s third full-length album Just Say It is a collection of new material that should grace every DJs collection, with NYC’s Shelter Maestro Timmy Regisford on production.

Who is Kenny Summit?

Kenny Summit continues to make his presence known on the producer front. nonstop underground energy...very hot!” says DJ Times Magazine.

Time moves much faster in the dance music industry than it does in the real world. Trends emerge and disappear…styles flip on a dime. The shelf life of any one dance artist or DJ isn’t very long and it’s only those who adapt – and lead the crowd – who carry on for an extended period. Take for example, New York’s Kenny Summit, a DJ who’s been hot on the scene for upwards of twenty years. For some perspective, Kenny was DJing in New York City clubs during the birth of rave, the mid-90’s dance music explosion, the electroclash movement and the present - arguably dance music’s most impactful moment on a pop culture scale. Bottom line, he’s seen the club world change and has grown with it; having playing some of the finest venues including the legendary Limelight (in its heyday), Crobar, Pink Elephant, Cielo and Lavo, among others.

Bruce Tantum, Time Out NY

Really nice work from Kenny! Nice array of house rhythms, from deep and groovy to tough and jackin'. Hotness!” – Bruce Tantum, Time Out NY

All these years of experience and amazing sounds has lead Kenny to produce his long awaited debut original artist album, “Not Just Talk” (released on Montreal based Mile End Records). This impressive effort hardly sounds like the work of a novice producer – and for good reason – Kenny recruited some of his most talented friends to mentor him in the art of studio production. The all-star list of mentors includes producer/engineer Scott Wozniak, Jay-J Hernandez (Grammy Nominee “Best Remixed Recording” category for his remix of Jill Scott’s “He Loves Me”) and Eric Kupper (2x Grammy Winner and House Music Pioneer).

"Scott Wozniak is my biggest teacher and he's the one that really cut my teeth and has given me the most direction. Jay-J Hernandez has given me a greater understanding of sound and sound design. There really isn't a better engineer in house music than Jay-J, I mean, the guy taught Miguel Migs how to make music, so it’s an honor to have him as a mentor. Eric Kupper is always there when I have any questions, needs, concerns, he is sort of my Dali Lama of everything house and has become a real factor in my maturing as a producer," Kenny says

Kenny’s debut album, Not Just Talk, is a 10-track testament to all that is house and delves into techno, jackin’ house, electro-soul and classic house. “What We Must Become” is a gentle soundtrack for the future and the promise of better days ahead where smooth soundscapes float along with hazy beats. “Nickel Plated” is a drive down motown techno’s memory lane with a contemporary twist on the legendary sound while “Mayhem” cuts right into the soul of house music with disco bass rhythms and classic organs. On “Love Spreader” Kenny steers his ship into the space disco territory with a blast of intergalactic filtered bass, before taking off for a full wave of sythy-techno on “Garvitos Way.” The peak time hits with the trio of banging stormer’s “The Future,” ”The Cut” and “VIP” before Kenny signs off with the Daft Punk/acid inspired “I Am.”

In addition to producing his new album and additional tracks/remixes, Kenny recently launched his own label, Good For You Records. Kenny aims to use the label as a vehicle to release house, techno, funk, soul and Hip-Hop with a concentration on quality productions, live musicianship and polished vocals. Projects are already in the works with house legend Darryl D'Bonneau, Hip-Hop legend Redman, Grand Puba and the Artifacts, among others.

Phil T, Big Shot/DJ Times All the tracks will rock the dancefloors”

Not Just Talk” is the product of a three year relationship between Kenny Summit and Mile End Records. This partnership lead to a series of releases, including the critically acclaimed single "Keyed Up."

Ice T will serve as special guest emcee for the festival’s Main Stage Sunday, May 27; introducing the performances by Loco Dice (a hip-hop DJ/producer earlier in his career) and headliner Public Enemy. Ice T and Coco will also mix and mingle with guests inside the festival’s almost sold-out VIP area.

“Movement is riding a very strong wave of momentum right now and having Ice T and Coco here in Detroit for the festival will only add to it,” said Jason Huvaere, executive director of the Memorial Day Weekend festival.

Tickets for the VIP area behind the Main Stage are almost sold out and three-day weekend general admission passes are selling at a record pace. In 2011, Hart Plaza reached capacity on the Saturday with a sell-out crowd and Huvaere says he anticipates the festival will surpass the 100,000 attendee mark for the weekend.

“With the authentic underground styles we have represented across five stages, our posh VIP area, and having so many music and entertainment icons apart of this festival provides those who attend a unique Detroit experience that is unlike any other event in the country,” said Huvaere.

Ice T today is a star on the hit show Law and Order SVU and co-stars with his wife Coco on the widely popular reality series Ice Loves Coco on E! He recently made his directorial debut with the documentary Something from Nothing: the Art of Rap, which features more than 50 emcees including Kool Keith, Eminem, Kanye West, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, and Melle Mell. The documentary was a major success at the Sundance Film Festival premiere and is set for theatre release in June 2012.

A limited number of three-day VIP passes are still available for $200 per person. Three-day general admission weekend passes are currently on sale for $80 per person and will increase to $90 on Friday, May 11. Pre-sale one-day passes are now available for $45 per day.

Tania Fuentez Grills Oscar P about Life and House Music

Oscar P is a man on the move and on a mission. With a new album and upcoming international tour, he enters the second phase of a solid music career enjoying and appreciating opportunities to create good music, collaborating with people and putting his stamp on the NYC-branded events, “I’ll House You” and “Heavy” when he isn’t playing outside the city. This year, he enjoyed a successful run in Miami at the Winter Music Conference where crowds welcomed the vibe he shared via his unique style of music and parties. “House music is inspirational in the way that people come together,” Oscar P tells Tania Fuentez Media in the following interview. “There’s actually no other form of music with so many sub-genres that has the same global impact per demographic, the way HOUSE does.”

NOTE: The following questions were asked prior to the event.

TFM: Let’s talk Winter Music Conference. How often have you attended and how has it changed?

Since the start of it all. Since the 90s at the Fountainebleau Hotel, with only 200 industry attendees poolside exchanging promos, ideas, collaborations, etc. Long before the days of 500 parties, digital downloads, separated audiences and Ultra Fest. The WMC we have today is NOT that. Today, WMC is a money-making machine that crosses over to non-industry music lovers, and creates revenue for hotel owners, the airline industry, venue owners, spring breakers, promoters, DJs and the city of Miami. If people knew the amount of money that’s generated, it would boggle your mind. Every year we get price hiked, hotel rates go up, we smile and we keep going back for more. It actually surprises me that more people have not said NO to WMC. That’s a testament to the experience and connection people have with the city, and the hard work of individuals from different cities who produce and pay for these events. It’s not an easy thing to go to Miami, to drop $5,000 to $10,000 on a venue rental with a $10,000 to $20,000 bar guarantee just to break even. This is what happens most of the time in Miami. Now multiply this by the 300 plus parties you see … large and small, and well, you get the idea.

TFM: Any advice for newbies unfamiliar with all the ins-and-outs of the conference?

If you are looking at doing events … THINK SMALLER. THINK INSIDE THE BOX … there are many small venues, hotel lobbies and people who want your business. Unless you are experienced in the event business in Miami, which is very unique to the rest of the world, thread carefully. WMC is a great place to network and meet people, but today we have so many places where you can do that. So many festivals, events all around the world. Don’t get caught up in one place, or one event. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

TFM: Any surprises in store or new projects that you’re excited to drop at WMC?

The Big surprise for me was my new track with C. Scott (“The Message”) doing damage in Miami. After being #1 for two weeks on Traxsource, and five weeks in the Top 10, we got massive support from David Morales, Louie Vega, Tony Humphries and Frankie Knuckles who played it all over Miami. It was also supported on Top 10 charts by Aki Bergen, Todd Terry, Miguel Migs, DJ Spen, Maurice Joshua, Hector Romero, Marques Wyatt, Norty Cotto, Davidson Ospina, Lucas Keizer and many more. The fact that many of the House legends I grew up on embraced the release was very satisfying to me, as with releases these days, you never know what to expect. Some of the best records you may hear sometimes just don’t impact. We see this happen everyday.

TFM: Any details on the upcoming album?

I actually had to move the date twice, and have yet to schedule a new one. But it’s been finished since January. The title, “BACK 2 MY ROOTS,” represents revisiting the classic New York vibe I grew up on, with some of the flavor you see today. We kept things deep, soulful, and fun. May 29th is te new date.

TFM: Any tour plans?

Yes, as a matter of fact, I’m in talks right now to do September to November. We will start in Europe, Ibiza, U.K., Italy, Germany, then Mexico for Mi Casa Es Su Casa (Getting Married Oct. 3rd), then South Africa in November. We will have some announcements soon on our site, www.mediaservicesnyc.com

TFM: In closing … why is House important to you, what do you hope to contribute to this unique dance culture? What keeps you grounded in the biz?

I’m in the second phase of my music career, and right now I’m enjoying and appreciating creating music, collaborating with people and doing events when I’m not playing out of the city. House music is inspirational in the way that people come together. There’s actually no other form of music with so many sub-genres that has the same global impact per demographic, the way HOUSE does. I have a great team around me. I work very, very hard. I help a lot of people everyday. My contribution has always been to open doors for new people and give some of the opportunities I never had. Then, they have to keep that door open and build for themselves. Also, keep in mind we are making House music, not curing cancer or AIDS. We have to keep that in perspective at all times and not get ahead of ourselves as individuals. I let my work speak for itself, and I hope that other people watch what I do, and how I work, and pick up on that. That’s all I can ask for.

Christian Martin's love affair with electronic music began in 1995, as an early attendee at Southern California's legendary Moontribe full moon desert parties. After absorbing late 90's club life in New York, London, and Los Angeles, Christian settled in San Francisco in the spring of 2000. He started playing records in 2002 under the tutelage of his brother, Justin Martin, armed with a stack of Justin's old vinyl and used Technics 1200's from Sammy D. In 2003, inspired by the massive desert soundsystems of old, Christian founded the dirtybird soundsystem. Along with co-founders Justin Martin, Worthy, and Claude VonStroke, dirtybird's Sunday afternoon BBQ's have quickly become a Golden Gate Park institution.

Dance Parade Hits NYC

Thousands are expected to take part in the sixth annual Dance Parade on Saturday May 19th, filling New York City’s streets with music, colorful floats, troupes and dance companies.

Dance Parade, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting dance as an expressive and unifying art form. Director Greg Miller notes that “budgets for the arts are being slashed from our schools and non-profits, making it hard for businesses and consumers to fund the arts. All that’s left is to watch dance on TV without participating!”

Miller continued: “What we’re trying to do is to light up the city with 10,000 dancers moving to 80 styles of dance from all sorts of ethnic and dance cultures. Our theme this year _ “United We Dance Parade” _ is all about artists and folks who have seldom danced to come together to celebrate diversity and contribute to our culture, energy and artistry so that we light up the city and have fun doing it. It’s not dissimilar to how people go a bit nuts dressing up for Halloween — We give folks the chance to move and celebrate in any form they want. And it rubs off.”

DJ Ali Coleman, who will be on the House Coalition float, spinning alongside DJs Kervyn Mark, Wil Milton and Jihad Muhammad, shared why he supports the event every year. “This is the parade that really touches on the “Melting-Pot” ideal of NYC … it’s not the African Day Parade, Puerto Rican Day Parade … it doesn’t celebrate just Irish people’s heritage, nor is it just a celebration of Indian Independence,” Coleman explains. “Dance Parade and Dance Festival celebrates all of that, because it’s in celebration of the one of the two things that we’re all connected to _ dance … music just goes along with it. It’s the parade that truly celebrates all of the people of NYC.”

HISTORY BEHIND CABARET LAW

The parade also embodies the spirit of non-violent protest, specifically against the Cabaret Law, which originated in 1926 and was largely forgotten until the early 1990s when it was resurrected by former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s administration to address drug problems in nightclubs. The law, which states that a license is required where more than four individuals are dancing and food and alcohol is sold, inadvertently caused many legitimate dance oriented establishments to be fined and closed.

Acknowledging dance as a communicative, social form of expression, Dance Parade organizers shed some historical light on the subject in a detailed section on the event Web site. It states: “In the 19th century, ballroom dancing was deemed devil’s work. In the 1920s, New York City enacted the Cabaret Law to stem interracial dancing from Harlem Jazz Clubs. The 1930s had Nazi Germany quashing Swing Dancing because it was considered anarchistic. And in 2006, a New York State Supreme Court ruled that, unlike music, theater and painting, dance is not a constitutionally protected form of expression.”

Mahazi Roundtree, a longtime Dance Parade participant, recently noted that “there are still musicians today that have a police record because of some violation to the Cabaret Law. If you remember, Billie Holiday was stripped of her Cabaret card due to her addiction and had to fight to perform at Carnegie Hall, this law is still on the books and many bars, lounges, pubs to this day cannot allow dancing, even though they have juke boxes, or live performances. Freedom2dance/House Coalition have been active raising awareness to this issue. Even though (Mayor) Bloomberg is in full support of the Dance Parade because of the tourist dollars it brings in, he still has not addressed the Cabaret Law (and probably won’t).”

The Dance Parade ends at Tompkins Square Park, where workshops, stage performances, a social dance and more activities are planned. But, the overall event goes beyond a day in the park, Miller said. “It inspires folks to take dance lessons, be proud about their roots and to feel connected to the broad movement (pun intended!) of what makes us alive.”

And, he mentioned: “This year, we’re taking all that a step further and directing much of our income from grants and donations into our schools and community centers. In partnership with the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, we are sending teaching artists from the parade into recreation centers with our “Community Kinect” program for a five-week residency program that’s focused on fitness and movement. The kids will then complete their program by dancing with their teachers in the parade and also be able to get up on stage at the post parade festival at DanceFest.”

NOTE: The 2012 New York Dance Parade starts at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 19. DanceFest, which is free to the public, is from 3-7 p.m. at Tompkins Square Park.

East Village spot reopened its doors for one last hurrah to celebrate DJ Bumpy Nuggets birthday. Tania Fuentez reports

I’ll keep this simple. New York City’s nightlife is losing its edge, barely hanging on by a thread thanks to those underground loyalists who refuse to follow the pack. Everything good eventually comes to an end, and you’re lucky if you’re there when it happens. Last night was one of those nights in the East Village at a tucked-away bar/lounge on Avenue B which reopened its doors for one last hurrah _ celebrating DJ Bumpy Nuggets birthday. The spot, White Noise, had recently closed for reasons unknown to me like so many other small clubs and businesses trying to survive around the city. What I know, however, was the party last night underscores the value of friendship and staying true to a funky, intimate, renegade vibe. I miss that more and more when going out in New York _ a different time, a different attitude. Forget all the bottle service BS and wannabe posers. I’m talking about respecting the spirit of House music and underground dance culture _ appreciating the raw energy of the moment. DJs Aaron Dae, Oscar P. and several others took turns mixing and keeping the music flowing for friends celebrating with Bumpy Nuggets and others in the area checking out things at the dimly-lit, red-tinged bar. Not sure what’ll replace White Noise, but I hate to see another good place go … again (i.e., Sin Sin, Mars Bar, etc.)

According to Born, he wanted "to show love and bring attention to the companies who have shown me love in my career so far. These are great brands that believe in me and I honestly believe in them, so I wanted the world to know." The video also features clips from the neighborhood on Montgomery County's infamous Bel Pre Road where Born spent his childhood and early teenage years. "I wanted to show people where I came from and where I am now and where I'm going." - Born
