They should recall that the Tathagata, in making use of them in explaining the Dharma always uses them in the semblance of a raft that is of use only to cross a river. As the raft is of no further use after the river is crossed, it should be discarded. So these arbitrary conceptions of things and about things should be wholly given up as one attains enlightenment. -Buddha&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All things are impermanent. What we have &quot;always done&quot; has not always been done nor will it always be done. It is simply the raft we have used for awhile to get from there to here. A blind need for permanence that fails to recognize that things are always changing all around us and in us at all times and in all places. Things that have served us well in the past become obstacles to moving forward. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;As the raft is of no further use after the river is crossed, it should be discarded.&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As the European enlightenment-renaissance-scientific-industrial revolution went on the old ways of feudalism and mercantilism were abandoned to be replaced by nation-states, nationalism and capitalism. As Europeans crossed the ocean to settle the Americas they eventually discovered that the old ties that bound them to their former Kings and Lords no longer served a positive and useful purpose. Consequently, we broke those ties and moved on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What drives us as individuals and communities to this clinging? We do it in our personal lives as well. We take photographs in order to hold on to precious moments in our lives. We attach to family, friends and relationships and all the while as we attempt to perfect them to our preconceived notions of how they should perfectly be we also resist the idea of change and potential... eventual... inevitable... loss occuring in them. We cling to our notions and idealized perceptions of the reality we create for ourselves.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Certainly fear and ignorance drive this. We fear loss. We fear not getting what we want. We tend to be ignorant of the inevitable impermanence of all things. Yet we see change happening and we cling in an attempt to resist that which cannot be resisted. We suffer as a result. The battle in Congress over health care reform is a hard one. The insurance industry is pulling out all the stops (and all their cash) in an effort to turn reform into a give-away to the industry that will result in worse and more expensive health care coverage instead of actual reform.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over 60 members of the House of Representatives are standing their ground and making it clear that any health care bill that does not contain a Public Option will not pass the House. And they have the votes to ensure that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The response from the blogosphere has been nothing short of amazing. The original goal was $100,000. That was blown away in less than 24 hours. It was raised to $150k. That is in the past. It was raised to $250k and that was put in the distance as I typed this post. The current goal is $350,000 and we are well on our way to seeing that bid passed and raised even further.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have some change in your change jar now is the time to dig deep and contribute to the effort. This is about real health care reform for America. 47 Million Americans don&#39;t have health insurance. Almost all of the rest of us have health insurance that is insufficient. All of us pay more for our health coverage and get less in return then the rest of the industrialized world. We need real reform that brings America into the modern world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But this effort is becoming one of such staggering magnitude that it is about more than just this one battle. The people of America are speaking up and making it clear that when we said we wanted health reform we meant it. We are sending a strong message to the teabagging minority, to what is left of the Republican Party, to the obstructionist Blue Dogs, to the corporate owned New Dems (DLC), to the White House, to the progressive caucus, and to the rest of the world.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We will not be stopped. We will be heard. Our hired hands in Congress will do our bidding. Ann Coulter:&lt;/b&gt;  One of the key teachings of Buddhism is to develop enough space in your own mind that you can recognize, and choose how to deal with, the three poisons of greed, anger and ignorance. As root causes of suffering, we dedicate our practice to shining a light on the poisons in ourselves and others, in order to alleviate dissatisfaction. I can think of no better opportunity to practice compassion or deal with our own internal reactions than being faced with a living, breathing example of the three poisons run amok. Ann Coulter is a shining example of what happens when you (consciously or not) embrace the poisons and then package and sell them back to other people to increase their dissatisfaction without offering any hope or path to a more easeful way of being. This may be the best site site of all the best sites for Buddhists, as it offers an opportunity to practice how we deal with unskillful emotions in ourselves, and in others. What is this Four Noble Truths?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thus have I heard…&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now this, bhikkhus [i.e. monks], is the noble truth of suffering: birth is suffering, aging is suffering, illness is suffering, death is suffering; union with what is displeasing is suffering; separation from what is pleasing is suffering; not to get what one wants is suffering; in brief, the five aggregates subject to clinging are suffering.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the First Noble Truth. All of life is suffering. At first this seems a horrible view but it is not intended to deny that there is joy and happiness in life. Far from it. Rather to point out that suffering is an inevitable part of all aspects of life. Life is a wonderful thing. But ask any mother if there is some suffering involved in birth. Children are a source of great joy but ask any parent if there is not some suffering involved in parenting. And so forth.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The five aggregates, also known as the five aggregates of existence, or the five skandhas, are form, sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness. Our sense of self is tied up in these aggregates of existence. At the heart of any suffering is our clinging to some form or other of one or more of these aggregates in our mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now this, bhikkhus, is the noble truth of the origin of suffering: it is this craving that leads to renewed existence, accompanied by delight and lust, seeking delight here and there; that is, craving for sensual pleasures, craving for existence, craving for extermination.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the Second Noble Truth. Craving. Craving after what we do not have. Craving derived from the five aggregates of existence and given body and strength by our clinging or attachment to them. Including, craving for the relief from craving, craving for the relief from our own delusions. This is the true source or origin of suffering.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now this, bhikkhus, is the noble truth of the cessation of suffering: it is the remainderless fading away and cessation of that same craving, the giving up and relinquishing of it, freedom from it, non-reliance on it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Detachment from and extinguishment of our craving and clinging behaviors and nature. If you’ve ever wanted someone else (a child or spouse perhaps) to do something and experienced the powerlessness of watching them do what they want to do regardless of your wants and desires then you know clearly the nature of craving and clinging. If you’ve ever freed yourself from the resultant suffering simply by detaching yourself from your own desires for that person then you have experienced the cessation of that suffering. It is as simple, and as hard, as that.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now this, bhikkhus, is the noble truth of the way leading to the cessation of suffering: it is this noble eightfold path; that is, right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what does all this have to do with health care?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Without going too much deeper into Buddhist thought which traverses the borderlines between western philosophy, psychology and religion, let’s see how the eightfold path might clear some of the muddle going on in Washington, DC as well as the deep fog enveloping the traditional media reporting on the debate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right view:&lt;/b&gt; bi-partisanship, triggers, co-ops, public options, market competition, socialism, single-payer, profit margins, trillion dollar price tags. In what way do any of these describe a working health care system?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Right view would be to start by looking at the problem. What is, are, the problems with health care? Primarily, that some 45 million or more don’t have access to affordable coverage; that the costs for those of us that do are spiraling out of control; that the current structure of our health care system is unable to address these problems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right Intent&lt;/b&gt; then, would be to define goals that solve the identified problems. We need a health care system that is affordable and accessible for everyone regardless of economic status, changes in status (unemployment, age, sickness, marriage, divorce, etc), health or lack of health (“pre-existing conditions” in other words).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This health care system must be designed to provide at least basic health care needs for everyone and then, as cost and resources allow, expands available health care services to everyone up to the point where resources are no longer available (OOOOH! Scary! We’ll talk about that some more later).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Going back to Right View for a moment, Right View is one that isn’t driven by an “I got mine” attitude but rather by one that includes the needs of everyone. A self-centered view (Wrong View) sets people at cross-purposes, creates inefficiencies in the system and the market place and ensures that we do not achieve the best possible health care system for all. An inclusive view (Right View) is a cooperative one without wasted effort, wasted services, wasted dollars and wasted lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right Speech&lt;/b&gt; is honest and forthright about our needs and intent. Right speech is not wasted on talk of “bi-partisanship” and “market competition” and “socialism” but rather on problems and solutions. It isn’t spent talking about profit margins but rather about meeting the needs of the people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Right Speech demands a health care system that works for the citizens and doesn’t stop demanding it until the problem is solved.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right Action&lt;/b&gt; is working towards creating that solution. Right action involves compromising between the realities of cost and the realities of need. Right action does not include compromising need in order to gain votes. Right action does not include compromising need in order to appease powerful lobbyist dollars. Right action knows when to compromise want and desire and when to hold firm in order to ensure a system that actually works.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right livelihood&lt;/b&gt; steps back to take a look at other factors in play. Right livelihood involves business practices that produce ill-effects, whether intentionally or unintentionally. Right livelihood is responsibility, personal and corporate. Right livelihood means replacing old technologies and power sources with new, clean, sustainable, renewable technologies and power sources. Right livelihood means recognizing where the line is between profit margins and ethical behavior, again, personal and corporate. Right livelihood means engaging in businesses that enhance the well-being of self and others. It means phasing out and ending business that harm self and others. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A healthy environment will make for healthier people. Healthy people have fewer health care needs. Less strain on the health care system means lower costs. Lower costs means greater affordability for all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right Effort&lt;/b&gt; is soft and non-threatening, peaceful and non-violent but also as immovable as a mountain and as irresistible as an ocean. Right effort listens. Right effort seeks to understand. Right effort seeks to form common understanding, to find common ground, to create consensus, and to move forward together as a unified whole.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Right effort does not stop but it does so without attachment or stubborn clinging. Right effort does not get side tracked by anger or frustration… or self-centered greed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right mindfulness&lt;/b&gt; remembers what the problem is, what the goal is; what suffering is; what the cause of suffering is, what the cessation of suffering is, what the path leading to the cessation of suffering is. Right mindfulness is open, unconditioned. It does not overlay a situation with its own pre-conditioned views. Right mindfulness meets the needs of self and others equally as they arise for the betterment of all beings. Right mindfulness remains open and unconditioned in order to not get lost in the moment, its tangents, its frustrations, its delusions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Right Concentration&lt;/b&gt; remains focused on solving the problem at hand. It doesn’t get lost in the past or the future. It resides here and now. It is only here and now. By existing here and now it does not get distracted or confused by propaganda, sales pitches and fear mongering.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Right concentration understands that governments are formed by common consent of the governed in order to meet their common needs and solve their common problems for their common benefit. What is lacking is discussion of what the actual goals and needs are.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It seems to me that there are two high-level categories required for health care coverage:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Basic Care&lt;br /&gt;2. Catastrophic Care&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Currently we incorrectly call basic care coverage “insurance.” There is no need for insurance for basic care. These are basic services and goods like any other. Everyone needs basic care just as we need food, shelter, and love. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Insurance” is the proper term for catastrophic care. Most of us will need catastrophic care at some time in our lives. It is a broad category that includes things such as chronic illnesses, cancer, end-of-life care, etc. These are generally very expensive, catastrophically expensive, and usually unpredictable. For these things we need insurance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Basic care on the other hand includes things like regular periodic check-ups. Treatments for minor accidents, everyday passing illnesses, and a certain level of diagnostic procedures. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Diagnostic procedures need to be discussed further and perhaps even create a third category of coverage as many of these wonderfully useful and helpful, modern high-tech diagnostic procedures are very, very expensive and part of why health care costs in America are sky rocketing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Basic care should also include individual, child, and family health education; family planning services, pre- and neo-natal care, nutrition services and the like. Properly fed mothers make for healthy mothers. Healthy mothers in healthy homes make for healthy children. Healthy children make for healthy and productive adults. Healthy and productive adults need fewer health care services and therefore lower health care costs. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Forget for a moment that we are the richest nation on earth. Ignore that we already spend more than any other nation on health costs. Consider that you are designing a health care system for your people from scratch. Consider that you have limited resources. What do you do first?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, we must provide basic care coverage for everyone. That is the starting point. Everyone is covered. Everyone gets the kind of basic, preventive, and educational care that:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;a. everyone needs &lt;br /&gt;b. lowers the likelihood of other problems&lt;br /&gt;c. catches problems early&lt;br /&gt;d. lowers overall needs, risks, and costs&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ok, let’s say you’ve designed a basic care system that provides that for all your citizens. What do you do next? Next, we create an insurance system that provides coverage for catastrophic health care costs. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Third, we tackle the problem of those in-between needs and costs. With whatever resources are available we expand up to include more in basic care and we expand down to include more in catastrophic insurance as resources allow.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What else is involved? Research and development. One of the reasons we have such good health care in the United States is the sort of R&amp;D work that goes on in our high-tech society. This is very expensive but very worth while. The question is how do we encourage R&amp;D work and how do we compensate for it? That is a discussion for another time but one to keep in mind as the discussion moves to costs.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is missing from the above? Ummm… market competition, cost containment, co-ops, triggers, public options, socialized medicine and the like. Those are secondary concerns, secondary considerations having to do with politics, profit margins, and some very real concerns about cost. Some of that will come into play during a discussion about costs. But before we move there doesn’t it make sense to perform a needs assessment? To agree on what the problem is? To agree on what the goals are? At first blush it seems to be easily the worst of these two evils. And indeed, I think that is true. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, Rousseau&#39;s point here appears to be that the one comes before the other and makes the second not only possible but subsequently impossible to get rid of. I think this is true.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Corruption of our legislature by moneyed interests has weakened our democracy greatly. It has broken down the rule of law. It has led to alteration of our law, tax code, oversight and such to the benefit of the few over the needs of the many. It has created an environment of government for sale and one of power for powers sake in a dog eat dog environment where the idea that he who dies with then most toys wins.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is where the abuse of law in government comes from, this is what makes it possible. In an environment where the legislature was pure (or relatively pure), where money spoke no louder then poverty, law would be crafted towards the needs of the many not the wants of the few. Government policy would be geared towards the good of all not towards the greed of the few.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The needs of the many require that power be kept in check. Hence foreign wars of adventure and profit for the moneyed class would not be allowed. Principles of democracy would be sustained and advanced at home and would form the basis of foreign policy abroad rather than principles of hegemony and empire.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hegemony and empire are structures of power. They have no place in the democracy of the many. They exist only in a world governed by the power games of the few. No hegemonic dreams, no glories of empire mean no torture of opponents, no creation of an atmosphere of terror to oppress the masses, no slaughter of innocents, no invasion of the rights and privacies of citizens at home. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Corruption of the legislator weakens the legislature. The strongest branch of government here in America was intended to be the legislative branch. A weakened legislature leads to a power shift towards the executive. There are benefits to a strong executive. However, the executive is by nature a branch of individual power rather than government by the law of the many. And power tends to corrupt. Even the best person in possession of that much power will almost inevitably succumb to at least some temptation of power over law. A lower quality individual will succumb to such temptations quite rapidly and in full. Frankly, they will likely arrive in office having already done so.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, in attempting to solve the problems we have been experiencing in government it is necessary to take a two pronged approach. The first is what I call the band-aid approach. Immediately apply remedies to the problems at hand. An example of this would be to review all the signing statements and executive orders of the Bush/Cheney administration as well as the Office of Legal Counsel documents, immediately abrogating the obviously illegal, unethical or immoral ones. These are band-aids to stop the immediate bleeding.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The second prong is the most important and that is to get to the root cause and correct it so that such abuses of power do not recur. This means focusing on the legislative branch and the manners in which it becomes corrupted. This leads immediately to the influence of money. Money influences in many ways. In reviewing the McCain-Feingold campaign financing law the Supreme Court recognized correctly that money is like water, it will always find the cracks. This is true but it does not mean that reform, restriction and control are not possible. Quite the opposite. It means that the system needs to be structured in such a way as to best limit the cracks. It also means a constant review and audit of policies and procedures in order to find, monitor and plug the cracks before they break open the dam.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The influence of money is perhaps greatest in the electoral system itself. Most members of Congress are of the moneyed class. Political campaigns are won in virtually every case by the campaign that spends the most money. Consequently politicians spend more time raising money in campaigns then they do talking with the citizens they are supposed to represent.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are those who argue that campaign finance limitations are unconstitutional. If this is so then this is a clear case where the Constitution needs amending. The rich yachting dilettante poodles can give back even more. I have no problem with two gradations of &quot;affluent&quot; and &quot;rich&quot; in the tax code. Works for me. That’s how the tax code originally started out. Only the rich and affluent paid. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The bottom line is that thanks to conservative republican economic beliefs being dominant since 1980 exemplified by the &quot;drown the country in the bathtub&quot; views of Grover Norquist and the belief in the moral superiority of industry titans, Wall Street financiers...  you know... the Ken Lay&#39;s and Jack Abramoff&#39;s and Bernie Madoff&#39;s of the world... those guys and their unrelentingly, hard-working moral superiority... this country is facing the worst economic situation since the Great Depression of the 1930&#39;s.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The money flow has stopped. The banking industry is on life support. Loans can&#39;t be had and that means homes aren&#39;t being bought or sold, businesses aren&#39;t growing or starting, workers of all stripes, affluent and non-affluent, are being laid off, unemployment is at a 25 year high with a record 12.5 million unemployed workers. GM &amp; GE are in the tank. Read that again... GM and GE, the centerpieces of the once dominant American economy are both in severe danger. GE&#39;s stock price? $6.74. GM&#39;s? $1.47. Banking giant Citigroup? $1.01.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Right now is a time for all Americans to ask not what their country can do for them but rather what they can do for their country. Right now is a time when being patriotic is doing whatever is necessary to get this country back on its feet again. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My parents grew up during the Great Depression and came of age during WWII. They have told me stories of rationing, of walking the neighborhood gathering tin cans and other scrap metal for the war effort. Of living in one town after another criss-crossing the Midwest wherever grandfather could find work. They tell stories of sacrifice for the common good. The &lt;i&gt;common&lt;/i&gt; good.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The conservative republican mantra is &quot;tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts.&quot; I am all in favor of keeping taxes as low as feasibly possible. The fact of the matter is that this country was at its financial, industrial, economic, and productively strongest during the decades following WWII when taxes were sky high, unionization was at its highest, and income inequality was its lowest.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;After near 30 years of conservative economic policy income inequality is as high as it was during the gilded age, unionization is at its lowest, the average Americans income growth has stagnated for years, and our financial, industrial and economic strength is down and… taxes are at their lowest in years. America no longer leads due to conservative policy geared towards corporate greed. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Greed is a sin. Economic policy has been run by greed for far too long and we are now reaping the price of allowing it too run unchecked. Making money is a fine thing but it is not the only thing for which humans, society, and governments are made.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The conservative economic agenda has been one of class warfare. During the last couple decades of large increases in American productivity the produce of that increase has gone completely to the very upper class. It has not “trickled down” to the average American. Income growth at the top has been astronomical. The rest of us have experienced no real growth and in many cases loss of real, effective income.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The result? Recession edging towards depression.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;High incomes, personal, corporate, wind fall, capital gains, or estate need to be taxed at a high rate in order to sustain a healthy economy. In a healthy economy money flows. Money that flows in only direction stops flowing when it reaches its destination. That is what we are seeing today. Money has flowed only to the top for the last 29 years and now it has stopped flowing.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;This does not mean &quot;soaking the rich&quot; or stopping the haves from having enough to invest. It does mean that an extremist view of “tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts” and drowning the government in a bathtub are exactly that. Extremist. Extremist in the same way that terrorists and religious fanatics are extremists. And every bit as destructive. &lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;Keep taxes as low as reasonably possible but also as high as necessary in order to ensure income inequality does not get out of hand and in order to ensure that money flows throughout the entire economy. Trickle down is nonsense. Trickle up is the way to go. Raise the level of the many at the bottom. As they spend day to day, jobs are created, goods are produced, small businesses and large are strengthened. Profits increase. And as profits increase incomes of the folks at the top increase as well. This is not socialism as the screamers like to scream. This is simply sound economics. It is also morally sound.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A free market is one with oversight and accountability. A free market is one with known and fair rules. A free market is one that takes into account all costs of production… including environmental costs to water, air and soil. A free market is one in which favored industries do not receive tax breaks and/or subsidies that allow them to profit from unprofitable ventures or to have an advantage over competing industries and products.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The government should stay out of business as much as possible. Fair and free competition can be very productive. However, there are some places where the government is the best or only vehicle in which to solve or nurture societal needs. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The last couple decades have been decades ruled by the sins of greed and gluttony. Sins come about from excess. Excess leads to disaster. We have witnessed the culmination of excessive disaster these past 8 years. It is now time to reign in the excess. Clean up the mess. Sweep away the wreckage. North Carolina came over to us one election cycle earlier then I expected but I consider that a very nice treat not a surprise. All the other states fell as expected. Except Indiana. Why did we win Indiana? And how do we build on that?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think pundits, pollsters, strategists, political consultants and politicians are likely to make some serious mistakes in evaluating this past election and using it to predict future results. Two major factors came together uniquely in the 2008 election that will not be repeated in the future. Those two factors are the complete and total disaster that was the Bush/Cheney administration and Barack Obama, the first African-American to be nominated and subsequently elected President in the United States of America.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, while some Democrats turned delusional in their victorious ecstasy gloat about “permanent Democratic majorities” and Republicans do whatever the Republican equivalent of navel gazing is while wailing and gnashing teeth over their massive defeat, the fact of the matter is that weak and poor governing on the part of Democrats could easily bring back the slim Republican majority that is their highest possible achievement level and return Democrats to the navel gazing self criticism that seems to come so easily to them. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During this past election cycle Democrats were energized by the opportunity to finally be rid of the Bush/Cheney disaster and the desire to ensure that it was not continued by another Republican. Minorities and liberals amongst Democrats were further energized by the opportunity to finally advance the civil rights movement that has been stalled since 1968 by electing the first African-American to the Presidency. Make no mistake this is a huge barrier that has been broken. Independent voters were similarly energized by the opportunity to be rid of Republican mis-rule and the desire to give Democrats a chance to dig us out of this mess. Reasonable and responsible Republicans, the same.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Which brings us to Indiana. Indiana is a very rural, conservative, white, Republican state. The last time it voted Democrat for President was in the Lyndon Johnson landslide against Barry Goldwater in 1964. Prior to that it was FDR’s first 2 elections during the depression. Going backwards between then and the birth of the Republican Party in 1860 Indiana has voted Democratic only 4 other times and of those 3 were in the 1800’s. In 2004 it was a 60% - 39% Republican state.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, is this just an anomaly like 1964? Or is there something to be learned here? FDR is the only one to put back-to-back Democratic victories together but even he didn’t manage to win Indiana in his next two elections. Working with that small amount of information… is it economic populism? And none whatsoever for House Republicans despite their 0 votes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&quot;All the talk about bipartisanship that we have heard over the last several months went down the drain,&quot; House Republican leader John Boehner complained on Friday.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No counter quote from House Democratic leadership.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Obama also ran into a wall in his effort to build a bipartisan cabinet when his choice for Secretary of Commerce, Republican Sen. Judd Gregg, withdrew his name from nomination.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No mention of Obama’s having already brought in other Republicans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One reason is that members of Congress don&#39;t necessarily share Obama&#39;s passion for bipartisanship. Congressional Democrats see a partisan mandate in the last two elections. The voters threw out the Republican Congress in 2006. Then they threw out the Republican White House in 2008. If that is not a mandate for Democrats to govern, what is?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No mention of House Republicans clear intent or comments about obstructing the Democratic agenda.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Republicans saw the stimulus plan as a challenge to their core principles.&lt;br /&gt;&quot;We aren&#39;t interested in growing the size of government,&quot; Boehner said on the House floor.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Oh really? Perhaps we should review House Republicans actions when they were in control and see just how important that principle really is to them. Oh… and by the way… it is pretty clear that the House Republicans core principle is gaining and holding power at any and all costs. Everything else is a secondary principle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Despite Obama&#39;s outreach to them, congressional Republicans felt excluded by the Democratic majority. At the same time, some House Democrats balked at the spending cuts made by the Senate in order to get even a modicum of Republican support.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No mention of the White House removing sections of the original bill that Republicans objected to and then still didn’t allow a single one of their members to vote for.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One reason for public suspicion: The stimulus plan came only a few months after the deeply unpopular Wall Street bailout. Most Americans resented the fact that the federal government -- indeed, the Bush administration -- was spending hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out the institutions that were responsible for the financial crisis.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ah yes. What was that about core princples and growing government? How much money did the Republicans authorize a Republican President to spend?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Republicans will keep up a chorus of complaint and might try to undo pieces of it. If the economic recovery is slow -- and Obama has warned that it may take years, not months – &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Particularly if the Republicans continue to work against the interests of the American people by obstructing the President’s agenda.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;… the plan will be a continuing issue of partisan controversy. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Of course it will. Experts make it clear that in fact (pun fully intended) people make their decisions based on emotions. They point out that Republicans won elections during the 1980’s and 1990’s by appealing to emotion and that Democrats lost by counting on the facts to speak for themselves. Be that as it may, it is still important to pay attention to the facts and learn what they have to say. So, let’s take a look at some facts from the 2006 and 2008 election cycles.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The American People speak loudest through elections. In the 2006 election cycle the American people sent a strong message regarding their opinion of the Republican Party by handing the Democrats a clean sweep of the Republicans.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 2006:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats gained 6 Governorships by defeating 1 incumbent Republican and capturing 5 previously Republican held open seats.&lt;br /&gt;Republicans gained 0 Governorships.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats gained 31 US House of Representative seats by defeating 22 Republican incumbents, taking 8 previously Republican held open seats and 1 previously Independent held open seat.&lt;br /&gt;Republicans gained 0 House seats.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats gained 6 seats in the US Senate by defeating 6 Republican incumbents.&lt;br /&gt;Republicans gained 0 Senate seats.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A complete sweep of this sort had never happened in the history of American electoral politics. Republicans did not win a single seat held by a Democrat. Not one. The American People took control of the US House away from the Republicans and gave it to the Democrats. The American People took control of the US Senate away from the Republicans and gave it to the Democrats. The American People took control of the majority of the 50 state Governorships away from the Republicans and gave it to the Democrats. At the State Legislative level Democrats also had sweeping victories taking majority control of several state legislatures but it was not quite the complete shutout seen at the federal and gubernatorial level.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the following election cycle of 2008 the American People continued with the strong, loud and ought to be clear message they are sending (shift to present tense intentional) to Washington by virtually duplicating the clean sweep of 2006 with a resounding victory for Democrats across the board.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2008 was a Presidential election year. The American People took the Presidency away from the Republicans and gave it to the Democrats by electing Barack Obama to be the American People’s President of these United States of America with over a 9,500,000 vote margin. This translated to over a two thirds margin in the electoral college. A dominating, landslide victory for the Democratic candidate. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This margin completely swamped the combined margin of the previous 2 Republican Presidential victories combined. George Bush’s electoral vote margin was a slim 5 in 2000 and a larger 35 in 2004 for a combined total of 40 electoral votes compared to Barack Obama’s single election margin of 192 electoral votes. An almost 5 to 1 ratio. The popular vote is even more demonstrative of the American People’s opinion of the Republican Party. George Bush won the 2004 election by roughly 3 million votes and, you may recall, lost the popular vote in 2000 by roughly a half million votes. This combined 2.5 million votes is again swamped almost 4 to 1 by Barack Obama’s 9.5 million vote victory.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But wait. There’s more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Also in 2008:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats gained 1 Governorship by winning 1 previously Republican held open seat.&lt;br /&gt;Republicans gained 0 Governorships.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats gained 21 US House of Representative seats by defeating 14 Republican incumbents, taking 12 previously Republican held open seats.&lt;br /&gt;Republicans defeated 5 Democratic incumbents. 4 of these were seats Democrats had won from Republicans in the 2006 sweep. Only 1 was from a long term Democrat and that was the indicted William “Cold Cash” Jefferson for whom Democrats did not turn out to vote.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats gained 8 seats in the US Senate by defeating 5 Republican incumbents and taking 3 previously Republican held open seats.&lt;br /&gt;Republicans gained 0 Senate seats.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The combined two-cycle total is:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats:&lt;br /&gt;1 President&lt;br /&gt;1 Vice President&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;7 Governors&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;47 US Representatives&lt;br /&gt;14 Senators&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let’s look at what the American People had to say from another angle:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Republicans:&lt;br /&gt;-1 President&lt;br /&gt;-1 Vice President&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-7 Governors&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;-47 US Representatives&lt;br /&gt;-14 Senators&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is admirable that the newly elected President Barack Obama wants to heal the divisions in this country. It is important that these divisions be healed. It is also admirable that he is reaching out to Republicans and attempting to include them in his administration and in discussions about the direction of the country under his stewardship. And it is admirable that he has made a point of reaching out to segments of American society that consistently voted for Republicans during their narrow victories in the early part of the decade and remained with the Republicans during their crushing defeats in 2006 and 2008. This is important and I hope he continues to do it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However… the American People have made clear that they have rejected Republican policy and Republican governance. Resoundingly so. The newly elected President of the United States of America has been given a mandate his predecessor never had. His mandate is the same as his campaign theme… &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Change. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The newly elected President and 111th Congress have been in office just under a month now. The Republicans that remain in elected office in Washington have made it clear that they intend to obstruct the agenda and mandate of the Majority Democrats to the best of their ability. This was made no clearer than their lock-step NO vote on the Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan in the House. Zero Republicans voted in favor of the bill even after Democrats agreed to drop certain provisions important to Democrats and the American People. Both Republicans and Democratic Leaders should make note of that 0 number. The American People elected 0 Republicans the last two election cycles. 0 Republicans voted in step with the Democrats that the American People did vote into office. Be assured that the American People are well aware of the relation between those zeros and their relation to the coming 2010 mid-term elections as well.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Democrats in the US Senate, US House, and the White House have a strong and unequivocal mandate to govern as Democrats. While they should continue to reach out to their Republican colleagues in an effort at re-creating the bipartisanship that once governed this nation effectively this must not be done at the expense of heading the voice of the American People and advancing the Democratic Agenda that the American People overwhelmingly voted for in 2006 and 2008.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is admirable that President Obama has nominated multiple Republicans to serve in his cabinet. It is particularly remarkable that they have included such Republicans as Judd Gregg. The news that Mr. Gregg decided today that he simply could not work with the President should not come as a surprise to anyone. His views have always been too the far right fringe that the modern day Republican Party holds. There are very few “moderate” Republicans left in elected office these days. Perhaps 3 total. Mr. Gregg’s inability to work with the President during this time of economic crisis is akin to the Republican House caucus voting against the American People’s economic recovery act. There can be no mistaking where the Republicans priorities lie. They are lock-step with the hard line far right fringe agenda that the American People have so overwhelmingly rejected.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thank you for trying Mr. President. But it is time to move on to accomplishing what we sent you to Washington to do. You have a lot of work ahead of you and no time to waste in doing it. There are plenty of highly qualified, capable Democrats that are more than willing to roll up their sleeves and work hard on advancing the agenda We the American People elected you to put into action. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Note:&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is a cartogram of what America looks like. What if we see the funds from the bailouts go to increasing the rapidity of off-shoring to India, China, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Will that be the payoff taxpayers are expecting? I don&#39;t think so -- but few are talking about it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And then he suggests...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Any big loans or bail-out equity acquisitions should come with a fundamental new condition: U.S. job creation and penalties for off-shored positions. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That should be the price of dipping into the public coffers -- for all firms, whether financial or manufacturing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Personally, in theory at least, I don&#39;t think we should be bailing these bastards out at all. They took risks, let them suffer the consequences of those risks. Their business model failed. Let them fail. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the real world I have no interest in seeing the economy that is so closely tied in with these companies fall any further then it already is. But I don&#39;t think we should be bailing these companies out. We should be buying them, kicking the people that ran them into the ground to curb, and then figuring out where we go from here for the betterment of all the people in this country and not just to save a few elite butts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But... in counter-point to Steve....&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I’m going to have to take the other side of this issue. Democracy, capitalism, and nationalism have all three only been around a few hundred years (roughly 1600-1700’s) though the seeds of each go back further. Of the three I would say that Democracy has been a smashing success though it is still in the experimental stage and could use some tweaking (particularly here in the USA). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Capitalism has shown some real strengths (promoting innovation and real economic growth) but it has also shown a great deal of instability, a tendency towards promoting one of the worst of human vices… greed… and an inability to promote the welfare of all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nationalism has shown no discernable positive effects whatsoever and frankly has been an absolute disaster. Not that the feudalism which preceded it was any better.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We are once again in a time of change. Democracy is here to stay and is spreading. It will continue to spread as long as the USA does not impede it by propping up dictators and undermining democratic movements as we too often did during the Cold War and still do, in the name of stability, to a smaller degree today.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Capitalism needs some serious work. Perhaps finding a nice synthesis with socialism so that each offset the others weaknesses while allowing the strengths of each system to do their thang.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nationalism is morphing into internationalism and this is a good thing. Nationalism is nothing more then an “us and them” mentality. It promotes nothing but an us and them mentality and is therefore incredibly harmful to all. Us… and them. Internally and externally. Arbitrary borderlines drawn through ethnic/linguistic groups are harmful. Arbitrary borderlines that tell a starving people that they have to stay on their hopeless side of the line rather than cross over into a more hopeful situation is not only harmful but it is just plain silly. It doesn’t work (see current immigration issue and the long history of human migration throughout the centuries). &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have no problem with off-shoring per se. And I say this as someone whose job is highly threatened by this latest economic downturn and as someone that works for a major name brand corporation that has been concentrating its efforts on international growth while engaging in lots of off-shore contracting. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The problem is in how globalization is being run. The problem is in not taking actions to level the playing field to promote the spread not only of good American jobs off-shore but also of the hard-earned (see history of labor in America) worker protections, benefits, and environmental protections as well.  The problem is having the corporate masters being the only ones at the table when discussing and setting the rules of globalization and therefore having only their bottom line interests being promoted which produces an environment that is separating their class from the nations that produced them and, more importantly, the history of human development that produced them. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This corporate master class is beginning to resemble the feudal lord class that preceded nations. Lords held fiefs in different places under different Kings and played a “great game” amongst themselves of power and wealth accumulation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Eventually a merchant, craft, and learned class developed along with a landed gentry that established a middle class with distinctly local rather than international interests. Thus began the shift of power from lord and sword to merchant and economy. In the process tying down the lords, establishing of citizen rights and the need for boundaries within which those rights were guaranteed (along with the establishment of stable economic rules of interest to this economic class). Power shifted from the sword to the coin and as time passed formerly feudal lords found their interests best served by merging with this economic class.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In globalization we see that process reversing as the winners of the inherently unequal capitalist game, exacerbated by abuses built into the system by the Bush administration in particular but not solely. The last few decades have seen this top economic class &quot;game&quot; the political system through the spread of money in order to see the rules of the economic game changed in order to accelerate their further enrichment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Through the development of internationalism following World War II and the eventual breakdown of national barriers through globalization this top economic class has once begun to resemble a feudal class of lords of commerce with interests in many different nations and therefore no ties to any particular nation, individual King, Prime Minister, or President... or the middle and lower classes (now known as “consumers” rather than the antiquated term “serfs” or now almost equally antiquated term “citizens”) that they feed off of. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One possible solution would be to try and pin these feudal lords and their corporate fiefs back to the nations and peoples from which they sprang. I think this is a doomed strategy under the truism that “you can never go back again.” Human history, individually and collectively, always moves forward for good or ill. I also think this is the wrong approach because it is a form of protectionism which has been proven again and again to cause more problems then it solves. Protectionism like nationalism is an us and them mentality. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Us and them leads to greed. An “I got mine to hell with you” approach to life. A lack of compassion and in its worst forms de-humanization of whoever is unlucky enough to be “them” this time around (see &quot;niggers, nips, krauts, gooks, sand-niggers, towel-heads, and wet-backs). This is one of the things those of us on the left despise most in the right-wing fringe (which is a fine example of us and them thinking all in itself).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Us is ok. Them is not. Us needs preserving. Them needs killing if they get in our way. And it doesn’t matter if “our way” is towards what we need or towards more than we need. It doesn’t matter if “our way” is taking away from their abundance or from their essential needs. Us and them overwhelms all other considerations and drowns out even the possibility of conversation about mutual needs, mutual wants, mutual assistance, and mutual cooperation towards common, potentially shared goals. In an us and them environment there are no common goals. There are my goals and my goals only. Such a mind set leads to war and much unnecessary death, dying, and suffering.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The spread of corporate interests across national borders can be a very good thing. The sharing of economic interests across national borders can be a very good thing. Economic interests like stability. Economic interests like security and prefer not to be disrupted in pursuit of their goals. I have no problem with off-shoring. But I have a big problem with the separation of corporate interests from any ties to the citizens of the lands in which they operate. International law, international rules, regulations, and standards need to cross national borders along with corporate economic interests. Corporations, like governments, need checks and balances. Corporations, like governments, need oversight. Neither governments or corporations are inherently evil things but they also cannot be left to their own devices without power and money leading the fallible humans that run them astray.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Likewise, natural resources need management that crosses national borders as well. Resources like water and air know no national boundaries. Other resources are found in abundance in one place but not in another but can be used and are plentiful enough to be used for the benefit of all. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Finally, humans everywhere are created equal, have certain inalienable rights, have basic subsistence needs that can be met given the still abundant resources of this world. There is no excuse and no defense for not meeting at bare minimum the basic subsistence needs of all humans for food, shelter, heat, health care, education and economic opportunity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would very happily see democracy spread, human respect, dignity, and rights spread, the best aspects of capitalism synthesize with the best aspects of socialism across the world, and nationalism go the way of feudalism.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like Steve, I do not trust the people that ran this economy and these corporations into the ground to anything else with the bail-out money then what they have done with the billions and trillions that have already flowed through their hands. We the People should not be bailing out entities that have no ties to us and therefore no incentive to repay our generosity. We the People should buy those entities that wish to be saved through our generosity. We the People should then take action to find real solutions to an economic system that clearly is not working as structured. Particularly &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.gutenberg.org/files/59/59-h/59-h.htm#part4&quot;&gt;Part IV&lt;/a&gt; in which he continues this process of knowing himself as existent. I am going to take this in a slightly different direction then he did but start at the same point.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All I really know for certain is me. I think. That thought exists. Therefore there is something which thinks that thought. I will call it “I” or “me.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What else do I know for certain? Nothing. Descartes takes this next step and says he doubts. He then states that doubt is lesser than knowing therefore knowing is a more perfect thing then the imperfection of doubting. He, in thinking, doubts, therefore his combination of knowing (perfection) and doubting (imperfection) is less then perfect, therefore there must be something more perfect then he. He goes on to use this as the basis for his proof of the existence of God (absolute perfection).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My question today is… What of the world, the universe? Is it real? Does it exist? I do not know. I’m not sure I can know. But let’s follow this path and see where it leads.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have already experienced doubt. In thinking the first thought, the fundamental principle that I exist because I think, what was my very next thought? “Is this true?” Is there a flaw in the logic? Is there a more fundamental truth underlying even this first principle? A review of the logical process concludes that it is correct. There is no flaw. I think, therefore I am. But I have no experienced doubt. So I know that doubt exists.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So what of the rest of what I perceive as reality? Does it exist? I perceive reality. I look down at my hand and perceive it. I call it “my hand” but is it me? It is a part of what I call “my body” but it is not me. It is my hand. I do not have any sense of existing in it. So where do I exist? My sense is that I exist behind my eyes. My eyes appear to be my primary receptors. My sense of touch and my hearing come in somewhere behind vision and my sense of smell lags behind. I do not perceive my self as existing between my ears nor do I perceive my self as existing behind my nose. And I certainly don’t perceive my self as existing spread out throughout my entire body that feels physical sensation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My mind perceives itself as being I. Mind perceives itself as having a body. Interestingly, Mind does not perceive the brain as being I. The brain, like the heart, eyes, ears, hand, feet, etc are a part of the body in which Mind perceives I as residing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sitting here, Mind perceives a world in which its body sits. It perceives a house, a desk, chair, computer, window, a cedar tree outside the window, a field and a hill, clouds, wind, rain, animals, and other people. Do all these things exist? I don’t know. Mind perceives these things therefore I know that they exist as concepts within Mind. My fingertips touch the keyboard so I perceive that both fingertips and keyboard have existence but that perception is within Mind. Consequently it is entirely possible that all of existence is within Mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I perceive that there was a Mother. I perceive that there is a Father. I perceive that there are siblings, wife, child, grandchild, in-laws, colleagues, friends, acquaintances, and strangers. I perceive memory and therefore time. I perceive a memory of childhood and that this childhood was real and existent. But, this memory is fragmentary and dreamlike. There is a sense of things forgotten. There is also a sense of this thing called childhood as a driver and shaper of the perceptions of existence of this thing I call “now.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This leads to two other pieces of knowledge. One direct, one circumstantial. The direct knowledge is that I know “now.” I do not know memory or previous time. I perceive it but I do not know it. I only know the present moment. I know I think. I know I exist because I think and I know that the present moment exists because it is the moment in which I think the thought. I do not know the moment that started me writing this morning. I perceive it as having been but it is past and I do not know it. As recent as it has been I cannot capture it and bring it into the current moment as certain knowledge. I know in this moment that I perceive a memory of that moment and that it is a recent moment but I do not know it as real. I only perceive a memory of it and that perception exists/occurs within Mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The circumstantial knowledge is fear. I know an emotional response called fear. I have a memory of a Mother. I have a perception of a memory of the death of this Mother. I have a concept of not ever being able to experience this Mother ever again and that concept is a difficult one that I cannot quite comprehend. I experience another piece of circumstantial knowledge… desire. This difficult concept of not being able to see/experience this Mother is driven by a desire to do just that. Mind tells me this is something that cannot be but unlike virtually all other concepts/perceptions Mind has experienced this one cannot quite be grasped and accepted as truth. But back to fear. I fear that I will forget her. Memory is fragmentary. Memory of childhood in which Mother was the primary feature of the universe that I experienced is mostly faded away into vague dreamlike memories. I fear that the perception of Mother is nothing more than this vague dreamlike stuff. And I know sadness. But I digress.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So there is a perception of time, place, people, history, As close as I am to my family I cannot truly know them in the manner that I know my self as existent. I perceive them. I believe these perceptions are real as I experience them but I do not know them for sure. I only know them as I perceive them. This is true of rocks and mountains, rivers, the sky, moon, weather, people, time, words, concepts, ideas, etc. I can only know what I call reality as Mind perceives it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the western tradition we talk of five sense of perception: sight, sound, smell, touch, taste. In Zen Buddhism Mind is added as a sixth sense perceiver. The Heart Sutra says:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind. No color, sound, smell, taste, touch, phenomena. No realm of sight, no realm of consciousness, No ignorance and no end to ignorance.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;div align=&quot;left&quot;&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Normally in the west we do not think of the Mind as a sense organ. But when I thought, “I think, therefore I am,” there was no involvement of eye, ear, nose, tongue, or body. There was only Mind involved. Mind perceives concepts without assistance from the other five senses. At the same time however none of the five truly perceive anything without Mind. They are data collectors but Mind does the processing. Zen Buddhism posits that there are eighteen elements of experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;sense object...... sense organ.... realm of consciousness&lt;br /&gt;color................ eye................. awareness of color&lt;br /&gt;sound............... ears............... awareness of sound&lt;br /&gt;smell................ nose............... awareness of smell&lt;br /&gt;taste................. tongue........... awareness of taste&lt;br /&gt;touch................ body.............. awareness of touch&lt;br /&gt;object of mind... mind.............. awareness of mental phenomena&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If a tree falls in the woods and there is no ear to hear it then it does not make a sound. It makes sound waves but until a receptor of sound waves receives the waves there is no sound. Once the waves are received there is sound but there is no concept of “tree falling in woods” until Mind perceives sound and conceives of the notions of tree, standing, falling, ground, and perhaps additionally woods, direction, distance, potential of danger and whatever else. All of these exist only as mental phenomena. The sense of sound involves the ear but all the rest are mental formations.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And so it is with all of reality. There is only Mind. Let us concede for the moment that there really are other people, that there really is a world and a universe, time, genealogy, and history. They still only exist as Mind perceives them. If there are multiple people perceiving the same moment each perceives it according to the constructions of their own minds.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is a wonderful story in &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.amazon.com/Flesh-Bones-Shambhala-Pocket-Classics/dp/1570620636&quot;&gt;101 Zen Stories&lt;/a&gt; that I usually reference as a description of the problem of communication but it also is a perfect exhibition of how two people experience the exact same situation completely differently. &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.101zenstories.com/index.php?story=26&quot;&gt;It’s short. Take a moment to click here and read it.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Two men experience and describe the exact same sequence of events and have two completely different mental conceptions of it. This is the way it always is. This is an extreme example but no two people ever have the exact same mental perceptions of phenomena. It is usually only slightly different but it is always different. Even people that are very close to each other. I’ve had surprising moments when one of my siblings described a shared experience in family life in quite a different manner then I perceived it. Similarly, despite our common upbringing the differences in how we have been experiencing and handling the recent death of our Mother shows stark differences along side commonalities in our perception and processing of this shared experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, even if reality really is real your perception of it and mine are different. Your reality and mine are different. My reality belongs to me and me only. Your reality belongs to you and you only. And a third person has yet a third mental formation of the reality we ostensibly share. Therefore there is no objective reality. There is no there out there. Bodhi means having no concept of existence or non-existence.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Q:&lt;/b&gt; What is the Buddha?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;A:&lt;/b&gt; Your Mind is the Buddha. The Buddha is Mind. Mind and Buddha are indivisible. Therefore it is written: &#39;That which is Mind is the Buddha; if it is other than Mind, it is certainly other than Buddha.&#39;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Q:&lt;/b&gt; If our own Mind is the Buddha, how did Bodhidharma transmit his doctrine when he came from India?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;A:&lt;/b&gt; When he came from India, he transmitted only Mind-Buddha. He just pointed to the truth that the minds of all of you have from the very first been identical with the Buddha, and in no way separate from each other. That is why we call him our Patriarch. Whoever has an instant understanding of this truth suddenly transcends the whole hierarchy of saints and adepts belonging to any of the Three Vehicles. You have always been one with the Buddha, so do not pretend you can ATTAIN to this oneness by various practices. [John Blofeld&#39;s Note: We cannot BECOME what we have always been; we ca only become intuitively aware of our original state, previously hidden from us by the clouds of maya.]&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Q:&lt;/b&gt; If that is so, what Dharma do all the Buddhas teach when they manifest themselves in the world?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;A:&lt;/b&gt; When all the Buddhas manifest themselves in the world, they proclaim nothing but the One Mind. Thus, Gautama Buddha silently transmitted to Mahakasyapa the doctrine that the One Mind, which is the substance of all things, is co-extensive with the Void and fills the entire world of phenomena. This is called the Law of All the Buddhas. Discuss it as you may, how can you even hope to approach the truth through words? Nor can it be perceived either subjectively or objectively. So full understanding can come to you only through an inexpressible mystery. The approach to it is called the Gateway of the Stillness beyond all Activity. If you wish to understand, know that a sudden comprehension comes when the mind has been purged of all the clutter of conceptual and discriminatory thought-activity. Those who seek the truth by means of intellect and learning only get further and further away from it. Not till your thoughts cease all their branching here and there, not till you abandon al thoughts of seeking for something, not till your mind is motionless as wood or stone, will you be on the right road to the Gate. [Blofeld&#39;s Note: These word recall the admonition of so many mystics - Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Sufi - who have committed their experience to words. What Huang Po calls the total abandonment of HSIN - mind, thought, perceptions, concepts and the rest - implies the utter surrender of self insisted on by Sufi and Christian mystics, Indeed, in paragraph 28 he used the very words: &#39;LET THE SELF PERISH UTTERLY&#39;&gt; Such striking unanimity of expression by mystics widely separated in time and space can hardly be attributed to coincidence. No several persons entirely unacquainted with one another could produce such closely similar accounts of purely imaginary journeys. Hence one is led to suppose that what they describe is real. This seems to have been Aldous Huxley&#39;s view when he compiled that valuable work &lt;i&gt;The Perennial Philosophy&lt;/i&gt;.]&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Q:&lt;/b&gt; At this very moment, all sorts of erroneous thoughts are constantly flowing through our minds. How can you speak of our having none?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;A:&lt;/b&gt; Error has no substance; it is entirely the product of your own thinking. If you know that Mind is the Buddha and that Mind is fundamentally without error, whenever thoughts arise, you will be fully convinced that THEY are responsible for errors. If you could prevent all conceptual movements of thought and still your thinking-processes, naturally there would be no error left in you. Therefore is it said: &#39;When thoughts arise, then do all things arise. When thoughts vanish, then do all things vanish.&#39;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Q:&lt;/b&gt; At this moment, while erroneous thoughts are arising in my mind, where is the Buddha? [Blofeld&#39;s Note: Is the One Mind then no longer present in me?]&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;A:&lt;/b&gt; At this moment you are conscious of those erroneous thoughts. Well, your consciousness is the Buddha! Perhaps you can understand that, were you but free of these delusory mental processes, there would then be no &#39;Buddha&#39;. Why so? Because when you allow a movement of your mind to result in a concept of the Buddha, you are bringing into existence an objective being capable of being Enlightened. Similarly, any concept of sentient beings in need of deliverance CREATES such beings as objects of your thoughts. All intellectual processes and movements of thought result from your concepts. [Blofeld&#39;s Note: Which bring the corresponding thought objects into existence.] If you were to refrain from conceptualizing altogether, where could the Buddha continue to exist? You are in the same predicament as Manjusri who, as soon as he permitted himself to conceive of the Buddha as an objective entity, was dwarfed and hemmed in on all sides by those two iron mountains.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;Q:&lt;/b&gt; At the moment of Enlightenment, where is the Buddha?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;A:&lt;/b&gt; Whence does your question proceed? Whence does your consciousness arise? When speech is silenced, all movements stilled, every sight and sound vanished - THEN is the Buddha&#39;s work of deliverance truly going forward! Then, where will you seek the Buddha? You cannot place a head upon your head, or lips upon your lips; rather, you should just refrain from every kind of dualistic distinction. [Blofeld&#39;s Note: Since we are the Buddha, to seek him elsewhere is to place a head upon our head.][My note: to seek the Buddha elsewhere is to ATTEMPT to place a head upon our head.] Hills are hills. Water is water. Monks are monks. Laymen are laymen. But these mountains, these rivers, the whole world itself, together with sun, moon and stars - not one of them exists outside your minds! The vast chiliocosm exists only within you, so where else can the various categories of phenomena possibly be found? Outside Mind, there is nothing. The green hills which everywhere meet your gaze and that void sky that you see glistening above the earth - not a hairsbreadth of any of them exists outside the concepts you have formed for yourself! So it is that every single sight and sound is but the Buddha&#39;s Eye of Wisdom. [Blofeld&#39;s Note: The Buddha&#39;s Eye of Wisdom commonly means the eye with which he perceives the true unity of all things. Huang Po, however, does not say &#39;perceived BY the Eye&#39;, but uses the phrase &#39;is the Eye&#39;, thereby identifying see-er and seen.]&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Phenomena do not arise independently but rely upon environment. [Blofeld&#39;s Note: I.e. the mental environment created by us.] And it is their appearing as objects which necessitates all sorts of individualized knowledge. You may talk the whole day through, yet what has been said? You may listen from dawn till dusk, yet what will you have heard? Thus, though Gautama Buddha preached for forty-nine years, in truth no word was spoken. [Blofeld&#39;s Note: Words belong to the realm of flux and illusion. The truth is beyond words, a silent and profound experience. The Buddha spoke of relative means. Consequences are not necessarily good or bad either. But it is a truth of physics that actions have reactions. It is a truth of philosophy that choices have consequences.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A man made a choice to get involved in public service.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The people of his state made a choice between him and somebody else on who would best represent them in the US Senate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They did this based on what he said about himself and his beliefs knowing that these would guide him in the subsequent decisions he would have to make in the Senate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometime later Vice President Al Gore made the decision to choose this man, Sen. Joe Lieberman, as his running mate and Vice Presidential candidate. He made this choice based on various factors but the main one was that this man would help other people chose him for President. For other reasons that choice didn&#39;t work out so well and we and the rest of the world have all suffered the consequences ever since.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman was known to be a man of integrity. He had strong beliefs, based his choices on those beliefs, and stuck by those beliefs no matter the consequences.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman made a decision to support the Bush War in Iraq. I strongly disagree with his choice but respect his right to make it and respect his right to stick by that choice... as blatantly obviously wrong as that choice has proven to be.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The beauty of our democratic system is that we get to review the choices we make for representatives on a regular basis and change them if we decide they were wrong or a better choice is available.&lt;br /&gt; &lt;br /&gt;The members of the Democratic Party in the state of Connecticut had the opportunity to review their previous choice of Joe Lieberman as their Senator and they rejected him. Primarily, but not solely, on his staunch support for the Bush War. Unfortunately however, Joe Lieberman got two chances that year and the people of the entire state of Connecticut overrode the decision of the Democrats by electing Joe Lieberman as an independent candidate to the US Senate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman was not happy with the decision of Connecticut Democrats but he made the decision to stick with the party and continued to caucus with the Democratic Party in the US Senate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But he also decided to stick, quite obstinately, with his support for the Bush War in Iraq and various other Bush-Republican positions that Democrats strongly opposed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The consequence of opposing the Democratic position so often on such integral issues and doing so in a very public manner is that many, many Democrats decided to oppose him equally as strongly. However, due to practical political situations, other Democrats decided to stand by him saying, &quot;He&#39;s with us on everything except the war.&quot; This was not completely true but that was the position they decided to take and they stuck to it. Part of their decision was to allow him to retain his seniority within the Democratic Caucus and prominent Committee Chairmanships that came with it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman then decided to support his friend and colleague, John McCain of the Republican Party, against his former parties candidate, Senator Barack Obama.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman then decided to actively, very actively, campaign on behalf of Republican John McCain against Democrat Barack Obama. Further, he decided to act as an attack dog (a role he had previously played while still a full member of the Democratic Party in an intra-party battle against Gov. Howard Dean) for the Republicans against Obama and engaged with very public, very strong, smear filled attacks against the Democratic candidate and the Democratic party.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman then decided to take it even further and campaign for other Republicans, including Republican Senators Norm Coleman and Susan Collins, against the Democratic Party candidates. In other words, he decided to actively work against the interests of the party caucus he had previously decided to join and which had previously decided to reward him by maintaining him as a member in good standing with seniority.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The election is over and now new decisions need to be made. Decisions and choices that have consequences just like all the previous decisions had consequences.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would suggest we take a clear view of the current situation and the choices that need to be made.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Democratic Caucus in the Senate has grown and as they approach a new Congress they must decide on leadership positions and the general pecking order within their caucus. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman as an independent will have a choice whether to ask to be allowed to caucus with the Democrats again or whether he would prefer to caucus with his friends in the Republican caucus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The members in good standing of whichever party he chooses then has a choice as to whether to accept or reject his request to be a member.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joe Lieberman has, by his actions, lost his previous good standing within the Democratic Caucus. One cannot work at complete cross-purposes to the group one is a member of and retain good standing. His actions are the antithesis of good standing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The logical process in the Senate Democratic Caucus organizational meeting would be to have current Democratic Senators aligned according to seniority followed by the incoming freshmen Democratic Senators. Assuming Independent Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders requests once again to caucus with the Democratic caucus, a decision would be made as to where he fits in. Odds are that as Bernie Sanders has acted with complete good faith with his Democratic colleagues and maintained a good standing with the caucus he has chosen to be a member of that he would be fitted into the seniority pecking order as if he were a full fledged Democrat.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Should Joe Lieberman make a similar choice to request to caucus with the Democratic Party then his request could be accepted or rejected. I would personally be tempted to reject him but would have no objections to accepting his humble request to caucus with Democrats.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, Joe Lieberman made a choice to not work in good faith with the Democratic Caucus and consequently to divest himself of his previous good standing within that caucus. Should he request and should his request be accepted his placement within the pecking order would logically be as last man. This means no committee chairmanships, no sub-committee chairmanships, no seniority ranking. Incoming freshmen with a clean slate have a higher standing than a member in bad standing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No chairmanships, no senior rankings for Joe. He chose to side with the Republicans. He chose to remove effectively himself from the caucus. It is a fait accompli. If he chooses to rejoin he starts at the very bottom.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If Joe doesn’t like that option then it is his choice, not the Democrats, to remain independent or to switch sides to the Republicans where it is then their choice where to place him in their pecking order.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One Democratic Senator expressed concern about a starting the new session with a &quot;messy fight&quot; in the Democratic caucus. There is no need for a “messy fight.” Joe effectively quit the caucus. Treat it that way. Allow him to rejoin if he wants but he rejoins with less seniority then the freshmen just elected.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is all Joe’s doing. It’s Joe’s choice. It’s Joe’s mess. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Neither he nor the mess belong to Democrats. Don’t claim ownership of Joe or the mess and you won’t own it.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Almost every article that discusses the &quot;Lieberman situation&quot; talks about &quot;revenge&quot; and &quot;retribution&quot; against Lieberman. While, hell yes, I would personally like to take revenge against Lieberman for his actions, that is not what this is about. He made a choice. Choices have consequences. The consequence of his choice to work with Republicans against Democrats is loss of good standing in the Democratic Caucus. The homogeneous spiritual brilliance is the One Mind, while the six harmoniously blended &#39;elements&#39; are the six sense organs. These six sense organs become severally united with objects that defile them - the eyes, with form, the ear with sound, the nose with smell, the tongue with taste, the body with touch, and the thinking mind with entities. Between these organs and their objects arise the six sensory perceptions, making eighteen sense-realms in all. If you understand that these eighteen realms have no objective existence, you will bind the six harmoniously blended &#39;elements&#39; into a single spiritual brilliance - a single spiritual brilliance which is the One Mind. All students of the Way knows this, but cannot avoid forming concepts of &#39;a single spiritual brilliance&#39; and &#39;the six harmoniously blended elements&#39;. In this passage it now goes on to state the emptiness of each skandha, analyzing them into the six sense faculties, the six sense objects, and the six sense consciousnesses, thus comprising the eighteen realms&lt;/i&gt; (dhatus).... &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;In addressing the interrelations of these three sets of phenomena, we divide physical forms into inner and outer. Inner form refers to the six sense faculties. Outer form refers to the six sense objects. The six sense consciousnesses arise through the interaction of sense faculties and sense objects. Seeing is one faculty, and shape, size and color make up its object. The same is true for the nose and smells, the tongue and taste, the body and physical sensation. These, the five ordinary senses, we clearly understand; the sixth faculty, the mind, is harder to understand.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First of all, the mind faculty&lt;/i&gt; (mana) &lt;i&gt;contains a physical and a mental component. The mind&#39;s sense objects are the mental phenomena people identify with, and include all kinds of thinking and tones of emotion, plus the symbols we use to understand and communicate these ideas and feelings. In fact, besides the five sense faculties and the five corresponding sense objects, all phenomena are sense objects of the mind. They range from enthusiasm to dread, desires to erroneous views, lethargy to distraction, verbal language to icons. One characteristic of these mental objects is that they always connect to the past or future, and are never in the present. Only sensation - a sense organ contacting a sense object - happens in the present. The consciousness aspect of each sense organ - that related to perception, interpretation, and response - is already past. And, as we stated earlier, the consciousness aspect of each sense organ is actually part of the sixth consciousness....&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The rest of the chapter can be finished at the link above to google books (highly recommended).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My eye... sees... an object. The eye is one faculty. The object is another. Seeing is the action, or more accurately, the interaction between the eye and the thing the eye sees. The same with the nose and the things it smells. Five senses, five types of objects sense, five interactions between sense faculties and sense objects. Fifteen in total.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All of these however, are faculties of mind. I don&#39;t know about you but I generally think of mind and eye as being one. The visual sense seems to predominate and the mind is sensed as being located directly behind the eye. But this is not in fact the case. The eye is but one sense faculty. The mind is something separate. The eye does not think. The eye does not interpret. The eye does not differentiate. The eye does not name. The eye does not know it is an eye. All of tht belongs to mind. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The eye sees. That happens now, in the present. The eye sends data to the mind. &lt;i&gt;After&lt;/i&gt; mind receives the data from the eye the process of interpreting the data begins. Color is named. Shape is differentiated and compared to previous experience and a determination is made. Square, rectangle, round, big, small, long, short, far, near. Friend, foe. Self, other. Safe, danger. Etc. This all happens after the fact in the discriminating mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So the mind is a sixth sense faculty. The data input from other sense faculties is the object and the process of discrimination is the action or interaction of the faculty with the object. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the process of knowing. Discriminate, compare and contrast, catagorize, name.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Non-discriminating mind simply receives the data as is. The process of discriminating, comparing and contrasting with previous experience, and catagorizing through the filter of pre-conceived notions of fear and desire is not activated. Reality is perceived exactly as it is rather than being attached and distorted by other not currently existing realities. It is what it is. Nothing added, nothing subtracted.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I once listened to an &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/&quot;&gt;Al-Anon&lt;/a&gt; speaker tape in which a woman describes coming home all upset and discovering her husband had done or not done something. She then proceeds to get upset with him saying, &quot;This is just like the time that you....&quot; Which he interrupts part way through by saying, &quot;Wrong husband.&quot; As it turned out she was taking out on him a long held resentment she had from the actions of her previous husband many years before.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The thinking process is a conditioned one. The conditions are that which has come before as stored through our limited and already onditioned understanding of these previous phenomena. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Blofeld commented:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;This points to those people who are capable of understanding the doctrine intelligently but who have not yet entirely succeeded in throwing off the burden of concepts.&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I know myself to be in the process of understanding this doctrine intellectually. None of us like it. Well, perhaps a fringe 1% or so gets off on it. But most Republicans don&#39;t like it any more then Democrats and Independents hate it with a passion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It&#39;s ok when we disagree on issues. It&#39;s ok when we disagree on solutions. It&#39;s ok when we disagree on priorities. It&#39;s ok when we disagree regarding private vs. public, state vs. federal, individual vs. community, domestic vs. international.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let&#39;s disagree. Let&#39;s talk about those disagreements. Quietly and calmly. Thoughtfully and most of all mutually respectfully. As Americans we can come together to tackle our common problems and craft solutions for the common good. Sometimes those solutions will follow a more conservative form and other times a more liberal form and sometimes a moderate combination of the two will work best.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But nothing will work when we allow ourselves to get caught up in the politics of division. The results of the last 8-12 years show us that truth all too clearly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The economy, our broken health care system, our broken governmental institutions, two unending &amp; unwinnable wars, fair vs. free trade, world starvation, terrorism and the desparation that feeds it, an energy crisis requiring a serious and sustained effort at converting to renewable and sustainable energy sources, an environmental problem growing day by day into a global climate crisis, signing statements and executive orders that need reviewing and reversing, world relations that need healing, and so much more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The incoming administration has their work cut out for them. They need and deserve the responsible help of all Americans regardless of political belief. That doesn&#39;t mean capitulation. It mean honestly working together to solve our common problems. It does mean ending obstructionism and the poltics of personal destruction and partisan divide.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today is a Beautiful day. This chapter is an example of exactly what Lao Tzu was talking about in the last one - obscure clarity, well-concealed jade.&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One of the features of eastern thought of the Taoist and Zen Buddhist sort is the idea of the primacy of intuitive knowledge rather than the rationalist knowledge that has been the overarching primary feature of western thought since the enlightenment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What you know without knowing is true knowledge.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This concept is very dangerous if not understood thoroughly. It is very easy to say &quot;Ok, I&#39;ll go with my gut instinct. Our minds are usually like a pool with a thousand constant ripples running through it. The ripples are our constant stream of thoughts. The reflection of the moon is distorted by all the activity of thought. If the wind dies down and nothing disturbs the pool then the water settles to a flat and placid mirror that accurately reflects the moon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Likewise, if our minds become settled, placid, quiet then the reality of our environment can be taken in without pre-conceived notions, prejudices, and concepts staining and distorting actual reality.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unstained, undistorted input allows us to respond according to circumstances, in-tune, in harmony, thereby leaving no traces because nothing has been forced, no exertion made because no resistance exists to a natural action.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Normal experience for humans beings is interpretive: &lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;No eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind. &lt;br /&gt;No color, sound, smell, taste, touch, phenomena. &lt;br /&gt;No realm of sight, no realm of consciousness, &lt;br /&gt;No ignorance and no end to ignorance.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The six sense openings perceive the six objects, interpret them for display and definition within the mind.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How do we not do that? But the people of the world do not awake to it, regarding only that which sees, hears, feels and knows as mind. Blinded by their own sight, hearing, feeling and knowing, they do not perceive the spiritual brilliance of the source-substance. If they would only eliminate all conceptual thought in a flash, that source-substance would manifest itself like the sun ascending through the void and illuminating the whole universe without hindrance or bounds. Therefore, if you students of the Way seek to progress through seeing, hearing, feeling and knowing, when you are deprived of your perceptions, your way to Mind will be cut off and you will find nowhere to enter. Only realize that, though real Mind is expressed in these perceptions, it neither forms part of them nor is separate from them. You should not start REASONING from these perceptions, nor allow them to give rise to conceptual thought; yet nor should you seek the One Mind apart from them or abandon them in your pursuit of the Dharma. Remove the filter of conditioning and pre-conceived notions of what we ought to be seeing, perceiving... and simply take in reality just as it is. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;See without seeing. Hear wth hearing. Know without knowing.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If we harmonize ourselves with existence in this way then our natural place in it will be clear. Our actions and reactions will be obvious and also in harmony with our environment. We will know without knowing. Many of us have spent the last several years fighting or the best possible voting technology here in New York as well as across the country.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another equally important feature of this typically crappy legislation which perhaps ought to be more properly known as the Hinder Americans Rights and Ability to Vote Act, is the requirement for the establishment of a statewide voter database within each state. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As with the idea of modernized voting systems, the idea of a statewide voter roll with uniform controls is not a bad one. The problem with HAVA is the loose language in the legislation that makes it quite possible for each state to screw up the process more completely then it already was.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Today we receive news that New York State &lt;a href=&quot;http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=731410&amp;category=REGION&quot;&gt;has purged 1.6 million voters&lt;/a&gt; from the rolls. At first gasp this sounds horrible. What right does the state have to purge voters from the rolls? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, reality is that voter rolls are very hard to maintain and always contain obsolete voter registration entries. If you have canvassed a town or district based on your localities voter roll you know how true this is. People move. People die. People get married or remarried and end up on the rolls under multiple names. 911 address changes result in all sorts of confusion and obsolete registrations. For example, the couple I bought my house from back in 1998 remained on the voter roll under the pre-911 street address after having moved out of state for several years after my wife and I moved in to the same home at the post-911 street address number.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So odds are that the vast majority of the 1.6 million voters purged from the rolls are valid clean-up of obsolete entries. Key words here are &quot;odds&quot; and &quot;majority.&quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As with the actual voting systems the keys to whether any of this works reliably or not are the processes and procedures built around the system. A voter database is a simple thing. Nothing fancy or new fangled in the technology involved. Adding new voter registrations is also a very simple, straightforward process. Cleaning up old and or invalid entries is another story altogether. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The good news for us here in New York is that Bo Lipari of &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.nyvv.org/&quot;&gt;New Yorkers for Verified Voting&lt;/a&gt; is, as usual, on the job. In a previous statement they talk of government &quot;destructive&quot; of the ends for which it was created and here they talk about government in terms of &quot;evils&quot; before lauching into a laundry list of the problems they were suffering at the hands of the English King in their times.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shewn, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed.&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prudence indeed. The Founders were dealing with a particular kind of trouble and making the hard decision of a complete break with their old government and creation of a new. Not something to be lightly entered into. But they also of situations less severe then their own. When government becomes destructive of the ends for which it was formed it is the right of the people to alter said government.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the conclusion upon declaring their independence from Great Britain they list another set of things that individual states (through their governments presumably) do:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do.&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thereby giving us a secondary level of what they believed governments are for. I say secondary because these particular items amongst others, I believe, follow from the primary ideas announced at the beginning as a matter of course in a society where government is instituted to represent the will of the people united to form a state and invest a government.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Moving to the Constitution of the United States we get a few more ideas of what government is for at the high level before getting into specifics and details of how &lt;i&gt;this particular&lt;/i&gt; government is to be formed and operate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Preamble:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&quot;We the People&quot; reiterates the idea of government instituted by the consent of the people and by no other force.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&quot;... in Order to form a more perfect Union...&quot; is a very interesting idea that is hinted at in the Declaration where it talks about the people altering or abolishing governments in order to institute one more conducive to securing our unalienable rights. The wording is such however that it deserves a fleshing out and discussion of its implications all by itself. &quot;A more perfect Union...&quot; implies understood imperfection and the need for an on-going process of perfecting more. We&#39;ll touch on this again and again as we move forward as this is what our politics and history, both past and future, is all about.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We then get into more specific purposes of what our vision of government is all about before getting into the details:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;... establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty...&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Note that these are part and parcel of forming &quot;a more perfect Union,&quot; comma. So here we have the idea that government is to:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. establish Justice&lt;br /&gt;2. insure domestic Tranquility&lt;br /&gt;3. provide for the common defence&lt;br /&gt;4. promote the general Welfare&lt;br /&gt;5. secure the Blessings of Liberty&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For who?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&quot;... ourselves and our Posterity...&quot;&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So... what do we have?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Government is formed from the power and consent of the People in order to secure the unalienable Rights of the People.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What are these rights that government is to secure?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness... among others.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What else?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;Safety and Happiness&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Anything else? Let&#39;s get a bit more specific...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. establish Justice&lt;br /&gt;2. insure domestic Tranquility&lt;br /&gt;3. provide for the common defence&lt;br /&gt;4. promote the general Welfare&lt;br /&gt;5. secure the Blessings of Liberty&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;6. Power to levy War&lt;br /&gt;7. conclude Peace&lt;br /&gt;8. contract Alliances&lt;br /&gt;9. establish Commerce&lt;br /&gt;10. and all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ok... all that makes a great deal of sense. Some scholars believe it is not one letter but a composite of fragments of several letters. I can believe this is true. One of the main subjects addressed throughout the letter is the collection of funds to be sent to the Church at Jerusalem.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The city of Corinth was quite wealthy, one of the richest cities of that time, and it is understood that the Church at Corinth was likewise. Macedonia to the north was considerably less wealthy but both were rich and living in abundance by comparison to the poor and impoverished of Palestine. One of Paul’s missions was to take up a collection of money from outlying churches and bring it back to Jerusalem which was the center of the faith at that time. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91436102”&gt;In 2nd Corinthians 8:1-4&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We want you to know, brothers and sisters, about the grace of God that has been granted to the churches of Macedonia; for during a severe ordeal of affliction, their abundant joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For, as I can testify, they voluntarily gave according to their means, and even beyond their means, begging us earnestly for the privilege of sharing in this ministry to the saints&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paul tells of the good example of Macedonia which not only gives according to their means but begged for the privilege of giving beyond their means in order to share in the joy and ministry of giving to those in greater need.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I gather from my reading that the Corinthians, as is often the case with those of great wealth, required a great deal of convincing and even conniving… I read heavy attempts at guilt trips in Paul’s writing to them… to likewise participate in the great ministry of sharing with those in need.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91436489”&gt;2nd Corinthians 8:5-7&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;and this, not merely as we expected; they gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God, to us, so that we might urge Titus that, as he had already made a beginning, so he should also complete this generous undertaking among you. Now as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you—so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paul states how one overcomes self-centered reservations… “They gave themselves first to the Lord and, by the will of God to us….” And thenm goes on to use flattery (that other parts of the letter show are perhaps not deserved)… “Now as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you – so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paul continues in a more serious and straightforward manner to discuss exactly what it is he is asking and expecting as the right thing for a righteous people to do:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91436815”&gt;2nd Corinthians 8:8-15&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I do not say this as a command, but I am testing the genuineness of your love against the earnestness of others. For you know the generous act of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that by his poverty you might become rich. And in this matter I am giving my advice: it is appropriate for you who began last year not only to do something but even to desire to do something— now finish doing it, so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;‘The one who had much did not have too much,&lt;br /&gt;   and the one who had little did not have too little.’ &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The opening line in this passage is a very honest one. I am not your boss giving you a command. The choice is yours but I am testing you. Are you as good and sincere as your poorer brethren to the north? He then ups the ante. Jesus is the example. As he gave himself for your sake are you willing to do likewise for the sake others less fortunate then you? It is appropriate for you to follow your words with the actual deed. He then sets the standard well known &lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91437163”&gt;from Luke 12:48&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But note that Paul does not demand. Very specifically does not demand. He said that at the start, “I do not say this as a command,” and the example of the Macedonians shows their extreme eagerness to be able to partake in the gift of giving. Paul says, “so that your eagerness may be matched by completing it according to your means. For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has….”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paul makes a very explicit linkage here. It is not enough to give. You have to want to give. Your eagerness to give of yourself even to an extreme, the Macedonians gave beyond their means, Jesus Christ gave his life, is the important part. Giving begrudgingly is of little to no value. “The gift is acceptable….” This gift is the two-way gift of giving from which all benefit beyond the face value or measure of what is given. Likewise, the gift given begrudgingly is rendered of considerably less value to both the giver and receiver as a result of the lack of eager spirit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Paul then tempers his words in a very realistic and honest fashion once again:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has—not according to what one does not have. I do not mean that there should be relief for others and pressure on you, but it is a question of a fair balance between your present abundance and their need, so that their abundance may be for your need, in order that there may be a fair balance. As it is written,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;‘The one who had much did not have too much,&lt;br /&gt;   and the one who had little did not have too little.’ &lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“… according to what one has – not according to what one does not have.” He states that “it is a question of a fair balance” between ones abundance and another’s need. Again and again, from old testament through new, the bible talks about taking care of the poor, the widow, the orphan. The responsibility the individual and the community has to take care of the needy. How many of the stories highlight this? And go beyond by discussing the tension of giving beyond ones own tribe or people? Here the example is clear. The Macedonians and Corinthians are giving to the poor of another people and another land altogether. This tension is nowhere greater then in the stories of Christ himself who is constantly shocking everyone by reaching out to the Samaritan, the sinner, the leper, the Roman, the outcast of any and all stripes. His work is with those in need not with those of plenty. They have received their reward he says(He also says they have as much a chance at heaven as a camel has of getting through the eye of a needle but that is another story).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The concluding verse is an interesting one. It is taken from &lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91438790”&gt;Exodus 16:18&lt;/a&gt;. Which is the story of manna from heaven.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91439002”&gt;Exodus 16:13-21&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground. When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, ‘What is it?’ For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, ‘It is the bread that the LORD has given you to eat. This is what the LORD has commanded: “Gather as much of it as each of you needs, an omer to a person according to the number of persons, all providing for those in their own tents.” ’ The Israelites did so, some gathering more, some less. But when they measured it with an omer, those who gathered much had nothing over, and those who gathered little had no shortage; they gathered as much as each of them needed. And Moses said to them, ‘Let no one leave any of it over until morning.’ But they did not listen to Moses; some left part of it until morning, and it bred worms and became foul. And Moses was angry with them. Morning by morning they gathered it, as much as each needed; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is the bread the Lord has given you to eat. Take as much as you need for your household and no more. And Moses warns them, leave none until tomorrow. Why? What would that mean? If each takes according to their need, no more, no less, then there will be none saved over to the morning. If there is some saved over to the morning then it means more was taken then was needed. And what happens then?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“It bred worms and became foul.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And further, day after day as each received what they needed what happened to the over abundance? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“It melted.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;And such is the fate of the riches of this world. It is so much dross that melts away at the end of the day. Each according to their need. No more, no less. The self-centered greed that causes us to gather more than we need breeds worms and fouls us. And that which we gather in our greed melts away as the morning dew in the sunlight anyway so what has been gained? And how very much has been lost?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is an interesting counterpoint to &lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91437163”&gt;from Luke 12:48&lt;/a&gt;:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and from one to whom much has been entrusted, even more will be demanded.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I think Paul finds the balance point between these two ideas and brings it all together in:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href=”http://bible.oremus.org/?ql=91439722”&gt;2nd Corinthians 9:6-15&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The point is this: the one who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the one who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. As it is written,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;‘He scatters abroad, he gives to the poor;&lt;br /&gt;   his righteousness endures for ever.’ &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. Through the testing of this ministry you glorify God by your obedience to the confession of the gospel of Christ and by the generosity of your sharing with them and with all others, while they long for you and pray for you because of the surpassing grace of God that he has given you. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/blockquote&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God provides. If God provides abundantly it is only for the purpose of you in turn giving to those in need. This is the ministry of each according to their need. No more, no less.
