Outputmessage is Bernard Farley: A vocalist, producer, DJ, record label owner, and math nerd who currently calls Washington, DC home. Starting out as an IDM producer while working on a master’s degree in mathematics, Farley saw his first music release on the esteemed Ghostly International label at the young age of 20. Receiving praise from the likes of URB and Pitchfork for his unusually melodic and catchy brand of IDM, Farley has since gone on to expand his sound to include his own vocals as well as elements of pop and electro. In 2010, Farley released his second album, Autonomous, a set of 12 uplifting pop songs (Last.fm, 2011).
The man behind Melodium is Laurent Girard. He was born in 1975 and lives in Angers, France.

In 1999, he contacts the label Tugboat to ask for a cd of one of their bands, Isan. At the same time, he sends some of his own compositions, and receives a kind reply from Glen Johnson telling him to send him other tracks.
Glen Johnson sent then the tape to a friend label, Static Caravan, who released his 7” called “Rhythmil” (Last.fm, 2011).
Retic was formed in 1973 (Indianapolis, USA) by a chance encounter and subsequent love-spawning of both his parents. The result was a fully-formed being (Douglas Teike) who began to show interest in all things musical from a very early age. Early compositions committed to cassette tape were rhythmic in nature and it was soon apparent that drums and percussion were his major fascination. In addition, he began to experiment with synthesizers and other sundry keyboard instruments from about age 10 onwards. After a brief stint mastering the baritone at age 12, Douglas moved on to percussion and was involved in several groups, academic and otherwise. These groups included high school jazz band, marching band, a metal band in college and playing bass for an alternative rock group called THE MULLIGRUBS.

His college curriculum consisted of music theory and composition, as well as the technical stuff: Recording, computer music, acoustics, C-sound, Max. This was a launching point for the creation of sequenced, computer-based music. After an extended period creating several works that were never officially released to the public, Douglas self-released 2 discs in 2007. They are SATURN DAY TRAJECTORY and Saturn’s sister release, an ambient work called COLOR IS A WEIRD WORD. His 3rd LP, SOMNOLENT MASSIVE was released in early 2009 (Last.fm, 2011).
Cepia (pronounced “SEP-ee-uh”) is the sound of industry meeting with the vague memories that rest somewhere in the back of everyone’s mind. Processed bells lilt and chime at their whim, while kick drums skitter and scramble to catch up. Infinite layers of clicks and drones provide the glue that holds it all together perfectly.

Minneapolis-based Huntley Miller, the man behind Cepia, fuses all the most affecting elements of pop, rock, and jazz composition, polyrhythms, countermelodies, calculated structures, and melodic hooks, into a cohesive electronic whole. After playing bass in several different bands over the last decade, Miller began his foray into electronic composition, and his virtuosity permeates every mesmerizing moment as he gives the ‘listening music’ genre a much-needed eye opener. Endless, unidentifiable rustles and squeaks underscore the seamless tapestry of mournful melodies and driving, mechanical rhythms explored within these tracks. The Cepia sound is complex, though urprisingly accessible, enveloping the listener and offering new discoveries with every listen (Last.fm, 2011).
“Literally one of the best experimental artists currently making tracks… Layers and layers of experimental-electronic goodness… focus constantly shifts from leads to bridges to the beat and back around again…using sounds in Ableton Live that many others would have difficulty with, but instead forms an analog/virtual opus.” — Women’s Radio

Jones slips through the veils of defined sound, weaving cello, violin, woodwinds, rhodes, electronics and sound design through unique instrumentation.

Her tracks have been released with several reputable international labels as Iboga, Spun Records, Aleph Zero, Ultimae, Native State Records and she’s celebrating the launch of her new label Cartesian Binary Recordings.

Two of Jones’ albums have been chosen in the top 25 essential albums of the year on NPR Echoes Radio in 2006 and in 2009.

Multiple tours around North America and Europe have lead Rena to perform at some of the worlds most established cutting edge electronic music festivals; Glade Festival (UK), The Secret Garden Festival (UK), Shambhala Music Festival (Canada), Lightning in a Bottle as well as tour support for Plaid and opener for Ladytron.

Jones’ live sets are a potent sonic session. She orchestrates her violin and cello over hand crafted beats melding the organic with the electronic. Her performance is a sophisticated example of the modern movement in electronic dance and ambient music.
Andrew Coleman is perhaps better known for his alter ego Animals on Wheels. Under that moniker, he released two albums and an EP for the highly respected Ninja Tune label , in addition to numerous 12”s and compilation appearances on his own landmark Bovinyl imprint. Along with Bovinylmate Adam “Vert” Butler, Coleman was largely responsible for the UK jungle offshoot “drill n’ bass” scene (Last.fm, 2011).
Technicolor is the one-man soundscaping company, Justin LaBo. He’s responsible for a diverse collection of downtempo, breakbeat, and techno gems. LaBo’s creations have a trademark ambient quality, always underpinned by lurking, ominous bass rhythms and filtered, phased-out sounds, always in motion. This is the sound of one man and his machines in the twilight between a clear, sunny day and an all-night techno party. An XLR8R magazine review of the debut Technicolor album, One Touch Test Strip, contained this now-famous quote: “I like this album, if only for its complete lack of adherence to ‘dance music’ stylings. Purists beware, music lovers recommended” (Last.fm, 2011).
The Bionaut was an alias used by Jörg Burger, a gentleman who was one of techno music’s earliest supporters and a champion of Cologne (Germany) minimalism music. The Bionaut issued several tracks on Europe-only releases from 1993 through 1997, all of which are increasingly hard to find and/or out of print. But Matador Records took care of the problem in 2001, by compiling the 18-track collection Lubricate Your Living-Room.

Burger has issued albums under a variety of different aliases over the years, including burger/ink, the Modernist, Trinkwasser, and Geometric Farms, and in addition to his musical adventures, Burger has run both the Popular and Eat Raw record labels (Last.fm, 2011).
When Jatun’s eponymous debut dropped in 2007, dream-pop enthusiasts and headphone purists alike were astounded by its thoughtfully detailed songs & meticulous textures. Subtle, distinct variations embedded in teeming walls of sound egged them on for a louder-than-loud listen. There was just no denying the nuanced cycles of swarming & disintegrating buzz; conduits for robot melodies. However, there is always room for more depth and sonic textures.

With Blanket of Ash, Jatun offers up another dose of clandestine vocals, heavy layers & unmistakable intensity: A vinyl-only collection of metallic drone & spacejunk beats for the truly frequency-dependent.

Jatun is Scott Worley (Portland, OR), Blanket of Ash is his second album on Other Electricities and is available digitally, and on limited edition vinyl (Last.fm, 2011).
Since establishing Bathysphere in 1998 and the downtempo label Deep-Water Recordings a year later, Sofalofa [aka] Chris Cousin has produced for the likes of Hint, Normal Position and Monkey Magic as well as performing in the folktronic outfit Chin Chin at festivals including The Big Chill and Summer Sundae.

Sofalofa marries lush, cinematic soundscapes with equal measures of breaks and glitches, captivating audiences on the dancefloor and appealing to fans of ambient and IDM music alike. His releases for the Deep-Water / Bathysphere Recordings label have secured their place in the record boxes of Big Chill DJ’s such as Mixmaster Morris and Pete Lawrence along with DJ Pathaan and Jon Kennedy. His tracks have appeared on the Ai compilation ‘Station’ and Fabric’s ‘Amalgamation of Soundz’, receiving rave reviews from DJ Magazine and XFM’s Nick Luscombe amongst many others.

Using a combination of vintage outboard equipment and a huge array of plug ins, Sofalofa meticulously treats each individual sound to the extent that the electronic trickery is almost transparent. Found sounds and classical instruments like oboe, cello and piano are twisted and morphed with granulated reverbs transporting each element into fractured space. His sound has been likened to that of Remote Viewer, Four Tet and early Plaid with melody and subtlety playing an integral part in their music (Last.fm, 2011).
Grimy Styles’ innovative approach to purely instrumental dub roots reggae has made them one of the most popular draws in the competitive austin live music scene. Applying the traditional dub techniques of King Tubby to an array of influences spanning classical, roots, jazz and metal via cutting edge mixing techniques and unique onstage signal processing, Grimy Styles realizes a bold, panoramic vision of dub. While their dynamic live shows always get bodies moving, their melodic & imaginative soundscapes amply reward the careful listener (Last.fm, 2011).
As an artist, he is interested in exploring how non musical mediums such as images, objects, landscapes, and weather can be used as conceptual material for musical ones. Much of his music is motivated by places and abstract experiences. Such things might be a photograph, passing over a landscape in a plane, an interesting work of architecture, or the way lighting effects an environment (Last.fm, 2011).
Inf, Infinite, Infonet, Infomanic, De Infonetische Ghast, Captain Chromosome, Mr. Sarcasm, Dirk Digger…the list of self-serving monikers runs longer than roll call at a Wu-Tang reunion for this Dutch producer and emcee.

Inf (who answers to Bas te Braak at family functions) began rapping 15 years ago in the early 90s. Forced to learn production to back his rhymes, he began making beats in 1995…he thinks. Over the years, the necessity of digging records for samples has consumed his life, developing an unhealthy addiction. Inf’s bicycle can be found outside of every record store and thrift shop from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. Lunch hours and sick days are mere corporate loopholes doubling as extended digging opportunities. Such behavior patterns compounded over time, plunging Inf to the level of the socially inept (Last.fm, 2011).
Emperor Penguin is America’s premier electro jam squadron. They produce a fine mixture of found sounds, samples, beats, and loops. Theirs is a bicoastal electro/turbo-bleep group, the two coasts being Chicago’s Lake Michigan and a creek which runs by Stanke Manor in central Indiana. Starting as a series of bizarre experiments involving primitive sampling techniques and frozen pizza, the tympanic duo of Melvoin Stanke and DJ Lazlo Minimart has rapidly evolved into a full-service jam factory, cranking out hit after hit. The time of Emperor Penguin is now! Expect victory.

Emperor Penguin introduced their fun-loving analog-happy synth-funk to the world back in 1999 with a release called Shatter the Illusion of Integrity, Yeah on My Pal God Records. The campy sounds of “Area White” can be found there. The rather alarming drum and bass shuffle “Stephen Hawking Vs. the Galactons” is from the duo’s second album, Extreme Gaming, which also surfaced in ‘99, a few months after their debut. In 2000, the prolific pair went on to release Mysterious Pony, which contained “Chill or Be Chilled,” and in 2001 they released their Damn! EP, a collection of extremely damaged robotica which features the vocoder-happy disco send-up “Disco Party in the Castle of Love (Tonight)” (Last.fm, 2011).
THE YEAR IS 2001 AND THE PLACE IS TEXAS. Stones Throw head honcho Peanut Butter Wolf is DJing while a sharply dressed young man approaches the DJ Booth with his Prom date in tow to formally introduce himself. Thus begins the story of James Pants.

What began as a dream Prom night to see his hero DJ went to an internship at the label to eventually landing the ultimate fantasy by being signed to the roster and championed as the ‘next big thing’ by none other than Peanut Butter Wolf himself – on top of critics like Busy P, Urb, XLR8R, & Dazed & Confused Magazines.

Mr. Pants is a purveyor par excellence of that unmistakable “fresh beat”: 80’s Soul, Electro Boogie, Early Rap, New Wave, & Post-Punk Disco, all of which can be found on Welcome where James plays drums, keys, guitar and sings (Last.fm, 2011).
Hailing from Huntington Beach, California, Ryan Stephenson under the Glen Porter moniker started producing music four years ago with the help of some friends and dusty records from the dollar crates. Influenced by Sixtoo, Buck 65, and Keola, Stephenson crafts his own sound out of disjointed guitars, sinister beats and harmonic atmospherics. When asked about his alias, he produced the following explanation: “Originality found itself on the edge of death, ready for suicidal sentiments until something came from Glen Porter’s broadcast. Changed the tide, sent his thoughts towards the epicenter of self-demise so he could kill this reliance on the past to explain personal nature. Answers never found, understanding such concepts are in the sound of silence during passionate day dreams. Cannibalizing the self soon became a fading memory, no longer held by the desire to explain things, he was left to create a symphony no one would ever hear until his heartfelt intent could be felt with the slightest gesture of turning the middle finger up so it meant love” (Inner Current).
