Using your phone or tablet hotspot as WiFi

Enjoy Netflix shows and update Facebook with epic roadside photos from your caravan with a reliable mobile WiFi connection. This can be done by creating a hotspot with your mobile or tablet to use your WiFi just like you’re at home. Hotspotting is simple and convenient. To hotspot you can use your mobile or tablet to create a WiFi signal with a mobile signal that will then allow internet access.

The techy explanation is that you’re leveraging your phone’s reception to the nearest tower and turning it into a mini router. This creates the ability for other devices to connect to your phone. The benefits of this type of connection are that you’re giving your caravan WiFi access making it easy for you and the family to stay connected on the go. And you will be able to enjoy apps and devices that require WiFi.

Hotspotting comes with a lot of positives, but it also has its negatives. The performance level won’t be the same as a Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) because those hubs use antennas to access more power. Also, only a limited number of devices will be able to connect.

When it comes to hotspotting the more data you have the better which is why we’ve made it easy for you to upgrade to a contract that gives you more or tap into data add-ons on the go.

Using public WiFi

Free public WiFi is extremely common, and you can literally get it anywhere you are. Malls, café’s, airports or in the case of caravanning holiday parks. Free WiFi is affordable and allows you to save money on data charges while do more internet related activities on the go. It also aids productivity by allowing you to choose your office and work from anywhere.

The downsides of public WiFi are its reliability, security, and low speeds. Public connections go down a lot because they can’t support heavy user loads, which makes them unreliable. They’re also more susceptible to attacks because of how many people are using the network in one area. If your device doesn’t have a strong firewall at the time of access, then you’re putting yourself at risk especially if you’re sending out confidential information. Public WiFi is notorious for operating at slower speeds. Too many users on the network results in a loss of bandwidth which leads to a slow network speed.

Use a MiFi device

MiFi is a term used to describe a wireless router that acts as a mobile WiFi hotspot. This is the perfect solution for your motorhome/ caravan. You can use MiFi or MiFi dongles anywhere you can connect to WiFi, creating a localised, portable signal. MiFi also allows you to connect multiple devices. MiFi taps in 4G and 5G mobile phone networks and this connection can be shared between laptops, tablets, smartphones, and some gaming consoles. So, you and the family can take your streaming and downloading habits on the road without a hitch!

In 2003, Concorde took its final flight, Ronaldo made his Manchester United debut, Peep Show came to our TV screens, and 50 Cent ruled the charts. People even got excited about the Nokia 3200.

So much has changed. Smartphones were non-existent and data was hardly ‘a thing’. Now our network carries nearly a third of all mobile traffic in the UK.

In order to continue offering a reliable service to all our customers we need to upgrade parts of our network. This means that by the end of 2024, we’ll be switching 3G off.

Don’t worry, nothing’s going to happen anytime soon. And by the time we do switch off our 3G technology, we’ll have upgraded all our sites to 4G.  Plus, we’ll continue to roll out our award-winning 5G network at the same time.

So, why are we doing this? 

We’re proud of what we’ve achieved and the standards we’ve set over the years, but we need to look to the future.

The government has requested that all public 2G and 3G networks are switched off by 2033 at the latest, to create new and exciting possibilities. So we’re moving fast and staying one step ahead.

The demand for data is huge these days with the average customer currently using a whopping 19GB per month. This figure is increasing by 20% every year as more and more devices and objects become ‘connected’. So, we need to invest in newer, more efficient technologies that give our customers all the benefits of being on one of the UK’s biggest networks.

By switching off our 3G network, we can free up resources and focus on improving our 4G and 5G services for all customers.

How does this affect your current 3G service?

3G can’t carry as much data as 4G or 5G, so at the moment it’s struggling and the experience you’ll be having on 3G won’t be as good as it should. Once the whole country is covered by 4G or 5G, you’ll start to enjoy an improved mobile experience.

All our customers will eventually be in either a 4G or 5G area, so the transition will be totally seamless. You’ll literally get a better service overnight with faster download speeds, better quality streaming and a generally smoother experience.

Since 2018 we haven’t sold any 3G only devices and all our 4G devices have been VoLTE capable (which means ‘voice over LTE’ 4G network) and ready for the future. However, if you’ve got an older 3G-only or non-VoLTE device, as the switch off day approaches, we’ll help you stay connected. It’ll also be worth checking our Device Compatibility tool.

The Xiaomi 12 vs 12 Pro Camera

The Xiaomi standard for cameras is quite high, from phone to phone the 50MP rear camera is a staple for the company. Both the 12 and 12 Pro share this front camera that was designed to amplify low light photos, but this is where the similarities end.

Get studio quality shots on the 12 with it’s 32MP front camera or focus on the smallest details with the 5MP macro lens. Use the main camera to capture dynamic and sharp daytime photos during all your summer activities. In terms of shooting indoors, the Xiaomi 12 retains a significant amount of detail and sharpness.

In comparison the 12 Pro is simply a step up and probably better suited for those who love to dabble in phone photography. The Battery Life

Considering their palm sized compactness, you’d think the 12 and 12 Pro were lacking in the battery department but it’s the complete opposite. The 12 has a reasonably sized battery at 4500mAh and the 12 Pro is only slightly larger at 4600mAh so you’re not really missing out on much capacity. Both phones can last through a regular day of normal phone activity, but if you’re a gamer don’t expect them to last the entire day. Xiaomi did a great job of making sure the charging is superfast for users who are a bit more screen time focused such as gamers and vloggers. The 12 can get to 90% within just 30 minutes of charging and the 12 Pro comes with a 120W charger for an even faster charge.

How does the Xiaomi 12 stack up against the Xiaomi Mi 11?

With the release of the 12 and 12 Pro, there is bound to be comparisons to the older version the Mi 11 because the phones look so different on the surface. Consider the 12 series an upgrade and not a complete exit from what you already know and love about the Mi 11. The first immediate difference is the size, as the 12 series is considerably smaller and mainly for those who enjoy a compact looking phone.

The main differences lie in the design of the cameras, performance, and battery life. The Mi 11 came out the gate with a curved camera that was soon copied in the industry. This designed is stripped back in the 12 series as Xiaomi has reverted to a simple rectangle camera. If performance is what you’re looking for then the 12 series is slightly more impressive than the Mi 11. The 12 series is Xiaomi’s first phone to use the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Chip and will most likely be the standard moving forward.

S22 displays

The Galaxy S22’s 6.1 inch Full HD+ display has a refresh rate that adapts to match your activity. So, scrolling through your social media doesn’t drain the battery as much. For the S22+, the display’s got 1750nit brightness. Which basically means you can watch in bright sunlight and still see clearly. Then the S22 Ultra takes it one step further, with Galaxy’s brightest display ever – 80% brighter than an OLED TV. 

On top of the impressive functions of the displays, there are also loads of different options for your screen. If you go to Settings > Display, you’ll find tons of screen choices like: 

• Adaptive display. This lets you access 120Hz mode. It’ll use a little more battery, but gives you smoother viewing when you need it. 
• Dark mode. Everything’s dark mode now, isn’t it? Whether you’re into your dark or light screens, you’ll find this at the top of the display settings. 
• One-handed mode. Great when you’ve got your hands full or limited space; it shrinks the screen for easier access. Find this under ‘Advanced features’. 
• Eye comfort shield. It’s good for pre-bed scrolling as it reduces blue light and is less harsh on sleepy eyes. 
• Display resolution. With three resolution settings to choose from, tap ‘Screen resolution’ and select whichever you need.

• 8K video mode. For ultra-high-resolution videos, open the Camera app to video mode, and select the aspect ratio icon. You’ll see an option for 8K, which will give you a crystal-clear result. 
• Night mode. The night photos you can take on all the phones in the S22 Series surpass everything Galaxy’s done in this area before. But switching to night mode even in low light gives you a much better result, too. Just tap the moon icon when your camera’s open. 
• Shot suggestions mode. This isn’t a new feature to the S22 Series, but it’s still a handy one, with even better pictures than before. You can turn this on in the settings within the Camera app. 
• 108MP mode. This is only on the S22 Ultra, but it’s totally worth it. The Ultra isn’t set to 108MP as a default; you have to select it to get the full resolution. You’ll also find this within the aspect ratio icon. 

S22 Safety and security

Samsung have taken their security even further with the Galaxy S22 Series. With a new Secure Folder for your private info, the content that you want to keep for your eyes only is safe. Plus, you can use anti-tracking to stay safe online. And, across the S22, S22+ and S22 Ultra, SmartThings Find helps you remotely track your phone, and block and wipe your data if you lose it. The secure Digital Wallet has had a massive upgrade too. 

As well as all this, there are some shortcuts and suggestions – some of which are standard Android, but good to know anyway – which will give you that extra peace of mind: 

• Call screening. Blocking nuisance calls now only takes a couple of taps, with the Samsung’s caller ID and spam app. Head to Settings > Apps > Default apps > Default caller ID and spam app, and select ‘Phone’. 

• Change your app permissions. You can have full control over how much data you share with your apps. Go to Settings > Privacy > Permission manager, and you’ll see all your apps listed with all your permission types. You can manage which app uses which permission from here. Even if you’ve done this on a previous Android phone, it’s worth double-checking as the setting may not have carried over. 
• Set up Secure Lock. This will make sure your phone instantly locks as soon as you hit ‘standby’. Go to Settings > Lock screen > Secure Lock setting. 
• Smart Lock. This lets you tell your phone which other devices to trust, so you can unlock your phone through those. Like a Smartwatch. Head to Settings > Lock screen > Smart Lock. 

Remember, though, all your additional biometric locks etc. are only as strong as your PIN. Make sure your PIN isn’t easy to guess, as biometric and other additional security layers can often be bypassed. 

Save your S22 battery

• See what’s using the most battery. You can view your biggest battery drainers, and see your battery history under Settings > Battery and device care. 
• Dark mode. It’s likely that having a lot of bright, white light drains your battery faster than darker colours. 
• Reduce your display brightness. You’ll find this in Settings. 
• If you don’t need it, turn down your screen resolution. Find this in Settings > Display.
