A facinating story on an alternative theory to the causes of Mad Cow's Disease.  This is about one man,Mark Purdey who went against the UK Government, firstly to challenge in court, how organic livestock are treated with chemicals, and secondly, an alternative scientifc theory to the causes of Mad Cow's Disease.  The book is called Animal Pharm.

This leads to a wider theory on the causes of modern neurological diseases.  I talk with Mark's brother Nigel Purdey about Mark's story, and other theories which include Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Sue Knight is the author of NLP at Work, and the third edition of the book is released in Nov 2009.  We talk about NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), what's new in this edition of the book, the writing process compared with the previous editions. There are new chapters on Clean Questions, Humour, Time, which we discuss, along with other elements of NLP and life! 

It's always good to talk to Sue, and one area we discuss is modeling for someone who is recovering from a stroke, and I promised I'd put up a link to the amazing talk given by Jill Bolte Taylor at the TED Conference about strokes, Jill Bolte Taylor's own stroke, and her recovery. And Sue and I have a great talk at the end of the interview about creativity and publishing.

This interview was a great chance to introduce the ideas of Green and Sustainability, especially in a business context, and without hugging trees!  Most of us know we need to do something about Sustainability, and equally, most of us aren't doing much about it yet.  Trish and Heather have written a great book to show us the easy steps to be doing something, anything!

We talk about Trish and Heather's backgrounds leading to writing the book.  The steps towards making a business more Green, the benefits to business in being Green, and the wider issues such as eating bacon!

Dave Carroll, creator of United Breaks Guitars, the song and viral YouTube video, is my podcast guest.  Dave created a song and video in response to United Airlines declining to compensate him for his guitar breaking whilst in transit.  The song and video is Dave's response.

I've always been curious about videos that go viral on the internet, especial now with YouTube, how they are created and the effect they have on the creator, and stars of the videos.  We see a minute or two, but often there are weeks and months of thought going into their creation.  I don't think most of the famous viral videos were intended to spread exponentially, and they seem to capture a moment in time, which usually can't be replicated.

Having seen Dave's video, coincidently, from a Twitter link from David Weinberger, whose Cluetrain co-authors I've interviewed in the previous podcasts, I looked into Dave Carroll's work, and realised that United Breaks Guitars, is only a very narrow view of his music creations and style, so I've included some other music in the interview.

Dave now performs as a solo artist, but has a back catalogue from his previous band, Sons of Maxwell.  It will be very interesting to see what happens when the follow up songs and videos to United Breaks Guitars are released, and which direction Dave's music career goes on this Internet connected world.  I'd love to speak to Dave in a few months time, to take a retrospective look at what's happened this week, and a broader look at his music.

Rick Levine co-author of Cluetrain, and Chocolatier/Founder of Seth Ellis Chocolatier, a small chocolate manufacturer in Boulder Colorado, is my guest. We talk Cluetrain of course, and 10 years on, and more importantly, Chocolate!  Who is Rick Levine?  I’ve wanted to know for ages since he’s less prolific on Google, than his other co-authors. But of course, he alone wrote Cluetrain, because on many searches for Cluetrain, his name is alphabetically the first!!

It’s 10 years on from Cluetrain, and the 10th Anniversary Edition of Cluetrain is now published, with a new introduction and chapters by the authors.  Having recently interviewed Chris Locke, I’m on a roll here with Rick Levine, the second of the four co-authors kindly giving me time for a nice long interview.  Two co-authors interviewed, and two to go!! You have to give all four co-authors credit for being so accessible over the years, and practising what Cluetrain preaches, with open and accessible conversation.

It’s a long interview. I thought about cutting it into episodes and editing it to make us both look good, but what the hell, I hate reading a magazine article which suddenly says; “cont on p183”.  Go buy the new Cluetrain book, have a look at Gonzo Marketing which has now become prophetic, and of course visit Chris/Rageboy on Facebook.

Next, I’ve had to have a think about where to house the mp3 files.  Lots of hosting gives you big storage, but many restrict big bandwidth downloads of several thousand.  You do the numbers.  A 30MB podcast mp3 file, downloaded by 100 subscribers, is 3GB.  That will nearly bust most monthly hosting agreements.  1000 downloads of 30MB file is 30GB, 10,000 downloads is 300GB which are the numbers for a popular podcast.  100,000 downloads is 3TB!! 

And there are 2 issues.  One is download bandwidth by MegaByte, the other is download speed for the all the people downloading at the same time.  I’ve asked around.  Amazon S3 looks interesting and low cost.  Using TypePad’s 10 GB and then their recommended link to Coral and host sites such as Libsyn may work. I’m giving blip.tv a go, because they’re used to hosting and delivering much bigger files than my mp3 podcasts, and it’s free!

I’ve slightly messed up the file naming from Blip, because the file takes the name of the user TonyGoodson, and not the showname the3moments.  Forgive me for the time being!

I’ve spent quite a bit of time on the file naming convention, which no-one seems to have standardised on.  I still don’t know the difference between a “–” (hyphen) and a “ _” (underscore) though I suspect that servers like to work with underscores.  Also, there are some who recommend shortening to t3m instead of the3moments and separating the date in year-month-day.  It looks like the file names will be

TonyGoodson-the3moments_20090614_guestname_###

where the ### is 3 numbers which blip.tv randomly adds to the file!!  That’s what you get for free hosting!!

I spent quite a bit of time understanding the mp3 tag editing, and I’ll have to wait and see what it looks like in iTunes.  Talking of iTunes, the iTunes Australia directory for podcast submissions has been displaying “We are currently experiencing technical difficulties. Please try again later.”  This has gone on for 3 days now.  Thanks a lot Apple, unless it’s something not working at my end.  How would I know?  In the 3 days I’ve been waiting, I’ve created an iTunes image for the store, something eye-catching and easy to read when it’s down to 72x72 pixels.  That took a bit of time to design even though it looks so simple.

What I’m submitting is the Feedburner RSS feed, instead of using the TypePad feed.  It’s seems easy to set up and with lots of add-ons to analyse the subscription and download stats.

And not just the famous and the stars, but some of my favourites were Barbara Castle, Jonathan Miller, Peter Ustinov, Michael Caine, Bette Midler, and latterly, Paul McCartney talking about his ego.  That was Part 1.

Part 2 for me, came just before the start of podcasting, and in fact partly created podcasting.  The Chris Lydon interviews. Wonderful political and technological conversations published as mp3 files to download and listen to.  This coupled with Doug Kaye’s I.T Conversations, led to a world of mp3 downloads for me.  And still to this day, I manually download mp3s to listen to instead of using podcast software to automatically download to my laptop or mp3 player.

Since 2003 I’ve pondered who I’d like to interview.  I’ve never had the platform to interview anyone.  Sure I’ve podcast on The Productivity Show, dabbled, had some great guests, but I realise I want to go beyond productivity.  And I’ve feared and procrastinated for 5 years.  No longer.

It’s simple really. All I have to do is list the 100 people I’d most like to interview in the world, and invite them!!  Yeah sure, most won’t reply, or will say no, or it will become too difficult.  But you know what?  At least 5 will say yes, and it will be magnificent.

So I’m starting with a simple website, a banner, and name…The 3 Moments.  Why “The 3 Moments”?  Well, when I look at the people I’d like to interview, it’s about their journey, their highs, their lows, the ending of something and that “Oh Shit” moment, the Harrison Owen (Open Space Technology) writes about in his book Wave Rider, and how people deal with set-back and grief.  If you ask someone to draw a timeline of their life from birth to now, the chances are there will be two or three peaks/troughs, so let’s hear about those things, The Hero/Heroine’s Journey.

Build it and let them come.  So let’s see what happens.
