The grand daddy of all bowl games featured #1 Ohio State against #2 University of Southern Cal with running back O.J, Simpson. The Ohio State Buckeyes had Rex Kern at quarterback, a graduate from Lancaster High School of Lancaster, Ohio. When the dust had settled the Trojans had five turnovers, two by Simpson, as the Buckeyes rolled over the Trojans 27-16. Kern was named player of the game.

On January 12, Super Bowl III was played and quarterback Joe Namath, predicted his Jets would defeat the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. Namath lived up to his prediction as the Jets stunned the odds makers and the Colts 16-7.

The Top Ten TV shows for the 68-69 season were;

1. Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In

2. This great song with one of the best voices in Motown history actually spent 7 weeks at #1. It peaked on December 14, 1968 and remained there throughout the remainder of December and the month of January.

Other great songs from the month of January were: Crimson and Clover/Tommy James & The Shondells, I'm Gonna Make you Love Me/Diana Ross & Supremes & The Temptations, B.J. I recall living in Ohio during the 50s & 60s how we hoped and prayed for a White Christmas. It just did not seem like Christmas unless it snowed. Maybe it was Bing Crosby song and movie "White Christmas" that made us wish for it. I also remember the TV shows that had a Santa Claus that read letters from young boys and girls and on Christmas Eve you would see him pack his bag and turn out the lights to end that year's show. You knew he was on his way that night to your house to bring the goodies. Do you remember special Christmas programs during the season. Never were the shows called holiday shows. These special presentations added so much more to the excitement of the season. You see a few of these programs now but not many. Why? I know but you figure it out.

I recall the Christmas season was truly a great time of charity and love and I believe it still is with one exception. The assault from minority section of the population is something we never experienced during the 1960s. Christmas Day is a federal holiday and has been since 1870 when President Ulysses D. Grant made it a legal holiday.

I recall how the expression Merry Christmas was given with no hesitation not too long ago. I also remember how we celebrated the season in our schools with musical assemblies. Christmas decorations including the Nativity scene were seen throughout the city without a complaint. Today it is norm to try to remove a special meaning of the celebration when it offends just a few persons. that over 90% of the U.S. population recognizes. I believe in freedom of religion not freedom from.

Controversy and criticism continues in the present-day, where some Christian and non-Christians have claimed that an affront to Christmas (dubbed a "war on Christmas" by some) is ongoing. In the United States there has been a tendency to replace the greeting Merry Christmas with Happy Holidays. Groups such as the American Civil Liberties Union have initiated court cases to bar the display of images and other material referring to Christmas from public property, including schools. Such groups argue that government-funded displays of Christmas imagery and traditions violate the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which prohibits the establishment by Congress of a national religion. In 1984, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Lynch vs. Donnelly that a Christmas display (which included a Nativity scene) owned and displayed by the city of Pawtucket, Rhode Island did not violate the First Amendment but in November 2009, the Federal appeals court in Philadelphia endorsed a school district's ban on the singing of Christmas carols. What a shame. We sang them in our school as part of the Christmas program. Today due to trying not to offend anybody, the Christmas vacation iss now called Winter Break in the public schools.

In the private sphere also, it has been alleged that any specific mention of the term "Christmas" or its religious aspects was being increasingly censored, avoided, or discouraged by a number of advertisers and retailers. In response, the American Family Association and other groups have organized boycotts of individual retailers. In the United Kingdom there have been some minor controversies, one of the most famous being the temporary promotion of the Christmas period as Winterval by Birmingham City Council in 1998. There were also protests in November 2009 when the city of Dundee promoted its celebrations as the Winter Night Light festival, initially with no specific Christmas references.

The attack has also gone to cable TV on Comedy Central on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart who in most cases has no appeal to the baby boomers. His appeal is for the younger generation who seem to admire him and look at his show as real news. It has become a pitiful situation when he sells what he shovels as news and comedy.

I remember the smiles, the laughter, the wide eyes of amazement from the young children, beautiful decorations and more importantly the real reason we celebrate Christmas, My God help us never to forget what we are celebrating and help us defend the true meaning of Christmas and our right to celebrate it. Merry Christmas to all even to non believers.

Recalling November 1966

I had just graduated from high school in June and still not sure what path to take. I was torn between college, working and the military but in November 1966 I made a road trip to a Kansas college with a friend who wanted to see his girlfriend whom I had graduated with. I did not seek permission from home and my parents reported me missing after a couple of days.

My friend and I stayed in the dorm room of one student we met while there. I immediately got a taste of college life without attending a class at that time of my life. I do recall waiting outside a building for my friend's girlfriend to come out and an attractive girl came by and kissed me passionately and said "Hello Adam, awww, you are not Adam." Shockingly but with a smile I could only say "I can be."

At any rate we made it home through a snow storm with the Ohio Highway Patrol looking for us. On the way home Big Bear Supermarkets called my home and wanted me to start work the next day. Which I began my job a couple of days late as the frozen foods manager. I left JC Penneys for Big Bear Supermarkets for more money. Less than a year later I will be in Vietnam.

November 1966 events were going all around me without notice but I do remember that actor Ronald Reagan was elected Governor of California and the big news was Edward Brooks of Massachusetts becoming the first African-American elected to the Senate since Reconstruction. Being from Ohio the re-trial of the Sam Sheppard case was the big news. He was acquitted this time around. It was also the basis for TV series of "The Fugitive." Similarity was the fact Sam Sheppard's wife, Marilyn had been murdered and he had been convicted the first time in 1954. The second time around he was defended by F. Lee Bailey.

Music was great that month as was the entire year of 1966. Great songs like 96 Tears by ? & The Mysterians, Poor Side of Town with Johnny Rivers, Jimmy Ruffin's What Becomes of the Brokenhearted and Reach Out I'll Be There by The Four Tops just to name a few.

This month on Soundtrack of the 60s on The 60s Official Site, DJ Neal Stevens plays the songs we listened to in November 1966. A great year and a great month of memories.

I Remember October 1968

Looking back to October 1968 the one event that remains etched in my mind is the Detroit Tigers defeating the St Louis Cardinals 4 games to 3 in the World Series. Also the Vietnam war waged on as I was there in Phu Bai, RVN when Armed Forces Radio carried the news that because of progress in the Paris peace talks, President Lyndon B. Johnson announced to the nation that he has ordered a complete cessation of "all air, naval, and artillery bombardment of North Vietnam" effective November 1. Perhaps the war's end was in sight and we could come home and now we know it lasted another 5 years.

The Olympics were being held in Mexico City and black American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raise their arms in a black power salute after winning, respectively, the gold and bronze medals in the Olympic men's 200 meters.

It was a very trying time where violent protests of the Vietnam War were being waged as young men were dying in Vietnam but also there were positive happenings as well. Apollo program: NASA launches Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission (Wally Schirra, Donn Eisele, Walter Cunningham). Mission goals include the first live television broadcast from orbit and testing the lunar module docking maneuver.

The music of the era was beginning to change to a more heavy guitar influenced rock. During October of 1968, the top songs of the month were: Hey Jude by the Beatles, Fire by The Crazy World of Arthur Brown, People Got to be Free by The Rascals, Hush by Deep Purple, Time Has Come Today by the Chamber Brothers and Midnight Confessions by The Grass Roots. Hey Jude was to become the top hit for the entire 60s decade. The song credit to Lennon-McCartney. The song evolved what was suppose to be Hey Jules to comfort Lennon's son during his parents divorce. This classic hit from the Beatles actually was released in August 1968 and remained at #1 for nine weeks. It was the first single recorded on the Beatles' Apple Label.

You can listen to the best of October 1968 by checking out Soundtrack of the 60s. Each month Neal spins the best of the current month and a year from the 60s decade plus your requests and dedications.

August 1963 Rocks as I Remember It

The summer of 1963 was the break between my freshman and sophomore year of high school and much of it remains etched in my memory. The Vietnam issue was beginning to take focus. Although our presence was only minimal as only advisers, the country started to make headlines. At the time I did not know where or what Vietnam was. The country was demonstrating anti-American sentiment and monk Buddhists were committing suicides by burning themselves in protest of Ngo Dinh Diem's government. We know the rest of the story as the years progressed. All of this did not matter to me as I was more interested in my world of Circleville, Ohio. We were a small town but it was the entire world to me and my friends.

I do recall the Kingsmen's song Louie Louie was released and was labeled obscene by many radio stations. The song was not obscene and it leaped up on the charts to the top position because of those rumors. Kids our age just loved to give our parents fits as we made them think it was raunchy. Even if it did contain the lyrics suggested, it would be very tame compared to what the kids listens to today.

As far as televison goes, do you recall the TV show What's My Line on CBS? Hosted by John Charles Daly and with panelists Dorothy Kilgallen, Arlene Francis, and Bennett Cerf, On August 8, the Kingston Trio were the mystery guests. I recall my mother would not miss an episode of that show so since we only had one TV I was forced to watch that show.

Another great event of the month, looking at it in a teenager' prospective, was the release of Alan Sherman's #2 hit Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah. Of course there were other great hits for the month which consisted of Fingertips by Stevie Wonder, My Boyfriend's Back by the Angels, Martha & the Vandellas' hit Heatwave and of course the Tyme's classic So Much in Love.

The most significant historical event was Martin Luther King Jr's I Have a Dream Speech delivered in Washington DC on August 28, 1963 during the civil rights movement. It has been labeled one of the best if not the best oratories of all time.

We remember August 1963 on Soundtrack of the 60s of the 60s Official Site as DJ Neal Stevens plays the hits from that month and delivers the key headlines of that period. Join him to share some of the fun this month as he plays the same songs you listened to in August 1963.

Remembering July 1965

The summer of 1965, July to be specific was a very memorable month not only for music but events that eventually shaped our country. An event that took place back in July 1965 is now causing debate and concerns if it in fact can remain solvent. President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed Medicare into law on July 30, 1965 and which took effect in 1966.

On July 2, 1965 the President ordered an increase in troop level in Vietnam by 125,000 and he raised the montly draft call from 17,000 to 35,000.

On July 27 U.S., the Federal Cigarette Labeling and Advertising Act was signed into law. The law required health warnings on all cigarette packages. The warning had little or no affect initially after the law was signed as cigarette sales continued to skyrocket. At that time they sold for around 25 cents a pack.

I never smoked other than an occasional cigar later in life so my mind was more occupied with girls and the great music of the times. The month of July brought us (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction by the Rollings Stones. This song was number one four of the five chart weeks. Great music, great times and one of the best decades to have grown up.

Other great music right off the Billboard charts for July 1965 was The Four Tops I Can't Help Myself, Back in My Arms Again, by the Supremes, and who can forget The Beach Boys singing Help Me Rhonda? Also on the charts was a song initially recorded in 1960 and withheld from his LP and released in 1965 as a single. It was none other than Elvis Presley's Crying in the Chapel. Some other great memories we tuned our transistor radios to were Wooly Bully, Cara Mia, Mr. Tambourine Man, and Yes, I'm Ready.

Yes summer of 1965 was a great summer with some of the best music ever recorded but then again wasn't the whole decade loaded with great music?
Nonetheless one of the best books about the sixties, Vietnam War, the culture and the events of that period of time.

The author succeeds in bringing to life fictional characters woven into true life events during the turbulent sixties. This story takes us through the battle of Khe Sahn in Vietnam to a Midwestern campus split between hate and support for the war. This story details the undying love between two college students who are so different . The roller coaster ride continues with each page you turn. I could not put the book down and wanted more.

Definitely first rate and highly recommended. A theatrical movie should be made from this book. Thank you Richard for sharing this with me.

The Month is June 1964

School is out and as far as I was concerned summer had already started. I had just finished my sophmore year of high school and summer vacation was here. Baseball, foil ball, wiffle ball, pool time and hanging out with friends were going to lead to a great summer.

How was I to know that the month of June 1964, my favorite radio stations of WCOL of Columbus and WHK of Cleveland would be playing some of the best music of the year? The month kicked off on June 1st when The Rolling Stones arrived in the U.S. for their first American tour. I remember them appearing on Hollywood Palace on June 13 which for that show was hosted by Dean Martin, and my mother saying how unkempt and diry looking the Stones were. They still sounded great to me. Also during the month of June the Beatles released their LP "A Hard Day's Night." A great summer indeed!

The Senate passed the Civil Rights Bill on June 20, 1964 and later that month Jan & Dean released one of my favorites "Little Old Lady from Pasadena".

Watching American Bandstand continued throughout the summer and on June 6th, Brenda Holloway performed "Every Little Bit Hurts." I didn't have my driver's license because I was only 15 and only one friend had his so all us cruised in his 1950 Chevy. Memories galore duirng June 1964.

Neal Stevens of Soundtrack of the 60s for the month of June is playing those great songs of June 1964.

Vibration of the Nation Continues - May 1968

This month I am looking back at the month and year of May 1968. Do you recall what was going on in your life during that month and year? It is very difficult to pinpoint exactly unless there was an event that was very memorable and you stored it away in your memory bank to be recalled whenever you like.

I do recall the music and events that happened during that period. The Vietnam War was at its highest point as more and more Americans disapproved of our involvement as protests continued across the country. On May 10, Vietnam peace talks began in Paris between the U.S. and North Vietnam and we know what that went and the number one song across the nation was Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey." The day following that Richard Harris released a song written by Jim Webb, "McArthur's Park." To me that was a real dumb song but with a nice melody.

On May 14, the Beatles announce formation of Apple Corporation and on May 15 McCartney and Lennon appeared on Johnny Carson's Tonight's Show to promote Apple Records with Joe Garagiola as substitute host. Do your remember that?

May 25, 1968 The Rolling Stones released "Jumpin Jack Flash" and the number one song of the week was "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and The Dwells.

If you are a baseball fan of the San Diego Padres then you will be interested to know that the National League granted San Diego a franchise on May 28.

The music of that month was outstanding as was most of the music of the 60s era. You can listen to the top songs being played on the radio during that month and year at Soundtrack of the 60s for this month only. Neal Stevens, the DJ for The 60s Official Site spins them and gives you his insight on the music and of course the news of that month and year.

That wraps it up for this month, May 1968.

Stepping Back to April 1962

April 1962. Do your remember the year or even better the month and year. I was a freshman in the 8th grade in Circleville, Ohio. I don't recall my homeroom teacher but I do recall some of the teachers that inpired me during the year. My favorite subject was History, (no surprise for anybody who knows me) with Mr. Dole at the reins. I recall he was an expert on The Civil War and I also remember him drawing the campaigns of the Union and Conferedate forces on the blackboard explaining the battle in detail. It's funny of all the things in one's memory bank you recall something like that.

My math teacher was Mrs. Davis and she really made it easy although math came pretty easy for me anyways. When Mrs. Davis passed away a few years ago,her estate consisted of all the high school yearbooks from the time she had been teaching. Mrs. Davis was wonderful teacher who loved her students.

The 8th grade was a time for me to notice the girls more. They began wearing makeup, nylons and perfume. Well maybe I just began noticing it all at that time of my life.

In April 1962 we were gearing up for baseball. Our hero was Mickey Mantle who hit his 375th career homerun.. The New York Mets was the expansion team that year and of course lost their first game. When the season ended they had won only 40 games. Being from Ohio, my personal teams of choice were the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians.
The music of April 1962 looked like this. The number one songs of the month consisted of Bruce Channel's Hey Baby, Shelley Fabares Johnny Angel and of course Elvis singing Good Luck Charm. The month of April 1962 had several cross over country hits as well including PT 109 by Jimmy Dean, Patsy Cline's hit She's Got You and several more. It not only was a memoral month for music but a wonderful beginning as I edged closer to beginning a new adventure in high school.

I recommend you take the time and listen to Soundtrack of the Sixties on The 60s Official Site. as DJ Neal Stevens spins the songs from April 1962.

Looking Back to March 1960

I have been delinquent posting to my blog. I want to apologize. It seems like there is so much on my plate lately.

In March 1960, I was 11 years old and all that mattered to me was playing sports and hanging out with my friends as the music on the radio, that sat on top of the fridge, played the great hits of March 1960 as I ate breakfast before treading off to school.

On March 5, 1960 Elvis Presley was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army and on March 6th the United States increased its role in Vietnam by sending 3,500 troops.

On March 21 Elvis Presley made his first post Army recording with one of his best, "Stuck on You."

Great music captured the month of March 1960. "A Theme from a Summer Place" by Percy Faith remained number one throughout the month of March. It reached #1 on February 22 and remained in the top slot for nine weeks and 17 weeks on the Top 40. Music with the country flavor manged to make the big time as well. Jim Reeves nailed a great song that was kept out of #1 by Percy Faith's hit. Reeves' "He'll Have to Go" peaked at #2 on March 7. Another country great that hit the charts in March was Jack Scott's "What in the World Came Over You."

Overall March was a memorable month in music. To listen to these great songs and others for the month of March go to Soundtrack of the 60s on The 60s Official Site as Neal Stevens plays the great music of the 60s plus your dedications and requests.

Looking Back to November 1965

The month is November 1965 as we look back to the events and music that shaped the decade. I was in my senior year of high school. Where has all the time gone? The top TV shows were Bonanza, Gomer Pyle, USMC, The Lucy Show, The Red Skelton Hour and The Andy Griffith Show. Great television during a great decade!

On November 6, 1965 the Freedom Flights program began which would allow 250,000 Cubans to come to the United States by 1971. On that day the Rolling Stones topped the charts with "Get Off My Cloud" where it remained for two weeks. Behind it at #2 was the Toys big hit "A Lover's Concerto."

A great icon of advertising appeared for the first time on TV on November 7 as the Pillsbury Dough Boy was first seen in TV commercials. Do you remember that?

For you soap opera addicts, "Days of Our Lives" debuted on TV on NBC on November 8, 1965.

November 9, 1965 may be forever in the memory banks of those who lived in the Northeast as the great Northeast blackout occurred across several states and Canada. Those parts of the country were hit with a series of power failures that lasted over 13 hours.

The buildup and news coverage of the Vietnam War continues to grow as ABC radio begins weekly "Vietnam Update" report on November 19, 1965 as the Supremes hit "I Hear a Symphony charts at #1. Also on this date, Kellogg's Pop Tart Pastry is created.

On November 22 Muhammed Ali TKOs Floyd Patterson in 12 rounds to win the heavyweight boxing title.

The Vietnam War protests begin as 15,000 demonstrate against war in Washington D.C. "I Hear a Symphony" was still #1 followed by the Byrds with "Turn, Turn, Turn" at #2.

Join me each month as I recap a month and year from the 60s decade. Also be sure to visit The 60s Official Site which has over 900 pages related to the 60s including jukebox music.

The music you were listening to on your favorite radio show played by your favorite DJ is now being played on Soundtrack of the 60s with Neal Stevens. You can listen to the hits of November of 1965 by clicking here. A great show with insight on the artist and music of that month and year. Beginning this month in celebration of four years on the web, contests with prizes but you must listen to win.

<category scheme="http://www.blogger.com/atom/ns#" term="John F.
I remember watching Roger Maris on a black and white TV hitting his 61st home run of the season against pitcher Tracy Stallard of the Boston Red Sox on October 1st. If you recall Roger Maris was cussed, his life and his family's life threatened as he approached the milestone of breaking Babe Ruth's record. Mickey Mantle was the love the fans and Maris suffered the entire season as he approached breaking the record. The number one song on The Billboard Hot 100 on that day was Bobby Vee's "Take Good Care of My Baby."

Also one of the funniest TV Shows of that era began its debut on CBS on October 3, "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

On October 6, 1961 President John F. Kennedy recommended all families purchase or build a bomb shelter in case of a nuclear exchange between the Soviet Union and the U.S. It was a very scary time we lived in then. I was 12 and probably more interested in playing baseball, football and hanging out with my friends then to understand what was really going on besides I couldn't do anything about it. To my friends and me, it was a great time to be alive and we were so unaware of what was going on in the world as most kids of that age is today.

And the joke of the year (Who is buried in Lenin's Tomb?) ended as Joseph Stalin's body was removed from Lenin's tomb where it was on public display on October 31.

Why do I bring up October 1961 and the headlines and news of the month and year? Every month The 60s Official Site looks back at the current month and a year of the 60s decade on The Soundtrack of the 60s, featuring DJ Neal Stevens where he spins the songs from the Billboard Charts of that month and gives you the insight scoop on the songs, headlines and more. Join in on the fun each month as he spins the great songs of the era and takes your requests and dedications.

Do You Need A Fix?

If you love the great music from the 50s and 60s decade, then there is nothing like starting your day off with a oldies fix or boost. On my site The 60s Official Site, I have added a daily 5-song medley of songs from the 50s and 60s decade to start your day off right. Each day a new 5-song medley is posted for your listening enjoyment. This great music is posted NLT 7:00 AM Easter Time Zone USA. Enjoy and get your feet a tappin' and put a smile on your face as we look back at a more simpler time. Here is the link so you can check it our for yourself : http://www.the60sofficialsite.com/dailyoldiesfix/Daily-Oldies-Fix.html

Listed below are the Top 40 Songs of the 60s decade according to Billboard Magazine. Their results are based on amount of time staying on the charts which of course was based on record sales. These songs do not come close to the list the visitors to the most popular 60s site on the web voted. Some songs listed are on the final countdown but not many. Of course this list is based on time on the charts but time on charts were also an indicator of popularity of a song. Tastes do change as we get older. You can listen to DJ Neal Stevens countdown the Top 40 hits of the sixties decade based on our visitors voting. Go to The 60s Official Site/Top 40 Hits of the 60s decade or Soundtrack of the 60s/Top 40 Hits of the 60s decade.

We lived next door to one another while very young and played together often. His parents, Maxine and Carl (everybody called him Tony) were always great to be around and both of them treated Larry's friends like royalty. Larry was handicapped but you would never know it. Larry never let that hold him back. He played touch football with all of us on Town Street. Larry was one of the toughest guys I ever knew. My friend never allowed adversity or his handicaps interfere with his positive mental attitude. I can also remember he had genuine love for music and cars. In fact in high school he had a band. I am sorry to say I can't remember the name of it but I do remember he could play the drums and he and his band would take me on a gig or two. So much fun back then! Thank you Larry! Larry's parents and he many tmes took me along with them to their vacation home on Lake White Larry's thoughtfulness and his of course his humor was derived from his fun loving parents. It was sad that both of them died in a tragic accident so many years ago.

Larry graduated in 1968 and I graduated in 1966. After I graduated I spent more time with my girlfriends and other buddies and Larry and I saw less and less of each other. Why? I don't know but that happens sometimes. Other relationships starts to overtake the other and then the other becomes a faded photograph.

I eventually entered the United States Army and made it a career while Larry attended Northwestern Medical University in Chicago and then graduated from Cerritos College in California with a degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics. Larry worked with some of the best Orthotic and Prosthetic facilities in the country before starting the family firm of South Central Orthotic and Prosthetics Center in Chillicothe, Ohio. Larry was instrumental in bringing State Licensure in Orthotics and Prosthetics in the State of Ohio. Larry was very successful and loved by all his patients.

I found Larry's sister on Classmates.com and wrote to her several years ago. Kris was about two years older than me. She wrote back and gave me his email address but also his phone number and told me to call not to email because he very seldom checked his email or responded. Well I kept putting off that phone call until it was never made.

In the late 1970s I ran into Larry and his new wife, Denise at the Pumpkin Show. I spent a few minutes talking to him and then went my way with my family. I never saw Larry again.

While home for a funeral in 2002, my cousin, who was a member of the Elks as was Larry, My cousin told Larry I was home and Larry agreed to meet us at the Elks. I don't know what came up but Larry didn't show. Back then I didn't know that I probably had lost my last opportunity to see Larry for the last time. I will say this once again. As we grow older, the friends we make in life later do not compare to the friends we had as children.

Larry, thank you for all the great memories while growing up. I wish all of us could be as tough, fun loving, positive, and generous as you have been to all those you came in contact with, especially me. I pray that you forgive me for not taking that extra time to pick up the phone and say 'hey friend, remember me?"

It is set in Great Britain during the last two years of the decade. The story involves four friends with their own ideals and views of the sixties. Throughout the book earlier years of the decade are recalled through flashbacks which is woven together with actual sixites events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy and his brother Bobby, the assassination of Martin Luther King, the Vietnam War and of course the music of the era.

These four friends love for rock 'n roll and their discussions of the best music ever produced is detailed throughout the setting of the time. Their human emotions, such as sadness, humor and heartbreak makes this book delightful and highly recommened.

Although a fictional book with actual events surrounding the story, my question is which one of these characters is David, the author? I have my suspicion.

Time Gets Better With Age

I wish I can say I wrote this but I did not, but after discovering this little antedote of coming of age, it would fit perfectly on my blog. I hope you enjoy it.

I've learned that I like my teacher because she cries when we sings "Silent Night".
Age 5

I've learned that our dog doesn't want to eat my broccoli either.
Age 7

I've learned that when I wave to people in the country, they stop what they are doing and wave back.
Age 9

I've learned that just when I get my room the way I like it, Mom makes me clean it up again.
Age 12

I've learned that if you want to cheer yourself up, you should try cheering someone else up.
Age 14

I've learned that although it's hard to admit it, I'm secretly glad my parents are strict with me.
Age 15

I've learned that silent company is often more healing than words of advice.
Age 24

I've learned that brushing my child's hair is one of life's great pleasures.
Age 26

I've learned that wherever I go, the world's worst drivers have followed me there.
Age 29

I've learned that if someone says something unkind about me, I must live so that no one will believe it.
Age 30

I've learned that there are people who love you dearly but just don't know how to show it.
Age 42

I've learned that you can make some one's day by simply sending them a little note.
Age 44

I've learned that the greater a person's sense of guilt, the greater his or her need to cast blame on others.
Age 46

I've learned that children and grandparents are natural allies.
Age 47

I've learned that singing "Amazing Grace" can lift my spirits for hours.
Age 49

I've learned that motel mattresses are better on the side away from the phone.
Age 50

I've learned that you can tell a lot about a man by the way he handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights.
Age 51

I've learned that keeping a vegetable garden is worth a medicine cabinet full of pills.
Age 52
I've learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you miss them terribly after they die.
Age 58

I've learned that if you want to do something positive for your children, work to improve your marriage.
Age 61

I've learned that life sometimes gives you a second chance.
Age 62
I've learned that you shouldn't go through life with a catchers mitt on both hands. You need to be able to throw something back.
Age 64

I've learned that if you pursue happiness, it will elude you. But if you focus on your family, the needs of others, your work, meeting new people, and doing the very best you can, happiness will find you.
Age 65

I've learned that whenever I decide something with kindness, I usually make the right decision.
Age 66
I've learned that everyone can use a prayer.
Age 72

I've learned that even when I have pains, I don't have to be one.
Age 82

I've learned that every day you should reach out and touch someone. People love that human touch-holding hands, a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
Age 90

I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

Many months ago, I wrote an article entitled, "Help Solve A 60s Rock Group Mystery" (Who Were The Mustangs), humbly asking for anyones help in providing information about this 1960s instrumental rock group that had a hit single, "The Dartell Stomp" to which I was very fond. Unfortunately, there was not one response. Coupled with no replies was the fact that I had invested some 12-14 hours of research into finding out who this group was, but with no results. I had just about given up hope of ever learning when one day recently, I discovered a clue on YouTube and "the rest is history" as the saying goes. The mystery has been solved while The Mustangs have been rediscovered by '60s instrumental rock music afficionados through the popular website where "The Dartell Stomp" can now be heard once again. But perhaps the biggest news is for the four original members of the band itself. For the past 45 years, The Mustangs had absolutely no idea

how successful their single became, charting to #92 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and in the Top 20 on many rock and roll radio station record surveys from coast to coast. This would all change with the writing of this biography in November 2009. The bandmates, now all in their early sixties, have learned through additional new research just how popular their hit record had been on the national rock scene in 1964. Here is the previously unknown, untold, complex, and intriguing biography of The Mustangs.

The story of The Mustangs begins in 1959 when 12 year old John Beach and schoolmate, Tommy Wright compete in a grammar school talent contest. The boys did not win the contest, but it did provide them with the idea and impetus to form their own band. Beach played guitar and Wright bass. By late 1961, two other 13-year-olds joined Beach and Wright to start a band. Paul Amadio played drums and Jack Fernandez was a keyboardist, playing a Cordovox.

This was the beginning of Sandy and The Beachcombers. The four young teens from New Jersey did surprisingly well, playing 3-4 days a week and earning good money for the time. Then in 1963, a simple change in where the band practiced would lead to the realization of every teenage musicians hope in the 1960s..... signing a professional recording contract. The band always rehearsed at the home of John Beach, but for whatever reason, the group decided this one day to practice in the garage of drummer Paul Amadio, a common place to play during this era. Coincidently, an editor for Billboard Magazine lived just two doors away and heard the band practicing on the warm summer day. He came down and told the boys that they sounded good and asked them if they would be interested in playing a song for a record company in New York City. The editor told them that Providence Records was in need of a group to play "The Dartell Stomp", a song previously recorded on the Bolo Label by a band called The Viceroys. Bolo went out of business and Providence acquired the rights to the song. The boys, who were now all sixteen, jumped at the opportunity and met with the owners of Providence along with their fathers who accompanied them to the big city.

Providence offered them a one year recording contract which was a huge thrill for the teens. Though there was no money involved at the signing, the group was told that they would receive royalties

depending on how many records sold, although no specific sales numbers were ever mentioned. The boys agreed to the contract, however, due to their age, had to have their fathers actually sign the document.

For some unknown reason, there was an urgency by the label for the teens to record "Dartell". The group took three days off from school in late 1963 to practice the song and on day three, record it. Providence decided to use a previously taped instrumental of the boys called "Lazy Love" as the "B Side" despite the objections of the teens who requested that their song "Thunder" be used. "Thunder" started out with a loud thunder-like sound created by tipping over a reverb amplifier, something that scared Providence executives who did not like the loud sound nor the piece.

It would be several months later in March or April of 1964 that "The Dartell Stomp" would officially be released. At the time, the band members all thought this was a "one shot dream" and truly believed the record had no chance of ever becoming a hit. And according to John Beach, "I didn't like the song, personally. There was too much repetition. We tried to get them to do a guitar riff, but to no avail". Interestingly, the record label told the group prior to recording that they would have to record the song under a different name - The Mustangs, not as Sandy and The Beachcombers. It is purely conjecture, but a possible explanation for the name change might have been an attempt to associate the group/record with the introduction of the new Ford Mustang that was first shown at the Watkins Glen Speedway in October 1963, the approximate same time that "The Dartell Stomp" was recorded.

Following this appearance, the Mustang was then seen by thousands at the New York Worlds Fair on April 17, 1964. Some 22,000 Mustangs were sold alone on the first day of sales and one million within the first 24 months of its existence. Amazingly, "The Dartell Stomp" soon thereafter began climbing up the rock and roll Top 40 charts starting in June 1964 and continuing through September.

Was the band name and release date of "The Dartell Stomp" something that was carefully calculated to ride on the extraordinary sales wave of the new Ford model in an attempt to maximize sales, or purely coincidental? This is something that may never be known.

Life for the young men continued on as it had been before recording "Dartell" with no performance changes, but there were two personnel changes in the band. Paul and Jack left the group and were replaced by Jack Hunt on drums and Tom Wilson on the Cordovox. The half new, half original group thought "it would be suicide" to change their name to The Mustangs, in effect having to start over in terms of name recognition. The band continued playing gigs as Sandy and The Beachcombers and consciously made a decision to play 3-4 days a week as before with the financial benefit of this schedule outweighing other alternatives. The band would perform at weddings, parties and other social events while also becoming the House Band at two area restaurants. The group also performed at The Hazlet Fair and soon thereafter teamed up with the amusement company to play for two summers whererever the company was operating throughout New York and New Jersey. All the while, there was no knowledge or realization by the band that "The Dartell Stomp" had made its way onto The Billboard Hot 100 Chart, peaking at #92, and that the instrumental single was a hit throughout many parts of the country. Some examples of the records popularity based on sales are reflected on such major rock and roll radio stations weekly surveys as:

WLS (Chicago): #13 for the week ending August 21

KQV (Pittsburgh): #6 for the week of July 22

WARM (Wilkes-Barre): #20 for the week ending August 21

WKNR (Detroit): #14 for the week of September 17

WXYZ (Detroit): #20 for the week of September 15

WENE (Endicott, NY) #10 for the week ending October 3

KEWB (San Francisco) #39 for the week ending October 30

Sandy and The Beachcombers continued to perform unitl 1970 when they decided to finally call it quits after nine years of performing. Each of the original members of the band went on to have successful careers in various fields. John Beach recently retired from the mortgage industry while Tommy Wright decided to end a long career with IBM. Paul Adadio continues to work in the oil industry and Jack Fernadez remains self-employed as a paving contractor.

INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE MUSTANGS and "THE DARTELL STOMP"

The band wrote, "We would like to thank and acknowledge the three people responsible for bringing The Mustangs back to life, most notably the author, John Timmons, for his tenacity in locating us, his attention to detail, and his patience through the process. To Raymond T. Vinyl, (Play a Record Today) {http://www.youtube.com/user/RaymondTVinyl} for posting "The Dartell" on YouTube after 45 years, and to Michael Wright, Tom's brother, for finding it.
All I had to do was catch a Southwest Airline flight to make my way to Circleville, Ohio to visit the Circleville Pumpkin Show. This year we grew a record size pumpkin of 1,635 pounds.

I hadn't been to the king of all festivals for 7 years and it was great to get back home just in time to see the beautiful foilage and again arouse my sense of smell to the aroma of all the food being prepared at the Pumpkin Show. That was one of the main reasons to make the trip and try to once again rekindle my young at heart spirit and try to recall way back when I didn't have to wear glasses to read or wear hearing aids. As I wondered and looked around everything wasn't the same. Yes the young of heart was there, the little ones were enjoying the rides and the fun as I am sure I did when I was their age. Instead of standing and watching the parades I could sit thanks to my friend Ron bringing chairs to sit on along the parade route. His exact words were "I'm too old to stand." Wow! I am a few months older than he. So I must be too old to stand also.

Before arriving at the downtown festival Ron and I drove over to the old neighborhood where we were part of the hellraisers at that time. All was not the same. Our stomping grounds have deteriorated to the point we were ashamed of how it now looked. Houses that were once the best homes in the neighborhood were some of the worst. The trees that once lined the streets have all been removed now and looked bare. "There's no place like home" did not have much of an impact anymore. I continued to think about the looks of the street where I once lived as we wondered downdtown hoping to catch some old friends and acquaintances. What happend in the last 45 years? Like everything and everybody it just aged. The magic of being home never materialized.

Return to the 60s at The 60s Official Site

Dirt Roads

Throughout my youth, I had traveled many dirt roads and paths. Many were the most pleasant experiences of my life and some well, I would rather like to forget. The problem today with our society is that those dirt roads and paths have disappeared except perhaps in national parks and a few rural areas. I just rediscovered an old article written by the late great Paul Harvey. He describes the old dirt roads like nobody else. Enjoy.

Dirt Roads

By Paul Harvey

People that live at the end of Dirt Roads learn early on that life is a bumpy ride. That it can jar you right down to your teeth, but sometimes its worth it, if at the end is a home....a loving spouse, happy kids and a dog.

We wouldn't have near the trouble with our educational system if our kids got exercise walking a Dirt Road with other kids, with whom they learn to get along. There was less crime before they were paved. Criminals did not walk two dusty miles to rob or rape, if they knew they would by 5 barking dogs and a double barrel shotgun.

There were no drive by shootings. Our values were better when our roads were worse!

People did not worship their cars more than their kids, and motorists were more courteous, they didn't tailgate by riding the bumper or the guy in front would choke you with the dust and bust your windshield with rocks.

Dirt Roads taught patience.

Dirt Roads were environmentally friendly, you didn't hop in your car for a quart of milk you just walked to the barn for your milk. For your mail you walked to your mailbox.

What if it rained and the Dirt Road washed out? That was the best part, then you stayed home and had some family time, roasted marshmallows, and popped popcorn, and road on Daddy's shoulders and learned how to make prettier quilts than anybody.

At the end of Dirt Roads, you soon learned that bad words tasted like soap.

Most paved roads lead to trouble, Dirt Roads more likely lead to a fishing creek or a swimming hole.

At the end of the Dirt Road, the only time we even locked our car was in August, because if we didn't some neighbor would fill it with too much zucchini.

At the end of the Dirt Road, there was always extra springtime income, from when city dudes would get stuck, and you'd have to hitch up a team and pull them out. Usually you got a dollar...always a new friend at the end of The Dirt Road!

Go back to the dirt roads of your youth by visiting The 60s Official Site.

1969, The End of a Decade

Where have the 60s gone? 1969 ended one of the most remarkable decades in history. Many historians agree that the 60s were one of the most innovative, turbulent, and rebellious decade in modern history but a great era to have lived.

At The 60s Official Site we are looking back to the year 1969 all month. During the year 1969, the news headlines were loaded with Vietnam War details including the My Lai massacre. The big story of the year was man setting foot on the moon and of course Woodstock. Also plastered across the front page of most newspapers was the murder of Sharon Tate and six others by Charles Manson and his cult. Protests against the war were seen across the TV screen each and every night as the news anchors covered the war. Yes indeed the year 1969 ended as it started turbulent and rebellious.

The sixties decade produced some of the best music in rock history and the year 1969 was no exception. Artists such as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Paul Revere and the Raiders, The Temptations, were all over the Billboard Charts.

Coming Friday August 21, 2009, a special presentation by DJ Larry Ravenswood who will countdown the top 100 hits of 1969. This countdown can only be heard on The 60s Official Site. Larry will take us from number 100 to number 1 based on the Billboard charts. In fact, you will feel the energy of the year 1969 by listening to this broadcast. DJ Larry Ravenswood will make you believe that 1969 just ended a day or so ago and he is counting down the biggest hits of the previous year. You don't want to miss this so book mark us and check out The 60s Official Site on Friday August 21, 2009 as we review the top 100 hits of 1969.

We bring the 60s back to life.
