At least 73 people have died and hundreds are injured after violent clashes broke out at a football match in Port Said between Cairo club Al-Ahly and local club Al-Masry, government officials said.
The violence flared after Al-Ahly, one of Egypt's most successful teams, were beaten 3-1. Television footage showed players running from the pitch chased by fans while a small group of riot police tried to protect the players, but they appeared overwhelmed and fans attacked the players as they fled. Fans of both teams clashed and stormed the pitch and dressing rooms. The deputy health minister, Hesham Sheiha, called it "the biggest disaster in Egypt's soccer history".
"This is not football. This is a war and people are dying in front of us. There is no movement and no security and no ambulances," Al-Ahly player Mohamed Aboutrika told his club's television channel. "I call for the league to be cancelled. This is a horrible situation and today can never be forgotten."

Originally known as "February In B&W and Color" which was more accurate but lacked the sound of "Blue February". Which was the names of the two photos that were the source for the variations which became the video. Anyway you don't really care about the title and why should you? It looks and sounds pretty cool in the end.

Another in our series of slideshows from vintage Polaroid SX-70 photos. These two pictures were taken in Chicago on one of those foggy February days. The kind of day where it's about 40 (F) and a lot of snow is melting so it gets very foggy.

Then when Grand was preparing the soundscape he came across a reading of "Winter Tale" by David Carter Scott on FreeSoundProject and it fit perfectly in feel and length.

Over a twenty year period from 1975-1995 I took thousands of Polaroid instant pictures. I was interested in photography but back then it was a lot of work to process and develop 35MM pictures. I was lazy and more concerned with what was in the picture than the technical qualities of the camera used so was an easy convert.

As part of a general house cleaning I have been scanning up my old pictures, archiving the images and kind of playing around with them. We have assembled some other slideshows that we've posted here on 1Grand21 and you can visit our Photo Noir gallery on our web portal.

Unione Siciliana, a community and political organization of native Sicilians was a powerful notional social and political organization. It was not a part of the Mafia but a powerful organization that the mob was beholden to in many ways. In Chicago the president of this organization had control over the immigrant cookers that made the alcohol base that bootleg gin was made of. It was a profitable, powerful but very dangerous position. During the roaring 20's a half dozen Union president were killed as the north and south side mobs fought over control of this strategic position.

Antonio Lombardo was a Capone / Torrio ally who had managed to hold his position for almost three years. Before being gunned down in the heart of the Loop at 4 in the afternoon Sept.7 1928, in front of hundreds of witnesses. This short clip traces his last steps. We see him exit his offices in the, long gone, Hartford building at 8 S. Dearborn and head north towards Madison. A plane is being hoisted up the side of the Boston building and the street is filled with people.

Lombardo his partner Joe Ferrara and bodyguard Joe Lolardo turned on Madison and started walking west. They got about fifty feet before they turned to look at the plane once again. Two men came out of a restaurant doorway snuck up and emptied their revolvers into the three men. Lombardo and Ferrara were killed and bodyguard Lolardo miraculously survives.

But it's a Chicago miracle as nobody gets convicted and the next president turns out to be Joe Lolardo's brother. Fancy that?

With this clip we begin our second "season" of Chicago crime history videos. What started as a look at the "outfit" the Mafia crime organization that siezed power in the roaring 20's. Has morphed into a look at darker side of Chicago's history. Chicago is one of the worlds great cities but it's reputation for corruption of all sorts is another part of it's legend. That is what we explore here.

What's Wrong With This CraigsList Ad?

I'm sure there are a lot of you out there who have also come across CL ads that make you just shake your head and make you wonder. Well this is the first in what I hope to be a short series called “What's Wrong With This Carigslist ad?”. I have to spend time each day going through the Craigslist help wanted ads and have always been amazed at the amount of blatant scams and other random insults to ones intelligence posing as job offers there are out there.

When I came across this one I had to share it. You know there's something wrong when you open with “We are a company who has a good reputation, is known and growing in the Chicagoland area.” and then never give the name of the company. You've got to wonder what that reputation really is.

I removed a persons name and the ad number but the company name was never mentioned. Love the quote though, very inspiring. If you have had your intelligence insulted by a Craigslist ad why not share it with us.

Now, Adbusters has issued a Call to Action to Occupy Chicago for the G8/NATO summit this coming May:

When American colonists declared independence from England in 1776, they also freed themselves from control by English corporations that extracted their wealth and dominated trade. After fighting a revolution to end this exploitation, our country's founders retained a healthy fear of corporate power and wisely limited corporations exclusively to a business role. Corporations were forbidden from attempting to influence elections, public policy, and other realms of civic society.
"Initially, the privilege of incorporation was granted selectively to enable activities that benefited the public, such as construction of roads or canals. Enabling shareholders to profit was seen as a means to that end"......................
......."For 100 years after the American Revolution, legislators maintained tight controll of the corporate chartering process. Because of widespread public opposition, early legislators granted very few corporate charters, and only after debate. Citizens governed corporations by detailing operating conditions not just in charters but also in state constitutions and state laws. The corporate barbarians are through the gate of American democracy. Not satisfied with their all-pervasive influence on our culture, economy and legislative processes, they want more. They want it all.
Two years ago, the United States supreme court betrayed our Constitution and those who fought to ensure that its protections are enjoyed equally by all persons regardless of religion, race or gender by engaging in an unabashed power-grab on behalf of corporate America. In its now infamous decision in the Citizens United case, five justices declared that corporations must be treated as if they are actual people under the Constitution when it comes to spending money to influence our elections, allowing them for the first time to draw on the corporate checkbook - in any amount and at any time - to run ads explicitly for or against specific candidates.
What's next ... a corporate right to vote?
Don't laugh. Just this month, the Republican National Committee filed an amicus brief in a US appeals court contending that the natural extension of the Citizens United rationale is that the century-old ban on corporate contributions directly to candidates and political parties is similarly unconstitutional. They want corporations to be able to sponsor candidates and parties directly while claiming with a straight face this would not result in any sort of corruption. And while, this month, they take no issue with corporations being subject to the existing contribution limits, anyone paying attention knows that eliminating such caps will be corporate America's next prize in its brazen ambition for absolute control over our elections.

WASHINGTON — Two legal rights groups on Thursday asked the United Nations to investigate allegations that Spanish and U.S. officials collaborated to quash criminal probes into whether the Bush administration authorized illegal killings and torture of terrorism suspects.
The request, made to the U.N.'s special rapporteur for judicial independence, accused the United States of interfering with Spain's justice system in three different criminal cases. The New York-based Center for Constitutional Rights and the Berlin-based European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights asked that the U.N. demand that both governments refrain from meddling in court cases.
"When arguably the leading human rights country in the world is engaged in torture and then gives impunity to those torturers, it sends a pretty bad message," said Michael Ratner, the Center for Constitutional Rights' president emeritus.

(Reuters) - Gun and bomb attacks by Islamist insurgents in the northern Nigerian city of Kano last week killed at least 178 people, a hospital doctor said on Sunday, underscoring the challenge President Goodluck Jonathan faces to prevent his country sliding further into chaos.
A coordinated series of bomb blasts and shooting sprees mostly targeting police stations Friday sent panicked residents of Nigeria's second biggest city of more than 10 million people running for cover.
The scale of the carnage makes this by far the deadliest strike claimed by Boko Haram, a shadowy Islamist sect that started out as a clerical movement opposed to western education but has become the biggest security menace facing Africa's top oil producer.

WOMEN'S JINGLE DRESS

This dance has its origins in northern Minnesota and was introduced to the Pan-Indian community by the Ojibwe people. As the story goes, a medicine man's granddaughter was very ill. He had a dream in which a spirit wearing the jingle dress came to him and told him to make one of these dresses and put it on his daughter to cure her. When he awoke, he and his wife proceeded to assemble the dress as described by the spirit of his dream. When finished, they and others brought his granddaughter to the dance ha ll and she put on the dress. During the first circle around the room, she needed to be carried. During the second circle around the room, she could barely walk and needed the assistance of several women. The third circle around the room she found she coul d walk without assistance and during the fourth circle around the room, she danced. The jingle dress is made of a cloth, velvet or leather base adorned with jingles made out of a shiny metal. Traditionally and still common today, the jingles are made from the lids of snuff cans. These are bent and molded into triangular bell shapes and attached to the dress with ribbon or fabric in a pattern designed by the dancer. It takes between 400 and 700 jingles to make an adult jingle dress.

The dance itself is designed to incorporate the sound of the jingles by allowing them to move; that is, to make them jingle, or be made "happy." The steps are controlled and do not invlove high kicking or twirls. Often the steps are in a zigzag pattern t o reflect the zigzagging involved in the journey of life. Similar to Men's Grass dancing, the feet often do parallel movements. Similar to a Women's Traditional dancer, the Jingle Dress dancer also raises her fan when the "honor beats" are played on the d rum. As in all dances, the Jingle Dress dancer must stay in time with the drum beat and stop with both feet on the ground on the final beat.

Taliban peace talks 'at risk' as Obama stalls on Guantánamo

The Obama administration is in danger of missing an historic opportunity for a peace settlement in Afghanistan if it does not act quickly to release prisoners in response to a Taliban offer to open talks, European officials and observers claim.
The Taliban announced on 3 January that it had agreed to open a political office in Qatar for the purpose of holding peace talks with the international community, and said it expected the release of its officials being held at Guantánamo Bay. At the time, White House officials said the administration was considering the transfer of five Taliban officials to custody in another country, widely believed to be Qatar.
But with still no movement on the prisoner transfers European officials involved in the talks are urging Washington to act quickly to keep the momentum going towards talks before hardline spoilers on all sides can stall proceedings.

Earlier that same week, the Lawrence Journal-World was sent another email that O’Neal had forwarded to House Republicans that referred to President Obama and a Bible verse that says “Let his days be few” and calls for his children to be without a father and his wife to be widowed. Nick Sementelli at Faith in Public Life notes that Psalm 109, which is a prayer for the death of a leader, became a popular conservative meme after Obama’s election. The “tongue-in-cheek” prayer for the president was seen on bumper stickers. The relevant part of the psalm reads:

Let his days be few; and let another take his office
May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow.
May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes.
May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor.
May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children. "

Emanuel's administration also announced Thursday that it would scale back proposed ordinances to tighten the rules for all future public demonstrations in Chicago, including a large boost in fines for violations. The mayor's office wanted to increase the current minimum of $50 for violating the parade ordinance to a $1,000. On Thursday it scaled the proposed minimum back to $200.

The mayor had proposed shortening demonstrations by 15 minutes, to two hours total, but dropped that request. The city also eliminated the proposed requirement that demonstrators supply a parade marshal for every 100 participants.

If aldermen approve the other changes, public parks and beaches would be closed until 6 a.m., two hours later than now. Loud noise, amplified sound and music at parades and public assemblies would be allowed only between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
