Even though this laptop is titled with Aspire, it is actually the Aspire TimelineX series. The Timeline is a business end line with better portability, battery and features.

The battery is the biggest deal in this model. It comes with a 9 cell battery that extends out to the bottom of the laptop. While this may not be the perfectly traveling shape, it does offer a better keyboard angle

Most of the Timeline(older generation) and TimelineX only offers the intel graphics option. However, this model comes with both intel and a beefy ATi Radeon HD5650 packaged as “Hybrid graphics”. By using the intel, you get a solid 7-8 hours battery and pushable to 12 at extreme light use. The ATi does offer about 4 times more graphics power for gaming but it sucks away the battery like water for a 4-5 hours of light use and 2 hours in 3D intensive games.

Even a great battery life, it packs the following specs:

Intel Core i5 460M (2.53GHz up to 2.8GHz turbo)
ATi Mobility Radeon HD5650 1GB DDR3 (frequency: 550MHz core, 800MHz Memory)
4GB DDR3
640GB 5400RPM Western Digital drive
DVD Super Multi DL drive(no bluray)
Broadcom 802.11n (b/g/n support)
Bluetooth 3.0

The physical appearance is very clean and discreet. A solid black brushed aluminum finish with a pushed out textured and polished acer logo provides a professional feel. The profile is extremely thin(without the 9cell of course) under 1 inch. 5.4lbs with a 6 cell, and probably just under 6lbs with 9 cell still superior to my old 5920 6.6lbs!

the left side has a ventilation air exhaust followed by a VGA, HDMI, RJ45 Gigabit, USB 2.0, audio input, speaker headphone out that should be dubbed with S/PDIF aswell.

On the left front, there is a 4 in 1 multi card reader, the image above shows a after market MicroSD to SD adaptor so I can have one extra compatibility on the go.

The air intake right below the touchpad keeps it nice and cool even during a heavy use

On the right we have a power jack, DVD ROM without an eject button and 3 USB 2.0 ports, I would wish for a better location as if a heavy use of USB cables and devices, they will get in the way if you are using a mouse.

There is nothing at the back other than the huge 9 cell battery.

The screen is extremely bright, LED back lighting lits up the screen instantly without a warm up time like older generation of LCD does. The screen has a crisp 1366×768, an aspect ratio of 16:9 (I prefer 16:10 as it is closer to 1.618…) that makes the movie viewing experiences much more pleasant as no screen space is lost to black bars on HD contents. while the 768 pixel hight is not exactly enough for some taller apps or in some cases, 3D mark vantage benchmark.

The video card is a HD5650 that sits nicely at 550MHz/800MHz core/memory 3D profile clock speed, a little push to 700/1100 makes a jump from 7640 to 9499 where as the intel graphics only scores 1385 in 3D Mark 06 tests

The processor is a nice i5 that runs up to 2.8GHz, while it is not a 1.6GHz i7, most current applications can still take advantage of single thread at 2.8GHz if it is a single threaded application. While a multi threaded application can still the on 4 threads at both cores. This makes the CPU a great budget and a good performer

The 4GB DDR3 can be upgraded to 8GB max. Not the most packed but good enough for your Windows 7 64 bit and your office applications and the games that will run on the HD5650

Hard drive packed with this notebook is somewhat disappointing. 640GB is a great capacity but only a single partition on stock. where as most other acer laptops comes with 2 partitions instead. This drive makes a noisy and worrying clicking noise on typical use, no matter what stress the hard drive is under, it makes the clicks. A small help from QuietHDD app can fix this issue due to some AAM and APM settings on the hard drive itself.

The keyboard is a nice full keyboard with the new Acer’s keyboard design(water lily). Big room between keys to allow easy cleaning. The numeric keypad is what I have always been missing from my old 5920G. above the top right of the keyboard are 2 keys, one is a Acer power management only available when unplugged(providing extended battery use) and the other for DVD ROM ejecting as there are no buttons on the DVD ROM itself. The DVD will be powered down if the Acer power management is engaged and will be powered up again if the eject button is pressed once, and next press will then eject the drive.

While the speakers are not as “Home Theater” as it claims, it does provide a better virtual surroundsound effect over the older 5920G. without the Subwoofer, the quality of music is not exactly the most enjoyable clarity like the 5920G, maximum volume is not on par with it either. However, it is bearable for most situations.

Touchpad is a multi touch touchpad with 2 finger scrolling and pinch zoom, the bottom 2 keys are fused together. Pressing left will give you a left click, and right will result right click, might require some getting used to. For those big on touchpad, the default driver DOES disable the touchpad for a good second if any keyboard keys are pressed. This is to prevent accidental clicking with your palm. This is not an option unless you use other drivers that does not offer this feature, it can be rather frustrating if you rely on the touchpad most of the time. This will make you wait for the touchpad to become responsive all the time. (gaming with this driver is impossible with a touchpad)

The webcam is a 1.3MP camera (up to 1280×1024) but the framerate is not as good as the 5920G’s 0.3MP at the same 640X480 setting. Even at 640×480, it will appear choppy unless under an extremely well lit environment.

Pros:
+Great battery life
+Good performance for it’s size
+Light
+Nice looking external design and very sturdy build

Cons:
-Typical laptop speakers
-Higher screen resolution at least 1440×900
-Most ports are on the right side.
-Big battery

Overall: 8.5/10

On the front, there is the multi-card reader for conveniences, this image also compares the machine to my beefy 5920G. In the center, there is an amber light that indicated the charging status, amber means charging, blue means 100% full.

on to the left side(from left to right order), there is a USB 2.0 port, the ventilation exhaust, VGA 15pin, HDMI (THAT’S RIGHT!), another USB 2.0 (beats macbook air’s number of USB already eh?), Pink microphone jack (3.5mm), black headphone jack (3.5mm)

to the right side(left to right), we have the DVD ROM(which is opened only by pressing the button by the speaker so you don’t accidentally pop it open every now and then), USB 2.0(woh! wait another one! YES!), RJ45 Ethernet port, AC power jack, and the Kensington lock port. Sorry no dial up!

Bottom of the laptop, black meshed surface, pretty standard from all Acer laptops. Note, the bottom does not get hot at all! (didn’t try it on a bed though).

Inside!

Here is the power button on the left corner of the keyboard, right to the right is the left speaker.

The touchpad is nice and big with a nice simple touchpad toggling button on the top left to the touchpad itself with a light indicator of on or off. the location of the touchpad being in the center but aligned to the left of the space bar like most of the laptops makes this easier for either left or right handed mouse users (for reference, check Aspire 5920G’s touchpad, it is aligned to the left of the space bar but centered)

Here we have a couple of light indicators, some of them are actually touch buttons. From the left, we have the wifi (tapping it will toggle the wifi, when it is lit, means it is on), the Acer backup button(only works if you have the eRecovery setup properly), then we have the interesting power saving button(I will talk more about later), the harddrive icon (surprising, the icon does not lit up but the LED next to it), the left speakers and the DVD-ROM eject button.

Comparing to the 5534 I have reviewed before, the media keys are not on the function keys on the top, they are designed like the 5920 series which I find much easier to reach to.

Facts about the laptop:

The power saving button never showed any difference according to the Windows battery time left calculation, it merely deems the brightness slightly and change some of the windows power settings. a green light does light up when you tap it, and tapping it again reverts to the previous power settings.

When opening browsers, this happens fairly fast, even though this was a lower end model, I don’t see anything that would affect the overall speed as this is only for office and on the go use

The laptop is ultra light, thin and easy to carry, recommended to all business and students who carries a laptop everyday and all day long.

My rating for this product: 8.5/10

Pros:
•	Light, thin!
•	Awesome battery life, too long for me to benchmark it, that is how long! (other sources benched it to be around 9 hours with light web surfing)
•	Great screen brightness
•	Keyboard function keys for the media keys
•	3 USB ports vs 1 for macbook air! (sounds like a personal jab, that… – MW)
•	HDMI out, connect to your HDTV to watch DVD’s or Bluray disks (if you upgrade to Bluray drive, it will be able to play it)

Cons:
•	Intel 4500MHD for graphics, not good for gaming, but what do you expect? otherwise, get the hybrid version with ATi HD4330
•	Resolution at 1366×768 is really unpopular, slightly lower at 1280×720 is more understandable or push it up to 1680×1050 at least.
•	the battery bumps out of the bottom of the laptop
•	low powered speakers (Aspire 5920 is still superior in all laptop speakers that I have seen, even better than macbook pros)

Manufacture: Acer

I’ve stolen this piece so don’t yell at me. I thought it was so well written it deserved to be published here too but again, it’s not mine.

Great article guys!

I have been fortunate enough to have had an Acer neoTouch P300 for the last few days so I thought I would give you a bit of feedback on my experience. I am not going to write an extensive review – I will leave that for the seasoned pro’s but the intent was to give you my honest opinion in the short time I have used it.

First things first, the unit I have been using is a final production model (although it came in a white box and not the final packaging), so my thoughts are based on the final unit and not a pre-production model.

I have previously thought Acer despite their efforts has lacked something in their smartphones; normally the quality has been a little lapse. I am a bit picky and can be hard to please, but the Acer neoTouch P300 bucks the trend. It feels solid and is made of much better quality materials than previous models.

The P300 does run Windows Mobile 6.5.3 which has been covered extensively on the internet so I won’t go into this, but I honestly thought that it was easy to use and certainly improved the user experience.

The 3.2 inch touch screen was responsive and at no point did I experience any lag in operations – which was very pleasing. Everything just seemed to work well.

Being a user of the HTC Snap, the keyboard is a big thing for me and the Acer did not disappoint. The keys themselves have glossy, smooth finish, but are raised which allows for tactile feedback when typing. Only a 4 line keyboard a 5th numeric key line would be nice, but to be honest this was not a big issue for me and to be honest, it would probably impact on the overall size of the device which despite its features is fairly compact and is smaller than the likes of the HTC Touch Pro2 and Samsung Omnia B7610.

The annoyance for me was that the spacebar, it is a bit small and positioned left of centre on the keyboard and for me it wasn’t very natural to type with the spacebar in this position. I have a tendency to use my right thumb for this and whilst it was possible it wasn’t comfortable. I soon got used to using my left thumb instead but this was the biggest niggle or me.

Of course you can use the on screen keyboard if you like or prefer this input method.

The keyboard also has a backlight which is a bonus in poor lighting conditions or at night. When you wish to access the secondary functions of each key (numbers and punctuation marks and symbols) you need to press the function key which is the same as you would on any similar device, but a great feature was that the keyboard had an LED notification light that came on when you have the function key activated. Some may not like this but for me it was a nice bonus.

On the sides of the device, there was a dedicated camera button – not many smartphones have this now – usually its all through the touch screen, which was why it was refreshing to see this button. The camera quality was ok too. Nothing spectacular, it is only 3.2 megapixel camera, adequate, but if photos are your thing, then this isn’t the device to go for.

MicroSD expansion slot, a necessity nowadays but how often is it now under the battery or you have to remove the battery cover to access it?! Not on the Acer neoTouch P300. Just unclip one port cover and you are presented with the MicroUSB connection for charging and the MicroSD slot – simply genius – it is small things like this that can make the difference – no messing about removing back covers, just a simple cover and out pops the memory card.

Also on the P300 is a 3.5mm audio jack, so you can listen to music through your preferred headphones, having said this the speaker quality on the device itself wasn’t bad.

Not a lot to say on the call front, all worked perfectly, audible and clear – I had no issue with this.

The neoTouch P300 also has a stylus included, although I didn’t have to use it much, the touch screen and menus worked well enough. The other bonus is here that the stylus is not telescopic, it’s a proper, usable stylus.

On the unit I had the stylus sat a little too deep in the stylus silo for me, making it a bit difficult to remove (unless you have long nails) but to be honest I am being very picky here and it could be that when it goes into full production this (if it is a problem) is resolved.

I haven’t been able to extensively test battery life, but it seemed reasonable and as I would expect. The capacity is a bit smaller than I would like at 1010mAh, but enough to get you through the day.

All in all the Acer neoTouch P300 really exceeded my expectations. You might say that I would say that as Clove Technology sell the devices. You are right I could, but we pride ourselves on being honest and as users of smartphones ourselves we are all too aware of what makes a good smartphone.

I take my hat off to Acer, they have done an exceptional job. A great form factor, great performance, a solid design and exceptionally priced at £269 + VAT.

In summary:

+ Size and weight

+ Full stylus – not telescopic

+ Volume rocker

+ Dedicated camera button

+ Backlight keyboard

+ MicroSD slot on exterior of the device

- Size and positioning of spacebar

- Battery capacity

- Fit of stylus into silo

The idea is to get the Reviews section of the new site off to a flying start with reviews of Acer hardware, useful accessories and great games. Right now, as many of you know, there’s a technical problem that’s preventing me from getting hardware over to (and back from) the US, where the majority of my reviewer volunteers are located. But the other two sections are outside this red tape so here’s what I had in mind to start off with.

1.	First we form a list of reviewers (max 5 but I’m feeling a little generous right now).
2.	We publish a wish-list of games you want to try.
3.	I buy them for you and mail them to your home address
4.	You do a full review complete with analysis, images (screenshots) and if possible videos and mail them to me
5.	I publish the reviews
6.	You keep the games

There is a deliberate goal to this as well as method and I want to make it clear right from the start:

Game reviews along with hardware and accessory reviews will increase traffic to this site. My goal here is to raise awareness of the site for all aspects of computing with Acer products in order to maximize the efficiency, reach and returns on the charity Causes I’m about to launch. Remember: more awareness = more traffic = more revenue.

The other element I’m keen to stress is that there will be affiliate links selling these games I’m offering to you and I will receive a commission on any sales. That money will help finance this site (hosting and update fees) but very little else.

My original idea (which I’m still open to discuss) was to split the proceeds 50:50 but in reality it’s probably not worth it for the reviewers plus I’d want the games back .

This way I think we all stand to gain.

Whaddya say?

This is just a quick post to tell you about something incredible.

I know I shouldn't sound surprised when Acer does something good but this time they've really excelled themselves and I am simply shocked at the degree by which they've gone beyond my expectations.

Let's put things into perspective before I go any further: I own an iPhone 3G. I love it and it has revolutionized the way I discover, access and share information no matter where I am. It's also introduced me to a bunch of non-Windows stuff that really is a lot simpler to live with than you're led to believe.

The iPhone makes you think hard about the way you've had to deal for technology as it glides seamlessly between one amazing app and the next. It's so slick you begin to think that maybe, just maybe, they're actually on to something here.

So it's a paradigm shift more than a phone. Before the iPhone, I text-messaged. Now I Shazam, Tweet, buy on eBay, check out the weather to see whether or not it's snowing before leaving for the mountains and have discovered that Google Maps is like a real life search engine / Yellow Pages hybrid that finds actual businesses, shops and restaurants around you. And let's not forget iTunes...

That's some benchmark and so far every other smartphone I've seen my friends with has never matched it for features and functionality.

But the Acer Liquid does. And then some.

I’m going to go on record here by saying that the Acer Liquid is more than a valid alternative to the iPhone.
And even if there’s no iTunes alternative (yet), all I have to do is drag and drop my music files (including those bought on iTunes – unless protected, damn you DRM!) into the Acer Liquidd’s 2GB microSD folder via USB and I’m good to go.

To find fault with the Acer Liquid you really have to dig deep and most of them come down to lack of applications, therefore no fault of the device itself. Simplify Media should hurry up and get out an Android version of their absolutely brilliant software for this, there should be a better way of buying music on the device and I can’t find a good Flickr app. That’s really about it.

Plusses include brilliant Google synchronization and a total indifference to the computer you have at home. Windows or Mac, it doesn’t care which makes it the most diplomatically correct device Acer has ever made.

I like it so much I’m going to keep it. I’ve ordered a 16GB microSD card from eBay and if my daughter hadn’t intervened, that’s where my iPhone would have ended up, it’s that good. It gets my highest recommendation and I completely and utterly believe you should buy one which is why all the links here point straight to Amazon.

Video review coming…

Many years ago, I learned that our own limits were like walls surrounding us. They gave us a sense of security, dimension and perspective; they allowed us to get to know everything about the world inside because at the same time they protected us from the world outside. I also learned that people are afraid of breaking down those walls and overcoming their limits, as they’re frightened of losing the sanctuary that limits offer. So if happiness awaits those who overcome their limits, we’re actually taught to fear happiness.

Balls I say. I don’t know about you but I’m all for happiness…

The story goes that we’re supposed to be averse to change; that stability and progressive evolution give us certainty and advancement. Change upsets the delicate equilibrium of predictability and scares the bejesus out of us.

Businesses don’t like change as it disrupts their carefully-studied plans for world domination. Customers don’t like change as they fear they’re financing an risky experiment. After all, who wants to be left with a lemon when everybody’s eating bananas? Emm, right…

So basically, the story says that if you change something it’s not as good as it was.

The Acer D250 Netbook I’ve been playing with for the past few days is testament to change. Make no mistake, the Acer D250 shows an Android-shaped finger to those who want us to believe that there is only one way things get done.

Acer tried it before when they fitted the first versions of the Aspire One with a modified Linux Operating System. That didn’t work because despite what the geeks may think, Linux ain’t easy and let’s face it, Acer didn’t really believe in it enough to go through with it.

The Acer D250 though, is Acer’s second shot at showing the world that there is another path and this time I think it could be in with a chance of reaching critical mass, if Acer pushes it harder and supports it better than the last time.

The key here is the fact that it’s a dual boot machine. You can run either Windows7 or Android depending on what you have to do. All you have to do is set up your Google Gmail account and tell the D250 how you want it to start. End of story…? Not quite.

Most of the complaints I’ve seen on this site with netbooks is that people want to set them up like their laptops. Fail!

IT 101: A laptop is a miniaturized desktop PC. A netbook is not a miniaturized laptop. It’s a portable web interface that can be made to work like a mini notebook.

Of course many people will feel uncomfortable with that definition as they are the first to refuse change by replicating their laptops on their netbooks but trust me, it’s completely unnecessary. I took my 1st generation Linux-based Aspire One to London during last year’s global kick off. I blogged live, uploaded photos to my Flickr account, checked my mail and also spoke to my family during the evening via Skype. And it worked flawlessly. At no point that entire conference did I feel I was missing something as everything I had to do I could do online.

Here comes the change: If a netbook is designed primarily to work well on the web, just how necessary is it to have an all singing and dancing operating system or office suite installed on it?

Back to the Acer D250. It has Android which, apart from an offline office suite does everything my 1st gen did but even quicker and on a bigger screen. Plus if I’m online, I can always fire up Google docs and work there.

Feeling uneasy with the new OS? Then click on the top left of the screen and in a few seconds you’ll be whisked away to the wonderful world of Windows7. Starter. Ouch!

Windows Starter lets you know you’re on the bottom wrung of the ladder as it tries to upsell you on every occasion and, let’s face it, it’s pretty bland. So you click on Windows Anytime Upgrade and you find that the top-of-the line Windows 7 Ultimate package, which should run smoothly on this baby, costs €205.

While you’re browsing that, McAfee asks you for €49.99 to activate your antivirus for one year and you suddenly wonder how you’re going to load Office as there is no DVD drive. No problem there’s a button for that too and as you probably want to use this for work too, you need Office Small Business as it has PowerPoint and you discover that this version costs €546,25 (€606,05 for Professional).

So when I try to replicate my laptop on the €299 Acer D250 Netbook thinking I’ve made the discovery of the century, I end up with something that costs over €1,000 which gives me no real advantage over the laptop I’m probably trying to replicate in the first place, or perhaps more relevantly the 11.6″ Acer Aspire AS1410 notebook that forces me to so the whole Windows thing and still offers 6 Hour Battery Life…

Put that against nothing for Android and nothing for Google Docs and the appeal of the Acer D250 becomes obvious.

OK, I’m the first to accept that Android isn’t as plug and play as I’d like and I hate the way the Android marketplace is basically for smartphones but I’m sure the Aspire D250 will be remembered. At least it wasn’t afraid of change…

Here’s an interesting test I’ve never seen done and had to have explained before I got it.

The video is called “HTC HD2 Vs Acer neoTouch – Coreplayer BENCHMARK” and reading the comments, it appears that “Both the devices are extremely fast in rendering videos. Acer is a little bit faster.”

So now you know…

OK guys, trust me.

This is the phone you’ve been waiting for. For those of you disappointed with the neoTouch, Acer is about to launch the perfect solution.

We went through dozens of names before senior management gave us the OK for Liquid which we all really like. If any of you are curious as to why it’s called Liquid well the idea is that the Android Donut operating system is so smooth to use, it’s like running your finger across a liquid surface…

Anyway, I’ll be writing much more for you guys about this product once I’ve got the marketing material approved for Acer.

Here’s what StuffTV thinks:

“Acer announced this good looking Android 1.6 toting handset complete with a 768MHz Snapdragon processor and although it’s a pre-production model, which is why we couldn’t show you much, we did manage to get a bit of hands on time with it.”

In one of the most recent product presentations (AIO), I remember the product manager saying that one of the biggest complaints about Vista was that it was so damned power hungry.

And that is supposed to be one of the biggest improvements of Windows 7 – the fact that it needs a fraction of the resources to run. I’m looking forward to seeing whether that’s true or not in the real world.

Acer, along with all the other PC vendors, has a Windows® 7 Upgrade Offer for customers who purchased a qualifying Windows Vista®-based PC from June 26, 2009 to January 31, 2010.

But extolling the virtues of this latest edition is not what I want to do here – what I want to hear is your opinions and stories.

I’m sure Morris and the other Experts will have something fascinating to write and things will eventually turn up in the forum but I wanted to give it a little more exposure, as it’s something that’s going to affect us all.

Let us know how you get on with the upgrade, whether you can see an improvement and, most important of all, whether you would recommend others take the plunge.

Hello everyone, it’s been a while since I reviewed or wrote an article for you guys, but I’ve been asked to introduce the future of easy LAN connection – Bravura Easy Computer Sync™.

This product allows you to transfer files directly from one PC to another using USB specification, in other words, you can now easily and quickly sync the files of 2 PCs.

The kit contains a specially designed USB cable that allows direct connection between 2 PCs made by Bravura, simple to use, fast and best of all, it is so easy!

When this cable was connected, my Windows 7 directly installed the driver without a glitch, as on the cable, it states: “for Vista” tells us that it will work for the “beloved” Vista (not!).

With the lightweight software (installation just 8.62MB) quickly installed, it guided me straight to the synchronization settings page in almost in a heartbeat.

The software instantly listed the common locations that most users use on their computer, but there is still an “Add Folder” option for advanced users to transfer files not just from that location!

This is a very simple tool for many netbook users, I do have some features I’d like to see such as a background service which will transfer the files automatically without the prompts and have a feature that lets the CD-ROM (DVD…etc) appear to the subcomputer as a typical USB CD-ROM so that you could use it to install operating systems without the hassle of getting a pricey CD-ROM enclosure or figuring out how to install them from a bigger flash drive. I’d also like to see the possibility of detecting the device as a simply USB Removable disk so I can drag and drop the files from Windows Explorer.

All in all a pretty good product. Recommended!

My rating for the product: 7/10

Pros:
•	Fast USB transfer speed (appears to be Full USB 2.0)
•	Easy to use
•	Light HDD space requirement
Cons:
•	No Windows Explorer drag and drop
•	No support for emulating the CD-ROM as a typical USB CD-ROM
