This quick tutorial breaks the drawing into six simple steps, so kids can build the eagle a little at a time. These easy steps – great for beginners, classroom art activities, homeschool lessons, or anyone who wants to practice drawing a bird of prey without getting overwhelmed by too many details. Follow each step below or scroll to the bottom of this post for a free printable. 

Grab a pencil, eraser, black marker, and some crayons or colored pencils, and use the picture above as your guide.

Step 1: Draw the Bald Eagle Head

Start with the bald eagle head near the upper portion of your paper. Begin by drawing the large hooked beak. The top of the beak should curve downward into a point, while the lower portion can be made with another smaller curved line.

Continue drawing around the top and back of the eagle’s head. Add several short lines or pointed curves at the back to represent the fluffy feathers around its neck.

Bring the line underneath the head to complete the basic shape. Don’t worry about making everything perfectly symmetrical. A few uneven feather shapes will give your eagle more personality.

Step 2: Begin the Eagle’s Body and Legs

Next, start forming the eagle’s body underneath the head. Draw a curved long line beginning below the neck and extending downward to create the chest.

Then add two legs near the bottom of the body. Keep them fairly simple at this stage. You can use slightly curved lines and small jagged shapes at the bottom where the feathers meet the feet.

Bald eagles are large birds, but for this cartoon drawing, you can exaggerate the head and keep the body rounded to make the eagle look friendly and approachable.

Step 3: Add the Wings and Tail Feathers

Now draw the eagle’s large wing. Start near the shoulder and use a long curved line that travels down the side of the body. Bring the wing to a point near the bottom.

Add a few small points or curves along the lower edge to suggest individual feathers.

Behind the wing, draw the tail feathers extending from the bottom of the body. You can use several curved or pointed sections to create a layered feather appearance.

At this stage, the basic eagle shape should be easy to recognize.

Step 4: Draw the Feet

Next, complete the legs by adding the eagle’s feet. Draw several curved toes extending outward from each leg.

Eagles have powerful feet and sharp talons that help them catch and carry prey. Since this is a simple cartoon version, you don’t need to add complicated details. A few curved lines for the toes work perfectly.

This is also a good time to erase any overlapping guidelines you no longer need.

Step 5: Add the Eye and Feather Details

Draw a small oval on the eagle’s face for the eye. You can fill it in later with black.

Next, add decorative feather markings to the wing. Use a few groups of short lines or little zigzag shapes to suggest layers of feathers.

You can also add a couple of lines to the tail feathers to give them more definition.

Your eagle is now ready for color!

Step 6: Color Your Bald Eagle

Color the eagle’s wings and body brown while leaving the head and tail a light cream or white. Make the beak and feet yellow or orange, and fill the small oval eye with black.

Bald eagles are native to North America and are famous for their distinctive white heads and tails. Although the bald eagle was once listed as an endangered species in parts of the United States, conservation efforts helped its population recover significantly.

This majestic bird is a wonderful animal to include in nature studies, patriotic activities, bird units, or simple drawing lessons.

By following these simple steps, kids can create their own recognizable bald eagle without needing advanced art skills. This quick tutorial also provides a great way to practice curved lines, a long line, feather shapes, and basic animal proportions.

Once your first bird of prey is complete, try drawing another eagle flying through the sky, sitting in a nest, or perched on a tree branch. Each drawing is a chance to practice and add even more details!

This activity is a great way to practice following directions, recognizing shapes, and building confidence with drawing. Grab a pencil, marker, crayons, or colored pencils and use the picture above as your guide.

Follow the instructions below or scroll to the bottom of this post for a free printable. 

Step 1: Draw the Head and Back

Begin your alligator sketch by drawing the outline of the alligator’s head. Start with a small curved line for the front of the face and snout. Continue the line upward to create the top of the head.

Next, make another rounded bump for the eye area and begin a wavy line that will eventually become the alligator’s back. Don’t worry about making it perfect. The rounded, uneven shape gives this cartoon alligator plenty of personality.

Step 2: Add the Body and Tail

Now extend the back toward the right side of the page. Continue with a long line that curves upward at the end to create the tail.

Draw another long line underneath the body, connecting the bottom of the head toward the tail. Your drawing should now have a long, rounded alligator shape.

This is an easy step because you are simply completing the basic outline before adding smaller details.

Step 3: Draw the Legs

Next, give your simple alligator four legs. Draw two rounded legs toward the front and two hind legs closer to the back of the body.

You can create each leg using short curved shapes with slightly pointed toes. Keep the legs large and simple so they match the friendly cartoon style.

Step 4: Add Teeth and Back Spikes

Now it is time to make your alligator look a little more recognizable. Add small triangle-shaped teeth along the bottom of the mouth.

Then draw several triangles along the animal’s back and tail to create the raised scales or spikes. You can use short horizontal lines or small connecting lines to help position the teeth evenly.

This step is especially fun because these little details really transform the basic outline into an alligator.

Step 5: Draw the Face and Details

Add a large round eye near the top of the head. Draw a smaller circle inside it for the pupil.

Next, add a nostril near the end of the snout. A few small oval markings along the back can create extra texture and make your alligator drawing more interesting.

At this point, your alligator sketch is almost finished!

Step 6: Color Your Cartoon Alligator

Finish your drawing by adding color. In the example, the body is bright green while the legs are a darker shade of green. You can copy these colors or create your own combination.

Color the eye, outline the teeth, and add any extra background details you like. Kids could even draw water, grass, a swamp, or another alligator nearby.

Following these simple steps makes drawing an alligator much less intimidating. This step-by-step tutorial is a great way to introduce young artists to drawing animals while practicing lines, shapes, and creative thinking. Once kids complete their first cartoon alligator, encourage them to try again and create a whole family of silly alligators!

How to Draw a Coyote – Step-by-Step for Kids

Coyotes are clever wild animals that live in forests and deserts. Today, we’re going to draw a super cute cartoon coyote! Get your pencil, eraser, and some crayons ready, and let’s begin

Step 1: Draw the Head

Start by drawing the outline of the coyote’s head. The head looks like it has a W on each side with two pointy ears on top. Don’t forget to make the cheeks fluffy and the chin pointy like a triangle. This gives the coyote a soft and furry look.

Step 2: Draw the Body and Front Legs

Next, draw a small furry shape under the head to start the chest. Then draw two long lines going down for the front legs. Add little oval shapes at the bottom of each leg for the feet.

Step 3: Add the Back Legs

Now, on each side of the front legs, draw two curved lines to make the back legs. They should look like sideways “U” shapes. Then, add two small ovals for the back paws. Your coyote is sitting!

Step 4: Draw the Tail

Time to give your coyote a big bushy tail! On the side of the body, draw a zigzag tail pointing to the right. Make sure it’s wide and fluffy-looking.

Step 5: Add the Face Details

Now let’s make the face super cute. Draw two small ovals for the eyes and a small triangle for the nose. Under the nose, add a small smile. Draw the inside of the ears, and add a stripe across the face for the fur pattern.

Step 6: Color Your Coyote

Finally, color in your coyote! Use brown for most of the body, light cream for the inside of the ears and chest, and black for the eyes and nose. You can get creative with the colors if you’d like!

You Did It!

Great job! You just drew a super adorable cartoon coyote. You can even draw a family of coyotes or add a background like mountains or a desert. Keep practicing and soon you’ll be drawing all kinds of animals!
