I was thinking of getting one as you might imagine for a long time but knew to wait until the video and cut and paste was up and running. Then my trust and beloved Light painting tool, stereo demo player and LG8100 phone died.

I brought it back to Verizon and their service reps at the store here didn't know which way was up. So when my phone died - after a hike looking for Rose Apples last week, and Verizon couldn't fix it (moisture damage they said) and wanted $150 for a new phone (and locking me in for another 2 years), that was it! I immediately asked them to shut off my service and jumped ship. I went right on over to the AT&T store and plopped down twice that for a spankin new 32GB iPhone 3GS!

I am so excited!! Many new learning curves now for sure (on top of what I am already trying to Grok about Digital Photography Workflow, Stock Photo Agency requirements, realizing my music by Mac Recording Studio tactics, etc. What me, learning curves? You don't really think that that's anything new, do you? LOL.

I am so hooked on learning about so many things. It's no wonder I never leave the Web for long. If there was a lady in my life, that would be different. She'd have to be brilliant since I have a very inquisitive mind.

In fact today after watching a documentary about space-time on BBC TV via the Web, I got out Google Earth to explore the Laser and High Energy Physics observatories mentioned which got me onto the GPS System HQ page ( http://wikimapia.org/131252/Schriever-Air-Force-Base & http://www.schriever.af.mil/gpsoc/ ) from which I wound up at the Web site of the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (http://www.nima.mil/portal/site/nga01/) learning about the GPS system that is controlled from a little room in Colorado.

What has this to do with my iphone? GPS is at the core of many of the phones' abilities and services. I can't wait to learn all about this new gadget (last night I download as many manuals, tutorials and tips and tricks pdf's I could find).

So far, I've made a call, taken pix, shot a video, played with the compass and looked at the settings pages. I surfed the Web with Safari and failed at being able to get my mail set up, and syncing with my laptop... That will come in a few days. Right now, I am happy to have a working cellphone again and know that I have joined the Mobile Device generation in earnest!
Thanks for keeping in touch. I shot my last roll of Kodachrome back in 1982 or thereabouts. Here are two of those last images, the first recorded of General Hershy Bar in Barnsdall Park, Los Angeles. The second recorded at the 1982 SAVE OUR EARTH Peace Rally in New York's Central Park showing Peter Paul and Mary being interviewed before their performance.

I had a backstage pass thanks to Peter; whom I'd met three years before at the Songwriters Resources and Services production of a songwriters competition Award Ceremony. I was the staff photographer. I got to sit next to Peter during a lunch break from the rehearsal/sound check rubbing elbows.

You have to realize I learned how to play guitar by listening to PPM recordings over and over and copying the finger picking. So to actually meet on such intimate terms one of my mentors and hero's was a spectacular experience - out shined only by viture of our continued (at that time) friendship. It was he who got me the photographic access to backstage. I have yet to publish any of those images of the celebrities at that time.

We were at the diner on 14th and Wilshire Blvd in LA, in the days of SRS director, Helen King (who's last portrait I shot before she passed on) and before her organization became the National Academy of Songwriters headed by John Brahany (??) and associates.

I have remained in contact with Peter after that, sometimes stopping in unannounced when in town. He even took me to lunch one time. Just the sweetest man you'd ever want to meet. My dad was rather harsh so I am always on the look out for other males that I might want to inherit some father figure role models from. Peter Yarrow is so highly respected (by me and others I'm sure) in that regard.

Speaking of Peter, Paul and Mary, I have a wonderful image of Noel "Paul" Stooky walking up 2nd Ave., part of the Rally march heading toward Central Park. Peter Yarrow's son is clearly shown in my shot with arm in a sling. I'm sure his arm is all better now!

Those years were the highlight of my career as a Photographer. I was already producing V.A.R.I.O.U.S. Media Ink: The Visionary Artists Showcase and Networking Events. The next year, in 1983, V.A.R.I.O.U.S. hit over 200 members who together build the first prototype Creativity Cafe at FutureWorld Expo at the LA Convention Center.
Thanks for keeping in touch. Well, at least one of those "seasonal" special events applies. Its Been A Long Time Since My Sister Called speaking of fathers. I am a bit closer to her, than I am to her husband. That's why this photo is dedicated to my sister's husband (especially since he not I has continued our blood line) who is at the opposite end of the creative spectrum compared to my copious creativity:

If I am a father at all, its because of my giving life to my images, music and dreams... productions designed for peoples enjoyment and edutainment.

I walked off during the basketball movie to make this photo. The shutter was open 3 minutes at f3.5 with ASA 1600. When I went back to my blanket, I realized I was missing my cellphone. I laid all my stuff out on one of the concession tables and told a gal nearby what I was looking for (as well as my multicolor lighted yoyo. She told me someone turned in the phone! What a relief. I had dreams of retracing every step.

I was on my way back to my car when I realized I was missing my yoyo. I didn't find it, but did discover my favorite long sleeve shirt on the ground that I'd unknowingly dropped! That was a lucky find. I never did find the yoyo but I have my phone and shirt both of which would be damaging to have lost. I can always get another yo yo.
Thanks for keeping in touch. We love feedback. Articles copyright 2007 by Peter Rosen
A hole I dug in the sand was my fire pit. I lasted about an hour. I was wanting some company, my bane. I thought of calling Joanne Walgreens but i would have been to early there on the East Coast. Lo and behold, my cellphone rang. Who could it be? Certainly nobody on Maui... it was Joanne! What a psychick! The image is from last nights series I took of my soon to be x neighbor from across the way. We happened to meet at the mailbox and I mentioned she was perfectly dressed for my Spirit body Process. I asked if she'd like to walk to the beach since it was sunset and the magic time. She surprisingly went for it. I got to notice how nicely shaped she is in clothes.
Thanks for keeping in touch. We love feedback. Articles copyright 2007 by Peter Rosen
The images start with a long haired blond walking around with her underwear showing. Zantar showed up next(white beard taught me to swim like a fish back in 1986, my 2nd trip to Maui) followed by my Mac and Media buddy, Ken K. He told me about the Indian Dance performance that had caught my eye already. I was glad for the reminder. I went and wound up with my tripod inside the Castle Theater and got a nice little "animation"of the dancers, befriended the Audio Engineer (Steve) and said hi to a gal I would love to have as a friend at least, but she never returned my call, told me she was working and didn't have time to talk the two times I called her. I didn't realize who is was. I might have chatted her up, but at halftime, I'd gone out to the Big Tree to practice my light painting and go fishing.

Fishing for a woman whom I could fall in love with and visa versa. One came along and was willing to play. The first shot has her in a nice dance pose and well lit face. She was ready to do it again, when in my excitement, I was rushing to get back to the camera, lost my footing and my body went out of control falling forward faster than I could get my feet under me, the ground was getting closer and closer as I headed for the pavement. My left shoe caught and did me in, as I wiped out on the concrete. A spactular site that drew 3 security folks and some onelookers. The gal asked if I'm ok. NO! was my immediate response. I was bleeding very minorly from my elbow, knee, right palm and left toe. My left wrist is not unable to support weight. Its the next day and I am still really hurting all over. The gal tells me shes a massage therapost and I get her number, and that she has a photographer boy friend. Damn. I said. Thats a lousy way to have to get attention! Don't tell him how I do it. I went back into the theater and on the way saw her describing my technique. LOL. I noticed the gal sitting by the sound guy and she looked familiar but it wasn't until the end when I went over to him, that I realized (after I was walking away after saying a brief Hi to her) who it was. But I was in too much pain to act or bark up her tree, still stinging from my fall and the realization that she never called me back to get the fantastic photos I'd taken of her at Little Beach. I will post one here along with some of the other great shots I've been coming up with lately. Are you any good at Cross Eyed viewing of Stereo Pairs?

Thanks for keeping in touch. We love feedback. Yup! Real peak experiences. I will be tellin the tails for sure, if you know where to look. Leave word. Find out. My voyage was from March 11 through April 17 when I traveled over 6K miles in one day to come home to Maui. I had a fantastic adventure with new friends, a lover, fantastic squirrel photos and family fun, plus my birthday celebration at the NY School of Visual Arts Visual Music Marathon (disappointing). Though this will be out of sequence, it marks the place where my recent trip to East Coast will be recounted, along with some of the most wonderful moments of love and divine intervention for my 62nd Birthday Celebration that included a serenade in bed with a beautiful new friend, one of two met this trip, a first! Actually one I met last time I visited but very briefly. I called her and we clicked. It was the first time in too many years that I found myself in bed on my birthday. later upon waking on Easter Sunday, we had dinner at her brothers. Things went better than usual with my family too. I organized and made a pancake breakfast at moms (movie coming) of Maui Chocolate Mango Apple Banana MacNut wth pine nut and fennel accent pancakes. Thanks for keeping in touch. We love feedback. This art form appears to have
originated in Japan (movie making from a series of time exposures of
flashlight paintings):
http://pikapikaproject.blog.so-net.ne.jp/
Obviously I love what I see: people using "my" Spirit Body Process
[LOL] to create an even more fantastic art form. You can see why I
have to learn how to do this~!
PS: I probably already know how, I just have to take the time to make
hundreds of light paintings in a stop motion animation; kinda like
this time lapse i made of myself getting out from under my Alter. Its
called Alter Removal (Altered States):
http://blip.tv/file/1811025/
The film honors my move back to Maui after spending five years in San
Francisco for a last hurrah trying to manifest Creativity Cafe
(except I'll never stop trying to make that humanitarian dream come
true). Right now, I am trusting Goddess and the process of life...
and taking care of myself first (unlike my first 25+ years of
dedication to my vision of how to harness creativity to brew a better
world).
(meanwhile the lens and Rebel 350D camera is in pieces giving birth
to these images before passing, and welcoming my new light source, a
full color flashlight with controllable color and effects)! After each shot, I moved something, waited for the shutter and repeated with something else until all objects were off the box that I had used to ship parts of my SF office back to Maui in.

Now the tricky part. I reset the imaging system to take a photo every 70 seconds after using a high stool, to get into the uprighted box. I had already taken the series of images at 30 second intervals where I slowly propped up the empty box until I was able to get into it.

I closed the end of the box from inside it (which was no small accomplishment) and then squatting, counted to 70 (so I had enough time between shots) for the camera to record a frame, before unsquatting just a little bit more as I poked my head more and more out of the box with each frame.

It was hell for some of those middle positions to hold the squat, fighting gravity for all the time between exposures. Then I realized I could get the stool in the box with me to lean on, which made my body's compression much easier to take.

I composed the music in GarageBand using virtual instruments triggered with my Oxygen 8v2 midi controller, and then married the sound with the images in Apple Quicktime. The movie is better enjoyed at 320 x 240 btw.

Thanks for keeping in touch. Please pray for it. I rushed home and submerged it in freshwater trying to avoid corrosion from salt water. If I am lucky, the electronics should be ok after drying out for three days. I can clean the sensor chip. If nothing shorts out, it will work again. For now, I will let it just sit for a few days to dry out.

This is one of the last photos I took before the camera died (hopefully it will come back from the grave).

The lens, well that's another story - I expect water spots at the very least. I dunked that also in the fresh water ASAP. It sure felt weird to submerge my gear in water intentionally.

I had a cellphone drop into my bathtub one time. I quickly retrieved it, ripped off the battery and let the phone sit for three days. Its been working fine ever since!

I am hoping the same will be true of the camera. Otherwise maybe someone will buy one of the images above or below, printed on fine canvas for $1300. The cost of my mistake and price to replace the gear!

I never should have changed the position where I’d set the camera up in the dark -- to take the first shots of my self, since I could find no model on Little Beach to pose naked (away from the crowd). So I set off alone, apart from the crowd.

I’ve come to accept this my be my lifestyle, not having a partner, and believe me, its not my desire to live life without a partner. It is a place I seem to live, given my creative force needs a lot of alone time for nurturing, growth and exploration-learning curves (for each of my creative expressions no less).

Now, In the darkest night under the canopy of stupendous starlight, with the drum circle sounds barely audible in the distance, I noticed some puddles. A crab in the darkness moved. I illuminated it with my new “paint brush” and wanted to image it.

I adjusted the mini tripod to a position I didn’t realize was so precariously placed... that it caused the accident. That's a price I pay for being a risk taking Aries (and not having a companion to call my attention to my oversight). The camera slide off the rocks into the puddle.

Funny thing is, after recovering the camera from the briny blue and drying the outside off, I lifted it by the strap and heard something drop off into the darkness onto the gravelly rocks I was standing on. It made a noise that sounded like it was the lens retaining ring. I was right about the ring part.

I scanned my stoney footing with the flashlight. In two minutes I discovered, the sound had nothing to do with the camera, It was the sacred family heirloom that had fallen; my dad's gold and diamond masonic ring! It had stealthily slipped off my finger without my even realizing it! Pretty scary to think I could have lost it!

Just two days ago while swimming with Darshan and company at Ahihi Bay the same thing happened, the ring had slipped off... just as we were getting out of the water - only this time it slipped off underwater and I had felt it slide off my finger! Yikes!! It could have been instantly hidden by the many crevices, sand and rocks the currents were pushing around. Thank god it was minor wave action and that Darshan spotted it! The camera I can replace.

Epilogue: As I was home drying everything, a knock on my door revealed Arty farty, who NEVER stops by my place to visit. He always has some excuse, but still he has to pass my home on his way to Little Beach.

It makes me a bit angry that there are few who feel comfortable visiting me in my lair and playing along/collaborating in my multimedia world. The anger is self directed. The feeling is that either I or my place must make people uncomfortable. Its true there are few I even feel comfortable inviting into the intimacy of my studio-base of V.A.R.I.O.U.S. operations. I guess I am just not one people want to be around. A solitary soul rather self absorbed in seeing so clearly how my ideas can contribute to a better world.

Arty confessed someone stole his pants that he’d neglected to put in his pack. He was drunk and stoned. He thought his pants were already in his pack when he carried it over to the drum circle. In the pants pocket were his keys and wallet with bank cards belonging to friends. Maybe mercury went retrograde today?

I have told him how hurt I am that he never visits. As it was, the only reason he came by was to make calls to the bank, girlfriend and borrow some pants (he had shorts on -- but it has been freezing outside at night on Maui lately. He was rather exposed on his scooter with just shorts. I made him promise to return the pants in a week -- as I will be needing them for my impending voyage to the mainland. I knew full well I may never see them again.

I invited him to stay and have dinner here, offering the veggie’s that have been in the fridge a few days. A few days too long! LOL. I have really wanted to share the food with someone! Only problem was there was nobody I feel comfortable with (who is nearby or who would come over). He just laughed and said he’d rather go visit his girlfriend to get laid (rather than hang out with me), especially since she made him dinner. No from me competition there!

He stayed for about 10 minutes --just long enough to see a sideshow of recent images. But he was anxious to go visit his girlfriend... the one who brutalized him that Halloween a few years back. Each to their own. I guess he likes the domineering type. I was so put off I didn’t want to even hug him goodbye when he left.

I normally hug friends who visit upon their leaving, but when someone who expresses they want to spend time with you and repeats that over a period of years and never ever, follows through... well, would you feel loved? Its just so much lip service.

Hey, I am not too bent out of shape about it, because he is one of the few on Maui for whom there will always be a natural affinity and friendship and of course forgiveness. Nobody knows the pressures a person feels from the ramblings of their past haunting their minds that drive a person to smoke, drink, eat, etc obsessively.

For some reason I am not too bent out of shape about losing the camera. I am hoping both camera and lens will work again, maybe needing a bit of repair. But, if they can’t be revived, I guess I will be in the market for a better camera! I am way behind on photo processing, archiving data and marketing my work.

Maybe I am not so bent out of shape because of the fact that yesterday, I got up not alone as usual, but with family and friends around me... cybernetic-ally speaking. I was video chatting with Marc in Germany when Theo came online and hailed me at that moment. I brought him into the video conference and then MLS hailed me and she joined in! The four of us were together in video chat for about half an hour making me feel great to have such dear friends meet and interact with my dear (almost 90 year young) mother! You have to love the ease of use of Apple Mac’s.

POSTSCRIPT: I had taken apart the lens cleaned the glass and put it together 3 times. I was doing a final cleaning on the last lens element when it slipped out of its mount and cracked. The other times that happened it missed the foot rest of the office chair I was sitting in! Not only that, but earlier, after a week of drying out, I had tried the camera for the first time thinking it had dried out long enough. I put the battery in and NOTHING! No matter how many times I changed the settings and took the battery out, scraped the contacts, re charged it, the camera would not work. And, I felt like a jerk! Accidents happen and this was an expensive lesson to use more care. It was ultimately lens creep that did me in. The long lens was pointing down and must have distended, throwing the mini-tripod the camera was mounted on, off balance.

Thanks for keeping in touch. I was tired of being a
black man's nigger at the studio and decided to go with my gut to
contribute my significant talents to serve creative people. I began
to see how technology was enabling a fantastic new way of marketing
art, and so began V.A.R.I.O.U.S. in 1980 -- and the beginnings of my
new career producing interactive art events, public speaking and
nonprofit organization management through V.A.R.I.O.U.S. Media Ink;
The Visionary Artists Showcase and Networking Events that were
marketed in this publication.
