2026 SOAR Into STEM Spring Session 3: Aeronautical Engineering and Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles

High school students from the St. Louis area and neighboring counties participated in the third of four spring sessions of the Wings of Hope SOAR Into STEM Program on Saturday. SOAR Into STEM provides opportunities to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in the context of the Wings of Hope humanitarian aviation mission. Topics covered include Airplane Basics, Mechanics and Engineering, Navigation and Communication and Drone/Flight Opportunities.

In Session 3, led by Wings of Hope Education Programs Manager Lee Ann Nolte and a team of volunteer mentors, the students were introduced to a systematic approach to aircraft design through a series of activities. An outstanding presentation provided by a former Boeing Company engineer transformed theory into practice by using a current jet fighter program as an example of engineering and production excellence right here in St. Louis.

The session began with a review of the Navigation and Communication concepts covered in the previous session. Also, the team of Boeing volunteer mentors led a review of the recent Artemis 2 moon orbiting mission as a practical application of aerospace engineering.

The session's guest speaker for the Engineering Session 3 was Tim Callihan, a Mechanical and Structural Engineer with extensive experience in structural analysis and project leadership at the Boeing Company. Following 35 years at Boeing primarily in the Hornet and Super Hornet programs, he currently serves as a Consulting Engineer for the U.S. Navy.

Callihan's presentation provided an overview of structural analysis using examples from his aerospace industry career and information provided to the students in their SOAR Into STEM Book of Knowledge. Topics included roles of mechanical and structural engineers, oral word problem exercises, review of Hornet and Super Hornet design and operational issues, fatigue detection and failure using household items and aircraft accident investigation procedures involving fatigue failures. Here we feature a portion of his presentation along with a visit from Callihan's friend and colleague, retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral Charles Williams, Jr.

The main activity on the Aeronautical Engineering topic was the installation of an electrical system on a foam aircraft cutout. One objective was to mount a circuit to the aircraft so that two electric motors would run their propellers powered by a battery pack with a switch. Another objective was to add a circuit running navigation lights on the wingtips and tail controlled by a second switch off the same battery pack. Student teams worked on this project before moving on to the second half of the session.

Teams of students built and operated Pitsco Drone Infinity Kit quadcopters in the second half of the session. This project reinforced the structure and systems approaches to aeronautical engineering, emphasizing the use of lightweight materials, symmetry and propulsion in a successful uncrewed aircraft vehicle design. The students honed their skills by flying their drones through hoops and under obstacles while avoiding collisions (most of the time).

Before the end of the session, the students gathered in small groups to meet with their STEM mentors for a debrief and discussion of various topics, including higher education options and aviation career opportunities. These informal small group discussions provide a positive and affirming way to conclude each session.

High school students from the St. Louis area and neighboring counties participated in the second of four spring sessions of the Wings of Hope SOAR Into STEM Program on Saturday. SOAR Into STEM provides opportunities to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in the context of the Wings of Hope humanitarian aviation mission. Topics covered include Airplane Basics, Mechanics and Engineering, Navigation and Communication and Drone/Flight Opportunities.

In Session 2, led by Wings of Hope Education Programs Manager Lee Ann Nolte and a team of volunteer mentors, the students were introduced to aircraft navigation and communication methods directly applicable to general aviation aircraft. Throughout the day, the students worked through increasingly complex navigation tasks, practiced communicating with air traffic control and honed their stick and rudder skills using flight simulators.

The session's guest speaker was SOAR Into STEM volunteer mentor Jeff Butler. He is currently an instructor with Envision Paragliding, flying a modern aircraft that both Da Vinci and the ancient Chinese would recognize. Launching from high elevations in western states like Oklahoma and Colorado, he has flown cross-country in an unpowered paraglider at altitudes over 18,000 feet. After his interactive discussion, Butler laid out his paraglider and explained how the airfoil and control system function during flight.

Volunteer mentor and instructor Cathy Babis was the next presenter, giving an overview of the navigation and communication equipment on general aviation aircraft. From the nearly obsolescent VOR to modern GPS, aviation navigation has progressed significantly over the last fifty years. Babis, a former air traffic controller, also gave real-life examples of communication between aircraft and air traffic control facilities as a valuable preview to the group activity coming later in the session.

Just before lunch, the students were treated to a special guest visit by David Kwasny, owner of the Lancair experimental aircraft temporarily stored in the Wings of Hope hangar. He described the features of the aircraft and the impressive performance he gets on cross-country flights. He also encouraged the students to pursue big goals with a sense of humility and respect for each other. Great advice!

After lunch, the students rotated among four activity stations: Aeronautical Chart Reading, Flight Navigation Exercise, Flight Simulation and Air Traffic Control Communication. Here we feature a short description and highlights of each activity.

Aeronautical charts present a vast amount of information using unique symbology, and attempting to interpret them can be intimidating at first glance. In one of the activity stations, the students were given a list of items to locate on a Missouri Aeronautical Chart and note on their worksheet. The chart legend was "key" to this exercise, though some expert guidance by the current and former pilot mentors was helpful in understanding the terminology associated with the symbols on the charts.

Another activity during the session was a navigation exercise that involved plotting a course using scale maps. A flight scenario was proposed, and the students prepared a planning worksheet containing direction, distance and flight time to various destinations. The SOAR Into STEM mentors were again available to assist in the process.

The students also applied their new skills at the desktop flight simulator station. Using the classic Cessna 172 display, they practiced the flight techniques learned in the previous session on the forces of flight and flight controls while employing basic navigation using compass headings and landmarks.

A unique activity was also included in this session - an Air Traffic Control exercise using a large airport diagram laid out on the hangar floor. The students took turns playing the parts of aircraft and air traffic control communicating during operations around the airport in a scripted scenario. The aircraft were represented by RC Spheros as they landed, taxied and took off from the airport.

High school students from the St. Louis area and neighboring counties participated in the first of four spring sessions of the Wings of Hope SOAR Into STEM Program on Saturday. SOAR Into STEM provides opportunities to apply science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills in the context of the Wings of Hope humanitarian aviation mission. Topics covered include Airplane Basics, Mechanics, Engineering, Navigation and Communications, a Career Fair and Flight Opportunities.

The students gathered in the Wings of Hope hangar to begin the introductory session covering the basics of airplane flight. The session was led by Lee Ann Nolte, Education Programs Manager for Wings of Hope, supported by a host of volunteer mentors. The Aero Experience begins our coverage of this session with the hangar safety briefing and the student/mentor introduction game using the "flying microphone cube."

SOAR Into STEM supports the Wings of Hope mission of "Changing and Saving Lives Through the Power of Aviation" by introducing the students to the humanitarian aviation programs now in place in the U.S. and around the world. Here we include a briefing on the Medical Relief and Air Transport Program and some views of the hangar tour provided by the volunteer mentors.

The guest speaker for this session was Ben Miller, a St. Louis-based charter jet pilot. He gave the students an overview of his flying experience along with an introduction to the principles of flight, aircraft flight controls. and propulsion systems.

Two new activities were introduced this session: Wing Rib Build and P-51 Mustang foam glider flights. Students used a wing rib jig to construct a wood wing rib reminiscent of the Piper Cub currently in the Wings of Hope hangar. This exercise provided a practical application of the aerodynamic theory discussed earlier in the day. The students also assembled a foam glider resembling the legendary WWII Mustang fighter. They labeled the flight control surfaces and competed for longest flight bragging rights.

SOAR Into STEM Spring Session 1 also included small group discussions with the volunteer mentors. Each mentor has experience in the aviation field, and their advice and counsel are invaluable to those students interested in pursuing aviation and aerospace careers. Mentor small group discussions are a feature of each SOAR Into STEM session.

Army Aviation Heritage Foundation and Flying Museum Gateway Chapter Launches Cobra on first Mission of the Year

Throughout the winter, The Aero Experience has regularly visited the Gateway Chapter of the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation and Flying Museum at Creve Coeur Airport. This chapter is part of the national organization whose mission is to "Honor the sacrifice and service of veterans and their families by preserving and promoting the legacy of Army Aviation." The chapter volunteers, most of whom are military veterans, operate and maintain the classic Huey, Cobra and Kiowa helicopters previously in service with the U.S. Army. The Foundation sponsors the Sky Soldiers Demonstration Team seen at airshows across the nation, and chapters also provide ride events at their base and other locations within their region. The Gateway Chapter's next ride event will be May 2 at Creve Coeur Airport. Here we show the aircraft under winter maintenance, with the Cobra evening runup prior to deployment on its first mission of the year: Annual crew training at the Legacy Chapter in Hampton, VA.

General Aviation on a Mission: Midwest Aviation Serves Humanitarian and Animal Rescue Roles

As the first day of spring approaches, the Midwest Aviation community is looking forward to the warm weather days ahead. While most general aviation pilots reduce their flying during the winter months, some individuals and organizations continue to use their talent and resources to serve others all year-round under strict guidelines and conservative personal minimums. Here we highlight two examples of that spirit of service from our recent airport visits.

Spirit of St. Louis Airport - Wings of Hope

Wings of Hope is a global humanitarian nonprofit organization serving those in need around the world for over sixty years. The mission of Wings of Hope is "Changing and Saving Lives Through the Power of Aviation." That mission is accomplished directly through Global Humanitarian Programs and the U.S. Medical Relief and Air Transport (MAT) Program. Several MAT flights per week transport ambulatory patients with chronic medical conditions for treatment at specialty medical centers in 26 states within 800 miles from their St. Louis facility. Here we feature one of the MAT Piper Seneca aircraft ready for the next mission.

The current Wings of Hope Spring Raffle Aircraft is Cessna 206, N206KY, the first MAT mission aircraft for the organization beginning in 2003.This well-maintained fleet aircraft offers excellent useful load and bush flying capabilities in addition to STOL and factory seaplane kits. Tickets are on sale for this grand prize and two other valuable prizes as well.

Creve Coeur Airport - Pilots N Paws Rescue Mission

General Aviation can play a valuable role in transporting our furry friends to their new foster or forever homes located in other states across the country. Here we feature our second Pilots N Paws Rescue mission in recent weeks, this time featuring our friends Jamie Gotto and Jill Rempala flying in Jamie's Mooney M20K.

The Aero Experience is pleased to include this report from Jamie and Jill describing their mission:

Sammy, the Great Dane pup, was a stray on the streets of North Little Rock. He was being temporarily fostered while returning to health by Little Rock Animal Village volunteers, but he needed to be transported to Just Giants Rescue on the Illinois/Wisconsin border for the next chapter of his life. Rescue groups and pilots connected on PilotsNPaws.org and the journey was planned.

On Saturday, March 14, St Louis local pilots Jamie and Jill flew out of Creve Coeur Airport (1H0) to North Little Rock following their Women in Aviation St Louis - Women with Wings board meeting.

They met Sammy at the FBO and were bowled over by his size and the amount of love he insisted on sharing with everyone he met. Sammy jumped in the plane and laid down in the backseat for the entire flight to St. Louis Regional Airport (KALN). There he took a break, then continued his journey with Joliet, IL pilot, Mike, where he continued to re-charge his batteries by napping most of the way. (Photos below courtesy of Jill Rempala).

Now that he’s safely arrived, Sammy is settling in, stretching those long puppy legs, and learning what life as a loved giant is all about.

EAA Chapter 864 Hosts Rusty Pilots Seminar at St. Louis Regional Airport

EAA Chapter 864 hosted a Rusty Pilots seminar Saturday at St. Louis Regional Airport. The program is produced by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and taught in person by a team of flight instructors from around the country. Over forty attendees participated in this highly interactive session led by Jeanne' Willerth (ATP/CFI/CFII/MEI) visiting from her home base at Kansas City-Lee's Summit Regional Airport. According to AOPA, over 13,000 pilots have returned to flying after attending a Rusty Pilots seminar or used the online resources prior to completing their next flight review. A Rusty Pilot seminar was also held at Elite Aviation's Spirit of St. Louis Airport facility in 2018.

The Rusty Pilots seminar was held in the airport's new event space off the circle drive near the F-4 jet display. EAA Chapter 864 has moved their meetings there, and it is also available to the public by arrangement through the airport director's office. Here we show the room arrangement in our coverage of the program.

The Rusty Pilot seminar is a 3.5-hour intensive session that uses the flight scenario method to review skills that tend to atrophy from disuse over time, including aeronautical chart reading, weather METAR and TAF interpretation, airport ground operations, ATC communication and airport pattern entry and exit points to name a few. A detailed Resource Guide and Scenario Handout were provided by AOPA to facilitate the session. The exercise also reviews the aeronautical decision-making process as the group works through variables such as engine and instrument failures, unexpected storm fronts and airport closures that all pilots will eventually experience. The next step for these "rusty pilots" is to contact a local CFI and prepare for a flight review.

EAA Chapter 864 is very active at St. Louis Regional Airport, hosting special events throughout the year along with their monthly meetings on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00 P.M. The chapter is known for their Pancake Breakfast, this year on June 20 to celebrate the launch of the Air Race Classic from the airport. They also support the popular fall Wings-N-Wheels Fly-In. Here we feature Nick Hobbs presenting a thank you gift to Jeanne' Willerth and announcing the Pancake Breakfast event. The chapter's exhibit included some new items this year - custom laser engraved gifts now available to benefit the scholarship fund. Examples of acrylic lights, with the EAA Chapter 864 logo and St. Louis Regional Airport layout, are shown below.

Another special guest at the Rusty Pilot seminar was Jenna Gerdes, Outreach Director & Development Assistant for Angel Flight Central based in Kansas City, MO. Since 1995, Angel Flight Central has been arranging flights for those needing medical or humanitarian care through a network of volunteer pilots donating their time and aircraft to helping others. Throughout the last three decades, Angel Flight Central has developed an efficient system to match pilots to flight requests, helping to ensure successful outcomes. Here we show Jenna Gerdes with her exhibit and raffling T-shirts following the seminar.

General Aviation on a Mission: Over 100 Dogs Find New Homes During Pilots N Paws Fly Away Event

Eight rescue dogs were flown from St. Louis Regional Airport to Airlake Airport in Lakeville, MN on Friday as part of the Pilots N Paws Fly Away event scheduled for last weekend. Originally envisioned as a 50 aircraft effort flying over 100 dogs on Sunday, it was modified due to winter weather moving in between the two airports. Through some creative planning, 22 volunteer pilots flew 71 of these lucky dogs from several St. Louis area airports while another 30 went by ground transportation. The mission was coordinated by Rachel Jouppi, a pilot and former Mrs. Minnesota who has dedicated much of her time and talent to "Flying with a Purpose."

Six of the rescue dogs from this location were provided by Dog Saver Rescue, a non-profit, no-kill shelter located in Washington, MO. Dog Saver Rescue was licensed in 2010 and has since found homes for over 3,000 dogs. St. Louis Regional Airport Director Danny Adams and Assistant Director Drake Blackwell welcomed the volunteers as they positioned their vehicle on the apron for easy transfer of the dogs to the three aircraft.

The aircraft arrived and departed between 3 P.M. and 5 P.M. on what was a breezy but still clear afternoon despite the gathering threat of weather for the weekend. Here we feature Ryan with his recently acquired Piper PA-46 (M350) Malibu Mirage based at KSUS; Dexter and Tori in the Piper PA-28-181 Archer II from Ames, IA; and Peter and his wife in the Lancair Columbia from the Chicago area. The accompanying video clearly shows the enthusiasm exhibited by everyone involved at St. Louis Regional Airport.

45th Annual Ultralight and Light Sport Aviation Safety Symposium Held at Southwestern Illinois College Granite City Campus

The 45th Annual Ultralight and Light Sport Aviation Safety Symposium was held at the Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) Granite City Campus on Saturday. The event, sponsored by AeroCareers, EAA Chapter 64, Illinois Department of Transportation Division of Aeronautics, FAA St. Louis FSDO and the Illinois Ultralight Advisory Council, offered a variety of exhibitors and expert presenters addressing concerns common to ultralight and light sport aircraft (now MOSAIC Sport Pilot) operators.

The Aero Experience coverage of the day's activities includes a pictorial review of the guest speakers and exhibitors. We recommend that ultralight and sport pilots attend the next symposium on February 27, 2027.

Here we review the program as it unfolded throughout the day, beginning with arrivals and registration. Below, attendees are greeted by event host Bob McDaniel and the FAA St. Louis FSDO staff as they register for Wings Pilot Proficiency Program credit.

Breakfast was available before the symposium and lunch was served at the midday break. Piston Aviation anchored the aircraft exhibits along the main foot traffic area across from the terminal entrance. Their brightly colored training fleet aircraft on display - BRM Aero Bristell 912ULS and two Tomark Aero SD4 Vipers - immediately catch the eye. These well-equipped classic LSA types are a common sight operating from their three airport locations in St. Louis (1H0, KALN, KSET) along with their conventional Piper and Cessna stablemates. Piston Aviation provided demo flights in the Bristell and Viper aircraft throughout the Expo and in past years, including an impressive four-ship photo shoot in 2024.

We begin our coverage of Piston Aviation at the 2025 Midwest Aviation Expo with this look at aircraft arrivals and Wednesday evening setup activities on the apron.

2025 Midwest Aviation Expo Expanded Event Coverage: Our Host, Mount Vernon Outland Airport

The Seventeenth Annual Midwest Aviation Expo was held September 4-6 at Mount Vernon, IL Outland Airport. A variety of light sport aircraft brands were on exhibit, including the Bristell 912 and the Tomark Aero Viper provided by our sponsor, Piston Aviation. Another attraction included the Junkers A50 Junior Rotax-powered 95% replica. Many of the exhibitors included traditional Light Sport Aircraft brands, while others represented the larger, heavier and more complex aircraft now available to sport pilots under the new MOSAIC rules. We will review two of those - the TL Sport Aircraft Sirius BackCountry and Sparker aircraft - in future videos.

Mount Vernon Outland Airport is a great venue for the Midwest Aviation Expo, offering a central location, plenty of apron space for exhibitors and fly-ins, the renowned Bonnie Cafe restaurant and a friendly corps of volunteers who make everyone feel welcome. Air Evac Life Team 11 has stationed medevac helicopters at the airport since 2000, and the airport's fire department is equipped with modern response and rescue equipment. Here we feature an L-39 jet making a fuel stop during the Expo.

During the Midwest Aviation Expo, Mount Vernon Outland Airport management and airport businesses team up to provide the best possible experience for the exhibitors and visiting public. Preparing for each Midwest Aviation Expo is a year-long process, and it quickly comes together on Wednesday when the exhibitors arrive. Chris Collins and the volunteers swarm the apron, lending a hand wherever needed - parking planes, securing tents and performing the many other tasks necessary to ensure a smooth opening day. General Aviation on a Mission: Wings of Hope Celebrates Volunteers, Launches Medical Flight

The Aero Experience visited Wings of Hope, the global humanitarian nonprofit organization headquartered at Spirit of St. Louis Airport, on February 10 for a fun volunteer appreciation event - the 2026 Chili Cookoff! This annual winter gathering brings the warmth of comfort food and celebrates the work of the many volunteers who fulfill the Wings of Hope mission of "Changing and Saving Lives Though the Power of Aviation." The competition was tough, but the reigning champion, Beth Campbell, once again took home the blue ribbon with Mark Grobelny and Bill Hoffman taking second and third, respectively.

During our visit, a Medical Relief and Air Transport (MAT) Program flight departed Spirit of St. Louis Airport. The MAT Program provides critical airlift for those needing regular treatments at specialty facilities in 26 states within 800 miles of St. Louis. Most treatment plans require repeated flights to cancer, orthopedic or cardiology centers over months or years, and the MAT Program covers the transportation and lodging for each trip. Flight schedules vary from week to week, with some days launching two flights. In 2024, 15 volunteer pilots flew 114 missions flying over 83,000 miles.

The first MAT Program flight was made in 2003 using the single-engine, high wing Cessna 206 now offered as the spring raffle aircraft. The current aircraft fleet consists of two Piper Senecas and a Piper Navajo, twin-engine aircraft flying with two pilots, a flight nurse and/or doctor along with the patient and accompanying family member. Patients are usually ambulatory, but they can also be transported on a medical bed in the aircraft if necessary. Each volunteer flight crew brings a wealth of commercial flying experience and servant's spirit to every MAT flight. Current and new patients can apply for flights by contacting the Wings of Hope Flight Operations Department.

Midwest Aviation Success Story: Looking Back at the 2025 Zenith Aircraft Homecoming Weekend

Zenith Aircraft Company held the 2025 Homecoming Open Hangar Days and Fly-In on September 19-20 at their Mexico, MO Memorial Airport facility. Those new to Zenith Aircraft toured the factory and checked out the aircraft on display, including the very popular, slatted-wing CH750 STOL that can take off and land from almost anywhere. Current builders and owners traded stories and picked up tips of the trade learned through their own experience.

Zenith Aircraft Company owner, Sebastien Heintz, was on hand to meet with visitors throughout the event. Zenith Aircraft recently completed an expansion of their factory that will allow additional space for kit manufacturing and builder construction stations. Heintz believes that the new MOSAIC regulations will increase access to aviation, and that the current Zenith Aircraft types offer expanded capability to provide the best combination of economy, performance and modern avionics available into the future.

The Zenith Aircraft Company was formed in 1992 to manufacture kit-built aircraft in their Mexico, Missouri facility featuring the Zenair designs from Chris Heintz. In addition to the aircraft types offered in kit form, the company maintains generous customer service and building assistance programs that make the purchase and building process more successful. Advanced technology manufacturing techniques have made the parts relatively easy to assemble, and the numerous hands-on workshops give ample opportunities for new kit owners to assemble one sub-assembly at a time as they progress through the building process. Each aircraft is designed to offer ease of assembly, fuel economy and a desirable flight performance envelope. Here we feature builder classes and a factory tour offered during Homecoming Weekend.

Saturday began with breakfast prepared by EAA Chapter 944 from Chillicothe, MO and sponsored by Avemco and Kitplanes Magazine. The Aero Experience coverage begins with the early morning tour of the aircraft on display flown in by owner/builders from around the country. We also feature fly-in visitors from Piston Aviation checking out the lineup during a stop on their cross-country training flight.

Inside the hangar, industry exhibitors were available to discuss how their products and services apply directly to the needs of the owner/builders in attendance. This sampler, as well as the coverage in the video below, includes: North American Aerospace, UL Power Aero Engines, F&A Cycle, Garmin, Avemco and Dynon Avionics among others.

Saturday's keynote speaker was Carson Stilson, builder of the well-equipped CH750 Super Duty featured on his Wairworthy YouTube channel. His aircraft is especially suited to his backcountry, high density-altitude flying in Utah. He accomplished the first-ever Lycoming YIO-EXP-289 (IO-390) 215hp engine installation on a flying Zenith. This powerplant gives him good performance even though it is not turbocharged and it is heavier than the typical engine choice. Stilson uses an in-flight adjustable Hartzel propeller, adding to the already nose-heavy nature of the aircraft.

The paint scheme and seat pattern reflect the geography of Zion National Park, his favorite scenic flight area in Utah. The carbon fiber panel features Garmin Dual G3X touch displays, and dual control sticks are a major modification from the standard Y-stick configuration. For YouTube filming, a one-switch system runs multiple cameras and Starlink is used for live broadcasts (only by an accompanying passenger). Textron Launches Citation Ascend as Latest Edition of the 560XL Series

Textron Aviation recently introduced the newest member of their Citation 560XL series, the Citation Ascend, into service. The Ascend received FAA certification on November 5 after the completion of a three-year, over 1,000 flight hour certification program. The first customer delivery was accomplished on December 30. This jet is more than a tweak or a rebrand. It offers an enhanced flight experience for passengers and crew alike, with customer-driven amenities found on the longer-range Latitude and Longitude. Luxury and efficiency can indeed be engineered into a midsize business jet. (Textron Graphic)

The Citation Ascend takes the 560XL family to new heights with updates within the XL airframe. The latest Pratt & Whitney PW545D engines power the aircraft via a dual-channel FADEC system and autothrottle. Three fourteen-inch, high-resolution Garmin G5000 displays give the two-person crew the flight data they need the way they want it presented. For crew convenience and passenger pre-board comfort, the APU can be operated unattended to provide electric power and air conditioning. The cabin layout provides for a flat floor, sideways adjusting seats, charging stations, wireless adjustable lighting and electronic window shades, a concert hall quality music system and wi-fi service from GoGo. The ideal capacity is four passengers, but the jet can accommodate up to 12 passengers. A large aft cargo hold can accommodate golf clubs and suit bags loaded vertically.

The Aero Experience coverage of the Citation XL series begins with a look at an aircraft managed by Gateway Jets at St. Louis Downtown Airport. We recently visited with Corey Tomczak, owner and President of Gateway Jets, to get a preview of the new hangar and learn about the Citation XL in his management portfolio. In the photos and video below, Tomczak elaborates on opening the new hangar and shows us the Citation XL, the largest jet currently managed by Gateway Jets. Courtesy services such as food stocks and professional detailing, as shown in the video, are included. Aircraft inspections and preventive maintenance are provided by industry leaders such as West Star Aviation. Other services offered by Gateway Jets include aircraft brokerage, flight crews and aircraft hangar rental.

In September, Textron brought their mockup exhibit to Aero Charter at Spirit of St. Louis Airport. The Aero Experience toured the display and interviewed John Reimer, Senior Technical Marketing Advisor and Citation series pilot, for this feature story and the video included below. He gave an excellent overview of the Ascend and demonstrated the enhancements to the passenger cabin.

"The Citation Ascend fits right between the CJ4 and the Citation Latitude," Reimer told The Aero Experience. "So, as we leave the Citation Four and grow into the Ascend, we gain a lot of the large jet amenities and features to include auxiliary power unit, a true airstair door, thrust reversers, large baggage compartment, single-point fueling - all those things you'd expect in a large jet."

News Release: Johnson County Airport Commission Powers Aviation and Economic Growth in 2025

[New Century, KS - Jan. 28, 2026] 2025 was a transformative year for the Johnson County Airport Commission (JCAC), marked by bold investments, strategic partnerships and historic milestones across all its facilities, including New Century AirCenter, Johnson County Executive Airport and the surrounding business parks. From major infrastructure upgrades to record-setting federal grants, JCAC advanced its mission to drive economic growth, enhance aviation capabilities and strengthen regional connectivity throughout the Kansas City metro area.

One of the year’s most significant developments was the advancement of Dream Air New Century, LLC’s plans for a new aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility at New Century AirCenter. Pending final development approval by Johnson County commissioners, the project will include a terminal building and two large hangar structures on an 8.23-acre parcel east of 1 New Century Parkway. This $20 million investment will add substantial aviation support infrastructure, including multiple hangars and associated facilities, enhancing the AirCenter’s capabilities and positioning it as a critical hub for commercial aviation services.

“This project represents a bold step toward strengthening New Century AirCenter’s position as a leading aviation hub,” said Bryan Johnson, executive director of Johnson County Airport Commission. “It’s about building capacity for the future and creating opportunities that benefit the entire region.”

JCAC also finalized a five-acre lease for a new 20,000-square-foot corporate jet hangar, a strategic investment that addresses growing demand for corporate and business aviation facilities across the Kansas City metro. This development enhances New Century Airport’s ability to attract and retain corporate flight operations, aviation-related investment and high-value jobs. By expanding operational capacity and elevating service offerings for corporate users, the Airport Commission is laying the groundwork for long-term economic benefits through lease revenue, fuel sales and broader regional growth.

At Johnson County Executive Airport, reconstruction of t-hangar rows Mike and November – located on the south end near the air traffic control tower – also began, marking the complete renewal of all t-hangars at the airport.

In addition to these milestones, JCAC announced in September that New Century AirCenter received its largest Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant to date, underscoring the airport’s strategic importance to regional aviation. The substantial $21 million investment will fund essential improvements to enhance safety, boost operational efficiency and support future growth. Among these priorities is Runway 18-36 – the second longest in the Kansas City metro area and a critical piece of aviation infrastructure serving corporate, military and general aviation operations across the region – which now requires full reconstruction after its last rehabilitation in 2005. The project to reconstruct the runway and upgrade its lighting, along with new airfield signage and markings, is expected to begin in 2027 and will be planned to minimize operational disruptions.

Complementing these efforts, JCAC obtained $15 million in federal funding for a new air traffic control tower to replace the existing structure at New Century AirCenter that has served for more than eight decades. Design work is underway on the modernized tower, which will improve air traffic management, strengthen safety and accommodate anticipated growth in business and general aviation, with full operation expected by early 2028.

“These investments ensure that Johnson County will continue delivering safe, reliable aviation facilities to serve our community, local businesses and military partners,” said Johnson. “The momentum in aviation across the region is unprecedented, marking a new era of opportunity and growth for our airports.”

Beyond aviation, New Century AirCenter experienced significant industrial and logistics expansion. In the third quarter of 2025, CJ Logistics America opened a state-of-the-art, rail-served cold storage warehouse developed in partnership with Yukon Real Estate Partners and BGO. The 291,000-square-foot facility – connected to Upfield’s production plant via an above-ground conveyor bridge – strengthens the region’s food logistics capabilities and supports global brands such as Country Crock®, I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter® and Imperial®. Meanwhile, VanTrust Real Estate’s newly completed, 356,000-square-foot Class A industrial facility within the adjacent New Century Commerce Center became available for tenant leasing. Designed to meet modern operational needs, the flexible industrial space accommodates warehouse, distribution and logistics users, addressing strong regional demand for high-quality industrial assets.

JCAC’s 2025 infrastructure improvements extended to rail operations as well. The New Century AirCenter Railroad advanced a $2 million short-line rail improvement project, supported by a $1.4 million Kansas Department of Transportation grant through the Rail Service Improvement Program. The project includes track rehabilitation, tie and ballast replacement and crossing enhancements to boost safety, efficiency and freight capacity. These improvements will strengthen the AirCenter’s link to the national rail network, support regional businesses and reduce truck traffic to drive economic growth and multimodal connectivity for Johnson County and the state of Kansas.

Another strategic milestone was the sale of the 450,000-square-foot New Century Office Building in October, transitioning the property to private ownership to spur redevelopment and enhance the AirCenter’s commercial presence. This move reduces the County’s ongoing maintenance and capital obligations while generating immediate value through the transaction proceeds and future tax base growth. Private redevelopment is expected to modernize facilities, attract tenants and support aviation-related and complementary business activity, reinforcing the AirCenter’s role as a regional economic engine. The final closing is anticipated in the coming months, pending completion of the 120-day due diligence process.

As JCAC embarks on the new year, its airports continue to serve as a powerful driver of economic growth, contributing more than $1.1 billion annually to the local and regional economy and supporting nearly 5,000 jobs. Looking ahead, the Airport Commission remains focused on driving progress and fostering a vibrant, connected aviation community for years to come.

News Release: St. Louis Downtown Airport Strengthens Role as Regional Economic Engine in 2025

[ST. LOUIS/January 27, 2026] St. Louis Downtown Airport (KCPS), a premier general aviation airport located just minutes from the Gateway Arch in St. Clair County, Illinois, grew in its role as a regional economic engine in 2025. Throughout the year, KCPS experienced significant tenant investments and improvements in airport infrastructure, while continuing to be an active regional player in workforce development and industry attraction.

In 2025, the airport welcomed investments by tenants that augmented its own, strengthening St. Louis Downtown Airport’s ability to meet growing demand and ensure it remains a leading destination for business aviation. Among the most recent tenant investments is a new corporate hangar facility recently opened on the airport’s west side by aircraft management company Gateway Jets. The state-of-the-art hangar features 100-foot bi-fold doors and can accommodate up to five Citation aircraft.

This project follows Gulfstream Aerospace’s $30 million expansion of its completions and outfitting operations at the airport, completion of which was celebrated in May 2025. The investment added new equipment and machinery, supporting a growing workforce that now exceeds 700 employees. Gulfstream’s operations in the region encompass maintenance, repair, overhaul and completions, with the facility supporting the completion of brand-new business jets from the heart of the Midwest.

“Here at St. Louis Downtown Airport, our tenants are thriving, and many are expanding their operations,” said Airport Director Sandra Shore. “These investments reflect the confidence businesses have in KCPS as a critical gateway for the region and a strategic location for growth.”

Complementing tenant investments, KCPS is advancing several major capital improvement projects. The airport recently completed $1.1 million in improvements to a key access road, enhancing connectivity for the airport and more than 700 employees who work onsite. Work is also progressing on the Taxiway Bravo reconstruction project. Phase one, which includes drainage and site improvements, is wrapping up at a cost of $2.5 million. Phase two, a $14 million reconstruction of 3,500 feet of taxiway, begins this spring. The third and final phase – reconstruction of the remaining 3,500 feet of taxiway – is scheduled for 2027. The total investment is estimated at $25 to $30 million, with completion expected by the end of 2027. Importantly, the airport will remain fully operational throughout construction.

Shore said the airport also has secured $3.6 million in state funding for a new general aviation terminal, with construction slated to begin mid-2026. The project involves tearing down the existing 55-year-old terminal and rebuilding a modernized facility that better meets the needs of today’s business aviation customers. The airport will remain open during construction, which will take approximately one year.

“All of these improvements ensure we can continue to serve our customers well into the future,” Shore noted. “We’re building the infrastructure that supports growth and strengthens our position as a leader in business aviation.”

Workforce development also remained a priority for St. Louis Downtown Airport in 2025 as the region’s aerospace and aviation industry continues to grow. The airport collaborated with St. Louis University (SLU) and Southwestern Illinois College (SWIC) on summer camps, academies and events, including Girls in Aviation Day, inspiring youth to explore careers in this vibrant ecosystem. In October, KCPS partnered with SLU’s Flying Billikens to host the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s (NIFA) 2025 Region VI and VIII SAFECON event, welcoming ten collegiate teams from across the Midwest. Competitors showcased their skills in navigation, short-field landing, power-off landing and other aviation exercises. Winners from the event hosted locally are set to advance to the national competition in May 2026.

Located in the communities of Cahokia Heights and the Village of Sauget in Southwestern Illinois, St. Louis Downtown Airport serves as the region’s front door for business aviation, supporting more than 25 tenants. Collectively, the airport and its tenants generate more than $422 million in annual economic impact and sustain well over 1,500 jobs.

Piston Aviation Opens Third Location at St. Charles County Regional Airport - Smartt Field

Piston Aviation held a Grand Opening event at their third location, St. Charles County Regional Airport - Smartt Field, on Saturday, January 17. The new, fully renovated, flight training center is located in the previous Skylink Aviation hangar on the west apron. Piston Aviation has updated the facility to provide multiple training rooms, flight planning technology and offices for their chief pilot and visiting DPEs to better serve students during their training and check flights. Self-serve aviation fuel (AvGas) is available at this location. CFIs and fleet aircraft will be available there and at Piston Aviation's Creve Coeur Airport and St. Louis Regional Airport locations as needed to meet customer demand.

The Aero Experience coverage begins with a tour of the facility as shown in this short video captured previously and these photos from opening day. Piston Aviation staff greeted guests, served lunch and provided activities for the younger future pilots. Aircraft were positioned for discovery flights, some of which were delayed or rescheduled as a snow squall transited the area.

Saturday's Grand Opening event was held in typical Piston Aviation style, with food, fun, family and flying. Discovery flights were conducted in the pattern as weather conditions allowed in the Piper Cherokee and Cessna 172 fleet aircraft.

Piston Aviation provides flight training programs tailored to the needs of their customers, including the Accelerated Private Pilot course and flexible scheduling. Financing is also available. Students in the Purdue Global Professional Flight and Aviation Management Degree Programs may obtain their flight training through Piston Aviation in St. Louis. On-line scheduling and regular CFI communication make the training process flow smoothly.

News Release: MidAmerica St. Louis Airport Soars in 2025 with Record Travel, New Route and Major Investments

MASCOUTAH, Ill. (Jan. 21, 2026) – MidAmerica St. Louis Airport closed out 2025 with unprecedented success, marking another year of growth fueled by record-setting passenger numbers, expanded nonstop flight options and significant infrastructure advancements. As demand for convenient, affordable travel continues to surge, MidAmerica has solidified its role as a premier transportation hub for the Metro East and the greater St. Louis region.

From the start of the year, MidAmerica set the pace for success. March marked the first new monthly passenger record, and that momentum carried through the year with six additional months achieving new highs. July became the busiest month in the airport’s history, welcoming approximately 57,000 travelers. Overall, passenger traffic soared 25.3% over 2024, reaching more than 384,000 passengers — a milestone that also represents an 18% increase over 2022, the previous record-holder at 326,000 passengers. This remarkable growth underscores MidAmerica’s continued rise as a key regional gateway for leisure travelers.

The airport continued to broaden its route network in 2025, offering nonstop flights year-round or seasonally to a wide range of sought-after destinations. The newest addition was a twice-weekly service to Gulf Shores, Alabama, which launched with its inaugural flight on May 23. Other popular destinations include Destin/Ft. Walton Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, Ft. Myers/Punta Gorda, Jacksonville, Knoxville, Las Vegas, Myrtle Beach, Orlando/Sanford, Sarasota/Bradenton, Savannah and Tampa Bay/St. Pete.

“The numbers for 2025 reveal travelers are increasingly choosing MidAmerica St. Louis Airport for its unmatched convenience and value,” said Darren James, Director of MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. “We’re thrilled to keep expanding our route network while advancing major infrastructure projects, including the new General Aviation Facility and Federal Inspection Station that will open the door to international commercial service and attract even more carriers in the future.”

The new 25,277-square-foot Federal Inspection Station building is the latest in a series of strategic expansions designed to accommodate rising passenger volumes and enhance operational efficiency. Its embedded General Aviation Facility is projected to open in early spring 2026 with the capability to serve international flights of up to 20 passengers, while the Federal Inspection Station itself remains on track for completion in spring 2027. These improvements build on the airport’s $34 million terminal expansion completed in 2023, which nearly doubled its size and introduced modern amenities to elevate the traveler experience.

This past year also was a milestone year for MidAmerica St. Louis Airport’s growing aviation business park, as work was completed on Boeing’s new $200 million, 300,000-square-foot production facility. The facility is home to manufacturing operations for the MQ-25 Stingray — the U.S. Navy’s first operational, carrier-based unmanned aerial refueling aircraft — which is expected to make its first test flight in Q1 of 2026.

Progress also advanced on the $97 million, 5.2-mile MetroLink extension from the Shiloh-Scott Transit Center to MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. The project includes a new MetroLink station adjacent to the terminal and a 2.4-mile frontage road, creating a direct connection to St. Louis Lambert International Airport and improving accessibility for both travelers and employees of the various tenants at MidAmerica St. Louis Airport. As construction nears completion and testing is set to begin in the coming weeks, the targeted June 2026 opening will mark a major step toward improved regional connectivity.

“The growth and development at and around MidAmerica St. Louis Airport continue to deliver tremendous benefits for the region,” said St. Clair County Board Chairman Mark Kern. “The airport, together with Scott Air Force Base and onsite tenants, supports more than 23,000 jobs and drives $3.1 billion in economic impact for the bi-state St. Louis area. Recent expansions and ongoing projects will further strengthen that impact, ensuring MidAmerica remains a vital part of the region’s dynamic aviation landscape.”

Beyond growth and investment, the airport also served as the host site for the inaugural Southern Plane Pull competition in May, presented by the Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) and Special Olympics Illinois. The event united teams of men and women who put their strength and teamwork to the test by pulling a 44,000-pound GoJet aircraft, raising crucial funds to support Special Olympics Illinois athletes.

On Site with The Aero Experience: General Aviation at Spirit of St. Louis Airport and St. Charles County Regional Airport - Smartt Field

The Aero Experience continues our new year of general aviation coverage with more sponsor visits from last weekend. On Sunday, we returned to Spirit of St. Louis Airport where Elite Aviation operates from the north apron. Even during this severe cold spell, the Elite Aviation Cessna Skyhawks were in the air on local pilot training and rental flights. Along with the launch and recovery of the Elite Aviation fleet, we also include some general aviation activity from Air Evac LifeTeam Bell Long Ranger and Bell 407, a Randigo Cessna Caravan survey aircraft, a visit from Piston Aviation's Piper Arrow and a beautiful Beech V35 Bonanza for good measure!

We also made our way to St. Charles County Regional Airport - Smartt Field for Piston Aviation's Grand Opening event on Saturday. The snow squall moved past to the south and the sun popped out occasionally throughout the bitterly cold day. Regardless of the weather, the event drew a steady stream of visitors and some of the planned discovery flights were accomplished in the airport pattern. The Grand Opening will be covered in a future post, but here is a preview along with a few other aircraft as seen from the west apron.
