The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)says that &#8220;a diet based on the Food Guide Pyramid provides adequate amounts of all the vitamins a child needs.&#8221; But then, there are a lot of other factors that decide whether your child is getting adequate amounts of vitamins, such as the child&#8217;s eating habits, composition and quality of the diets, etc.</p>
<p>One important thing to note here is that the quality of most foods available now has declined. The only good ones available now are organically grown food. Just look at these figures: the amount of calcium in broccoli has fallen by a whopping 50 per cent, the iron content in watercress is down by a steep 88 per cent, the vitamin C in cauliflower has fallen by a huge 40 per cent&#8230; You may not be giving your child the usual fare of refined food spiked with sugar and fat and carbohydrates. Yet, there is no guarantee that he or she is getting her required daily dose of children&#8217;s vitamins.</p>
<p>Still experts disagree much on this subject of children&#8217;s vitamins. The AAP advises giving your child a vitamin supplement only if your pediatrician recommends it. That is because most of the daily foods are fortified. However, the AAP acknowledges that a daily dose of children&#8217;s vitamins won&#8217;t hurt your child unless it exceeds the recommended daily allowance for any vitamin or mineral. Also, such a daily dose of children&#8217;s vitamins help fill in any gaps in a child&#8217;s nutrition, and also helps children who are sensitive to certain foods. What is to be borne in mind here is that children&#8217;s vitamins cannot replace good food. They can only supplement your child&#8217;s food. If your child is not eating well, you should not only give him children&#8217;s vitamin supplements but also take steps to improve his eating habits and his diet.</p>

Although most people stress out over the occasional zit, acne can deliver serious blows to an individual&#8217;s sense of confidence and self-perception.  Acne can cause a person to experience consistently blemished skin that may include pimples, papules, abscesses, cysts, blackheads, whiteheads, and other painful inflammations of the skin.  Moreover, acne can be a whole body problem.  While most people are seriously afflicted primarily in the facial area, many people also experience considerable blemishing across their back, chest, neck, and other areas of the body.</p>
<p>While most people experience the brunt of acne during the difficult adolescent years, imagine the agony of living with acne well into your middle years.  With the stress of modern day living and increased exposure to environmental pollutants, adult acne is becoming a fact of life for many adults.  Although most people will only have to deal with transient acne, some will experience far worse.  Here is a quick run-down of the most serious forms of acne.</p>
<p>Acne Conglobata (AC) This is a very uncommon form of acne that can produce significant disfiguration.  Acne conglobata is characterized by the development of burrows in the skin, along with papules, abscesses, keloidal and atrophic facial scars.  Individuals with AC often develop blemishes that appear in clusters of two or three.  Cysts are often present that are filled with pus. Nodules may also be present, especially in the area of the back and chest.</p>
<p>Who is more susceptible to acne conglobata? In general, males are more likely to experience AC.  Onset of AC usually occurs at a young age, between the ages of 18 and 30.  Although no one knows the exact cause of AC, some believe it is caused by a mutation in the XXY karyotype chromosomes.  A person with AC may experience extensive scarring and subsequent disfigurement.  Because the effects of AC can often be dramatic, individuals afflicted with the skin disorder may be at greater risk of suffering from self-esteem issues, depression, anxiety, and they may feel stigmatized.</p>
<p>Acne Fulminans (AF):  Acne fulminans, sometimes referred to as acne maligna, was originally thought to be acne conglobata (AC).</p>
<p>The major characteristics of acne fulminans include sudden onset of ulcerating acne, which may be accompanied by fever and symptoms of polyarthritis.  Usually, AF does not respond well to conventional acne treatment, such as antibacterial therapy.  The most successful treatments appear to be debridement used in conjunction with steroid therapy.</p>
<p>What causes AF?  It appears that acne fulminans is caused by a weakened immune system and increased levels of testosterone and certain anabolic steroids.  These high levels of hormones cause an increase in the production and excretion of sebum and the acne-inducing bacteria known as propionibacterium acnes (P acnes).  Some skin professionals believe that isotretinoin may also precipitate an eruption of AF.</p>
<p>How can you tell the difference between acne conglobata and acne fulminans?  Although the physical symptoms may at first appear identical, AF is usually characterized by the presence of more physical pain.  Patients with AF may describe feelings of bone or facial pain, migraines, and fever.  Acne conglobata and acne fulminans also differ in the way they are treated.  While AC may be treated with conventional anti-acne oral and topical agents, AF typically does not respond well to such treatments.  AF responds better to steroid treatments.</p>
<p>Gram-Negative Folliculitis: Gram-negative folliculitis refers to an infection of gram-negative rods that usually occurs after an extended period of antibiotic therapy.  Scientists use the word &#8220;gram&#8221; to describe the blue stain that is used in laboratories. This is often used to locate microscopic organisms.  The bacteria that cause gram-negative folliculitis does not stain blue, thus the term &#8216;gram-negative.&#8217;  The most common forms of bacteria that are believed to cause gram-negative folliculitis include E. coli, serratia marcesoens, pseudomonas aeruginosa, and bacteria&#8217;s from the proteus and klebsiella species.</p>
<p>How does gram-negative folliculitis differ from regular acne vulgaris?  Most cases of gram-negative folliculitis produce less papules and comedones than acne vulgaris.  Treatment of gram-negative folliculitis is fortunately much easier to treat than other severe types of acne.  In most cases, conventional antibiotic therapy will help clear up gram-negative folliculitis.  Isotretinoin may also help clear up this condition.</p>

<p>This lens consists of protein and water.  This protein is precisely arranged for optimum functioning.  However, during the natural aging process, these proteins can become clumped together and cause the eye to cloud.  This cloud is what is known as a cataract and will most likely get larger as time progresses if left untreated.  Your eye doctor will probably want to wait until the cataract interferes with your eyesight before opting to remove it.</p>
<p>There are three different types of cataracts you should know about:</p>
<p>Cortical Cataracts:  This type of cataract is formed in the cortex of the lens.  Over time, a cortical cataract will extend from the outside of the lens to the center.  This type of cataract is common to diabetes sufferers.</p>
<p>Nuclear Cataracts: Nuclear cataracts are the most common type of cataracts. Forming in the center of the lens, this type of cataract is caused by the normal aging process. When this cataract first forms, you may even experience improved vision.  However, this effect will not last long.</p>
<p>Subcapsular Cataracts: This kind of cataract starts at the back of the lens. If you take steroids, have diabetes, or suffer from farsightedness, you may be susceptible to supcapsular cataracts.</p>
<p>Fortunately, all three types of cataracts can be removed with eye surgery.  Today&#8217;s surgeons implement the use of lasers and other innovative technology to remove a patient&#8217;s cataracts with a minimum of risk or discomfort.  Some cataract surgeries will involve removing the clouded lens and replacing it with a clear plastic lens called an intraocular lens.</p>

<p>Imagine this scenario if you will. Let&#8217;s say that you are 7.5k into a 10k run and the road starts to incline. Ever so slightly, but enough to put that extra strain on your legs as you try to maintain contact with the leaders. And the temperature? Well, it&#8217;s the morning, but it&#8217;s hot and liable to get hotter before the end. And to make matters worse, you were so desperate to maintain contact with the leading group, that you forgot to take on liquid at the last feeding station. And did you use tight fitting calf length socks? I know they are all the rage, but why did you do it?</p>
<p>So what do we have here?</p>
<p>* Extra strain on muscles?<br />
* Dehydration?<br />
* Loss of essentials salts?<br />
* Restriction of blood flow?</p>
<p>All in all, I think that we are describing running calf cramps, waiting to happen.</p>
<p>I am not sure that anyone has definitive answer to the cause of cramps, but there are certainly several steps that you can take which could help save you from disaster during competition, in any sport.</p>
<p>1. A Proper Warm Up</p>
<p>Ok, I know you know, but did you do it? If not, then those cramps could be coming. Seriously, if you have been involved in any sport to any level, then you will be aware of the importance of a proper warm up. And I don&#8217;t just mean a brisk walk up the stairs to the changing room either! A proper warm up should include a routine that gently stretches your muscles to get them ready for the increased exertion, and gets your blood flowing around your body. Not only will a warm help prevent calf cramps, they will also help prevent some of the injuries that might occur when you put sudden strain on cold muscles.</p>
<p>And whilst we are talking of warm ups, don&#8217;t forget warm downs as well. Warming down after exercise can also help prevent cramping and reduce the risk of injury.</p>
<p>2. Train Hard, Run Easy</p>
<p>Have you heard this before? No? Well you should give it some thought, because it&#8217;s true. When you train for a sport, not only do you practice the necessary skills required to execute which ever event you are competing in, but you are also training your body for the rigours of the event. To given an exaggerated example, if you train for a sprint, and then try and run a marathon, your body won&#8217;t be ready. If you try it, I think you could be in for some serious cramps.</p>
<p>Remember, train hard, run easy.</p>
<p>3. Water is Sport&#8217;s Life Blood</p>
<p>Whenever you start to exercise, you start to sweat (or you should). Sweat is nature&#8217;s way of cooling you down when you get hot, so, it&#8217;s a good thing. And since your body is mainly made of water, then you should have plenty, shouldn&#8217;t you? Well, considering that you lose moisture from your body when you breathe, sweating does take a lot of fluid out of your system.</p>
<p>And your body will demand that it be replaced!</p>
<p>If you start feeling dizzy, or experience a rapid heart beat, then these could be signs that you are starting to dehydrate. I will take it as read that if your mouth and lips feel dry, then you should be taking water on board. It is not always possible to take on fluid during sport, but always have some available as soon as you are able to drink.</p>
<p>4. Sport A&#8217;int No Catwalk.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s true! Sport is not a fashion parade. If you think it is, then you are hanging out in the wrong place! There&#8217;s nothing wrong with looking cool whilst you compete, but be practical. Don&#8217;t risk injury (or cramps) by wearing clothing that is too tight, and that restricts your body&#8217;s movement, either externally or via blood flow. Believe me, I know. When I was younger, I used tie up&#8217;s on my socks whilst playing soccer (not as a fashion statement you&#8217;ll understand), just to keep my socks up and my shin guards inside my socks. Three quarters of the way through a game, my calves would tighten up, and I would roll on the floor in agony. Once it was understood, that I &#8216;only had cramp&#8217;, I was the object of much derision, but believe me, cramp is far from funny if you are the one suffering.</p>
<p>Wear appropriate clothing.</p>
<p>5. Eat Properly.</p>
<p>When you are sweating and working hard, not only do you lose water, you also lose nutrients. There is speculation that that athletes who get calf cramps could suffer from low levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. I am not suggesting that you do low level analysis of your breakfast cereal, but the message is clear. Look after your body, and your body will look after you.</p>
<p>Eat sensibly, and eat the right foods.</p>
