After posting a goal and four assists during the first two months of the season, Steve Zalewski picked up momentum from December on and finished third on the team with 41 points, backed by 11 goals and 30 assists. In 73 games played, he also registered 144 shots and 24 penalty minutes.

Between Feb. 17 and Mar. 1, Zalewski enjoyed a season-long five-game scoring streak, registering three goals and four assists. He registered a season-high three points on Dec. 12 against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

In his fourth season with the Devils, assistant captain Tim Sestito produced 23 points, backed by seven goals and 16 assists, in 67 games. Additionally, he registered a game-winning goal, 104 shots and a team-high 106 penalty minutes. The Rome, NY native also appeared in six NHL games, producing a +1 rating and two penalty minutes.

Captain Jay Leach finished third among the d-corps with 60 games played. He amassed four goals, 10 assists, 14 points, 51 shots, 63 penalty minutes and a +9 rating. Off the ice, Leach was named the team’s winner of the IOA/American Specialty AHL Man of the Year Award for his outstanding contributions to the Capital Region community.

Yankee Stadium will host a doubleheader of a different sort this winter.

The 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series will see the three New York City metropolitan NHL teams play a pair of games at the home of the New York Yankees. The New York Rangers will face the New Jersey Devils at 12:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 26, 2014, and the Rangers will face the New York Islanders at 7:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 29, 2014.

It will mark the first time hockey has been played at the new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009 across the street from the original. The new stadium seats 50,287 for baseball.

“The innovative nature of the Stadium Series affords the opportunity to have all three NHL teams in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area play, outdoors, at one of the most-recognized stadiums in the world,” NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “We’ll be able to create a multi-faceted, multi-day experience for our fans, and we thank the teams, Coors Light, the New York Yankees and Yankee Stadium for their support of this memorable NHL event.”

“The teams playing in these two games — the Rangers, Islanders and Devils — have tremendously loyal fans and the rivalries are intense because of their proximity and playoff history,” said Mathieu Schneider, NHLPA special assistant to the Executive Director. “Yankee Stadium is a landmark venue in New York City, and to see hockey played in such a celebrated setting will be extremely memorable to the players and everyone involved.”

While a number of NHL teams have used the ice rink in Central Park for practice, the games will mark the first time professional hockey has been played outdoors in New York City.

“We have long thought that Yankee Stadium would be a great venue for outdoor hockey,” said Lonn Trost, New York Yankees Chief Operating Officer. “In addition to being a first-class baseball facility, Yankee Stadium was designed to house unique and memorable events, such as the NHL Stadium Series. Hosting two of the NHL’s classic rivalries at Yankee Stadium will be a great kickoff for the worldwide sporting events in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area scheduled in early 2014.”

This will be the second time the New York Rangers have played an outdoor game. They beat the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in the 2012 NHL Winter Classic, played at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.

“The New York Rangers are honored to participate in these two historic games at Yankee Stadium, bringing hockey into the home of another one of New York’s iconic sports franchises,” Rangers president and general manager Glen Sather said. “Playing hockey outdoors takes the game back to its roots and reminds us all why we laced up our skates as youngsters. We are excited to be able to bring that experience and thrill to our fans and the city of New York.”

It will be the first time the Devils and Islanders have taken part in outdoor games.

“The New Jersey Devils are proud to have been selected to host the first of two games at Yankee Stadium,” Devils president/CEO/general manager Lou Lamoriello said. “The NHL Stadium Series will be a memorable experience for our organization, our players and, most importantly, our fans. We are thrilled to play our divisional rival while adding to the legacy of one of the nation’s most recognized sports facilities.”

“The New York Islanders are honored to take part in the National Hockey League’s outdoor Stadium Series,” added Islanders general manager Garth Snow. “Our fan base is one of the most passionate in the NHL. The support we consistently receive from our fans was on display during the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs and I expect it to be on an even greater scale when we take on the Rangers. This is what makes the games against the Rangers one of the best rivalries in the League. I look forward to seeing a strong contingent of the orange and blue in the stands at Yankee Stadium.”

The games in New York are the latest additions to the Stadium Series, which also includes a game between the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Jan. 25, and a game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Chicago Blackhawks at Soldier Field in Chicago on March 1.

The Devils are proud to call Albany home and on Tuesday, the team will stand with the many people and businesses that provide the heartbeat of the downtown area.

Between 5-8 pm Tuesday, the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (or Albany BID) is hosting “Illuminate Downtown” at Times Union Center.

Among many of the activities on the arena floor, patrons will be exposed to more than 60 downtown restaurants, pubs, retail, services and businesses. Not only will music be provided The Chronicles (Downtown Albany’s 2012 JazzFest Competition Winners), but individuals will have the chance to build connections with business leaders, owners and residents.

As a special treat, the Devils will be hosting Bubble Hockey with broadcaster Josh Heller providing exciting play-by-play action for all games. Every person who participates will receive a free ticket voucher to be redeemed during 2013 Opening Night.

Additionally, patrons will have a chance to try on hockey equipment and get an understanding of what Devils players wear when competing in the AHL and NHL … or what our fans wear during a “Dress Like A Pro” intermission contest.

Saints + Devils = Successful partnership!

Although Saints and Devils might seem unlikely partners, the Siena Saints marketing majors taking Sales Management MRKT 326 gained real world experience selling tickets for the November 2nd Albany Devils ice hockey game at the Times Union Center.  A class project designed to deepen the students’ understanding of sales concepts through practical application, students in two teams worked with the ticket sales staff from the Albany Devils hockey team, learning the ins and outs of the ticket sales business. The objective of the project was to allow students to create sales strategies, identify target markets, develop marketing pieces, promote the event and present their results.

Daniel Alderstad, Class of ’13 said, “The Albany Devils sales project was really good.  It is a way for students to get real live experience in selling, and overcome any fear of selling. It was really satisfactory to see that we made our goal, and it is something we can put on our resumes.”

Professor Lisa Semmes adds, “In this competitive job market, giving the students the ability to gain confidence, explore a bit of the sales career, build their resume, and even have something to talk about when they go on job interviews was definitely a goal of this project.”

In addition to working toward individual and team goals, the students more than delivered on the class goal of selling 300 tickets to the “College Night” Friday game; they crushed it selling a total of 468 tickets!  For achieving their sales quota, the Saints earned a Pizza party given by the Albany Devils, highlighted by an in-class talk from Devils CEO, Chris Ciceri.

“I truly had an awesome experience “interning” for the Albany Devils this past semester with Professor Semmes Marketing class. This was an experience I would never been able to have if it wasn’t for her. It not only opened my eyes to a real live sales job, but also reinforced everything I learned in class,” said Kayla Haskin ’13.

Critical to the success of this project was the strong foundation of marketing skills learned in the School of Business coursework students to date, and also the excellent support and partnership of Chris Valente, the Albany Devils Vice President of Sales and Marketing, who helped the students hone their sales strategies and offered much wise advice on selling.

Chris says, “The Albany Devils organization is privileged to be associated with Siena College. Professor Semmes elective sales class is about a real life sales experience where students work towards achieving goals as individuals and as a team. Life is a team effort and no one gets far alone. We look forward to continuing this great partnership between the Devils and Siena College.”

Sounds like this Saints and Devils partnership is a match made in heaven!
