A 999 Emergency Services awareness day takes place in Barnsley town centre on Saturday, 18 May, from 10am to 4.30pm.

The Town Centre Services team is very excited to be working with the Emergency Services in this way as this is the first time an event of this nature has been put on in the town centre and they are looking forward to welcoming families into the town and engaging with the attending services.

Attending (subject to emergency commitments) will be:

South Yorkshire Police
RNLI
St John Ambulance
The British Red Cross
Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team
Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Young Padawans will need to use the force when they visit The Entertainer on Saturday 4th May.

For the Sith Lord himself, Darth Vader, will be joining staff at The Entertainer in the Alhambra Centre, Barnsley.

As well as the fearsome Star Wars character, The Entertainer staff will be on hand to wow vistors with a range of toys, gadgets and tricks. The store opens from 9am, with the VIP guest in the shop from 10am to 4pm.

Gateway Church will be providing a bake sale within the store, plus there will also be a raffle with prizes donated from The Entertainer; including Hexbug Warriors Starter Set, Raa Raa The Noisy Lion and Moshi Monster prizes.

All monies raised from these special events will donated to two important local causes. Darcy's Days, is the campaign that's been set up to to help raise money for a little girl from Darfield, who has been diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. The second beneficiary is Gateway Foodbank - helping those in crisis.

LIVE in Barnsley

‘LIVE in Barnsley’ is a FREE music festival and is spread over a number of venues in an area of Barnsley town centre. This event is set to take place on 22 June 2013.

The aim of the festival is to try to recreate a Greenfield vibe in an urban environment. We really like the idea that people can wander in and out of venues, and so far, this strategy has worked well at similar events such as ‘Sheffield Tramlines’ and ‘Live at Leeds.’

Owing to the current economic climate and the demise of the public house trade from excessive taxes and changes in the laws, we are attempting to keep the costs of the festival to music fans and venues to an absolute minimum. ‘Live in Barnsley’ is organised by music loving volunteers. We are putting together a package for other bands that will allow them get discounts on food and drink. There will also be a central merchandise area where bands can sell their CD’s, t-shirts etc. All the money from these sales will belong to the band selling the goods.

The whole idea of LIVE in Barnsley is that you can wander around the town and soak up the atmosphere; we are trying to turn the town centre into one big musical festival playground. Getting around and reaching all of the venues is a doddle. The venues are all within easy walking distance of each other; the majority of them are clustered around the Market Hill and Peel Square area, with others only a short walking distance away.
