We're pleased to inform you that our new club website is now up and running.

As well as a bit about us and photos of our Festival and recent tour and social events, the new site has full details and contacts pages for you to get in touch with us if you fancy playing for us, or if you run a team like ours and would like to arrange a game against us.

Now that we have the new site, we'll post all of our new content on there from now on. We'll be retiring this blog shortly, so please update your favourites with the address of the new site!

A new era for the Allstars!

A huge round of applause to our founder, club secretary and inspiration Maxie Allen, who's stepping down after 16 glorious years at the helm. Many thanks to Maxie from every Allstar, past and present, for everything he's done for our club - the Allstars simply would not exist without him!

At our AGM in central London today, Maxie handed over the reins to Nick Chadwick, our new club captain. Nick will enjoy the fullest of support from everyone in our club as he takes on this prestigious new role, and will be ably assisted by our new vice-captain, Pete Cresswell. Paul Bowman has become our new club treasurer and Garreth Duncan membership and communications secretary.

Maxie becomes our honorary life president and will continue as our fixtures secretary for this year. Contact details for our new committee to follow soon.

Allstars kick Mighty Wanderers into the long grass

Barnes Common, Sunday 6 September 2015. St Anne's Allstars (84-6) beat Mighty Wanderers (83-8) by 4 wickets.

Although we have played Mighty Wanderers for over a decade, the award of the James Abrahams Trophy to the winner of this fixture is relatively new. Last season, we had surrendered the trophy in humiliating fashion, with one of our worst ever batting displays. On a sunny September day, we had our revenge in a gripping, low-scoring encounter, with some disciplined bowling and fielding and a gem of an innings from Sam Macdonald.

The pitch was almost as green as the one we'd used for the Festival a week earlier, though it had at least been cut - in contrast to the outfield, which looked as hirsute as Ben "Hipster" Hampton's face. Our new Allstars stumps got their first outing in a competitive game, having been adorned with a message not printable on a family blog like this. We'll have to wait another game for our IPL-style light-up bails, which failed to arrive in time.

Skipper Vivek Seth won the toss and put Mighty Wanderers into bat, and right from the start the big squeeze was on. Haroon Khalid picked up where he'd left off in the previous fixture, giving openers Steve Tjasink and Richard Winter very little to hit and the odd "Rain Men stare". At the other end, Martyn "Sex Panther" Langridge was similarly miserly as we made runs very hard to come by. He was unlucky to go wicketless as we gave both openers a life in his final over, two difficult catches behind the stumps and at slip going down. But Haroon, having had his fair share of bad luck this year, made the breakthrough by taking the fielders out of the equation, a full delivery knocking back Tjasink's stumps.

Ben Hampton replaced Haroon at the railway end and was quickly in the action as he bowled Sotherby. At the other end, Pete Cresswell teased and tormented both batsmen with his flighted leg-spin, Winter getting another let-off as an awkward, overhead chance was missed at square leg. But Chris Burke made no mistake as he caught Andy Charlton as he tried to sweep Pete.

With almost half the overs gone, Wanderers had limped to 17 for 3. But this brought their main man James Knight to the crease, and he set about repairing the damage. The score had more than doubled before skipper Winter's luck finally ran out as he was bowled by Chris. Next man Grant, who walked out to the crease replete with sunglasses, looked useful, but having pinned him at one end, was run out by Martyn's brilliant direct hit from cover.

Bryn Rhys, the man with the Welshest of Welsh names, similarly struggled to get off strike as Lucian "The Sky with Diamonds" Phipps kept up the pressure, before Chris struck a second blow as he had Rhys caught by Pete at mid-wicket. Skipper Vivek brought himself into the attack, and had Gaf Matthias smartly taken by Sam behind the stumps - everyone except the umpire hearing the massive nick - but it didn't matter as Vivek bowled him next ball. We struck again the following delivery as Brown lofted Vivek towards mid-on. I got a hand to it but couldn't hold on - but the batsman was still on his way as I picked up and ran him out with our second direct hit of the day.

Having watched the carnage unfold at the other end, Knight began to find the boundary in the closing overs, and Maggie "The Cat" Page finally gave him some worthwhile support as she scampered singles to get him back on strike. Wanderers' total of 83 for 8 didn't look much - but the spectre of last year's catastrophe was still in the back of our minds.

The best way to approach a small target is to be positive from the beginning, and Richard Stephenson, in an unfamiliar opener's role, went for his shots from the start. But both Wanderers opening bowlers started well, Tjasink quickly finding "the Barnes Common length" as he bowled Rocket. Pete had seen off the first couple of overs, but the first time he really middled one he was unlucky to pick out their best fielder at mid-wicket. Ben Hampton began in his usual positive fashion, only for Page, who had made light work of our lower order in last season's debacle, to get him again as she found some turn with her off-spin. Next ball, Tjasink bowled James Abrahams with a beauty, and we were 17 for 4 and facing another Wanderers batting nightmare.

Sam quickly got into his stride, and I hung around for a bit to give him some support. Page's immaculate line and length began to err, as Sam swatted a full ball effortlessly for six over square leg and I lofted her down the ground for a one-bounce four. We'd doubled the score before Tjasink found another peach to hit the top of my off stump. Haroon replaced me, and had almost seen off Page when he was given out to a shocking LBW decision - apparently on the grounds "it hit his leg". Next on our shopping list of gadgets - a DRS ball-tracker. We were 39 for 6 and still not halfway to the target.

Chris joined Sam at the wicket, and the two left-handers saw us to the drinks break. But the first over after the break effectively settled the game, Sam taking the grassy outfield out of the equation as he launched into skipper Winter's bowling with some powerful aerial shots through the leg side. Winter's over disappeared for 20, equalling (I think) the Allstars record for most runs off an over, and we were nearly there. Chris began to find his touch too, and he finished the game in style by smacking Brown over cow corner.

So the second most important (and second smallest) trophy in cricket is safely back in Allstars hands after a splendid game against some sporting opponents. The hype for next year's return fixture is already beginning …

Man of the Match:Sam Macdonald. A class above every other batsman on the field, making mincemeat of some difficult batting conditions.

Champagne Moment:… can I claim it just this once? Certainly the first direct-hit run out of my long Allstars career.

Allstars defeat Rain Men in lively affair

St Annes's Allstars (181ao) defeated Rain Men (160-5) by 21 runs. Neale Adams reports.

The England victory at Edgbaston in the morning that sealed a superb Ashes win, obviously inspired the Allstars for their home match against the Rain Men at Barnes Common on August 8, 2015.

Having won the toss on a sun drenched field (and a team decision that it was far too hot to field first) the Allstars went into bat with Grobler and MacDonald leading the attack. And what a job they did. Grobler knocked up a healthy 23 before being being caught behind by Allen with a ball delivered by George Robson - aged 12. More of that later. MacDonald was joined by Grant and continued to knock the ball around the common with some fine stroke play. Certainly not bad for the unassuming MacDonald who was less than confident about his batting prowess before the match

Grant was able to stay at the crease for a good period, but was again caught behind by Allen from a ball delivered by Robson Senior.

Hampton then joined his landlord out on the square and together the ball was sent to the boundary nearly as many times as Maxie has disparaged Cook and the ECB. MacDonald finally succumbed to another delivery by Robson Snr, edged to the safe hands of Allen keeping behind the stumps. MacDonald’s 64 was a great effort. It was fortunate that the first four Allstars into bat put 100 on the score board (TG had helped with a tally of four), as the remaining lot had obviously been inspired by the Australian first innings of the fourth test.

Marshall marched into battle and was sent back after facing his second ball - ct Allen, b Robson Snr. Burgin followed quite literally - being sent back to the pavilion after the second ball from another delivery by the consistent Robson Snr.

Haroon ‘Eye of the Tiger’ Khalid followed - but didn’t wait for the second ball. First ball, caught Cooper, bowled by Frank Robson, aged 10. Langridge followed hoping to stop the rot. He did - by spending a little longer at the crease and assisting Hampton on his way. Langridge was eventually dispatched for 4 by another ball by Frank Robson, that was knocked into the hands of Craft.

Devlin actually did stop the rot - by knocking up four before being caught by Robson Senior from a delivery by George Robson. Adams followed Devlin and sadly saw the dismissal of Hampton who was trying to knock another ball out of the park, but edged it to the fielder Cooper. However, the in-form Hampton had knocked up a brilliant 58 to keep the Allstars in the picture.

Khalid returned to the crease as the team were playing with 10 and improved on his first innings with a tally of seven, before Adams was left in no man’s land waving his bat around like a fly swat with the ball hitting it, popping up into the air and being caught by the ever vigilant Frank Robson. And yes, it was Robson Snr who delivered the ball.

A total, with extras, of 181 was in place. And from the Allstars, a tip of the hat to the Rain Men Robson family - George and Frank of which both play for the Surrey under somethings. Little did we know.

After a fine tea (well done the Allstars, as ever when it comes to food and drink), the Rain Men started the chase, as Hampton and Khalid led the bowling attack. And excellent work it was too. Although not high in wickets, the run rate was kept very low. The first break come with a delivery from Khalid to Rose who put the ball into the air and forced Grobler to turn, run and catch the ball. Khalid’s second came after an edge from Pool, who threatened to upset proceedings, was caught behind by Marshall. Second time lucky...

Polangec replaced Rose and Allen replaced Pool - and together the pair set about forming a stand. However by the drinks break after 18 overs (in the 35 over match) the Rain Men were only on 60.

Grobler came on to replace Hampton, and Grant replaced Khalid in the bowling and again capitalised with good tight bowling. Even more impressive was the work rate of the Allstars fielders. To a man, balls were chased down and many runs saved. Burgin in particular had a good work out and stopped many a boundary ball.

Devlin took over from Grant, but like TG and Grobler no way through was found. That was until the mighty Langridge bowled his first session of the season. And what a session it was.

First to go was Allen - who knocked up a very commendable 60. Trying to put one over the bowlers head, Langridge leapt like a salmon - or self dubbed Sex Panther - to take the ball mid air. Second to go was Peckham for three - direct hit on the stumps. The same exit befell Cooper who went for naught. A fine Langridge haul of 3 - 23.

But still much had to be done, good Rain Men batting had put their tally up to the 140s and the Allstars had to keep it tight in the field.

Khalid had been supporting Langridge in the bowling department and tensions flared into less of a Rumble in the Jungle but more Verbals on the Common, when Polangec and Khalid exchanged words over Khalid’s wild staring after delivery and a few bouncers that had been put into the mix. All in all I thought the bowling was pretty good, maybe that was the problem. If anything the confrontation certainly livened up proceedings. Khalid’s figures read 2 - 24 by the end of play.

With overs dwindling, accurate bowling and tight fielding the Rain Men were unable to reach the required run rate and posted a final score of 160. Polangec a creditable 48.

Beers in The Sun at Barnes concluded the days proceedings, and with the Ashes secured and Palace beating Norwich 3-1 away, the Allstars second victory of the season rounded off a perfect summer’s day..... that is unless you were a Tottenham fan. Here’s to many more......

The Gentlemen of West London are one of our oldest and friendliest rivals in social cricket. Our long history of fixtures against them has yielded just two Allstars wins and the odd near miss amidst a number of painful drubbings. Last year we had run them much closer than usual, and they came into this fixture having unusually lost their opening four games. For 15 overs we dared to dream of a third Allstars victory, only for normal service to then resume in the cruellest of defeats.

The ground was a new one for us, and the pitch looked a very good one for batting with a temptingly short leg-side boundary from the pavilion end. My bad luck with the toss continued, as Gents skipper Horace Hibbert called correctly and unsurprisingly chose to bat first. But we were to get off to an incredible start as Paul Bowman, charging in down the slope, struck twice in his second over, rearranging Hemin Patel's stumps before Sachin Desai aimed an ambitious drive over the top for Ben Hampton to take a steepling catch at mid-off. Unbelievably, in KP's next over Nilesh Dubey attempted the same shot and fell in identical fashion, and the Gents were 20 for 3. As KP remarked himself, a most un-Gents like start.

Nick Chadwick fared less well from the other end as the Gents began to find their way back into the game. Haroon Khalid, who had bowled well without any luck in the previous games as catches had gone down, replaced him and finally took the fielders out of the equation as he produced a crackerjack yorker to bowl Praveen Bocha. Next over, Ben repeated the dose from the other end as he wrecked Mamidi's stumps with a full delivery. The Gents were 56 for 5 and we were pinching ourselves.

Bearded opener Jonny Small had watched the devastation from the other end while his own wicket looked far from secure. A run out chance went begging as he dawdled in mid-pitch, and he began to unveil his shots as he and Komal began the Gents fightback. Komal was living dangerously too as a couple of shots just evaded the fielders. At drinks they were 92 for 5 with the game in the balance.

We gave both of them a life just afterwards, a desperately tough chance at gully and a skier at mid-on both going down, and another run-out opportunity was missed as Chadders' throw went inches wide. Like the good side they are, the Gents made us pay as the short boundary was ruthlessly targeted. As so often happens when two batsmen get in on a good pitch and a hot day, heads dropped and our ground fielding suffered as Small and Komal ran riot in the closing overs. Their partnership of 213 was, according to Gents stalwart Andy Burman, a club record for any wicket.

270 looked an impossible target, and the Gents opening bowlers were to prove up to their usual standards. Jamaican Hibbert quickly found his line and trapped James Abrahams lbw on the back foot. Ben Hampton went on the attack in his usual death-or-glory style, but Anil Uruganti proved just as sharp from the other end as he knocked over his stumps in the following over. KP also started positively, but he tried to hit Aguirre's opening loosener out of the park and perished at cover.

The game looked gone at 34 for 3, but Chadders, in the batting form of his life, and debutant Matt Murray mounted a courageous fightback. Chadders punished anything short or leg-side, and Matt unveiled some classy cover drives. At the drinks break they'd put on 50 and an unlikely victory was still just possible.

The dream died after the break as our old adversary Sanjay Patel dismissed them both, Matt picking out the fielder at mid-wicket and Chadders losing his stumps. Paul Nicol, who had made one of his trademark disappearances during the tea break as he went shopping for tea bags, was also bowled by Sanjay, and the run rate soon went way out of reach. But the Allstars spirit was unbroken as we refused to give in, Ben Marshall putting up stout resistance and Neale Adams, braving a back problem to make up our numbers, going for his shots. Though they both fell, Haroon and Richard Stephenson continued the fight right to the end as we saw the overs out.

Benidorm Tour 2014 - match report

Sporting Alfas are an institution in the town of Albir, 5 kilometres from Benidorm and home to a mixture of locals and British and Scandinavian ex-pats. They are a very professional outfit, playing over 100 games a year from February to November, a mixture of league fixtures and friendlies against a wide variety of touring sides. Their ground has come a long way since I last visited 15 years ago - while its primary function is still a golf driving range, the wicket is much improved and the outfield noticeably flatter, and they have added nets and an impressive clubhouse decorated with memorabilia from the many clubs that have visited them. Facing their 1^st XI on the Saturday of the tour, we knew we were in for a tough contest.

Sporting Alfas' captain Ben Fletcher won the toss and decided to bat first, though Maxie's apparent determination to field first regardless of the toss or conditions caused some consternation to one of the tour party. Opener Joel Brook began with a flurry of boundaries, but George Metcalfe looked less certain as Nick Chadwick and Gren Thompson began to find their rhythm. Both had no luck in their opening spell as both Sporting Alfas openers were given a life, a tough chance at slip and a much easier opportunity at mid-off both going down.

After 10 overs the score was 75-0 and looking ominous for the Allstars, before an inspired piece of fielding from Vivek Seth off his own bowling gave us the breakthrough. Brook unleashed another powerful straight drive back down the wicket, only for Vivek's fingertip to touch it onto the stumps with Metcalfe out of his ground at the non-striker's end. Brook retired shortly afterwards having reached his 50, but new batsmen Christian Muñoz and Adam Alger continued confidently. Martyn Langridge put a brake on the scoring with consecutive maidens, but it was Neale Adams, also playing his first Allstars tour game, who broke the stand.

Maxie had minutes earlier moved Martyn to cover on the grounds "he was a better fielder", and had placed himself at extra cover - precisely in the direction Alger's shot flew. There followed an agonising few seconds as Maxie looked around waiting for someone else to call for the catch before he gloriously held on. This was the signal for Gren's recall, and the third greatest living Yorkshireman (Geoff Boycott being the first, though Alan Bennett's status as the second was hotly disputed over the weekend) charged up the slope, knocking Muñoz's stumps over before bowling Jamie Roper off a bottom edge. Andy Dell (husband of our brilliant tour guide Katie) fared no better as Gren produced a perfect yorker to shatter his stumps. Gren's second spell had yielded 3 for 7 off 4 overs, and the Allstars were right back in the game.

Neale soon struck again, finding Muhammad Shahzad's glove for Chris Gould to take a juggling catch behind the stumps, and Sporting Alfas were 180 for 7. But their skipper Fletcher is a class act with the bat, and with Jack Perman also in good touch they repaired the damage and increased the rate towards the end. We had performed superbly in the field to restrict such a good side to 250 off 40 overs, but missing so many of our leading batsmen it was always likely to be a different matter when it was our turn to bat.

19 year old Roper looked sharp and was getting plenty of bounce out of the pitch, but Allstars openers Neale and Martyn bravely kept his first two overs out. Neale crunched a boundary off Kevin Laundon to set us on our way, but Martyn could do little about Roper's scorcher that crashed into his stumps. Adam Alger, kindly agreeing to reinforce our batting, fared little better as he was taken at slip in the same over. Neale and Gren continued to battle hard against some of the quickest bowling we've faced in some time, but Roper ended Gren's resistance in his final over as he was also taken at slip.

Brook struck in his first over as he bowled Chadders, but the Alfas opener's day was to get even better. First, Neale, looking to attack after 14 overs' stubborn resistance, was caught and bowled off a leading edge. The batsmen had crossed, and next ball Rob Jackson went for a big drive and was bowled. With the next ball, Chris Gould, batting with a finger injury he sustained while keeping wicket, was taken at slip. Brook had taken the first hat trick against the Allstars in our 14 year history - and his reward was to be removed from the attack. Richard Stephenson departed immediately after the drinks break, bowled by Metcalfe, and we were 34 for 8 and in danger of eclipsing our record lowest total.

A cheer went up as a wide took us past the critical 40 mark, but I didn't last much longer as Andy Dell hit my leg stump. Our second local ringer, Damian Taylor-Lock, finally gave us something to cheer about as he went for his shots, Vivek Seth keeping him company in the highest partnership of the innings. But it couldn't last, and Jack Perman ended the innings by bowling Vivek.

Against such overwhelming odds, we could still hold our heads high. We were eagerly awaiting our chance for revenge against Sporting Alfas' 2^nd XI on the Sunday, only for a spectacular thunderstorm to end the game with them 22-0 off seven overs. By the time the storm finished 90 minutes later, the playing surface was only fit for the ground's large (non-cricketing) duck population. Still, 1 draw and 1 loss on tour is only bettered by our triumph in France.

Man of the Match: Gren Thompson. An inspired second spell from the White Rose.

Champagne Moment (as voted in our end of tour dinner): It could only be Maxie's catch.

Baker Street Irregulars vs Allstars: Match Report

If there was one man to do it, it was Sir Viv.

Having given the rally cry, Allstars came from far and wide to join Sir Vivek Seth in a close fought, good natured match against the Baker Street Irregulars at the end of August that saw the Allstars take the spoils.

After a confusing start - where six cricket teams turned out to play on the two Ham playing ground cricket squares, close to Ham House - and after much debate which included telephoning the groundsmen (who did not seem that bothered that six teams had all booked the pitches), two teams had to relocate to a square on Ham Common - those being the Allstars and Irregulars.

Undaunted, the teams set about setting the boundary markers and removing a chain link and post marking the edge of the square.

Ground set, the Allstars took to the field as the Irregulars went into bat. (It was later discovered that Sir Viv had won the toss and decided to put the Irregulars into bat - much to the consternation of one of the founding fathers of the Allstars who shall
remain nameless but is the Match Manager for our game against New Barbarian Weasels).

Anyhow, Nick Chadwick and Ben Hampton set about their bowling game with skill, and wickets followed one after the other, Hampton bagging the greater share in the opening overs and at one point being on s hat-trick.

However, a short boundary and some good batting from the Irregular top order saw their tally steadily rise. It must be noted that the Allstars fielding although good, and dare I say superb at times, was, at others, woefully poor - and even downright lazy. Enough said.

Change of bowlers brought on Tony Grant who was nothing short of brilliant, bowling long and full down the off side. After seven overs, a mere eleven runs had been given and two wickets taken.

It was during the Irregulars innings that play was interrupted by a gentleman informing us that we were in fact playing on the wrong pitch - which would explain why there was a chain and posts around the square, and not because the council groundsman had forgotten to do his work.

After dialogue between an Irregular and the man from Ham (to be known as Mr Ham), we were informed that we were actually playing on the Ham and Petersham CC square - and not the council square as we had been originally told.

However, understanding we could play on, if we moved to another crease (which we duly did at the change of innings), the game continued.

Complimenting Grant was a variety of Allstar bowlers from the opposite end. Apart from the
wicket keeper all players had to bowl at least one over. James Morgan and Neale
Adams both picked up wickets. Pete Cresswell would have also picked up a wicket on his first ball having set a catching field, had only the Allstar fielder (a senior member of the Allstars who shall remain nameless but is Match Managing the Weasels game and has a strong association with the James Abrahams Trophy) not dropped a sitter that firstly went through a hole in his hands, then bounced off his chest, pushing him to the ground, and landing beside him.

Of note in the field were the Allstars keeper Jim 'The Glove' Scott who stepped up when volunteers were asked for - and had a superb game behind the stumps, and Ben Hampton who stopped a certain four with a high flying kick (receiving a warm round of
applause from the opposition as reward) and a magnificent caught and bowled
during his second spell.

After 35 overs and a fall of nine Irregular wickets, they had amassed a total of 220 and a fine tea followed.

Cresswell and Clarence Marshall opened the Allstars batting line up and went about their business with vigour - Cresswell knocking up a healthy 29 before being bowled.

James Morgan took up the baton and ably assisted Marshall who continued to find the boundary and crafty singles at every possible turn.

It must be noted that unlike the Allstars fielding, the Irregulars chased down every ball, and stopped the ball from going over the boundary rope at every possible chance. Top effort.

It was during the second innings that Mr Ham appeared - a bit like the shop keeper from Mr Benn - and again interrupted play. This time we found out that Ham and Petersham CC were the only ones permitted to play on the square and paid a hefty price to the council for the privilege. As such the Mr Ham would be informing the council and looking for compensation - £2000 for the day, which was a bit of a shock to both teams. Sir Viv had only asked for each Allstar player to bring £10 subs. ;-)

Our playing on the square was a genuine mistake and the reaction by Mr Ham was certainly not in the spirit of cricket.

Anyhow, when allowed to play on, Morgan was replaced by Felix Haddow-Allen who knew his job from the start - to get runs and not hang about. This he did with aplomb leaving a final over with a five run target to win the match. The first ball a wide, left a target of four that was achieved with the ball being hit over the boundary - quite rightly - by Marshall who had batted as Grant bowled, brilliantly.

Marshall knocked up 136 not out with focussed stroke play, and must be considered as a Man of the Match contender along with Grant or Hampton.

Well done Sir Viv and thanks to the Irregulars whose spirit led to a great game enjoyed by all....well almost however hammed up the proceedings were. Enough said.

Well, we came close but at the end of the day the victory cigars had to be returned to their boxes for another year.

Having won the toss we put the Gents of West London (GOWL) into bat and the opening bowlers of Hampton and Chadwick immediately went about their business with relish.

Chadwick was soon rewarded with his first wicket, followed by two more in subsequent overs. All three wicket balls beat the batsmen, homing in on the stumps beautifully. At the other end Hampton, although taking no wickets, kept the opposition’s run rate low with good accurate bowling.

New recruit Edwin Pillans - duly dubbed Edwin All-STARR (dot ball, what is it good for? absolutely nothing, say it again...) - took over from Hampton and marked his debut with a wicket with only his second delivery. The batsman launched the ball into the air and ‘Carry the Bat’ legend Pete Cresswell took a great catch to his left. It was Cresswell’s first catch for the Allstars.

Unbelievably, the usually dominant GOWL were on the ropes and the Allstars dared to dream - could it be our year, finally?

But Gents are no push-over, as Allstars' single victory over them in thirteen years shows, and their middle order steadied the GOWL ship. Cloete, who through some fine stroke play knocked up 100, was ably supported by Clark (58) and Patel (29).

Our fielding remained tight with good bowling spells by Seth (who took a wicket after his delivery was struck into the air and caught by Begley), and Thompson from the Vine Road end. It must be noted that Begley’s catch was all the more impressive as he was not the only one in the chase for the earth-bound ball - the other was the Colossus known as Cresswell. Fears for Begley’s demise were thwarted as Cresswell put on the air brakes as Begley nabbed the catch.

I came on as a third change and to my and everyone's surprise, took three wickets, including another catch on the boundary by ‘safe hands’ Begley.

Pillans - dot ball what is it good for? absolutely nothing...say it again - marked his debut with a second wicket (caught and bowled) late on.

Despite good bowling and fielding, the square (and constant change of balls through ones being lost and alternative ones found in the bushes and kit bags) provided an excellent batting wicket, and GOWL posted a target of 229, for the loss of nine wickets.

A fine Allstars tea provided the required refreshment for round two.

Knowing the need for an immediate impact, opener Begley set about knocking the ball around the park and with the introduction of MacDonald at number four, a great partnership began.

Together the pair punished loose balls, which landed either side of the boundary rope, and made many quick singles. The Allstars dream factory started whirring once again.

Begley posted a foundational 31 before being dismissed. Undeterred, MacDonald went on to form another partnership with Hampton. There was no let up - runs were needed and Hampton (25) and MacDonald obliged. Sam’s time at the crease was beautiful to behold and a final tally of 105 earned him the Allstars Man of the Match award.

However, sadly, it was not to be. An Allstars total of 206 for seven was not enough, but it has been noted that it is our hghest ever score against GOWL.

So close, but no cigar.

It was a day full of excitement and testament to the wonderful game of cricket. And if one thing can be taken from the match it is the Allstars have a great fighting spirit. Long may it continue. Well done.
