Where have all the US/Canada Manga/Anime Mags Gone?

More choices and more limitations.

I miss the 90s.

During those years, I had plenty of choices in Anime/Manga magazine titles, such as 'Animerica', & its sister, the manga-serial 'Animerica Extra'.
There was: 'Super Manga Blast', 'Anime Insider', 'NewType' (English version), 'Pulp', 'ProtoCulture', 'ShojoBeat' and 'YenPlus' (which now downgraded to a digital-only version) and finally, a magazine that Shall Not Be Named but used to have a consistent schedule, and did its readers a favor by cutting its cover price in half, but now, shoddy scheduling, limited distribution, and unstable customer service plagues it.
We were building a list of such titles that in at least a decade's time, we (like Rocky) 'Coulda been a contenda' to the Japanese, well, maybe not. They had a head start since the 50s to build their mountain empire of anime/manga magazines, but we in the U.S./Canada almost had a fighting chance to probably catch up!

Hmmm...Maybe not.

*Sigh* I MISS the 90s.

Great googly-moogly! I hate how women and young girls are portrayed in both classic and modern films.
It's unfortunate for me to say it, but the foreign movies and TV shows overseas seem to show a stronger, more resilient woman and girl than what's shown in the United States.

Take women like in K-Drama "My Lovely Sam-soon" (Eng title) or "My Name is Kim Sam-soon" (Trans Korean title). Sam-soon comes from our version of a blue-collar, single parent family (father died when she and her sister were young). She became a certified pastry chef in Europe but is hard-pressed to find employment in her native South Korea. After she finds work in a prestigious restaurant reluctantly-run (pardon alliteration) by a spoiled, bored wealthy scion, he and her come to blows because he doesn't know how to treat those poorer than him, and Sam-soon just can't stand her treatment from him.
Throughout the series, Sam-soon as no compunction to beat the living daylights out of this rich boy or the ex that keeps hounding and taunting her. She goes into people's faces when they openly insult her. The sheer fun of this series is watching how Sam-soon says to others who belittle her what a lot of us would love to say to those who treat us less than human.

Or the heroine in "The Whale Rider" or fantasy TV series filmed by New Zealand or the UK studios. These female characters, whether heroine, villainess, or even secondary, are often smart, loaded with common sense, and, when it calls for it, physically strong or strong in spirit.

Why are we still in the Stone Age of thinking everyone's a blonde and foolish, or a brunette who is conniving? And why only one or two featured races or one ethnic group?

Can I tell you something? I've seen more diversity in foreign films than I have seen in American films, and that's sad. Sad indeed.

It annoys me.
I try to show good manners, to act in the manner I've been taught, so I don't appear as if I came from under a rock or from a hole. Yet, friends and colleagues tell me that the world's changed and good manners are old hat.
Wait a second!
Aren't we the world?
And so, if the world is the problem, we are the problem that created this problem - of rudeness, disrespect, discourtesy, barbarism and savagery. If I'm told to keep up with the world, then I'm essentially being told to ACT as nasty, as rude and disgusting as the rest of it. So, in all, I'm basically being told to ADD TO THE PROBLEM. BE THE PROBLEM, NOT THE ANSWER.
To ignore my teachings. To not only stoop but lower and degrade myself to already abysmal standards and others' low expectations.
In essence, I must become the trash that others behave as.
What a lot of rubbish.

Up north, the crab apples are falling out of the trees. Local elk and moose come from miles to eat them. After a while, the crab apples on the ground begin to ferment. One moose ate and then decided to climb the tree for more. Animal rescuers thought the moose up in the tree was dead. Turns out he was drunk.

When people steal things: Like the dog in the manger (Aesop). Won't or can't use it, but will deny it to everyone else.
Like when I bought a paperback book of one of my favorite authors, and when I got up from where I sat, realized I had left the book. I turned back.
It was gone. A PAPERBACK? Really? It wasn't even a hardcover edition with signature!! Good thing my used bookstore had more than 1 copy of the edition, with same cover. Sheesh. All that trouble over one book.

Just read a post about redheads written by a redhead. And no, I don't mean the dye-from-a-bottle variety. Those are a dime-a-dozen as long as you buy it! I mean REAL redheads. I happen to like redheads. The fascination with their hair began as a literary trip for me - Pippi Longstocking, Madeleine, etc.. Even the sister in the 80s cartoon, The Littles!
Even had a best friend named Shawn in 5th grade who was a redhead. I've often had redhead classmates afterwards.
They have never liked their hair, but I do, and I would like to take the time to say that I was appalled to learn from this article attached to my post that we still have Stone Age hatred and prejudice towards reds. I don't get it! Aren't we supposed to be an enlightened society? Both on this part of the hemisphere and on the other? I don't get it! It's a genetic mutation! They're not going to bewitch you, or enchant you (except if you become enamored by it as I am). Redheaded people are regular people...We aren't regular if we happened to have a problem with it.
That's why I laugh at skeptics who claim if we just rid the world of religion, we would all get along. I'd like to point out that being a copper, auburn, red, strawberry-blond(e), etc. is not a religion, and yet, around the world, if blonds think they're being misunderstood, reds are being attacked and tormented 'til some have to sue coworkers who harass them about their hair! It's HAIR, people! But then again, I say to the skeptics who want to do away with religious beliefs for the betterment of society: wrap your head around THIS issue. There are human beings out there that, no matter what, will have a problem with someone who happens to be different from them, for whatever reason. But oftentimes, it's not even something as highfaluting as ideological differences, or cultural dissimilarities...Oftentimes, it's something as stupid, childish, and reckless as someone's skin or hair color.
