FUNimation Entertainment has made a rather good habit of announcing a number of title acquisitions in the early months of the calendar year. As for what early 2011 has to offer, FUNimation took to their industry panel at Anime Detour 2011 (Bloomington, MN) in addition to a few other methods for noting their newest acquisitions. FUNimation has added four anime titles of note to their library, including news stretching from late February to the present. Street Fighter X Tekken Roster

Last year Capcom and Namco jointly announced a pair of crossover fighters involving the two companies flagship characters. Capcom has finally shown off their end of the title fight with Street Fighter X Tekken (the "X" is pronounced "cross"). While Capcom isn't spilling the full character roster beans just yet, they've announced the first 10 characters, which we've included below. The ‘Otaku’ Take Hoboken, Again

A typical-looking female Stevens student in leggings and a ponytail walked hurriedly by, murmuring into her cell phone: “Oh God, they’re everywhere.” She was, of course, referring to the throngs of anime and gaming fans dressed up in elaborate costumes that were taking over Hoboken for the fourth annual Castle Point Anime Convention. And she looked pretty out of place in her weird regular clothes by comparison. The convention, helmed by Stevens Institute’s anime club, is a day-long celebration of Japanese animation, videogames, culture, and well, awesome costumes. It began four years ago by former members of the anime club, who decided on a whim to make up a new convention. Singapore, Cosplaying with a heart

This year’s event is the third, and the most massive, installment of the Start-of-Year Cosplay event in Singapore, S.O.Y.C., to date. “During the first S.O.Y, the targeted number of participants was only 400 to 500 people. This time, we are targeting around 3,000 people,” event organiser Julia Huang, 19, said. As the number of participants grew over the years, so did the need for a larger venue. The organizers, Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Japanese Tsubasa Club, may have started out at the small holding area outside Lecture Theatre 26 in 2007, but soon expanded to the basement of the Convention Centre, before booking the Convention Centre itself. Even while fun was topmost on everyone’s mind, the event also supported the Singapore Red Cross Society‘s appeal for donations in the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami Tōhoku, which has killed tens of thousands of civilians off the east coast of Japan. Aniplex handling Persona 4 anime adaptation

Atlus RPG Persona 4 is getting an animated adaptation thanks in part to Japanese production company Aniplex. The show will be directed by Seiji Kishi, known for his work on other anime series such as Angel Beats! and My Bride is a Mermaid. Aniplex has signed on Persona 4's voice actors to reprise the roles of Yosuke, Chie, Yukiko, and Yu (the protagonist) for the show. BioWare and FUNimation announced today an agreement to create an anime feature film adapted from one of the video game industry’s most revered franchises, Mass Effect. Tokyo-based anime and international feature film production company T.O Entertainment, Inc. has signed on as a co-producer on the video. It's OK to like Anime

I've got to get something off my chest. I'm going to take a deep breath ... OK, that's better. And now I'm finally going to admit to myself, and to all you City Paper readers, that yes, I like anime. Wow. That feels really good. See, I grew up in the taboo time of anime, the stuff of Pokemon cards and Dragonball Z. The kids who liked it were the weird ones with Japan fetishes, pre-teens to whom animated sexual innuendo was very important. I heard it was smutty and violent, and so I was mostly turned off to it. Except for Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon was perfect. In high school, it was socially acceptable to watch Adult Swim up to a certain hour. Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021, fine. Cowboy Bebop ... well, then you're entering a gray area. I didn't have cable growing up — still don't — so I didn't watch much Cartoon Network. On one family trip, I caught an episode of FLCL and instantly, and guiltily, found it fascinating. It's been a long time since then, but I remember a badass girl with a bass guitar and a yellow Vespa, and aliens or robots or some other kind of evildoers trying to destroy the world. I kind of liked it. But then we went home. As I got older, and as we moved further and further away from the Pikachu era, the tide was starting to turn. Films like Spirited Away and Paprika were receiving critical acclaim and, in the former's case, even an Academy Award. I still wasn't completely sold. Once, in college, I walked in on my roommate/BFF Brian watching Perfect Blue, a feature-length anime film about a young actress who gets raped and you can't tell if it's real or if it's a part of her job or if it's all in her head.
