This time, we are targeting around 3,000 people,” event organiser Julia Huang, 19, said. As the number of participants grew over the years, so did the need for a larger venue. The organizers, Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Japanese Tsubasa Club, may have started out at the small holding area outside Lecture Theatre 26 in 2007, but soon expanded to the basement of the Convention Centre, before booking the Convention Centre itself. Even while fun was topmost on everyone’s mind, the event also supported the Singapore Red Cross Society‘s appeal for donations in the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami Tōhoku, which has killed tens of thousands of civilians off the east coast of Japan. Across these three days Sakura-Con will be taking place at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, and thousands of anime fans will be descending on the Pacific Northwest’s oldest and biggest anime convention. This year will also see Sakura-Con raising money for relief in disaster-stricken Japan, and members will be given opportunities to donate to the relief effort through out the weekend. Sakura-Con has joined Seattle Japan Relief, a collaboration of Japanese American and Japan related cultural, educational and civic organizations standing together to promote relief and recovery following the devastating earthquakes and tsunamis. Seattle has long enjoyed a strong connection with Japan – from Nintendo’s presence in the region to Ichiro and the Seattle Mariners – and this is the perfect time to lend your support to the relief efforts. Tokyo-based anime and international feature film production company T.O Entertainment, Inc. has signed on as a co-producer on the video. Based on the Mass Effect universe, the anime video will tell the tale of an epic science fiction adventure set in a vast universe filled with dangerous alien life and mysterious, uncharted planets. Casey Hudson of BioWare, executive producer of the Mass Effect series, will serve as executive producer on the film, along with FUNimation President and CEO Gen [frick]unaga and Director of Original Entertainment Chris Moujaes and T.O Entertainment’s CEO Takeichi Honda and Yui Shibata. “Over the last few years, we have revealed different pieces of the Mass Effect world through different media. Extending the story through an anime medium is another amazing opportunity for us,” said Casey Hudson, Executive Producer for the Mass Effect series. “Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we will bring this rich universe to life with the utmost quality and the same attention to detail that the Mass Effect games are known for.” Read more: http://www.comicbookmovie.com

However, those are the best things about it for cosplayers, the re-creators of elaborate, often gravity-defying costumes drawn from cartoons, comics and video games. The region's best cosplayers will this weekend storm out of the geek wardrobe for the trans-Tasman Cosplay Cup, part of the Armageddon convention at TSB Arena. Wellington graphic designer Kathy Smythe, who won the regional title at last year's event with a Warhammer 40K Imperial Commissar uniform, said anything went in the pop-culture grab-bag of cosplay. I'm going to take a deep breath ... OK, that's better. And now I'm finally going to admit to myself, and to all you City Paper readers, that yes, I like anime. Wow. That feels really good. See, I grew up in the taboo time of anime, the stuff of Pokemon cards and Dragonball Z. The kids who liked it were the weird ones with Japan fetishes, pre-teens to whom animated sexual innuendo was very important. I heard it was smutty and violent, and so I was mostly turned off to it. Except for Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon was perfect. In high school, it was socially acceptable to watch Adult Swim up to a certain hour. Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Sealab 2021, fine. Cowboy Bebop ... well, then you're entering a gray area. I didn't have cable growing up — still don't — so I didn't watch much Cartoon Network. On one family trip, I caught an episode of FLCL and instantly, and guiltily, found it fascinating. It's been a long time since then, but I remember a badass girl with a bass guitar and a yellow Vespa, and aliens or robots or some other kind of evildoers trying to destroy the world. I kind of liked it. But then we went home. As I got older, and as we moved further and further away from the Pikachu era, the tide was starting to turn. Films like Spirited Away and Paprika were receiving critical acclaim and, in the former's case, even an Academy Award. I still wasn't completely sold. Once, in college, I walked in on my roommate/BFF Brian watching Perfect Blue, a feature-length anime film about a young actress who gets raped and you can't tell if it's real or if it's a part of her job or if it's all in her head. I found what little I watched from the doorway of our kitchen to be very unpleasant.
