Review by IPaintMyMind

Popular non-profit web magazine and art advocates, IPaintMyMind, posted a stellar review of O Sad And Future Human. Check it out the original post or read it below.

The Answer Team opens "Sad and Future Human" as aptly as the title could ever suggest, as feedback and dissonance give way to melody, opening the doors on what's to come. This album does indeed feel like a sober love letter to a future being. As far as the music, the atmospheric aspect to their instrumental attack creates an impressive wall of sound. They're rock format is supplemented by orchestral overtones that build into walls of sound, and later descend, relying on various rhythms that end up pulling the motion in various interesting directions. "Bedroom Anthropologist" capitalizes on a stellar sample which gives the record its title, and which talks about a tape recorder being found inside a white tree in Jakarta. (We know, that alone is enough for you to try this record on for size.) The sample gives the album the only vocabulary it needs, as the ideas inspired fit perfectly with the evolving destruction brought to life by the sum of this bands' parts. "Breakfast for Dinner" further enhances the 'build, destroy, rebuild' mode the band seems to perfect, and "Does This Shirt Make Me Look Dead" provides one of the more memorable melodies on the record, being deftly balanced with TAT's trademark guitar-driven sonic edifices.

This Omaha, NE based post-rock outfit on Imagine It Records is talented, has vision, and makes music that will surely spawn thoughts between the ears that take it on.

The Answer Team = really good music.

Review by EverythingIsChemical.com

Popular music blog, EverythingIsChemical.com, just posted this glowing review about O Sad And Future Human.

7.5 out of 10

Omaha Nebraska has been a hotbed of musical activity dating back as far as the 1920's. Jazz clubs and underground nightspots were once home to some of the most prominent staples in Jazz, Blues and Swing history. There has been a notable music scene to be found in Omaha at any point in time ever since. It wasn't until the early 1990's that Omaha began it's gradual reign as one of the biggest independent music scenes in the Midwest. The Answer Team is certainly helping to fuel this fire with their debut album, "O Sad And Future Human".

Formed in 2006, Thomas McCauley and Brandon Bone started jamming together in college, and thus began a foundation that would eventually evolve into The Answer Team. After a few years of "revolving door" band members and a brief stint with vocals, their niche was found with the help of now permanent fixtures, Jason Bejot and Dustin Treinen. This finely tuned niche I speak of can be summed up by just simply calling them an instrumental Post Rock band, but this would be an understatement, and quite frankly, an insult to the band itself. The album opener, "Where's The Sun" is a gorgeous yet deceptive tune, it begins with a bit of feedback and distorted chords sugarcoated with light, melodic anticipation; all the makings of a build-up that begs for an explosion of angst-ridden vocals and rapid guitar riffs. Fortunately, it takes a refreshing detour into a beautiful, arpeggio-rich frolic. It's almost like a lone flower growing out of a crack in the middle of a gritty city sidewalk. This sets the tone for the whole album. On "Does This Shirt Make Me Look Dead?", uplifting layers of violin and a defiant, thunderous rhythm make this track as powerful as it is heart wrenching. The occasional spoken word interlude and a captivating solo piano track serve as palate cleansers for the ears and mind. There are no shortages of gems here.

"O Sad And Future Human" paints an honest and extremely well structured portrait of a journey through the emotional spectrum. Whether you're an avid Post Rock lover or an occasional visitor of the genre who feels that a little goes a long way, there is something here for you. This is a strong debut by a group who I hope will continue to produce beautiful music for years to come. For fans of Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, Pelican, This Will Destroy You and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Standout tracks: Where's The Sun, Does This Shirt Make Me Look Dead?, A Hero's Aftermath, A New Look At Marilyn Monroe

Album release and great press

In the wee hours yesterday morning we released the first digital copies of O Sad and Future Human and the physical copies are heading out the door today. That's right, our debut album is out in the wild! You can order it directly from us through our bandcamp store or you can find it just about everywhere on the internet: iTunes, Spotify, Amazon, Rhapsody... just to mention a few.

The post-rock community has already started to show their appreciation. For instance, the post-rock Facebook fan page posted a YouTube rip of Does This Shirt Make Me Look Dead? early this morning and has been getting some really amazing and humbling feedback. Thanks guys!

On top of that, with so much community anticipation surrounding this release, we've been busy with interviews and photo shoots. Not bad for four working stiffs with a penchant for making beautiful music.

The inaugural Red Sky Music Festival is aiming to be one of Nebraska's biggest musical events. They're bringing in superstar talent to kick it off with a bang; Journey, Charlie Daniels Band, Kid Rock, George Clinton and 311 just to name a few. It's expected that 20,000 people will be in attendance... and we get the honor of performing.

That's right, your hometown post-rockers have the chance to take the stage along-side some of the artists they grew up with. It's a big honor and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We're hitting the stage on Wednesday, July 20th at 1:15PM on the C Stage just moments before Tonic.

Can't wait to see you there cheering us on!

We'll be hitting Barley Street Taverns stage on Saturday July 9th at 12:35AM. Playing this also gives us a chance to perform at the super hip MAHA Music Festival in August.

Rock out and vote for us!

A Tour is a Tour is a Tour is a Tour

On February 18, the Answer Team embarked on its first tour of 2011, hitting Lawrence, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; Dubuque, Iowa; and Chicago, Illinois. Along the way Jason, Tom, Brandon, and Dustin learned a lot about one another—and were absolutely disgusted. Aside from that, everything was peaches, peaches I tell ya!

First stop: Lawrence, Kansas, the home of basketball, which is not a monster made out of a basket but a game played with two opposing teams of five players per team, each trying to sail an orange bouncing ball through the opposing team’s hoop, which comprises a medium-sized net attached to a metal rim, itself attached to a large, breakable square of glass called a “backboard.” The game is popular in Finland.

In Lawrence, the band rocked the legendary Replay Lounge. A small, enthusiastic crowd gathered a little ways back from the stage (we are very loud) and nodded their heads at regular intervals, as if saying “yes” over and over to the band. When the room stopped shaking, everyone was still alive, their lives pleasantly altered forever. Music is good.

Second stop: Kansas City, Missouri. The “Show Me” state (show you what, exactly?) welcomed the band with a billboard along the interstate that said, in stark white letters, “Narcissist.” Well, when you put it that way…Anyway, the Answer Team reunited with its friends in Auternus and rocked The Brick, which has been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives, a popular Finnish TV show.

Third stop: Dubuque, Iowa, possibly the pleasantest surprise of the tour. Did you know Dubuque was the first city settled in Iowa territory? And that it was incorporated in 1833, long before any of our moms were even born?!! In Dubuque, the band played The Busted Lift, a 150 year-old bar in the basement of a fancy restaurant. The walls were built of stacked stone and made at least one band member (the stupidest one) miss Ireland a lot, because it reminded him or her of a cozy, subterranean Irish public house. Those stone walls came in handy; the extremely loud mix just bathed everyone in beautiful sounds. Something about the Dubuque air, the free beer, the talented opening band Mondo Drag, and the great crowd made for a memorable show: Tom jumped off the wall; Dustin attracted everyone in the room (sexually); and Brandon and Jason may have saved the world. Only time and history books will tell.

Fourth (and final) stop: the great Chicago, Illinois. For such a small town, Chicago sure has a lot going on. Skyscrapers, ice skating, public transportation, sushi, public restrooms, large food, museums, shopping districts, and so on greeted the band with open and figurative arms. The band played Reggie’s Music Joint, a cool place in the south loop whose awning proclaimed, “We’re Not Happy Until You’re Not Happy.” Unexpectedly, the band got to open for last-minute addition Henry Cluney, guitarist from the legendary Stiff Little Fingers. It was an incredible end to an incredible tour.

The final day was bittersweet. The Des Moines show fell through, so the band packed it in and drove all the way to Omaha, stopping only a few times to yell at Jason for spilling coffee in the van. As evening wore on, the band made friends with the fact that the tour had ended: gone the infinite freedom of the road, gone the giddiness of playing music every night to strangers who become friends, hello work and school. On the plus side, hello friends and lovers (and crackers and snacks)!

I don’t know how to stop writing. So I’ll say a few more important things.

Thank you, sincerely, to all the bands, promoters, and club owners who made these shows possible, and thank you to everyone who came out to see us! We had a fabulous time and can’t wait to get back on the road.

Thanks especially to all our friends and family for giving us a place to stay, coming to see us play, and hanging out with us even though we smell bad! We couldn’t do what we love to do without your love, understanding, and support! A million thanks and see you soon!

The album is done. Some thanks are in order.

Some acknowledgements are in order. First, to the extremely talented musicians who lent their musical minds to our project, violinist Kaitlyn Filippini and pianist Chelsie Hartness, we owe a resounding thank you! We feel incredibly grateful to have such skilled and creative friends offer their gifts so that our album could be that much better. Second, to all the engineers who helped us get these songs from transient sounds to tangible ones (and zeros): thank you. Joel Petersen of Enamel, AJ Mogis of ARC, and Matt Tobias of Empty House all devoted more energy and vision than we ever could have asked for. Third, we owe another round of thanks to AJ Mogis for mixing the whole album -- he spent hours upon hours at the board making sure everything sounded great. Fourth, to the incredibly talented, focused and hardworking Doug Van Sloun at Focus Mastering for mastering our CD: thanks, man! Fifth, to our good friend John Treinen for spending countless hours on our album artwork -- we're flattered beyond words that his personal response to our music was to spend vast swaths of his free time making art to complement ours. And thanks to John's dad for all his beautiful script -- sorry about the cramped hand.
Finally, to all of you who can't wait to hear our album, we thank you for your love and support and for waiting a little longer so we can shop it around to labels. As a token of our gratitude, we are offering a free download of one of our songs to all our Facebook fans starting next week.
It's been a long road, and we love it. We humbly hope for years of music-making to come.

Finished recording. Commence mixing!

What a weekend. On Friday, The Answer Team finished up the instrumentation for our debut full-length album at Empty House studios in Omaha. Violinist Kaitlyn Filippini laid down strings to lend a soaring lyricism to a few songs, and pianist Chelsie Hartness recorded some darkly beautiful melodies on an old upright piano in engineer Matt Tobias's basement. Kudos to those girls, especially to Chelsie, who had never recorded before and was kind of nervous, though she totally knocked it out of the park. We stayed late into the night, tired as shit, and recorded some of guitarist Tom McCauley's poetry. Both Tom and Chelsie, who's kind of a famous actress (check out the movie Up in the Air), did their best not to sound like a pair of pretentious drama queens as they read Mr. McCauley's slyly haunting lines. We think they succeeded.

Now, back at ARC Studios, the band is watching AJ Mogis work his magic mixing the album. Guy's no greenhorn, that's for sure.

Chelsie nails it!
