لاک ڑاون کب ختم ہوگا؟

یہ 14 اپریل کے بعد نرم ہونا شروع ہوجاے گا اور آہستہ آہستہ ختم ہوجاے گا. بس سکول کالجز، یونیورسٹی اور بڑے دفتر نہیں کھولے گے. مارکیٹ بھی جلد بند کردی جاے گی.

ہمیں بھوک اور بیماری میں سے ایک کا فیصلہ کرنا ہوگا. حکومت نے بیمار قبول کرنے کا فیصلہ کر لیا ہے. وزیراعظم سمجھتے ہیں ہم ساری آبادی کو گھر بٹھا کر کھانا نہیں کھلا سکتے. اس لیے ملک کھول دے جو بیمار ہوتے ہیں ان کو ہونے دے. باقی کو کام کرنے سے.

لیکن ہمارے پاس دوسرا آپشن بھی تو موجود نہیں ہے. لہٰذا یہ سوچ ہے کہ جو مرتا ہے اسے مرنے دے باقی کو بچا لیں، لوگ بیمار ہو کر اور مرمر کر خود سمجھدار ہوجاے گے. اور خود ہی پرہیز شروع کر دے گے.

حکومت کی پالیسی کلیر ہے یہ زیادی دیر تک ملک بند نہیں کر سکتی یہ آہستہ آہستہ لاک ڑاؤن کھول دے گی. عوام چند دنوں میں گلیوں، بازاروں اور دفتروں میں نظر آے گی. یہ آزادی ملک میں خوف ناک تباہی لیکر آئے گی. اگر ہم آج اگر ٹیسٹ کرنا شروع کر دے تو ملک میں 15٪ لوگ اس بیماری کا شکار ہوگے. اور یہ تعداد لاک ڑاؤن کھلنے کے بعد بہت زیادہ بڑھ جاے گی. اگر قدرت نے اس دوران مہربانی فرما دی یا پھر امریکہ اور یورپ نے اس وائرس کا حل تلاش کرلیا تو ہم بچ جائیں گے ورنہ ہمیں زہنی طور پر تباہی کے لیے تیار ہوجانا چاے.

ہرگز نہیں ہم دنیا کی دلچسپ ترین قوم ہیں ہم خود کو بہادر ثابت کرنے کے لیے گلیوں میں کھڑے ہو کر کے کرونا کو آواز دے رہے ہوتے ہیں. ہم ایسے لوگ ہیں اگر پتہ چل جاے کی حکومت باہر نکلنے والے کو گولی مار دے گی تو ہم یہ چیک کرنے کے لیے کی واقع حکومت گولی مار دیتء ہے ہم باہر نکل آئے گے. یہ ہماری زہنی حالت ہے اور اس زہنی حالت میں حکومت لاک ڑاؤن ختم کرنا چاہتی ہے. یہ ملک کھول رہی ہے. اللہ خیر کرے ہمارے آنے والے دن خیریت کے ساتھ طلوع ہوتے نظر نہیں آرے. کیوں کہ ہم لوگ جب تک مر نا جائیں ہمیں اس وقت تک موت کا یقین نہیں ہوتا.

Importance of cotton

Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber that grows in a boll, or protective case, around the seeds of the cotton plants of the genus Gossypium in the mallow family Malvaceae. The fiber is almost pure cellulose. Under natural conditions, the cotton bolls will increase the dispersal of the seeds.

The plant is a shrub native to tropical and subtropical regions around the world, including the Americas, Africa, Egypt and India. The greatest diversity of wild cotton species is found in Mexico, followed by Australia and Africa. Cotton was independently domesticated in the

Old and New Worlds.

The fiber is most often spun into yarn or thread and used to make a soft, breathable textile. The use of cotton for fabric is known to date to prehistoric times; fragments of cotton fabric dated to the fifth millennium BC have been found in the Indus Valley Civilization. Although cultivated since antiquity, it was the invention of the cotton gin that lowered the cost of production that led to its widespread use, and it is the most widely used natural fiber cloth in clothing today.

Current estimates for world production are about 25 million tonnes or 110 million bales annually, accounting for 2.5% of the world's arable land. China is the world's largest producer of cotton, but most of this is used domestically. The United States has been the largest exporter for many years. In the United States, cotton is usually measured in bales, which measure approximately 0.48 cubic meters (17 cubic feet) and weigh 226.8 kilograms (500 pounds.

Cotton leaf curl virus disease:

Cotton is one of the most important crops of Pakistan, accounting for over 60% of foreign exchange earnings. The present epidemic of cotton leaf curl disease (CLCuD) originated in the Punjab region near the city of Multan and was first reported in 1985, although it was noted in this region as early as 1967. By the early 1990s, CLCuD had become the major limitation to cotton production in Pakistan and it has now spread into India and, more recently, south and west into other provinces of Pakistan. The very characteristic symptoms include leaf curling, darkened veins, vein swelling and enations that frequently develop into cup-shaped, leaf-like structures on the undersides of leaves. Identification of the vector of CLCuD as the whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) quickly led to the suggestion that the causative agent of the disease is a geminivirus. Researchers soon confirmed the presence of such a virus that is currently ascribed to the genus Begomovirus of the family Geminiviridae, However, in 1999, the aetiology of the disease was shown to be more complex than was originally assumed. Despite the identification of both a begomovirus and a so-called nanovirus-like component, the precise casual agents remain uncertain.

Symptoms

Begomovirusll Begomovirus species causing cotton leaf curl disease have geminate particles, approximately 18-20 nm in diameter and 30 nm long and a circular, single-stranded DNA genome. All except Cotton leaf crumple virus have a monopartite genome, with all viral products required for replication, systemic movement and whitefly transmission encoded on a single DNA component of c. 2.75 kB (DNA A). The genome of CLCrV is bipartite. Two smaller, circular, single-stranded DNA molecules, named DNA 1 and DNA β, are associated with a range of monopartite begomoviruses from the Old World including the cotton leaf curl viruses.

These molecules are regarded as satellite molecules as they depend on the helper begomovirus to support one or more stages of their infection cycle (movement and insect transmission for both molecules and, additionally, replication in the case of DNA β). DNA β is symptom-modulating and typical cotton leaf curl disease symptoms only develop when this molecule is present: in the absence of DNA β, the concentration of viral DNA (DNA A) is low and the symptoms of infection very mild. DNA β has a single open reading frame (βC1 ORF), which encodes a suppressor of RNA silencing. DNA 1 is homologous to the DNA-R component of the nanoviruses and encodes a master replication initiator (M-Rep) protein but its presence does not alter symptom expression.

Prevention and control:

I. Use resistant or tolerant cultivars.
II. Protect seedlings from whiteflies.
III. Use only good seeds and healthy transplants.
IV. Control whiteflies.
V. Immediately remove infected-looking plants and bury them.
VI. Control weeds.
VII. Do not plant cotton near tomato and/or other crops susceptible to whiteflies or vice.
VIII. Use acephate-imidacloprid at 50% - 1.8% respectively, at every seven days.
IX. Plow-under all plant debris after harvest or burn them when possible.
X. Practice crop rotation by planting crops that are not susceptible to whitefly.

DOMESTICATION / HISTORY OF LIVESTOCK

The domestication of livestock was a great success of man in controlling over his environment. Domestication of food producing animal was the great source protein for him and these animals were also the consumer of that food which were useless for men. These animals converted those useless foods in to useful products for men. The domestication of’ some animals like horse bull also provided the speed and power to men.

1. The goats were probably domesticated 8000-9000 years ago, and cattle, sheep sometime thereafter.

From these primary centers of’ domestication, the village farming and raring of basic food producing animals spread in all direction of’ the world. In Egypt. Baluchistan, the Indus valley and almost in China or at least in Northern China, village-farming life began later. Pakistan is the lucky country in reference of’ domestication of livestock; the best cattle species Bos indicus found in sub-continent which is commonly known as Zebu or Hump cattle.

Importance of Horticulture Crops in Daily Life of Human Beings

Introduction:

Pakistan is one of the few countries of the world, where a variety of fruits are grown in cool temperate climate such as apples, pears, plums, cherries, and those grown in the warm temperate climate are apricots, figs, grapes, pomegranates, melons and the rest in the tropical and sub-tropical climate like bananas, mangoes, dates, guava and citrus fruits, which are available throughout the year. While the fruits grown in temperate climate are produced in Baluchistan and NWFP, tropical and subtropical fruits are mostly grown in Punjab and Sindh. The various varieties of fruits are grown over an area of about 8.04 million hectors. The annual production of fruits in Pakistan is estimated at around 6.57 million tonnes, of which only 674 thousand tones were exported in 2015-16.

In 2015-16 overall fruit export has witnessed a steady growth. More than 29 types of fruits and 33 types of vegetables are produced in the country throughout the year. The highest production have reached i.e Citrus fruit & Mango 2.3 and 1.3 million tons, the largest fruit crop group by volume and are major export revenue earner. According to latest figures Pakistan exported 674 thousand tons of fruits, vegetables 692.2 thousand tons and condiments 20.5 thousand tons in FY 2015-16.

Floriculture:

Pakistan is a country of small farming households, where, floriculture is the best option of enhancing the income of the under privileged. Introduction to the floriculture crop could be an important intervention in this regard where the farmer can earn much more by exploiting available natural resources more efficiently. We have favorable climate and cheap labor for growing these crops whereas they need much less land and water for production. These crops also give the premium prices almost round the year and there is no need to wait for a long time as in the case of other routine crops. Net profit against the investment is much higher for these crops compared with others conventional crops. The products are in high demand all over the world. But in Pakistan, floriculture is in its embryonic stage.

Exportable cut Flowers:

Rose, Carnation, Statice, Gypsophila, Gerbera, Anthumrium, Sanpdragon, Marigold, gladiolus, Narcissus, Freezia, Tuberose and lily.For the exports of flowers, Pakistan is updating technology but it still needs to look at alternatives to the country’s-old growing and exporting methods. Reshipment checking is a vital part of ensuring rotting perishable items sent abroad.

For Human Nutrition:

From human nutrition point of view horticulture is most important to our daily living. Many of the horticulture crops and their products find place in our meals and diet. Human body requires vitamins, minerals, proteins, energy etc. for its health. All these are supplied by horticultural crops. Fruits and vegetables are the chief sources of vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins etc. Fruits and vegetables are recognized as protective foods as they are necessary for the maintenance of human health.

Vitamins:

These are the important constituents of fruits and vegetables and are indispensable part of human diet. Although required in very minute quantities, they are absolutely essential for the maintenance of health. The deficiency of any vitamin from the diet for considerable period may lead to diseased state or disorder conditions. Fruits and vegetables supply several vitamins.

Calcium:

It is essential for development of bones regulation of heartbeat, controlling blood clots.

These are required for controlling several metabolic activities in the body.

HORTICULTURAL ASPECTS OF ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES IN URBANIZED SOCIETY:

The history of cultivation and horticulture shows that neither horticulture nor agriculture has always acted as an appropriate model for caring for the earth. Indeed, the growth of agriculture, bringing with it the growth of settlement and urbanization, has unfortunately in the past been associated with environmental transformation and degradation which have become pressing problems of today and the future. However, valuable lessons have been learned during that long history of cultivation, of both broad-acres and the garden. These lessons, together with the ecological studies that have leant so much on the methods developed in the older plant sciences, can now be applied to solving many of the environmental problems of modern urbanized society. The garden can serve as a model of the manner in which we should be caring for the planet. Plants in urban areas are important in ameliorating features or the environment such as temperature, noise and pollution, just as they maintain the balance of life for this earth. Sustainable residential landscape management programs that address the issues of cost/benefit (the economic, environmental and personal cost vs. the economic, environmental, physiological and social benefit) can be used to educate the public regarding world environmental issues in a setting that is local and directly relevant to people.

Exports of vegetables, fruits and the Economy:

Agriculture being the largest sector of Pakistan can help improve trade balance of payment. It’s a large sector and requires to be analyzed sectors wise especially few less touched areas. Therefore I have chosen fruits and vegetables sector.

Horticulture market: There is a large horticulture export market and Pakistan though an agricultural economy is only marginally present in this market. The size of the global horticulture market was worth $77 billion in 1998.

Out of a total world horticulture import market of $77 billion in 1998, the fruit and vegetable segments constituted a $60 billion market while fruit and vegetable juices contributed $6 billion. Cut flowers market accounted for $5 billion; bulbs contributed $4 billion while spices had a share of $2 billion.

Pakistani fruit and vegetables are being demanded in almost all over the world. Presently Pakistan is exporting fruits and vegetables to the USA, the Europe, Middle East, Far East, India and Sri Lanka. Mango, kino, apple, dates, pine nuts, oranges and guava are few well exported fruits and among vegetables are potato, onion, mushroom, garlic, chilly etc. It is observed by looking at the data, Pakistan is heavily relying on one market for each item. For example, Dubai is the biggest market for Pakistani Mango following England and Saudi Arabia. Sri Lanka is the only biggest market for Pakistani fresh apple. In such situation, the buyer dictates his terms. There is a need to explore new markets for Pakistani fruits and vegetables to gain good prices. The Export Promotion Bureau is striving hard to explore new markets and assist interested exporters to increase exports.

Kitchen Gardening:

Pakistan is blessed with a variety of climatic and geographic regimes, which create diversified agro-ecological conditions suitable for growing almost all kinds of vegetables. The total crop area of Pakistan is about 22.94 million hectares. Out of which vegetables and condiments are grown on 0.35 and 0.18 million hectares, respectively which is about 2.30 % of total crop area. Punjab contributes its share in area by 52 %, Sindh 26.15 %, KPK 10.85 % and Balochistan 11 % of the total area under vegetable crops.

Pakistan has the world's sixth largest population; the estimation for 2007 is over 169 million inhabitants, and by the next decade the population is expected to exceed 176 million. This will lead to higher demand for food and agricultural products. Also, 24 percent of the population in the country is undernourished and the number has increased rapidly in recent years, this situation demands increase in productivity per unit area with good quality. Household gardening has a vast potential for addressing the food and health of the urban and peri-urban population. The obvious advantages associated with household gardening, such as pesticide free produce and availability at the doorstep on one side and on the other hand, vegetable and herbs have high nutritional values. If these are grown, households could be able to get balanced diet which mainly contributes to the healthy society.

Horticulture Role in Aesthetic Value.

The aesthetic use of plants is a unique feature of horticulture which is also distinguishing it from other agricultural activities. The need to bring the attention of people and governments to the importance of maintaining the biodiversity of planet Earth and also ensuring that the on-coming generations inherit a cleaner, greener, more ecologically sustainable world cannot be overemphasized, and horticulturist have worked towards this goal by enhancing the beauty and quality of our surroundings. The urbanized environment, where 95 % of the world population lives, is a place plagued with excessive traffic, air and water pollution and the lack of open space, have destroyed natural diversity and beauty and thus, demand for massive increase in greenery and beautification for environmental restoration and protection. The functional and aesthetic interaction of people, building and site, using plants and space as its main tools is very important in solving environmental problems. In Nigeria for example the role of horticulture as a feasible means of improving urban

green space, aesthetics and improvement of the built environment can be attested to through the growth of the green industry, persistent campaigns for more green spaces in the built environment and desire of the concerned government and public for developing sustainable landscapes that: beautify the environment; increase the diversity of plant and animal species; conserve water; reduce runoff and generally enrich the environment and people’s lives. This increased interest in green spaces in modern cities ensured that government and urban planners now not only perceive horticulture as a means to urban development and aesthetics of the environment, but as one of the strategies to achieving green revolution in man’s environment, and in urban centres. Hence, there is a need for policies that supports horticulture as a tool in city building and development. This paper therefore examined the significance of horticulture in environmental aesthetics and management of the landscape.

OLD Culture

The event, arranged by UAF in collaboration with Agri Tourism Corporation, comprised cultural foods, agri stalls and display of the rural folk in order to attract the people towards our rich culture and traditions. The mela remained a center for attractions for locals who thronged the university to have the delight of the colors of rural life and to get refuge from monotonous routine.

UAF Vice Chancellor Dr Zafar Iqbal Randhawa flanked by Director Farm Dr Shahid Afzaal Gill, Incharge UAF Books and Magazine Dr Shahazad Basra and Senior Tutor Dr Athar Javed inaugurated the mela. The Vice Chancellor said that agriculture was the backbone of our economy, contributing 20 percent to our economy. He said that after Green revolution, we overcome the hunger issue. But, excessive usage of Genetically Modified Crops provoked the issue of malnutrition.

He showed his concerns that the agricultural import bill had risen to billions of rupees. He said that university scientists had capacity to work the issue to reduce the import bill.

He said that the university was used to hold such event to promote our culture, tradition and food etc. He said that such infotainment platform provided an opportunity to learn in entertaining way. He urged the youngsters to minimize uses of the gadgets in their free time and to spend time with elders, parents so that they can learn from their experiences.

He said that UAF management will disburse 800 headscarves among the females on Feb 14 as Sister Day in order to promote eastern culture. Dispelling misconception about the Sister Day, he said that university did not compel anyone to wear headscarves or celebrate Sisters’ Day. It is students’ choice whatever they like. He said that headscarves will be distributed by university management.

He said the concept of dupatta was a beautiful manifestation of culture for women in eastern societies. Our purpose is to empower our women and ensure a congenial environment for females in our institutions so that they can freely utilize their capabilities and life.

Keep in mind that fruit juices are almost as bad as soda in this regard. They contain just as much sugar, and the small amounts of antioxidants do NOT negate the harmful effects of the sugar .

They are also low in fiber, protein and micronutrients (empty calories), but high in unhealthy ingredients like added sugar and refined grains.

Drinking enough water can have numerous benefits. One important factor, is that it can help boost the amount of calories you burn. According to 2 studies, it can boost metabolism by 24-30% over a period of 1-1.5 hours. This can amount to 96 additional calories burned if you drink 2 liters (67 oz) of water per day.
The best time to drink water is half an hour before meals. One study showed that half a liter of water, 30 minutes before each meal, increased weight loss by 44%.

9. Don't Overcook or Burn Your Meat

Meat can be a nutritious and healthy part of the diet. It is very high in protein, and contains various important nutrients.The problems occur when meat is overcooked and burnt. This can lead to the formation of harmful compounds that raise the risk of cancer.
So, eat your meat, just don't overcook or burn it.

10. Avoid Bright Lights Before Sleep

When we're exposed to bright lights in the evening, this disrupts production of the sleep hormone melatonin .An interesting "hack" is to use a pair of amber-tinted glasses that block blue light from entering your eyes in the evening.
This allows melatonin to be produced as if it were completely dark, helping you sleep better .

About 70 percent of Pakistan’s population is living in rural areas and is directly involved in agricultural activities. The major crops of Pakistan are wheat, rice, maize, cotton and sugar cane. These major crops contributed 7.7 percent last year against the set target of 4.5 percent. Though the agricultural sector is facing problems in Pakistan yet the major chunk of money comes from this sector.

No mechanism has been adopted to eradicate the issue of soil erosion and even after harvesting, nothing is done to improve or restore the soil energy. Therefore, the fertility of soil is decreasing day by day. Water wastage is also very high in our country. The archaic method of flood irrigation is still in practice, which wastes almost 50 to 60 percent of water. A new irrigation system called drip irrigation system has been introduced in many parts of the world. This not only saves water but also gives proper quantity of water according to the needs of plants. Thirdly, owing to old methods of cultivation and harvesting, Pakistan has low per acre yield, whereas Nepal, India and Bangladesh are using modern scientific methods to increase their yield. Fourthly, the small farmers are increasing in our country as the lands are dividing generation by generation. So, there are large number of farmers who own only 4 acres of land. These small farmers do not get credit facilities to purchase seeds, pesticides, fertilisers etc. Additionally, a large area of land is owned by feudal and the farmers who work on their lands, are just tenants. Fifthly, water logging and salinity is increasing day by day. No effective measures have been taken to curb it. As the storage capacity of the dams is decreasing so the water availability per acre is also decreasing.

More dams should be constructed on Indus, Jehlum and Chenab rivers. This will enhance the storage capacity of water and reduce the per acre cost of all the crops. This step will also reduce the salinity chances of the lands as less tube well water will be flooded to the lands which cause salinity.
