deserve a good life with loved ones around them. I have decided to spend my life speaking out for all of those wonderful creatures, as well as children and adults who do not have a voice. I am the Arlie Rufus -- the dog with a voice!

<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="self" type="application/rss+xml" href="http://feeds.feedburner.com/TheArlieRufusReport" />
<atom10:link xmlns:atom10="http://www.w3.org/2005/Atom" rel="hub" href="http://pubsubhubbub.appspot.com/" />

An Open Letter of Invitation to Nathan and Sandra Deal, and Karen and Steve Handel to Dinner in the Home of a Gay Georgia Couple

So I'm turning over this post to Volunteer dad. He has an invitation for two politicians in our state, and he wants to share with my readers and fans his letter that he'll submit to the Atlanta Journal Constitution this evening. Take it away dad!!

As I began to craft this letter, my rationale was anger. I wanted to take fierce opposition to Nathan Deal’s campaign attacks on gay Georgians, and most notably gay teenagers.

Instead, I decided the anger tactic has been done with little or no success. So, I erased countless paragraphs that told of gay and lesbian suicide rates 2.5 times higher than straight teenagers. I erased comments on the wonderful services Youth Pride provides to teenagers in need of support as they struggle to understand their sexuality. I erased the multiple paragraphs that told of the sad fact that many gay and lesbian teenagers have been abandoned by their families. And I erased the countless proof points of why gay and lesbian Americans should be celebrated for their contributions to business and community. I could debate Mr. Deal and Mrs. Handel for hours on the need for gay youth support programs, the important role gay and lesbian taxpayers play in our society and why our family deserves the same rights and protections as their families.

I decided I would make a public invitation to the Deal and Handel families to spend an evening at my home in Atlanta – with my partner Steve and our two wonderful rescue pups Arlie Rufus and Foster (a family similar to Mrs. Handel’s). My family welcomes the Deal and Handel families to meet us; talk to us as constituents; learn how we contribute to society as successful businessmen and community activists; hear our concerns for the many challenges facing our city, state and country; get to know us personally and learn of our Christian upbringings. You get it; normal, regular conversations – one more thing straights and gays have in common.

I have written this letter before the results of the run-off have been finalized. Why? Because it really does not matter who wins this run-off. Instead, what is most important to my family is the position that has been at the forefront of this run-off –the denial of equal rights to gay and lesbian taxpaying Georgians.

So I ask the Deal and the Handel families to contact me either at the email or phone number listed below (if this is allowed) or through the AJC and let my family know possible dates over the next month when they would be free to visit our home. I will make formal invitations to your respective campaign offices and will allow both of your families to determine the best evening for our dinner and even the desired menu. It is my hope that by breaking bread with my family, the Deal and Handel families will open their eyes to how critical it is for our leaders to build up ALL of our youth; work for equality for ALL taxpaying Georgians; and most importantly see that my family is just as strong, vibrant and quite honestly – important as theirs. We look forward to welcoming you to our home.

Best Regards,

Ed Patterson

edvol@bellsouth.net

404-213-3106

Boycott Hawaii!

Just today, equality took a step backward. Republican Governor of Hawaii Linda Lingle vetoed a civil unions bill passed by both houses of the Hawaii State Legislature to grant civil union rights to gay and lesbian taxpaying Hawaii citizens. These same citizens who pay the salary of Linda (she doesn't deserve to be called governor) are still second class citizens according to her actions.

No other statement conveys what Linda did more than this one from a leader of PFLAG in Hawaii:

"Today, on July 6, 2010, Gov. Linda Lingle denied social justice when she vetoed HB444 for Civil Unions,” said Rev. Carolyn M. Golojuch, President of PFLAG-Oahu. “Her denial is a violation of the integrity of her office and a violation of her oath of office. Governor Lingle’s denial of equal rights, benefits and protections for one segment of our citizens is a denial for all of our citizens of Hawaii.”

Integrity. A word that Linda never seemed to learn before taking office. Like many other hate-filled individuals who see equal rights for LGBT as a "threat" to marriage and traditional families (and I welcome any debate on how "straights" are holding up marriage and traditional family values...bring it on!), Linda forgets that if not for trailblazing women in the early part of the 20th Century, her bigoted ass would be doing nothing more than picking pineapples and being thankful if she got only one smack from her husband. You see, Linda, it's not been that long ago that you were denied equal rights. So what does this mean today? It means Linda will have to answer for why I and others will demand a boycott of her state and hit her where it counts most...her hate-filled pocket book.

I ask my fans to please write Linda's office, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the Hawaii Convention and Visitors Bureau via the hyperlinks and tell them "no equal rights, no money from me!" Ironic as it is, Linda can talk "values" but she is beholden to the all mighty dollar like so many others in office. Individual rights and freedoms do not matter. Money does. So, I thank you for your support and speaking loudly with your voice and your wallet. Good night all.

Arlie Rufus

Shame on Conklin Farms and Gary Conklin

I'll keep this one short and sweet and let my new friend Jamie Lee Curtis do the talking. Until we learn, speak and act these sad excuses for human beings will keep on abusing animals -- and in many cases other humans (yes my friend, look at the research -- if you abuse an animal you are more likely to abuse a child or another human!).

So I have four assignments for you:
1. watch the video...and troubling as it it
2. sign the petition
3. pass it on
4. do anything else in your powers to stop this madness!!

You are my friends and fans -- and as my profile says -- speak for those with no voices!

Bless you!

Arlie Rufus

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jamie-lee-curtis/an-open-letter-to-gary-co_b_591730.html

Animal Cruelty is NOT a first amendment right!

I listened in amazement last week as the Supreme Court of these United States upheld the ruling of a lower court that found the 1999 Depiction of Animal Cruelty Act "overboard" and might capture depictions protected by the first amendment. The case in question overturned a convinction in 2005 over dogfighting videos (remember, he's playing football, but I'll bite anyone who ever forgets this tragedy). Are you out of your ape crap mind! I have had it up to here (I'm pointing at Foster's nose) with all this "throw the constitution" to support "free speech". If videos of nasty skank women high heeling a defenseless animal is free speech, then America -- re-write the damn constitution. That's right, the visuals this ruling protects are these kinds of visuals -- a slut high heels crushing animals. We love to scream "freedom of speech" when we say and do things stupid and harmful to human beings all the time. And quite frankly, I've been sick and damn tired of it for years! Our constitution was not written to give hate-filled people the right to spew their hate. And up til now, I've let you humans just look like fools for using it to speak hate. But this has crossed the line -- it's crossed the line to impact me, my brothers and sisters. The U.S. Humane Society has posted a recent statement with the names of members of congress who have introduced and sponsored HR 5092 to crack down on these so-called crush videos. Look at this link and if your member of congress is not on the list, call and write them -- and be damn mad at them for not! Tell them if they do not support this legislation you WILL take action at the polls in November. If they have sponsored, call and write them to say thanks -- and demand they strong arm their fellow members to sponsor and pass this NOW!

You know, there was a sign in my last post dads saw at last year's March for Equality that read "I cannot believe we still have to protest this crap" and this is exactly how I feel. We have to introduce legislation to stop videos -- for profit mind you -- that help stop animal cruelty? What are you humans thinking? Stop spending time on bills that let you carry a gun in a restaurant, church or bar -- hell a school campus for that matter -- and spend your time, and dads' tax payer dollars on laws that protect animals. What a crock!

Sometimes Pictures Say It Best

I just want to say I'm proud of dads, their close friends and the hundreds of thousands who simply said in a peaceful way "equality for all Americans...period!" But suffice to say, the all mighty dollar can change these murders. I want to encourage my fans to send emails, make calls and demand the government and tourism industry of Namibia stop these seal pup clubbings.

As Gandhi said: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated". So let's just say the morality of this nation who wants tourists to visit its beaches and see these seal pups does not exist. There are ways each of you can help take our message of horror to the leadership of Namibia and its tourism officials. I'm attaching this information below and I want to implore you to join me in sending your objections. And even more important, share this blog post with others so they can voice their opinions as well.

I blog on many important issues, but remember I want my posts and information to help those who do not have a voice -- and these pup seals do not. So you can help me help them. Thanks fans. I love and appreciate you!

Namibia Parliament Contact:

http://www.parliament.gov.na/

parliament@parliament.gov.na

Namibia Tourism Board

http://www.namibiatourism.com.na/about.php

info@namibiatourism.com.na

So the Conservative Assemblyman Likes to Spank the Young Ladies?

My friends, this one will not be long, but a few fans have been aching for a post...so I will indulge. It appears another member of the family values flock has been a very bad boy. Not on the Appalachian Trail, or with a New Orleans hooker or even bedding down the wife of a campaign aide. Nope, this one has taken to spanking a lobbyist. Yes, it was like Christmas morning when Buddy and Sam's dad sent the news flash today. Another piece of ammo to once again point out the hypocrisy that is "family values" in the name of a vote (and in this case a piece of ass - oops, probably get scolded for that one). And for the life of me, how come "conservative family values elected officials" equates to "idiots". I mean Assemblyman Duvall - MAKE SURE THE MIC IS TURNED OFF!! A lot of good this advice does you now!

I encourage you to read the above link, then read this response from the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center - a punching bag for many of Assemblyman Duvall's rants about "conservative family values." You'll forgive them if it seems they are enjoying his fall from grace just a bit. But what I thought was very telling and important was the critique of how the "family values" movement never seems to bash and thrash these hypocrites after they are exposed. "Disappointed" seems to be the word. Please! Be disappointed if he misses a Wednesday night service. This man was having an affair with two women -- one half his age and the other an energy company lobbyist who apparently enjoys a fat old white man spanking her! I hope she got a good bonus for that one!

I know you'll enjoy the links, and like me have some fun with them. But remember how sad it is that people like this are spending our money, making decisions that effect us and our families and writing laws that give equality only to those who prescribe to their version of "conservative family values." Keep the peace my friends.

Arlie Rufus

The Perfect Time to Remember those in Need

As our nation and the world marks the fourth anniversary of a time that was far from our finest hour, we also have witnessed the end of an era of a senator from Massachusetts who -- for his many faults -- put the poor and needy ahead of all others. It seems fitting these two historic events are happening and remembered at a time when the debate regarding how or if we provide health care to all Americans is the headline of every newspaper and the lead story of most news programming.

As we continue to debate the issue, I would like to ask all of you to not just remember how Sen. Kennedy asked us to remember those most in need, but also to remember the pictures that should remain engraved in our minds of people losing their lives in a major US city because they lacked water, food and medical care. Just a few hours ago, I was welcoming volunteer dad back from a quick overnight trip to our nation's capital where he learned more about the importance of equality for all Americans when I saw him weeping. I was preparing to curl up beside him on the couch and I saw tears rolling down his face. "What the hell is up?" I thought. I turned to the TV and saw dad watching a special on New Orleans moderated by Brian Williams. It was powerful and sad. I saw people dead in the streets of this wonderful city. There were images of mothers with babies crying and thirsty. The elderly having their hands held in the heat of late August in Louisiana by loved ones in need. And Brian Williams said something that I’ll never forget: "I'm a husband and father of two children. And these children in New Orleans have the same worth as mine. But at this time, they did not." And my fans, that's what we should keep in mind as we determine our nation's future. I had a disagreement with Uncle Mike this week and he made a statement regarding compassion over the health care debate and government. He talked about not looking to government for compassion. I think I was wrong, Uncle Mike. After watching the New Orleans program tonight I saw that at that point in time, our government did not have compassion. You were right. And as long as we don't show compassion for our brothers and sisters, neighbors and countrymen, we're doomed to more Katrina’s.

Although I'm not one to push religion on any of my fans, I think this post deserves a bible verse to perhaps put things in perspective:

Proverbs 31:8-9
"Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy."

Remember those victimized by lack of compassion in New Orleans just four years ago, and I hope and pray as a nation we never ever look the other way to those in need again.

Would God Back Universal Healthcare: A Story Worth Reading

As most of you know, I don't normally go down the religious path when it comes to politics. I believe there should be CLEAR separation between our government and our churches. Yes, yes I know that our founding fathers had strong religious convictions and I'm thankful for this -- after all as Dads have told me their religious upbringings taught them to respect all people, treat them as equals and have a good heart for everyone. So for those convictions, I thank our founding fathers.

Now let me preface about my thinking on this health care crisis -- I'm not looking for the president or a democrat to get credit for fixing this insurance pocket greasing industry. I don't care who gets credit for fixing it. Hell, Sarah Palin has time on her hands, maybe she can take a crack. But fix it.

And as the health care debate heats up and some believe quality, affordable health care is not actually a god given right I ask you to read this telling article published today in the USA Today from a member of the clergy. It's an interesting take on what a few of our good books say about caring for the health and well being of others. So when some use the bible to prove a "point" that prohibits all Americans equality because of a verse or two they have taken into their own context, remember the passages that talk about loving and caring for your neighbor. It's a novel idea that our founding fathers knew hundreds of years ago. Something to think about. Good night all

Sarah Palin, Magic Johnson Was a Point Guard and You Are No Magic Johnson

My fans have spoken and they are demanding a post to the sudden and yes "tragic" press conference by my dear ole friend Sarah Palin (I'll not call her governor any longer as she doesn't seem to think it means much to run a state.). Just when I think she's hit the height of being a "big ole mess" there goes again. While watching this train wreck, was anyone else thinking "this is like the student body president who got caught cheating on a test telling an assembly she had to quit?"

So listening to her resignation speech in a location that resembled Buddy and Sam's lake cabin in rural Alabama, I turned my lovable face to Volunteer Dad and said "did you just turn the TV to Comedy Central? Is this chick for real?" His response "shhhh!" this is going to be classic! And classic it was -- and still is, I must say. Another Serena/Venus final, a classic Andy/Roger final and a wonderful celebration of our nation later, I find it my duty to put some context into Sarah's Friday waterfront celebration. As I do prior to each post, I do a little looking around for news reports, comments, etc. to see what the feel of an issue is before I give it my all for my fans. I found a rundown of Conservative analysts (OK...so calling Dana Perino an analyst is a stretch) commenting on Sarah's Friday neighborhood block party and they seem to have hit the nail on the head. The words they used include: bizarre, senseless, incoherent, rambling, disastrous, erratic and baffling.

That's right folks; the members of the Republican Party who always come to Sarah's defense are just as confused, albeit likely not as amused, as I am about this announcement. So I'd like to thank those "insightful" Conservatives for shedding light on this waterfront barbecue at Sarah and Todd's house. But I have to ask...why no comments on her point guard analogy? That was the highlight for me. Perhaps if she had consulted Magic Johnson (hell, consult anyone if that's what you do when Todd and the kids are giving you advice) she would have learned that point guards do dish off to teammates to help their team -- but they don't keep running straight off the gym floor and out the door to look for another game. They stay on the court and lead. Something Sarah has never understood. Good night all!

What a Week! Farrah, Michael, Governor Sanford -- and then today Billy "yell at me until I clean my house" Mays. This followed the beloved Ed McMahon, the continued protest in Iran and suffice to say, we've had a hell of a news week.

So, as I'm sitting back on this comfortable couch, avoiding the 95 degree Atlanta heat and humidity, I tried to make sense of the week-that-was and wondering what is the real takeaway.

First Farrah. Yes, her limelight was overshadowed in the news by Gov. Sanford's "Don't Cry for me Argentina" affair and then the death of the King of Pop. But for the all of her oddities later in life, Farrah gave us all a glimpse into her pains and struggles at the end. We can call her dizzy, dumb blond, "angel" or anything else -- but how many of us would let the world see us dying and hope that something good came from it? I doubt many.

Then there's the Governor -- the "moral", anti anything that isn’t his family values Governor Mark Sanford of South Carolina. As he turned his nose at stimulus money in a state whose unemployment and poor education system is alarming, he was bedding down an Argentinean divorcee with two children. All the while, his wife and four kids were hanging out in Columbia or their beach front home. Now, for those of you long time fans of mine, you know I could go on for days about the hypocrisy of yet another "conservative family values" blowhard caught with his pants down. I mean let's only allow marriage for those "men and women" who live by God's law -- and certainly only let those like Gov. Sanford raise children. Because as we know, a home with a mother and a father getting it on with Evita down in Buenos Aires is the best kind of home to raise children. Rather, I simply ask you to think long and hard before you let another one of these self proclaimed“Christian” men or women tell you how to raise a child or build a home and family. Remember, many of them are looking for simple minded votes or another listener to their hate-filled radio or TV shows.

And then there's Michael. Oh my Michael. The father of three (although one almost bit it over a Berlin hotel balcony a few years back), King of Pop, bleacher of skin, taker of many meds, suspect of inappropriate actions with children and a refuser to grow up. Yes, I think that wraps it up. Now I've heard from Dads that this guy was quite the entertainer back in the day. I've heard some of the tunes, seen some of that dancing that appears to just now becoming popular in England (yes...MJ dancing from the 80s did defeat Susan Boyle in Britain's Got Talent and I'm still bitter over it) and have to admit, the dude had skills. I suppose I can see why so many are saddened by his death. But it sounds to me like many of these fans should have been saddened by his unbalanced life.

And finally we have the continued traumatic events in Iran. I've been in a cage waiting for someone to let me free, so I can relate to what millions of Iranians must be feeling: that their votes and voices have no meaning. And most alarming, they now have to feel they do not have the freedom to voice their disapproval. I support these people and ask all of my readers to support their right to protest and demand their voices are heard. But can I implore all of my fans to remember those in Darfur, Chad, and Somalia who have for years been begging for our support and aid. Why are we not hearing about them anymore? Why are "bags of wind" in Washington not taking the same passion toward their causes as Iran? These questions demand answers so join my dads in writing your elected officials for answers.

So as I leave you there is a constant in all of this week's news that is the real takeaway and that is the children. There's Michael's three who will be the topic of many media reports, and Gov. Sanford's four who have heard an abundance of "morality” from their father for years and now see actions that don't come close to mirroring his words; words that he has used to hurt many. The Argentinean mistress' two who will also have to hear an explanation as to why Mom did what she did with a married man. And lastly, there are children in Iran, Sudan, Chad and Somalia who are the real innocent victims of dictators and inaction by others. So for these young people, who cannot speak for themselves, let me ask you again "remember the children." Good night my friends. Let's hope next week gives us a chance to catch our breath.

Children...these are OUR Children

Relaxing in my comfortable bed after a weekend at the lake, I just ran across an interesting, yet disturbing article written recently in the USA Today. Now, before I share you the link, let me ask you a question. Did you know there are schools set up specifically for homeless children? Yes...there are. In a nation that is filled with so much, there are children living homeless who depend on the goodness of others to educate our future leaders. The article I'm talking about was written by Maggie Rodriquez of CBS Morning show fame (and interviewer of my Aunt Elaine a couple of weeks ago!) and features Justin, a young man who moves from church to church every Sunday -- because he is homeless.

So without going into too much song and dance as I'm exhausted from 48 hours of running around a lake and barking at dad as he floated off in a canoe, I will just ask all of my fans to put some thought into how we can help our homeless children. What should we ask of our communities, business leaders, elected officials and government to ensure in a nation of plenty, children are not faced with such a life? Children deserve more and we, as a nation, deserve more as well. And while you’re at it, don't let it slip your mind that a pet is playing a larger role than many of those I just mentioned in helping this young man with a life of being homeless. I pray none of you, your family, friends or children ever experience what Justin is experiencing. It’s terrible. And how do I know? Remember, I was homeless too.

Run You Alaskan Moose...Run!

OK fans, this one you have to see and read to truly appreciate. It appears that Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is such a bad shot from the comfortable seat of her helicopter that an NRA member has decided she needs a customized military-style assault weapon to take down her next Alaskan moose. And if the moose isn’t enough “sport” to gun down with an assault weapon, it appears these will also disable military vehicles and body armor. Wow! Who knew Sarah was such a bad shot that she needed a customized white assault weapon to enjoy her favorite sport.
Now I have to admit, I support the rights of law abiding Americans to own a gun to protect their homes and to hunt. Yes, left wing Arlie does believe this. But before you remove milk bones from your Arlie Christmas list, let me tell you I do NOT believe in the legality of any assault weapons being owned by persons not in the military or law enforcement. I support the Brady Bill and strict background checks on gun and ammunition purchases. Strong safeguards such as these in place will help keep firearms out of the hands of those who need not own them. And it is not necessary for any of us to own an automatic weapon…or a tank…or a bazooka...or a nuclear bomb.
But apparently Sarah needs them for her hunting expeditions. And that lovely white color; well I’m sure it will blend in well with the Alaskan snow.

How Far We Have to Go

Yes yes, I know many of you have been anxiously awaiting my next blog entry. I have slipped a bit since Barack and Michelle gave me reason for hope -- and I've not been disappointed. But as I settled in from an evening walk, loving the smell of Dad's famous grilled cheese sandwiches, I caught a disturbing news story on TV that demonstrates we have a long way to go. It appears the death of a Hispanic man in Pennsylvania will go unpunished. The victim of a beating from four football players in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania lost his life in a rage of fists, kicks and most disturbing ethnic slurs. Since I watched the story, I've been reading articles and reports about the incident and the community where this horrible crime took place. I encourage all of my readers to do the same and learn about the hate that exists in this town, like so many others, unfortunately. What is most disturbing is at a time when young Americans are exhibiting love, caring and compassion for others like no time we've seen in our history, there is still this much hate in a small American town. And we must all face the fact that this is a learned hate. Young people do not wake up and say "I hate Hispanics and if I get a chance, I'm going to beat one to death." No my fans, they are TAUGHT this hate.
I will not let this horrible act take away my hope that we are on the right path for the future of our country. But I will make sure all of my fans understand we have much work ahead of us before this "hope" can truly be felt. Speak up, speak out, stop hate and when hate does happen, scream and demand justice! Remember

This One Belongs to Dad!!

It gives me great pleasure to turn over this entry to Dad...who witnessed history and the dawning of a new day for our county...Dad, take it away.

Well, they don't get much wiser than our Arlie Rufus, so I thank him so for the chance to share a few thoughts about today and what I witnessed. Today, I'm more proud to be an American than ever. We are all proud and loyal Americans, but there are a few times in our lives when we say "Today, everyone in the world wants to be an American" and today was that day. I was fortunate to join 2 million Americans, as well as those from England, Trinidad and Tobago (friends from both with me today), as well as countless others who shared in this moment in Washington, DC. It was cold as we awoke at 530 a.m. and made the mad rush to the Mall. Cold, weary, but filled with the same hope that brought us to this day, we made friends, helped folks get the best camera angles; watch the jumbo tron from the mall with the capital ahead of us. I don't know if I can put into words watching OUR new president step down to the capitol steps. It made my knees weak knowing what was about to happen. As Justice Roberts completed giving the oath and our new President said "so help me God." I burst into tears. The African-American young man behind me tapped me on my shoulder, reached out his hand, gave me a fist bump, then shook it and we embraced. Then, the older African American man next to me grabbed my arm and shook my hand and then gave me a hug. That's what today all was about. People of all colors, races, religions, ages, sexual orientations were dancing, hugging, crying together. It was the most moving, important event I have ever witnessed.

As I have returned to my hotel room and send this to all of you, my eyes are still filled with tears. Our feet are tired for sure, but our hearts are filled with pride...pride in not only our nation for giving us this historical moment, but pride in our citizens as well all take President Obama's dream of serving our communities, schools, churches, neighbors and nation in a way we have never seen in our history. I'm so glad President Obama asked us to give of ourselves -- that's been a long time coming and what makes this man and his mission so very special.

Arlie, thank you for giving me this time. I miss you so very much and cannot wait to come home, and share a tear with you, Foster and Dad. Because today WE ARE ONE!!

Sure I Miss Dad, But He's Witnessing History

Has anyone been as cold as I have over the past few weeks? Dang! It's Atlanta -- Hotlanta, but the cold remains. Mind you, I am terribly skilled at dashing down the steps of the deck, relieving myself and returning back to the house for some warmth and a well deserved chewie treat. As the days and nights remain cool, I'm a bit sad that Dad Ed isn't home. No. No. No. He's not doing that crazy ass cross country travel again. Nope. Dad's in Washington, DC witnessing history. When our man Barack won the election last November, Dad decided he needed to be there. I've never seen Dad so emotional as that evening. The election had so much meaning for him, and as I've found out, for all of us. Today, Dad called and told us that he was part of the 300, 000 or so that joined together to celebrate this special time in American history with the entertainment and a short address by President Obama. He's joining a few friends -- one from England -- and all appear to be overtaken with emotion. Dad told us Simon (his pale little buddy from London) had tears when the Star Spangled Banner played and then when Barack spoke. He apparently choked Dad up to, as it proved the importance of President Obama taking over as our president...not just for Americans, but for the world. Wow...pretty powerful stuff I'm thinking! Well since we don't have HBO at the house (what's up with that...they'd never skip a sports network, but no HBO??), I couldn't share in the fun of today's events. But as Dad has said "On Tuesday, January 20, 2009, we are a new nation, one filled with hope and possibility" and that's one event I'll make certain to take in from the comfort of our big couch. I'd love to be with Dad, but if I don't want to hang out in the backyard on an Atlanta winter day, you know that DC winter weather will be ruff! Have fun Dad. We love and miss you and sure our happy WE ARE ONE!!

Home Alone for the Holidays, But It's OK

In just 48 short hours, Foster and I will get to get take down those stockings that should be filled with dingos, rawhides, snausages and the like! A poor economy, job losses mounting, an unsafe world and still having to wait for Michelle's husband to start righting the ship have left many not feeling too good about this holiday. So I will leave you with the words of one of my favorite artists, Jewel, and her song "Hands" -- because we can all make a difference and as she states so simply "in the end, only kindness matters."

Happy Holidays my friends. Arlie, Foster, Ed and Steve wish you the best for 2009!

"Hands"

If I could tell the world just one thingIt would be that we're all OK

And not to worry 'cause worry is wastefulAnd useless in times like theseI won't be made useless

I won't be idle with despairI will gather myself around my faith

For light does the darkness most fearMy hands are small, I know

But they're not yours, they are my ownBut they're not yours, they are my own

And I am never broken

Poverty stole your golden shoesIt didn't steal your laughter

And heartache came to visit meBut I knew it wasn't ever afterWe'll fight, not out of spite

For someone must stand up for what's right'Cause where there's a man who has no voice

There ours shall go singingMy hands are small I knowBut they're not yours, they are my own

But they're not yours, they are my ownI am never broken

In the end only kindness matters In the end only kindness matters

I will get down on my knees, and I will prayI will get down on my knees, and I will pray

I will get down on my knees, and I will prayMy hands are small I know

But they're not yours, they are my ownBut they're not yours, they are my own

And I am never brokenMy hands are small I knowBut they're not yours, they are my own

But they're not yours, they are my ownAnd I am never brokenWe are never broken
We are God's eyes God's hands God's mindWe are God's eyesGod's hands God's heart

We are God's eyesGod's handsGod's eyesWe are God's handsWe are God's hands

YES WE DID!! No, the Lady Vols were not taking Dad Ed out of his fall Volunteer coma. And no, Dad Steve was not watching a replay of the 1994 Razorback NCAA basketball championship. We were watching Barack become our president. It was awesome! A few friends came over to watch the results, Dad Ed was watching while tracking results on his laptop and the chew treats and goodies were flying all over the place for me and the Foster Goofus! I knew it must be a good night.

So just after 10 or so, it was over! Obamamania was going strong and finally it seemed every American would have voice (unlike the past eight years -- four of which I can testify to!). It was a good night. I saw some tears of joy from Dad Ed all night. He has been a bit of a basket case for the past few months over the election. So this was a special night for him. When Aunt Elaine (his sister) called, Dad went outside and was tore up something big! I've never seen him so emotional. It was actually nice to see all the months of his worrying, donating and passionately supporting Obama pay off. So I suppose "YES WE CAN" became "YES WE DID." Or did we?

It seems something just as important as the election of our new leader was happening on the west coast. A group of Americans were being denied their god given right to be equal in the eyes of the law. Proposition 8 in California narrowly passed that denies gay Americans the right to marry that is afforded to all other Americans. I listened closely to the discussion and wondered "how could people who saw the light in electing a man of inclusion, diversity, love and peace reject the rights of so many? Well, rather than me ramble for a while, I'll leave you with a blog entry Dad and I found from Melissa Etheridge, a wonderful artist and singer who is also denied the same rights as my Dads. It speaks volumes and makes you ask yourself a few questions. And most importantly it makes it clear to those who oppose my Dads equal rights that gay Americans are not going away – they will fight like hell for our rights. No stopping them! They are Americans! YES WE CAN!! YES WE DID!! And YES WE WILL!!

Melissa’s Speaks

One More Day

Well, as the last weekend before the 2008 election comes to an end, I felt it important to reflect a bit on what my takeaways were of this historical presidential election.

First, let me get this out of the way. Neither campaign -- and I mean neither has talked about what they will do for those poor little homeless pups walking the streets of this fine nation. Nope -- nothing. Instead, we continue to rely on the wonderful people at the ASPCA and those struggling and underfunded shelters that help pups find homes. This said, I'll simply ask that our next president do the right thing and make a statement in support of these organizations AND most importantly demand harsher federal punishment for individuals involved in animal cruelty.

Now, onto the choice that is front of the American voter. It's no mystery as to my political leanings and preference. If the past eight years taught Americans one thing it is "ruling" a free nation with lies and deceit while putting greed in front of the needs of hard working citizens should never be allowed again. This dark period in our history is thankfully coming to an end. I'll refrain from asking those who helped elect and re-elect this embarrassment of an administration how they feel now. Rather, I'll ask them to "think" -- and "think" very hard about the direction this country is headed, and how we right the ship. Forget the ridiculous need for a $600 check that will do nothing but maybe help Wal-Mart sell more cheap overseas-made goods. Forget the thought that "when republicans are in power the stock market is better." HA! And forget the idea that keeping gays from marrying, making stem cell research illegal and eliminating the rights of women somehow trumps the needs of keeping and creating jobs, educating our children, keeping our nation secure and fixing our reputation around the world -- they do not!

America, this election is about our livelihoods -- here at home and abroad. It is about restoring the world's faith in our nation and about each and every person no matter their race, sex, religion, national origin, sexual preference or number of rescue dogs owned having the opportunity to live happy and successful lives.

Maybe it would help if you looked at things from my perspective. You see, I've actually be shielded from the horror that many now feel as a result of eight years of terrible government that forced their lives to change, and not for the better. I live in a home that is on a fixed mortgage. I do not have to wonder if Dads have to choose between feeding me and getting me my monthly heart worm pill. When I was stung by a bee, my Dads took me to the doctor because we could afford it (that's insurance for me!). And get this, my two parents -- are both Dads. We are a family. We do not hurt any "traditional" families. In fact some pups with one Mom and one Dad actually let us play with them -- novel idea, isn't it? All this is to say, I'm fortunate to live the life that all Americans should have the opportunity to live. And to do this my friends, I simply ask you to look at the two tickets running and imagine this nation four years from now. Which one gives us hope and opportunity, and which one continues to play on false fears that do nothing but drive a wedge between two Americas. Do not get it wrong this time. Do not return to the days of promoting the haves at the expense of the have nots. When you walk into the voting both ask yourself "what moves my family closer to the life of Arlie Rufus; that sounds pretty damn good to me!"

YES WE CAN!!

Arlie Rufus

Christians? Simply said, individuals calling themselves Christians are spreading hate filled rhetoric as we near election day. I do not get the chance to go to church, but I've learned from Dads that Christians love, respect and treat all of God's children as equals and prescious gifts. Well, I do not think this story displays such Christian values.

I only ask that you share this story with everyone you know and let them know that Christians really do not act or think this way. True Christians are ones who love, care and know, in the words of my favorite artist Jewell, "in the end, only kindness matters."

I'm not a real American?

OK all my fans, this one you have got to hear! As this important election draws to an end, even the coolest of pups gets a bit ruffled under the ears with all the false, negative and down right ugly campaigning. I mean for the love of Rin Tin Tin -- people are losing jobs, houses, their retirement -- and might I add their pups!

So when this odd, odd, odd woman named Michelle Bachmann recently went on TV to say she believes Barack Obama is anti-American, as well as possibly other Members of Congress, I had to leave that comfortable Disney blanket that has become my resting place late in the evening. For the sixth district voters of Minnesota, please write and call this woman and ask her when she'll spend her time tackling the issues of the economy, health care and jobs and stop being a very poor mouthpiece for far right conservative clucks!

Now, for those of you who do not know about this terribly disturbed woman, let me share a brief exert from comments she gave regarding gay and lesbian Americans:

"And again, don’t misunderstand. I am not here bashing people who are homosexuals, who are lesbians, who are bisexual, who are transgendered. We need to have profound compassion for the people who are dealing with the very real issue of sexual dysfunction in their life, and sexual identity disorders. This is a very real issue. It’s not funny, it’s sad. Any of you who have members of your family that are in the lifestyle - we have a member of our family that is. This is not funny. It’s a very sad life. It’s part of Satan, I think, to say this is gay. It’s anything but gay."

So let me see if I have this straight (no pun intended). Dad and Dad have a sad life. Their life is part of "Satan". They have a "disorder" and "dysfunction". Well, "Representative" Bachmann let me tell you something from a pup who has two wonderful Dad's. On their worst day they are not as hate-filled and close to Satan as you, "Representative" Bachmann. And on their worst day, they are not as "sad" as you, "Representative Bachmann."

I might remind my fans, I'm quite the calm and lovable pup. Ask anyone. My tail wags all day long. But this woman who somehow has a role in shaping our nations laws made me wonder if "that woman from Wasilla" really is the most unqualified person to run for office. I'm guessing the two of them probably bowl, roller derby or shoot helpless animals from airplanes together.

Many times I laugh after I post a blog. This one makes me mad -- damn mad. There is something we can do about this, however. Vote her and the hatemongers out! Unfortunately, I cannot go and vote (although I'm a hell of a lot smarter than some who can) but many of you can and will!! And if you all go and vote against hate and division, Michelle, Sarah and the hatemongers can return to running gun stores in "small town Pro-America" where "real Americans" can be found.

Please help Congressman Westmoreland of Georgia

Now those of you who know me are probably shocked I am asking for your support and help for a staunch conservative member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Lynn Westmoreland is a republican congressman from the Third District of Georgia. And where is this district? Well, if you are driving from Atlanta to Florida for vacation after you have left your four-legged family member in some cold, dark hole you call a kennel, head south on I-85 and you will have the honor of driving through the lovely countryside Lynn represents.
So why do I ask for your help? Well, Lynn seems to have a few issues with the Holy Bible he most certainly uses as a weapon against those of us who do not follow his staunch conservative ideals (these include voting against a bill that would have provided funding to the FBI to investigate Civil Rights cases – named after a slain 14 year-old African American; as well as referring to Barack and Michelle Obama as “uppity”). Recently, Lynn was interviewed on what I suppose he thought would be a fun segment on Comedy Central. In this interview, Lynn was defending his support for posting the 10 Commandments in the U.S. Senate and House chambers. The problem is Lynn did not know the 10 Commandments. Can you believe it? I mean Dad Ed is a PR guy and I heard him say “for the love of the 10 Commandments, don’t do an interview on the 10 Commandments if you don’t know them!” Makes sense to me. In fact, as my beagle brain recalls, Lynn only got three correct.
So I implore all of you to help Lynn. He so wants to use our bible and the 10 Commandments to keep his seat in Congress and if we all email him and his campaign the link to my blog, we’ll give him a quick Sunday School lesson that will help him in his re-election bid. After all, the good people of Georgia’s Third District deserve this wonderful representation that is certainly helping to employ, feed and clothe them.
ONE: 'You shall have no other gods before Me.' TWO: 'You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.' THREE: 'You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain.' FOUR: 'Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.' FIVE: 'Honor your father and your mother.' SIX: 'You shall not murder.' SEVEN: 'You shall not commit adultery.' EIGHT: 'You shall not steal.' NINE: 'You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.' TEN: 'You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, nor his male servant, nor his female servant, nor his ox, nor his donkey, nor anything that is your neighbor's.'

The Woman from Wasilla

Yes, my many friends and fans, it has been too long between posts. In this time, both dads have celebrated birthdays, hurricane season is in full force, football season underway, (do not ask about the Vols!) the conventions are over and the running mates have been selected. Although my Dads’ birthdays are the most important of this list, I’m sure they will grant me this post to concentrate on – “the woman from Wasilla.”
Sarah Palin is her name, and much like her new boss, I had no clue of her existence until a week ago. When the announcement was made she could be a heartbeat (an old heartbeat at that) away from the presidency of the United States, I sat up from the comforts of my snout resting on Dad Steve’s chest and asked myself “this could be the leader of the free world? I must learn more.” So I did.
Now let me remind all of my fans that my purpose here is to speak for those who do not have a voice – and that I will do. Let’s begin with Gov. Palin’s connection to Jesus Christ. Apparently, she has talked to Jesus and understands that, in reference to our soldiers in Iraq, "Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God," That’s an interesting revelation. It seems to me that we’ve had nearly 8 years of a leader that claims a special connection with God and things haven’t really gone so well. Our soldiers in Iraq have served honorably and well. But did they really go for honorable and honest reasons? Most of my pack thinks the answer is “no.” They are on a mission from George Bush for reasons of his choosing. So let me speak for those who do not have a forum: Do we really want to trust these folks that claim special connections to God and are willing to lie to get us to go along with them? Even dogs learn fairly quickly who to trust and who not to trust.
Next, she claims that in this discussion with God that it his will to get a natural gas pipeline built. She said that "God's will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that.” Could that be true? It would seem to be God’s will that the hungry be fed and the poor be helped and the sick be visited and people learn to love one another. But does he really get involved with gas pipelines? I’m just a dog, but when I want a biscuit I bark or sit or try to earn it. I don’t claim that the great Wolfhound in the sky wants me to have one. Let sister Sarah argue for the merits of the pipeline and take her chances rather than claiming that God wants the pipeline and that she is the messenger. Humans in positions of authority that claim special connections with the Almighty frighten me. Ask the moderate Muslims about the hijacking of their religion and political organizations by those who converse directly with Allah.
My research revealed so much more. She supported the “bridge to nowhere” before she didn’t. She really like congressional earmarks when they were good for Wasilla, but not so much when it scored her political points to disparage them. She supports “family values” and has five children. One is a special needs child and one is, well, let’s just say out of control. And she has time to be Governor of Alaska and maybe VP? How do her professional time commitments square with traditional right wing family values?
Next…oh wait a minute there is no next. I’ll simply leave you with a link to an AP story that shows a few little inconsistencies and maybe some little white lies being told by the GOP. I have found myself barking like the pit bull Palin claims to be for Dad Ed and Dad Steve to either give Obama and Biden another donation or just take me out for a walk to end the insanity that is Sarah Palin. As I approach my third year of the dog-turned-child of Dad Ed and Dad Steve, I have become more astute to the ways of the world. I hold my position as a dog with a voice with the highest regard and find speaking out for injustice as a powerful responsibility. So I’ll leave you with a comment on this last Palin “zinger” that only I can truly address and hope she reads this: Sarah ,, there is more than one difference between you and a pit bull. Pit bulls, when raised correctly, cared for, given discipline and guidance are lovable, caring and trusting creatures. I’m leaving my fans to make their determination if you actually encompass pit bull qualities.

Dad's Do Urinetown?

As I sat in front of the door with my typical “are you two leaving me again with this big damn mongrel” look, I caught my Dads talking about this musical they were about to witness. Now there are two things you need to know that make this conversation so confusing for even the smartest of rescue dogs. First, a musical and Dad Ed typically do not go together. He’s not exactly one who embraces the arts and culture in any sense of the word (remember, he thinks a women’s final four is embracing art). Now Dad Steve, he appreciates the arts, music and good entertainment and does his best to get Dad Ed to open himself up to more of this type of entertainment. But it’s not like season symphony and opera tickets are arriving at the house. Lastly, this musical sounded – well a bit more to my taste, as well as…nasty. It’s title: Urinetown. That’s right. And yes, my ears were checked out on my last high-priced vet visit. It was definitely Urinetown. It seemed one of Dad Ed’s friends who has a tremendous appreciation for the theater, Broadway, small community theaters and all that “stuff” as Dad says convinced them to attend. So off they went.
Now usually my time without Dads in the house is spent wondering if Foster my new big, dumb but hopelessly lovable brother will leave me be while I catch up on my sleep. But I stayed awake this time. I couldn’t stop thinking about Urinetown. So there I sat. Comfortable at the end of the king size bed with a perfect view of the front yard, the street below and anyone who dared to walk near. I was watching for Dads to return. I had to hear more about Urinetown. Well finally the two were zipping up the driveway and none too soon. Dad Ed thinks he’s doing me a favor by keeping CNN playing when he and Dad Steve are away and quite honestly I’m sick of the election cycle. I mean for the life of me this one is easy enough for even Foster to figure out. Stay with something that has crashed and burned over the past seven years or make a new start – but like Sadie’s Dad, I digress.
As Dads opened the front door and Foster knocked me down to jump to their shoulders, I listened carefully. I had to know about Urinetown. Well, much to my surprise they loved it. They said the musical was fun, entertaining, had many undertones of current events, some talented performers and left them thinking the 20 bucks they spent was not near enough. “That’s it?” I barked. “You mean there wasn’t one pup in the production scouting out spots to mark? “ I mean really. Doesn’t the title make you think at least one dog was in the production? Are we not famous for relieving ourselves in public? Do we not deserve a character in such a production? I suppose the important thing is that Dads stepped out of their comfort zone of margaritas, beer, chips/salsa, football and weekends at the pool. They enjoyed some “art” albeit about urine.

You Think I Need a Brother?

Well it’s official. I am no longer the sole king of my domain. Nope. No more. It seems that Dads have decided that a permanent home for our "foster" dog is what is best. Goodbye to the chewy treat section that was once all mine. Goodbye to jumping into that king size bed without being pummeled by 50 pounds of hound dog. Goodbye to hiding out under the backyard deck by myself. And, goodbye to the walks around the hood that were once very short on orders and corrections.

Our lovely home now welcomes Foster. That's right, Foster. Dad tells me he's named after his maternal grandfather. I like to think it's because he was a foster dog so long, it just took. I can certainly see him being shifted from home to home.

OK OK. So I was once that dog in front of the Petsmart, needing a home just like my new brother. Certainly I saw myself as cuter, more loveable, well behaved and memorable (yes, Dad left after our first meeting and then five miles down the road said "I want that pup!!" and raced back to adopt me). But I would be lying if I told you I didn't have a soft spot in my heart for this big lug. Sure, he plays rougher than most dogs(already kicked out of the dog park once) and has on more than one occasion brought blood to my pretty little face (I took out his ankle during the last bout and he didn’t walk right for a day!). And sure, when he jumps in excitement when Dads come home his head almost hits the ceiling. And yes, he tends to run my precious little self over when needing to get outside for a quick run to god knows where.

But he's now my brother and I love him. Come to think of it, he's not near as bad as some humans. Lord knows I've witnessed my Dads' phone conversations and the drama from some of their siblings and families make Foster look tame. But this new sibling has allowed me to reflect upon what is most important in my life. A good family, Dads that love and take care of me, places to run and play, food and water that ALL dogs deserve and most important -- having more intellect in the tiny spot on my ear than Foster has in his entire head.

So as I do each posting, I must speak for those four-legged friends who cannot speak. Give the Foster’s of the world a good home. Overlook their sloppy leg hiking, the water that drips from their mouths for what seems to be hours after quenching their thirst, the paw prints that will overtake every window in your house and the escapes from the yard that last hours. Overlook all of this and give them a home. And please please, support the ASPCA and their fight to keep the Arlie Rufus' and Foster’s free from abuse and cruelty.

Welcome Home Foster!!
